Week 6 Recap, FPF Community Picks and Tier Headlines

Hey hey! Iggy Magnets back in Montreal, but, as I just found out today, I will be back in, you guessed it, St. Louis. No, it’s not déjà vu, you are reading the same opening sentence as my last article because it’s true… my life has become 1 week in the MTL for every 1 week in the STL.. at least I get back in time for FPF Sundays to play my games, so it could be worse. We’re done with Week 6 and heading into Week 7, as we reach the 75% mark of the season, and that means the playoff picture in each Tier is starting to take shape.

Don’t forget the FPF Community picks will be up later tonight on Instagram! Other than voting just for fun, don’t forget that if the FPF Community beats out the FPF staff and you voted in at least 4 different weeks, you will be entered in a draw to win 1 of 2 FPF credits of $50 that you can apply as soon as this upcoming Winter 2022 season! In Week 6, the Community went 1 up and 3 down, while the FPF staff went 2-2. The Community is now tied at 8-12 with the FPF Staff. Remember to follow @flagplus on IG and vote for the games posted on Saturday evening into Sunday!!

Tier Headlines

Alright, so I like starting out my articles for getting a pulse of each Tier, especially as the season nears its finale and the playoff picture starts to take shape. So let’s see what’s been going on, starting with Co-Ed.

Co-Ed Cup Headlines

  • Kiss My End Zone had a double header in Week 6 and came away with 2 victories.
  • The Rock is The Real Deal. I and the rest of the KMEZ players were very impressed with The Rock’s play calling from Carol-Ann Ménard, the great hands across all the receivers, and the speed they possess.
  • With a few more FPF seasons under their belts, The Rock they will be a team to look out for. They are already showing improvements this season: Scoring 51 points in their first 4 Prelim games, The Rock has already scored 46 points in 2 Qualification Round games.
  • There are 3 teams believed to be atop the Co-Ed Tier: EZFun, KMEZ and Y&Y, but I found myself asking myself this week: Who is the favorite in Co-Ed? It’s a question that has been asked, and at first I thought it was EZFun, but I’m not so sure about that three quarters of the way into the season.
  • Week 7 is a rematch week, as The Rock look to get revenge over Kiss My End Zone and La Secte try to keep their playoff hopes alive when they play against EZFun in back-to-back weeks.
  • With KMEZ and EZFun tied at 5-1, the season finale looks like it will be a game that determines the #1 seed.
  • Carol-Ann Ménard (The Rock) leads the Tier and is the only QB with over 100 completions (102).
  • Ryan Dobbs-Garnett (Y&Y) is leading Co-Ed in receiving yards (348), receptions (39), and is T-4th in TDs (6).
  • Anne Riopel (The Rock) leads the Tier with 9 sacks on the season.

Tier 1 Headlines

  • Blessed remains undefeated with a 5-0-1 record and Steve H has proven he can not only play, but lead the top Tier in the Fall Cup.
  • It truly is rematch week in FPF, as all 3 matchups in Week 7 are rematches of Week 6. Which teams will get their revenge and which teams will fall 2-0/0-2?
  • The biggest of the rematches is Mangoose vs. EZW, the 5th and 6th seeds that are currently on the outside of the playoff bracket looking in. Mangoose got the better of EZW, but in a tight 1 score game. EZW will be looking to stave off elimination and keep their playoff hopes alive.
  • Top 4 teams make the playoffs in Tier 1, so as of today, EZW and Mangoose are on the outside looking in.
  • Thomas Coutu (Mangoose) had a Week 6 performance that is worthy of a 2-way player of the year candidacy. 8 receptions on 13 targets, 93 yards, 3 TDs, 1 tackle and 3 sacks. Those 93 yards have propelled Coutu to a Tier 1 high 422 yards on the season.
  • Jeremy White (EZW) is leading the Tier 1 with 4 INTs and 166 rushing yards.
  • KGP has gone their last 2 games without Phil Cutler under center and have come away (as of today) with a 1-1 record. They’ve got Urgence Medic and Mangoose left on their schedule to try and keep the last playoff spot which they currently hold.
  • Urgence Medic at 3-3 is a little surprising. Most would have predicted they be at the top of the standings, yet they sit in the #3 spot.
  • The Apocalypse had won 4 games in a row until their loss to Blessed in Week 6. They sit in the 2nd seed with a 4-2 record.

Tier 3 Headlines

  • The Penetrators, Free Agent Squad, Save the Turftles and Two Inch’s Gang are all undefeated since the beginning of the Qualification Round, but only Free Agent Squad is truly undefeated on the season at 6-0 after a 33-19 win over FSU.
  • Officially eliminated from the Knockout Round (aka. Playoffs): Lockdown, The Stormers, and Demons.
  • TuneSquad have dropped their last 3 games and have a big game on Sunday against Post Malone’s Knights, who are looking to string back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
  • A couple of 4-2 teams battle it out to try and make the Cash Bracket (seeds 1-4) in The West Yard vs. Save a Horse. Both teams are on 2-game losing streaks and neither want to make it 3 in a row.
  • PMS wants a crack at the Cash Bracket, but will need to go through the undefeated Free Agent Squad if they want a shot.
  • Emile Skaf (Free Agent Squad) is leading his teams to victories with the most TDs thrown (28) and is T-1st with Frankie Scalzo in Completion %, both completing 2/3rd’s of their passes.

Tier 2 Headlines

  • Chocolate Thunder is not only atop the standings, but they have the most Points For to show for it (227), and Kano has 24 TDs and a mere 2 INTs on the season.
  • Surprisingly, Bruins, Tough Lungs and Ravens have all gone 0-2 in the Qualification Round.
  • After struggling in the Preliminary Round going 1-3, Los Siete Amigos have gone 2-0 in the Bottom Half Pool in the Qualification Round, with wins against Pincellos and Centaures.
  • No team has been officially eliminated from the Knockout Round in Tier 2.
  • Nikki Papich and Tim Horner combined for 6 INTs in the Prelim Round, but have combined for 0 INTs so far in the Qualification Round. Still, Chocolate Thunder have the least Points Against (80).
  • Dawson Pierre made his return to FPF, and had 7 receptions on 8 targets and hauled in 3 TDs. The man is a beast and incredibly difficult to defend!
  • HSS vs. LSA is an interesting matchup this week, as both teams are 3-3.
  • KGP Ra vs. Glogang is another one, a battle to get out of the basement and into the Knockout Round.
  • Team Ethnik vs. Arouch is an intriguing matchup for a spot in the Cash Bracket and may be the Game of the Week in Tier 2 (not Rivest’s video highlight, but just the best game in Tier 2 in Week 7).
  • Matthew Lerner is leading Tier 2 in Passing Yards (1,163) and Completions (118).
  • David de Andrade is your Pick leader in the Tier with 6 INTs.

Game Recap – Week 6

Tier 1 Recap: Mangoose 31 – 26 EZW

The first Mangoose drive was a methodical drive down the field, about 5-6 yards at a time, coupled with a 10 yard penalty by Boucher-Cyr, the 9-play drive resulted in Thomas Coutu‘s 1st TD of the night.

For EZW, their first drive wasn’t as productive as Mangoose’s, with 2 incomplete passes and a 0 yard gain, they did what Peeze absolutely hates; they punted the ball on 4th and 10. After 2 incompletions of their own, Mangoose and Nic Schaefer converted on 3rd down for a 40-yard TD to his favourite receiver, Coutu.

After that, EZW went to work and Jeremy White did what he does best, starting the drive with a 12-yard run. An 18-yard reception later to Etienne Laurence-Gervais, and that set up White to connect with JC Ferland for the 10-yard TD. Following that TD drive, the Mangoose offense went flat with 3 straight incompletions and were forced to return the punt favor.

With the defense getting them a stop, Jeremy made the best of the next drive in quick fashion. After a 6-yard run, he hit Boucher-Cyr for a 34-yard TD to tie the game 13-13. The quick-strike offense is something both teams excel at, as evidenced with the 34 and 40-yard TDs they exchanged. It makes these 2 teams a scary low-seed to play against if you don’t watch out. And when the offense, at least the Mangoose offense, would go on their next drive, they twice went back-to-back incompletions on 1st and 2nd down, and Schaefer and the boys converted once on 3rd down and then on 4th down to punch it into the endzone, for Thomas Coutu‘s hat-trick of TDs, all in the 1st half of play to conclude the opening half.

With the score 19-13 at the half, the game dramatically shifted gears, as EZW would start the drive on offense. Usually that means good things for EZW, but Coutu took his talents over to the defensive side of the ball, and had an opening 2nd half sack, and on 4th and 9, this time EZW decided to go for it, and Coutu sacked Jeremy again, pushing EZW back 12 yards. This setup the Mangoose offense at the 5-yard line and Schaefer rifled one in to Christophe Lapointe for the 1-yard TD. With the score 25-13, and both teams exchanging drives where they could not convert on 4th down, this is an obvious advantage to Mangoose, as time was the enemy for EZW. JC Ferland would score his 2nd of the game, but, just as they did on their first drive, Mangoose went on an other 9-play TD drive, as Lapointe capped off the drive with his 2nd of the game with 1:00 minute left in the game.

EZW would go on to score with 3 plays remaining (Ferland‘s hat-trick of his own) to make the score look closer, but it was truly a 2-score game that Mangoose won.

Players of the game

EZW Player of the Game: Jean-Christophe Ferland – 3 receptions, 4 targets, 23 yards, 3 TDs, 2 tackles

Mangoose Player of the Game: Thomas Coutu – 8 receptions, 13 targets, 93 yards, 3 TDs, 1 tackle, 3 sacks

Game previews – Week 7

Co-Ed Preview: EZFun (5-1) vs. La Secte (0-6)

La Secte will be looking to return the favour for last week’s loss to EZFun, a game that got out of reach early for La Secte, down 32-7 by halftime. HOWEVER, I like that on their first drive, La Secte went for it on 4th and 4 on their own 16 yard line on the first 4 plays of the game. They’ve clearly been reading our articles and watching Calling The Audible that only in certain scenarios is it worth punting in FPF. Also, at 0-6, they don’t really have much to lose. They went for it and converted with a 9-yard reception by Valerie Frappier. She’s an interesting, yet under-utilized target for Beauchamp-Desbois, as she stands tall over defending men and women alike. She also has good hands as a receiver and should be receiving a few more targets per game, in my opinion. This past weekend, she got 3/4 of her targets for 34 yards. Like I mentioned, she has a significant height advantage that should be exploited.

Back to La Secte and their 4th down attempts, they once again went for it on the next 4 plays, but this time Beauchamp-Desbois was sacked by JC Ferland for the turnover on downs. From there, EZFun is a well oiled machine on offense and difficult to stop for any team, but for La Secte to give themselves a chance to win, need at least 1 stop on D in the half. Jeremy and EZFun went 4/4 in the first half. The other thing La Secte needs to prevent, is turning the ball over, especially when a pick goes back for 6 like it did last week when Boucher-Cyr returned his pick to the house.

What I see from La Secte is that they are their best when they are marching the field 4-5 yards at a time. Too many times in their game against EZW were they facing 3rd and 4th-and-10 scenarios, which led their 4th down conversion rate to be 20% (1/5). They need more of what happened on the first 4 plays, where they are going for it on 4th-and-short, not 4th-and-long. And once they do drive the field, they converted both Redzone opportunities into touchdowns.

As for this week, EZFun needs to do pretty much run their own offense and practice their D coverage and communication, as they have clinched a playoff spot and are looking to lock the #1 seed in Week 8 when they matchup against Kiss My End Zone.

For La Secte, drive that field and kill the clock to limit the number of possessions Jeremy White has the ball in his hands. While it can make for a bit of a boring FPF game, what’s better than winning? Take 39 out of the 40 seconds each snap and drive the field 4-6 yards at a time (and score, of course). This will, hopefully, give Jeremy only 2 possessions each half. What you want is to not let the game get away from you; make it a close affair so that each play becomes more and more crucial. Alyson Francillon‘s pick last week came when the score was 32-7. But if that pick comes when the score is 14-7, it increases the value of the play.

That being said, even if La Secte can execute my suggested game plan, the EZFun offense is too efficient and would likely score on all 4 or 5 (limited) possessions they would get.

Prediction score: EZFun 31 – 14 La Secte

As the FPF Cup’s regular season is coming to a close, don’t forget to vote for the FPF Community Picks on Instagram live on Saturdays. As mentioned at the top of the article, The FPF community can now make their own picks that go against the FPF media and if the Community beats out the FPF staff picks, you can win one of two $50 FPF credits that you can use as soon as this upcoming Winter 2022 season!

Well that does it this week for my Week 6 article, but make sure you read my fellow article writers, Peeze Della Reeze‘s and Alexi Dubois‘ article and catch Calling The Audible and the FPF Games of the Week!

Peeze’s article: https://www.flagplusfootball.com/en/article/11-and-only-11-part-1

Alexi’s article: https://www.flagplusfootball.com/en/article/lots-still-to-play-for-with-playoffs-weeks-away

A quick reminder that I will once again be out in St. Louis next week, so who knows if I will have enough time to write an article, let’s hope I do, or maybe I’ll catch a Blues game. Good luck to everyone in the Qualification Round!

Cheers,

Iggy Magnets
