Week 6’s preview along with the second half of my mid-season breakdown

Midseason – Part 2

Every year, we build up these amazing expectations for the SuperBowl. We prepare these great parties, we hype up the game and expect to see the best go at each other’s throats for 3 long hours with a good halftime show and amazing commercials. It’s like a dream come true.

And then reality kicks in: Quebec bans the great commercials, the halftime show is usually a very female-oriented experience that isn’t all that great and the game usually sucks aside from a few great plays. In fact, taking 2 teams that never faced each other in recent history rarely makes for great games. It’s just NFL facts.

From the previous introduction, most of you can assume I wasn’t pleased with how the game turned out. Sure, defensive battles are part of the game and Denver played their game plan perfectly playing positioning on the field rather than showing how explosive they can be and there’s beauty in that, but entertainment-wise, it wasn’t top notch. I mean, even Eli Manning agrees with me (http://www.techinsider.io/video-eli-manning-face-super-bowl-50-2016-2)

Enough with non-FPF related matters. I believe most of you already skipped the useless introduction and moved on to the actual content, so I shall do the same.

Let’s get started.

Week 5

This whole “week 5” thing is sucha lie. There’s, technically, no week 5 in Division 4. There’s one for Div2 and Div6, but not for us. Enjoy it. Bye weeks are rare and we all have real lives, you know, the thing you do outside FPF.

Thoughts of the Week

  • Marshawn BeastMode Lynch is retiring. I’m sad. At least Steve Smith Sr is coming back for another season.
  • What a shitty SuperBowl. Regardless of who you were cheering for, it wasn’t an entertaining game to watch.
  • ZOOLANDER 2 (Trailer found here) and Deadpool (Trailer found here) are coming out this week. I will not blame any living soul for missing a game this weekend. I’ve seen both already and they are amazing.
  • Harry Potter getting an 8th book coming out this summer. I feel young again.
  • So many news, so little time.
  • The bye week was a good week. I know it’s not the same without FPF, but I can tell many of you needed some time off for your “other needs” and to heal wounded bodies. I expect to see fire this week.
  • This season’s breakdown was MUCH easier to write now that I split it in two. It’s a serious revelation.
  • Somehow, this week, I stumbled across these amazing vintage ads (Okay, I say stumbled, but what really happened was Peeze sent it to me via message). It’s amazing and worth the short read. Here
  • I’m actually looking forward to hitting the turf again this upcoming Sunday.
  • I’m quite sad the NFL is over. I’m not sure what I’ll be doing of my Sundays anymore.
  • The race for QB of the year is extremely tight in Div4A. At the moment, there’s about 7 guys who could arguably be named QB of the year.
  • Angelo Garofalo is having a dominant season as Team Ethnik’s #1 receiver. He’s leading the way for receiver of the year by a good stretch.
  • I see you, Michael Abiodun, leading the way with the most sacks so far. Yes, ahead of Ryan Aridi. Impressive.
  • I saw Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren play and I thought to myself how freakishly fast that guy is. He’s got more rushing yards than Kristian Cerantola and like 30% less rushes. It’s absurd.
  • At this pace, Eddy Lee is leading the charge for Defensive player of the year in Div4B. He’s dominant out there.
  • That was a lot of thoughts for a bye week.

Midseason Breakdown – Part 2

I promised and I deliver on said promises. In fact, I never break a promise; I’m that kind of guy. Enough about me, this segment is meant for you guys out there. Here’s the second half, I know you’ve all been waiting dearly.

The rules remain the same as my previous breakdown; the midseason grade doesn’t represent current performances, but they are based on my preseason predictions and how you guys turned out. Getting a “E” doesn’t mean you suck, but that you’ve been underperforming (a 2-2 team could land a E because they should be rocking a solid 4-0 by now) whereas getting a “A” means you’ve exceeded what I expected of you guys (once again, a 2-2 team could land a A if I expected them to be 0-4 by now).

Division 4A

Conference B

  • Bruthers (3-1-0)

With Bobby Mikelberg and Connor O’Brien on defense, there’s very little doubt Bruthers would have a top tier defense. The only possible concern was regarding Mikelberg’s QB abilities and, so far, he’s growing quite well. With above average numbers, his offense is excelling behind a stud defense. If their roster could solidify and remain the same week-in and week-out, Bruthers are the real deal.

Key players: Bobby Mikelberg, Connor O’Brien, Adam Browman

Midseason Grade: B+

Predicted record: 7-3

  • Warhawks (2-2-0)

Warhawks moved up division from dominating Division D into Division 4A and they seem to have found their home in the right division. With a very similar core, Warhawks’ athletism’ keeps them in the game, but they aren’t as dominant as they were last Spring and it seems to take its toll. With the ability to put up points with ease and a ball-hawking defense, I’m not worried these guys will push themselves to finish strong.

Key players: Raphael Ducas-Lapalme, Laurent Ladouceur, Fred Mallette

Midseason Grade: B

Predicted record: 6-4-0

  • Team Ethnik (1-3-0)

Team Ethnik has been playing well, but they simply can’t walk away with the W, quite frankly. They’ve lost by 12 points combined in their 3 losses, it’s absurd. Anyhow, they sit at 1-3 and looking at an uphill battle from now on. With Joey Taylor under center, Team Ethnik relies less heavily on their defense and players seem to flourish more; maybe he’s the way to go from now on. With a tough stretch of schedule coming, Team Ethnik might look at their schedule in a month time and regret dropping games by so little.

Key players: Angelo Garofalo, David De Andrade, Todd Fisher

Midseason Grade: B-

Predicted record: 3-7-0

  • The Fellowship of the Ring (1-3-0)

Although I’m not a fan of the team name, I simply can’t ignore the amazing pun. Well played, Mercille. On a side note, Fellowship of the Ring is the definition of under-achieving; with studs on both sides of the ball, enough experience to go around twice and knowledge of the game, I simply cannot understand how these guys find ways to lose. Even their stats are good. I guess Lady Luck hates your guts, JC.

Key players: Maxime Giroux, JC Mercille, Vincent Hamel

Midseason Grade: D

Predicted record: 5-5-0

  • TOPSZN (1-3-0)

With Gilbert-Knorren under center, TOPSZN’ offense is finally starting to flourish and it comes down to their defense to make plays which is what they do best. These guys are either hot or not every week and it seems to come down to whether or not they come prepared and hit the ground running or come off a sluggish start and need to play catch-up. With Gilbert-Knorren’s running ability and his offensive weapons, these guys will be putting up 30+ on a weekly basis in no time. Or maybe they should force Akeem Hoytes-Charles out of “offensive retirement”.

Key players: Jahlani Gilbert-Knorren, Akeem Hoytes-Charles, Ted Greffin

Midseason Grade: B

Predicted record: 5-5-0

  • Playground (0-3-1)

After a tough first two games, Playground turned to Steve Hovington to play QB hoping it’d spark things up, but it simply hasn’t panned out just yet. On paper, Côté and Hovington’s numbers are pretty much the same. Either he needed time to adjust and we’ll see great plays from him very soon or Playground’s season is doomed. The addition of Vincent Lauzon can only help their lackluster defense; can they find the way to turn things aroud before it’s too late?

Key players: Laurent Foucault, David Centomo, Vincent Lauzon

Midseason Grade: D

Predicted record: 2-7-1

  • Coyotes (3-1-0)

Coyotes were always known for their offensive prowess and how dominant the Feder brothers were together. Yet, this season, their defense came to play and are bolstering the 2nd best defense right behind David Hurley’s. In fact, Coyotes’ only loss came the week where Josh Feder was missing and they only lost by 1. Without expecting these guys to turn into such top dogs, Coyotes really fine-tweaked their roster and it’s built to go all the way.

Key players: Sammy Feder, Josh Feder, Andrew Langburt

Midseason Grade: A+

Predicted record: 9-1-0

  • Backyard Bullies (3-1-0)

Backyard Bullies were ranked high in my preseason ranking and haven’t disappointed. The addition of Vinny Gualano to the squad is really panning out brilliantly and he’s the perfect fit. Rich Humes continues to grow and excel under center posting very impressive numbers. They’ve been blowing teams out of the water since their week 1 struggle and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon.

Key players: Vinny Gualano, Steve Sanner, Rich Humes

Midseason Grade: B+

Predicted record: 8-2-0

  • 5-Star (2-1-1)

I’ve said it on the podcast and I’ll say it again: I wasn’t expecting much out of 5-Star this season and they’ve really impressed me so far. Without being flawless, Jordan Moses is playing smart football and he’s really growing as a QB. His receivers are talented and his defense is much better than most would expect. Aside from that bump in the road against TOPSZN, 5-Star are having a great season so far.

Key players: Jeremy Anderson, Lamar Joseph, Jordan Moses

Midseason Grade: A

Predicted record: 6-3-1

  • Frosty Bronsons (2-1-1)

I watched James Nowakowski play QB last spring and it wasn’t a pretty sight. Somehow, he returned in Winter and he’s been playing a completely different kind of football. In fact, he’s keeping his team in most games and Frosty Bronsons are enjoying a great start to their season. With a much easier 2nd half of the season, expect the Bronsons to make a good playoff push.

Key players: Danny D’Amour, Alex Holowach, James Nowakowski

Midseason Grade: A

Predicted record: 6-3-1

  • BearSkins (1-3-0)

After going 10-0 in Division 3 and challenging themselves in Division B, seeing BearSkins register in Division 4 was kind of a surprised. Considering they lost Papich and Laplante, their choice was very understandable. Nonetheless, with Bertoldi, Peterson, Libman, Sepasi in the lineup, there’s no reason Etinson isn’t performing under center and their defense isn’t making more stops. BearSkins started on the wrong foot, but there’s still 6 weeks to go; nothing’s all said and done just yet.

Key players: Jacob Peterson, Marco Bertoldi, Alex Sepasi

Midseason Grade: E

Predicted record: 3-7-0

  • ZOO (1-3-0)

After missing Francois Raymond and Kevin Marcil for the first three weeks, they finally came back and played a huge part of their first win of the season. Sadly, Raymond seems to be out once again and their defense might suffer for another stretch. With Marcil back in the lineup, Frank Kaye finally has speed to stretch the field and allow Pat St-Amand to have breathing room to make damage. With very little time to turn things around, ZOO can’t afford to drop another game anytime soon.

Key players: Pat St-Amand, Philippe-Olivier Dutrisac, Hugues Surprenant

Midseason Grade: C-

Predicted record: 3-7-0

Division 4B

Conference A

  • Sandlot Saints (3-1-0)

With their only loss coming in their week 1 matchup and by a single point, needless to say that Sandlot Saints have been impressive this season. Tim Kraemer’s offense isn’t flashy, but it works and that’s all that really matters. He’s grown into a much more conservation quarterback and it’s been helping his squad a lot. Their defense create turnovers frequently and they’re slowly turning into serious contenders.

Key players: Tim Kraemer, Jarred Murphy, Kevin Tousignant

Midseason Grade: A

Predicted record: 7-3-0

  • A-Squad (3-1-0)

Yacoub Telemaque decided it was his time to shine under center and A-Squad have been performing well under his patronage. Without posting the best numbers, Telemaque uses his legs and finds ways to move the chains and win football games. It’s always close, but that’s how they enjoy their victories. A-Squad are an emotional bunch and aren’t to be underestimated by any of their foes. They aren’t 3-1 for nothing.

Key players: Yacoub Telemaque, Junior Luke, Kerdley Micourt

Midseason Grade: A

Predicted record: 7-3-0

  • Mud Dogs (2-2-0)

Jérémie Mongeon-Duby has been excelling under center posting great numbers in his first 3 starts and Mud Dogs have been cruising ever since. With only one loss as their starting QB, Mud Dogs are much more dangerous than their record tend to show. With talented playmakers on offense and defense, these guys are just starting to make noise in Division 4B.

Key players: Olivier Laberge, Laurent Dubreuil, Jérémie Mongeon-Duby

Midseason Grade: B+

Predicted record: 5-5-0

  • Renegades (2-2-0)

Behind a much better QB than the stats show and good veterans all across the board, Renegades are somewhat underrated at 2-2. After a bit of fine tuning and some changes, they’ve came to play in their last 2 games and finished with big wins over division rivals. With a difficult schedule ahead of them, Renegades will need to jump on every occasion to maintain the ship in the right direction.

Key players: Jeffrey Lefebvre, Kevin Gauthier, Alexis Labonté

Midseason Grade: B

Predicted record: 4-6-0

  • Vnation (1-3-0)

Vnation seems to have found their rhythm on offense under Kormendi and it’s starting to pay dividends as their offense is finally flourishing and guys are starting to step up left and right. With a very winnable last 6 games and a record they can salvage, it’s within Vnation’s hands to really show up to their games and play their best football yet. They could be featured in the playoffs before it’s all said and done.

Key players: Julien Rivest, David Iannuzi, Tysen Otis Copeland

Midseason Grade: C+

Predicted record: 3-7-0

  • Mean Machine (1-3-0)

Initially, I wasn’t sold on the Mean Machine’s roster, but after seeing the ridiculous arm strength of Daniel Goloff and the lasers he throws on every single play, these guys can really turn out to be a contender by the season’s end. Mean Machine have kept all their games close and it’s just a matter of learning to finish their opponents’ off and managing the clock a bit better to turn those Ls into Ws.

Key players: Daniel Goloff, Jake Titleman, Derek Sigler

Midseason Grade: C+

Predicted record: 4-6-0

  • Longhorns (3-1-0)

After seeding Longhorns #1 in my preseason ranking, they went and shit the bed in their opener. They’ve, then, decided to show up every week and that Division 4B won’t be cake after all and have been on a winning streak ever since. With Moodie’s experience and their undeniable knowledge of the game, this could be the season Longhorns make the push all the way to the Championship game for the first time.

Key players: Rob Allen, Adam Rosen, Brian Martin

Midseason Grade: B-

Predicted record: 6-4-0

  • Hooligans (2-2-0)

Originally thinking Chris Olson was back under center, I was quite surprised to see Osman take the snaps, but it has turned out to be a pretty good fit. Hooligans are slowly turning up into a strong Division 4B team and they are slowly making noise. With such a strong defense, Osman doesn’t need to drive the field every single time and he’s bound to be much more dangerous as the season goes on. These guys could surprise more than one by the season’s end.

Key players: Matt Brown, Eddy Lee, Peter Rosol

Midseason Grade: B

Predicted record: 6-4-0

  • Show me your TDs (2-2-0)

Mike Addona is having a career year, yet, his team is sitting at .500. Looking at their offensive numbers, Addona has 21 TDs for 1 Interception in 4 games. How are they losing? With the highest QB rating in the division, Addona needs to whip some sense into that defense if he wants to win football games because he really isn’t to blame. And how is Julien Bellavance still without a single interception? Someone’s sleeping on it…!

Key players: Julien Bellavance, Mike Addona, Anthony Addona

Midseason Grade: C

Predicted record: 7-3-0

  • Golden Flashes (1-3-0)

Sitting at 1-3 after 4 weeks isn’t where I imagined Golden Flashes to be. With that roster and their previous success, I simply do not understand how Golden Flashes aren’t already within playoff reach. With the way FPF’ schedule are built, every game is a must-win and their last stretch will be stingy if they can’t close games sooner. With tough matchups coming up, Golden Flashes will need every tiny bit of luck to squeeze themselves into the playoffs at this rate.

Key players: Patrice Lindor, Jonathan Chevalier, Wade Jr Shallcross

Midseason Grade: C-

Predicted record: 4-6-0

  • Local 89ers (0-4-0)

Steve Crompton and Brian Larivière are back the lower divisions giving their roster another shot after last season’s fiasco. Larivière is having a heck of a season posting absolutely dominant offensive numbers, but Crompton’s numbers are average at best and their defense has holes everywhere. With only 1 interception in 4 games, Local 89ers need to strengthen their defense if they want to win some games.

Key players: Brian Larivière, Shanes Hugues, Mike Bussey

Midseason Grade: C

Predicted record: 2-8-0

  • All Black (0-4-0)

After seeing this roster on paper, I was really high on All Black and they could achieve if Lapointe grew as a QB. High stats are average at best, but their defense is getting blown out of the water every single week even if they have studs all across the board. Maybe it’s the lack of cohesion or leadership, but I still can’t explain why All Black isn’t winning more football games nor how Jesse Dupuis’ stats are so unimpressive.

Key players: Jesse Dupuis, Francis Ashfield, James Carriere

Midseason Grade: D

Predicted record: 1-9-0

The Chase

Division 4A

Les Maloudes: Chasing past Eskimo Brothers. Maloudes has the personnel to handle one man’s amazing athletism and I don’t expect Shawn Steen to be able to lift his team by himself against this kind of squad.

David Hurley, Pet Detective: Chasing past 69ers. This could be the kind of game that could really go both ways if Harbour manages to get going early and take the pressure off his defense, but he hasn’t been playing his best football this season and I don’t see that changing this week.

Division 4B

The U: Chasing past War Pigs. Although they do not blow teams out of the water, War Pigs simply don’t match well against The U’s speed. It won’t be a slaughterhouse, but it won’t be pretty neither.

FlagPlus Fantasy Football

I’ve decided to add my prediction as to who will win the matchup after a few comments/requests. Name in bold is, obviously, my pick to win it this week. Step up.

Last Week’s Winners

Pat St-Amand vs Andrew Langburt: Pat St-Amand

Fred Mallette vs JC Mercille: Fred Mallette

Jean-Felix Daloze vs Alex Lamarche: Alex Lamarche

Kevin Boustany vs Corey Oliver : Corey Oliver

Adrien Dusautois vs Mendy Cardichon: Mendy Cardichon

Jeffrey Lefebvre vs Jake Titleman: Jeffrey Lefebvre

Dustin White vs Jonathan Lemieux: Dustin White

Julien Rivest vs Junior Luke: Julien Rivest

Division 4A

The Head to Head

  • Adam Rockman (Recipe 4 Disaster) vs Kyle Lebofsky (Broccasion): Very typical scenario: A shutdown corner in Lebofsky will line up in front of Applebaum’s favorite receiver in Rockman on the outside. Expect fireworks. And let’s not forget just how deadly Lebofsky is offensively.

Position Matchup

  • Simon Duchesne (Jagerbomb) vs Jonathan Grizzley (No Name): In this week’s QB matchup, Jagerbomb’s Duchesne really needs to find a way to bounce back after two horrible weeks whereas Grizzley earned his teammates’ respect when he stepped up last week under center. Who’ll have the better week this week?
  • Dilan Daoust (D’s Nuts) vs Tony Testa (Cougars): Dilan emerged as his brother’s favorite target this season and Tony Testa’s dominance is unavoidable. Who’ll have the biggest impact in their must-win week 5 matchup ?
  • Mark Donohue (Backyard Bullies) vs Thomas Zorko (Frosty Bronsons): In this week’s rusher matchup, Donohue will face Zorko. Both highly underrated and stats don’t show how talented these two guys are. Who will end up with the most flags in hands by the end of the hour?

Division 4B

The Head to Head

  • Julien Rivest (Vnation) vs Brian Larivière (Local 89ers): Larivière is having a monster year in Division 4B, but let’s not forget Rivest’s consistency and dominance on both sides of the ball for the past 4 weeks. It should make for a great head to head.

Position Matchup

  • Chris Pinsonneault (Crimson Tide) vs Hai Minh Luong (J’s): This week’s QB matchup has both the favorite to win the QB of the year award going head to head. Will this influence the award winner at the end of the season? Most likely.
  • Rob Allen (Longhorns) vs Jeffrey Lefebvre (Renegades): This week’s WR matchup has two FPF veterans going against each other. Both leading their team’s receiving stats, they’ll just have to prove to all of us who can have the biggest impact this week
  • Neil Rubin (Keyport Lock) vs Jean-Mathieu Vidal (Bromigos): This week’s rusher matchup has two top tier rushers going at it as their team tries to pierce through the pack into the power ranking. A good defense starts with a good rusher. Who ‘ya got?

Previews

Division 4A

  • At the start of the season, I would never have guessed Team Ethnik and The Fellowship of the Ring would be 1-3 during the break, but they’ll take the field as they return from the bye and one of the two will end up only 1 win by the end of the night. Mercille has been posting great numbers under center, but never seem to be enough to elevate his team to a W whereas Team Ethnik’s revolving door at QB leaves us with many question marks. Expect TFOTR to cover Garofalo and reduce his ridiculous numbers. On the other hand, Giroux, the division’s leading yard receiver, could have another fantastic game as his speed might end unmatched most of the night. Look for Mercille to exploit mismatch and put pressure on his defense.
  • The only two 3-1 teams in Conference A will face off as Broccasion takes on Recipe 4 Disaster on Saturday. Luckily for me, I’ll be scorekeeping the game and allowed a premier seat to a great matchup. Ryan Aridi won’t allow Cerantola to use his legs freely and we might see a more pocket-passer-Cerantola emerge as Lebofsky will try to elevate his game against a gritty defense. Applebaum has the weapons to spread the football around and leave Lebofsky bored for most of the game. It’ll come up to the #2 of both teams to step up and post great numbers to lead their teams to the victory. I expect both of these veteran teams to lock down the #1 threat and have a solid game plan prepared.
  • The, somehow, underrated Backyard Bullies will take on the surprising Frosty Bronsons returning from the break for, what is set up to be, one of the best games this week. Without being too flashy, both offenses strive behind their mobile QB and very talented receivers. They use similar offenses and are basically built the same way. With the new addition of Vinny Gualano, the Bullies are simply a pure matchup nightmare considering the D1-D2 caliber safeties roaming the backfield and forcing throws underneath to more than capable defenders surveying. Nowakowski will face his tougher defense thus far; will he fly high or crash and burn? Time will tell.

Division 4B

  • Vnation are slowly starting to find their rhythm and make some noise in Division 4B as they’ll face a very similar team in Local 89ers when they return from the break. Vnation’s offense is emerging under Kormendi and their defense is led by two-way stud Julien Rivest. Facing a winless team, Vnation needs to step up and find a way to reduce Brian Larivière’s impact as he emerged the #1 target for Steve Crompton over the season. As both teams try to redeem their season before the final bell tolls, it’ll be the kind of matchup that all players look back upon in a few weeks and ponder what could’ve been.
  • Red Sharks started the season red hot, but came crashing down hard in the past 2 weeks facing tougher competition. With a matchup against Smash Bros, Red sharks’ speed might have finally found their match as Smash Bros’ players are all quite fast themselves. With Paul Santache leading the charge on both sides of the ball and a very underrated rusher in Dylan Weiss, expect Luis Begin to look use his arm more than his legs; which might not be his best bet at the moment. Unless Red sharks’ defense finds a solution to Jonah Cohen’s 1-2 punch, this could be over by halftime.
  • In this week’s game of the week in D4B, the 3-1 Crimson Tide will face the 3-1 J’s in a battle for supremacy. Considering this game to be a divisional match that could have very serious playoff repercussion and an impact on the QB of the year award, I don’t see any of these teams taking the challenge lightly. On one side, Pinsonneault’s offense has been putting up CRAZY numbers week-in and week-out via the deep throws whereas Luong’s offense tends to rely on shorter throws and a more mechanical offense. Both defenses match up poorly against their opponents, so expect a very high scoring affair!

Picks of the week

Disastrous. That’s the only word that comes to mind when I look at how I predicted last week’s games. I don’t really care for Doston’s performance, mine was simply subpar and unacceptable. Come on, guys. If I picked you, step up. Or if I didn’t, lose intentionally. You’re making me look bad here!

My awful 10 / 23 (Div4A 5/12 and Div4B 5/11) doesn’t even break the 50%. Doston’s coin has been luck mathematically. For his part, Doston managed a 13 / 23 (Div4A 5/12 and Div4B 8 /11) ratio which isn’t good, but better than me to maintain a significant 4 point lead. I’m not happy.

May the prediction Gods help me and curse Doston.
