Week 9’s recap, awards, rants and updated playoff standings.

Week 10.

The last week of the regular season is upon us. For many of you, it’ll be your last game for a WHILE before Winter season rolls around. For some of you, it’ll be your last chance at practicing certain things before the real season comes around.

For certain of you, it’s your last do or die. Last week, I talked long and large about how it’s all about you and how you perform. I wasn’t wrong; guys stepped up and made plays for themselves while others walked away with their head low and ashamed of the outcome; that’s FPF for you.

Leave it all on the field. Don’t regret anything.

Important notes about the playoffs

  • Division C has no byes.
  • Division C is the usual 8 team format where 1st seed plays 8th seed, 2nd plays 7th, etc.
  • We reseed teams after every round so lowest seed always plays highest seed.
  • First round is Sunday July 24th. There’s literally two time slots (19:00 and 20:00). That is it. There will be NO exceptions. Some games can be played at Stade de Montréal or Lachine. Free your schedule.
  • Round 2 is the following Sunday (July 31st). ALL Lachine games. Round 3 is Tuesday (August 2nd) ALL Brossard games. Finals are all on Sunday August 7th at Brossard.
  • The time and dates for playoffs has been on the website for a while (Go to the schedule section and press the thumbnail Playoffs).

Let’s get started.

Week 9

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any crazier, THIS happened. The first two games ended in ties, upsets rained all over the schedule and we saw teams finally step up and make a name for themselves; better late than never.

I feel like we’re in for a world of surprises in the next couple of weeks’ gentlemen. I’m eager to see it all unfold.

Thoughts of the Week

  • I scorekept two division C games, both were ties. How?
  • Shoutout to Moe Khan who’s been stupidly fast at uploading stats this season. He deserves love for that.
  • Ryan Aridi is too humble for his own good.
  • Many underestimated the possible Game of the Week in Division C. Sadly, I couldn’t see it as I was playing at the same time, but I’ve heard it was a defensive battle that ended in an upset. I love me some Div C.
  • That being said, props to No Big Deal for pulling off what I wasn’t expected possible this season and beating No Fly Zone. Well done.
  • I tip my hat to Keyport Lock for, not only not finishing winless, but spoiling others’ dreams. Regardless of said dreams being my own, they still accomplished something remarkable this week.
  • Coyotes and La Sauce was a heck of a game. Basically what these two teams should’ve looked like from Week 1.
  • Quick shoutout to Varennes; they couldn’t fill their roster due to vacations and whatnot and, yet, found enough players to sub in, play, and give their opponents a run for their money.
  • Warhawks finally looked like the team I expected them to look like all season. Fred Mallette had a good night out there. I kinda feel bad for them not pulling through in the end though.
  • Week 10 is bound to be ridiculous from top to bottom. So many exciting games. It all starts Sunday 5:00 PM.
  • Pokemon GO seems to be the only subject of discussion this week. Don’t get me wrong, it’s actually pretty awesome and what it’s bringing is even better; people are actually socializing because of a game/app. Our society needs more games like that.

Players of the Week

  • Chris Milard (Top Sauce): 6 sacks and a touchdown. Milard was the only good thing about Top Sauce this week.
  • Sammy Feder (Coyotes): 285 combined yards, 7 combined TDs, a massive 145 QBR and a win. Well done, Sammy Feder.
  • Francois Raymond (La Sauce): You will not see my give awards to two opposing QBs, but this was a spectacular outing: Francois Raymond posted a ridiculous 151.7 QBR alongside his 7 TD and 236 combined yards game.
  • Joey Taylor (Stockton Slap): After one too many slump weeks, Joey Taylor was back and outperformed everyone this week. 7 TDs, 294 passing yards, perfect QBR and a pick on defense. DEAR LORD.
  • Laurent Ladouceur (Warhawks): No one could cover him this week as he soared for 136 yards and 3 TDs.

Recaps

Top Sauce looked nothing like the team I’ve grown to know them last week when they faced Eskimo Brothers. In fact, they were so off, I was wondering what division I was watching. Luckily for them, Eskimo Brothers were also miles off as Zach Stachowski struggled to move the chains and/or punch it in against a 6-man squad. Sure, Vince Nardone calls a good defense, but there were flaws he simply wasn’t exploiting. Nonetheless, certain guys came out to play and amiss all the drops and missed attempts, Corey Oliver and Chris Milard elevated their game atop the pack; good for them. Heck, even GM Kolethras had a good outing. With very little playoff impact on the line for Top Sauce, the game didn’t matter much, but now Eskimo Brothers are in a tough spot due to last week’s disastrous performance. I’m eager to see how they’ll bounce back when everything’s on the line.

Broccasion fielded a hungry looking roster on Sunday against Honey Badgers, but their offense simply couldn’t seem to find groove as it struggled most of the night. Luckily, the Bros defense continues to be as fearful as we’ve grown accustomed to it and got the job done. Doug McKernan struggled for yet another week as he took 5 sacks from Alec Cerantola and threw 3 head scratching picks (one was for 6 to Johnathon Louis). All in all, Honey Badgers got one last shot late as Broccasion simply couldn’t seem to put this one to rest and Jordan Moses caught a tipped pass off Johnathon Louis/Dilan Daoust’s hands simply to walk/flip/turn it in to tie the game. Regardless of the late penalty on last play of the game, Broccasion didn’t have it in them to get 2 points out of this encounter.

Lonnie Johnson is really starting to click with his receivers on TOPSZN as they finally start to make strides and defeat Les Blues Branleurs late on Sunday night. With Akeem Hoyte-Charles coming down with an interception (one of the two Nicholas Schaefer threw that night) to end the first quarter, TOPSZN was looking pretty good after 22 minutes of play. With 4 different receivers catching touchdowns, their offense managed to put up 37 points and walk away happy with their performance. Les Blues Branleurs’ roster continues to confuse me as they field different players every week.

Coyotes took the field against La Sauce on Sunday at Papineau and weren’t expecting the men in purple to be able to keep up with their high flying offense this well. In fact, stats-wise, Francois Raymond had a better night than Sammy Feder (although they both played tremendous football) and La Sauce sadly had to bag this one as a loss as they managed to put up 46 points. In fact, when it was all said and done, La Sauce made the Coyotes’ defense look pretty bad just as much as Coyotes did to La Sauce’s Cory Kennedy continues to excel as a receiver with Francois Raymond throwing the football just as much as Kevin Smuda does with his QB. With their increase in play with each passing week, I’m eager to see how La Sauce will perform in their final showdown.

Keyport Lock got their first win of the season against a Brunch Buddies roster that needed that win really badly to secure a playoff berth. In fact, due to the loss, we’re in a tough spot to now make the playoffs while Jeff Rosenblatt and co. walked away proud of the way they balled. With a 13 points lead with only 2 plays left before halftime, I was confident in my teams’ chance, but Jeff Rosenblatt found Jeremy Cola for a chunk of yardage and Yoni Lehrer in the endzone and next thing I knew we were down 1 point by the time I got the ball back in the 2nd half. All in all, Keyport Lock played better than we did and walked away with their first W of the season; no shame here, they’re a much better team than people give them credit for when their guys show up.

No Big Deal dealt No Fly Zone their first loss of the season and placed themselves in a spot to conquer the first seed heading into the playoffs. In fact, No Big Deal’s defense deserves praises for the way they balled out and kept Rich Humes’ offense to only 18 points the entire night. On the flip side, Jake Applebaum got the job done when his team really needed him to and that’s all one could ask out of their QB. With the way No Big Deal has been playing, even without the presence of Jordan McLaren, there’s very little doubt that they’ll be a troublesome matchup into the playoffs; their offense is great and their defense is even better. That being said, there’s very little doubt that No Fly Zone will bounce back from said performance.

Power Rankings

  1. Coyotes (8-1-0): When defense fails, offense doesn’t.
  2. No Fly Zone (8-1-0): And down they go.
  3. No Big Deal (7-1-1): Can they keep this momemtum going for a few more weeks? That was an impressive victory.
  4. Former Tomahawk (7-2-0): James Goulet is really lighting it up. That receiving corps is a nightmare to try and match.
  5. Top Sauce (7-1-1): A bad week and, yet, manage to come out with a point.
  6. Show me Your TDs (6-3-0): A statement game from SMYTDs.
  7. Honey Badgers (6-2-1): The slump continues.
  8. Stockton Slap (5-4-0): Annnddd just like that, they are back on everyone’s radar.
  9. 69ers (5-3-1): A bad week or a bad matchup? Either way, it wasn’t pretty.
  10. Broccasion (5-3-1): Their defense is keeping them afloat.

FlagPlus Fantasy Football

What a week for fantasy. I expected both of these teams to show up and ball and they did exactly that. With beyond impressive numbers and performances from some of their players, we’ve had the highest scoring affair of the season. JD Joly prevails, but there’s no stabs at GM Kolethras here.

Here’s the breakdown of last week’s results:

Last week’s MVP: Sammy Feder (Coyotes) AND Alec Cerantola (Broccasion)

This week’s edition is a bit different due to unforeseen events: our champion cannot draft so we’ll get 2 different challengers.

First challenger is Sean Avraam. Some of you may know him for being part of the hated Grip n’ Rip squad. He’s also been part of FPF for as long as I can remember and is the QB for Division C’s very own The Commission. We’ll see if his in-depth knowledge of our league as a whole will have any benefits in fantasy.

Our second challenger is Vince Nardone. Not only does he throw for Top Sauce in Division C, but he also plays for The Incredibles in Division B and is part of the podcasts for Division A/B (also wrote for FPF last few seasons). This segment was basically his own idea, so he should have figured it out by now.

Let’s remind everyone of the simple rules we follow weekly:

  • Cannot draft someone from your own team
  • Cannot draft the same player twice (Gives an edge to Challenger)
  • Winner stays. Loser’s out.
  • Challenger picks first.

Here’s the scoring format we’ll be using this season:

Quarterbacks

  • 1 point per 15 yards passing
  • 3 points per passing TD
  • 1 point per 5 yards rushing
  • 5 points per rushing TD
  • – 2 points per interception
  • – 1 point per sack

Receivers

  • 1 point per 5 yards
  • 5 points per TD

Rusher

  • 7.5 points per sack

Defense

  • 1 point per 3 tackles
  • 1 point per 2 PD’s
  • 2 points per sack
  • 3 points per INT
  • 5 points per pick-six
  • 10 points for allowing 10 points or less
  • 8 points for allowing 11-20 points
  • 6 points for allowing 21-30 points
  • 4 points for allowing 31-40 points
  • 2 points for allowing 41-50 po ints
  • 1 point for allowing 51 + point

Quick notes:

  • Former Tomahawk is the first and only team that has clinch a division title. Well done boys!
  • There’s only 2 spots left in Conference A as Coyotes, Honey Badgers, Top Sauce, Show me Your TDs, 69ers and Broccasion have now clinched.
  • Unless Gotham Knights or La Sauce wins, Eskimo Brothers will clinch even in a loss.
  • Jagerbomb are in a very favorable spot right now at 10 points and an “easy” game ahead of them.
  • With La Sauce facing Show me Your TDs, Gotham Knights playing Broccasion and Eskimo Brothers playing Coyotes, I have NO idea how this will all turn out.
  • Conference B is slightly different as No Fly Zone, Former Tomahawk, No Big Deal, No Name, Stockton Slap and BearSkins have clinched.
  • The Commission clinches with a win. Could drop out with a loss + a win from Varennes.
  • MVE clinches with a win. Could drop out with a loss + a win from either Varennes or Brunch Buddies
  • Varennes clinches with a win. Are out if they lose.
  • For Brunch Buddies to make it in, not only do they need to win, but they’ll also need BearSkins to beat Evolution, The Commission to beat MVE and Stockton Slap to beat Varennes.
  • Overall, it’s bound to be a crazy week 10 for many, many teams.

Picks of the week

So, I was basically wrong. Going 6/12 (two ties did hurt) is far from what I expect out of myself. Just shows how crazy Division C has been this week. It’s a good thing, by the way.

Here’s this week’s picks:

Eskimo Brothers vs Coyotes: Coyotes

Broccasion vs Gotham Knights: Broccasion

TOPSZN vs Top Sauce: Top Sauce

Jagerbomb vs Killa Beez: Jagerbomb

Show me Your TDs vs La Sauce : La Sauce

Honey Badgers vs 69ers: Honey Badgers

No Name vs No Fly Zone: No Fly Zone

MVE vs The Commission: The Commission

Brunch Buddies vs No Big Deal: —-

Les Blues Branleurs vs Keyport Lock: Keyport Lock

Warhawks vs Former Tomahawk: Former Tomahawk

Varennes vs Stockton Slap: Stockton Slap

BearSkins vs Evolution: BearSkins

That sums it for this week’s article. It’s always a pleasure to write and hear back from you guys. After all, the content is meant 99% for you. I keep a percent for me; ranting here and there is fun after all. You can always reach me via twitter @DagenaisFPF or via email ([email protected]). I’ll be at Lachine every Sunday night scorekeeping/playing and at the new Stade on Mondays so you can stop by and chat. Don’t hesitate. Eagle finds a way to make everything about Pokemons. It’s kinda awesome and troubling at the same time.
