Week 3: Highs and Lows

And there were 7.

Going 10-0 (and even possibly 14-0) is a remarkably feat in FPF. Actually, I believe only 7 teams in FPF history managed the infamous 14-0 season.

With only 7 teams left in Division 4 (Out of 44, not bad) are undefeated. Neither play each other this season, so it’s possible the streak will prolong itself, but I doubt it. At least one will fall this week.

Let’s get started

Week 3

Savage Squad’s rollercoaster season continues, Game Changers continue to impress somehow, could Fun Boys really be a top contender this season? Jagerbomb looked like themselves once again, SMYTDs finally looked the part, the question mark around Lonzo Ballers is bigger than ever and GloGang upsets!

All in all, D4 at its finest.

Thoughts of the Week

  • Maybe we overrated The Sheriff
  • Stefano’s #1 team in Division 4B, Les Blues Branleurs has looked good, but I wouldn’t go THAT far.
  • Small Giants has a reality check against Ghosts; two-tiered division?
  • Air Force 1 were shutout by The Infantry. THIS was shocking news.
  • I don’t care what the reason was, you can’t spear someone from 30 yards away. Unless you’re paid millions and your name is Goldberg.
  • Although Pub Epoxy has been in D4 for quite some time now, maybe it’s time for them to play in D5?
  • The Stoics “upset” Past Our Prime with their starting QB present. Maybe I overrated POP? Underrated Stoics? Who knows.
  • Ugly loss from Soft Serve.
  • Baby Kangaroos falter against their first real opponent this season. Schedule is only getting harder in the next couple of weeks.
  • The Tide kept GHB in check. Maybe it’s time to stop underestimating them?
  • What’s going with All Hooks? They haven’t looked like their former-self in quite some time now. Their defence remains top-notch, but Charles-Olivier Lavigne hasn’t played up to his recent success yet this season. Rust?
  • Ugly loss by Don’t Mess With Texas sees them drop OUT of the Power Rankings. Can they claw their way back in?
  • If my Power Rankings included 11 teams, Jagerbomb would have been in. Another clutch win will see them rise through the ranks again though.
  • I wonder who would actually win in a battle between an actual Sphinx vs a pack of Wolverines
  • Do Wolverines travel in packs?
  • All hooks vs MTL Originals was a very close 2nd for my Game of the Week vote in 4B. Which makes The Sheriff vs A-Squad third? Crazy.

Recaps

  • Half-A-Stars vs Wolverines: This 47-0 blowout has a bit more story than a flat out blowout. Half-A-Stars came into this game red hot as the storm had finally past and Wolverines never got settled in. Jordan Prizant was efficient and scored on key turnovers to really put this game away early, but Wolverines’ offence was suffering from one too many problems to actually be efficient on the day. Starting with with an handful of bad snaps that forced QB Shane Paquette to make acrobatic catches and lose way too much time in the pocket, his first reads were no longer available and he ended up forcing way too many throws that went in Half-A-Stars’ direction. I actually don’t think it was a bad game play-calling wise for Wolverines, but they got off to a poor start and it sort of snowballed into a frustrating hour. I don’t foresee such a display to repeat itself anytime soon for these guys.
  • Don’t Mess With Texas vs SMYTDs: For all you podcast enthusiasts, in week 2, Moe Khan and I debated the outcome of this game; Moe Khan said Don’t Mess With Texas needed a big outing to prove they’re a real contender and don’t just beat on weaker teams. We also said SMYTDs can’t afford to go 0-3. DMWT came out flat as Fred Mallette never looked comfortable in the pocket and struggled to move the chains consistently as SMYTDs got an early lead (thanks to Jonathan Lyristis for his first drive as Mike Addona showed up late) and the rest was history. SMYTDs adjusted well defensively across the board (sure, a TD or two in blown coverage, but overall it was satisfactory) and took away what Fred Mallette was trying to do. Laurent Ladouceur took over for the final drive of the game and managed to drive the field efficiently with underneath patterns and keeping it simple. One can only wonder whether Fred Mallette is injured or needs to change his play-calling to something less flashy, more efficient.
  • SWAT vs Lonzo Ballers: I won’t go too much into details as Lance Daniels gave us a REAL NEAT Game of the Week to look at and judge for ourselves, but this game ended up being much closer than I’ve anticipated. With Lonnie Johnson sidelined once again, Quaid Johnson did the best he could at QB, but SWAT got into his head and he lost his temper before half. The second half was a mix of frustration and “trying too hard” that ended up not going his way. Outcome might have been different with their starting QB actually throwing the ball and Quaid Johnson playing WR/DB.

Players of the Week

  • Jad Aridi (Keyport Lock): 62 offensive yards over 5 catches won’t get you into this column, but his 4 interceptions in his team’s first win definitely will.
  • Kyle Smith (Fun Boys): 3 receiving TDs, 69 yards and an interception. He had himself a night in week 3.
  • Zach Aaron (Half-A-Stars): With 54 receiving yards, 3 TD, 2 interception and a PD, Zach Aaron loaded up the scoresheet in his team’s favor.
  • Antoine Roger (Ballers): 236 combined yards, 6 passing and 1 rushing TD, no turnovers and a 135.3 QBR. Quite the night!
  • Charles Verreault (Ghosts): 125 receiving yards, 5 touchdowns and an interception. He keeps putting up record numbers week-in and week-out.

Power Rankings

Division 4A

  1. Game Changers (3-0): The best team in Division 4 after 3 weeks.
  2. Half-A-Stars (3-0): I’m done sleeping on them; they’ve been super impressive this season.
  3. EBROS (3-0): Undefeated with the second best +/- in the division. Enough said.
  4. 69ers (2-1): They are still a top contender; one loss will not define their season.
  5. Fun Boys (2-1): 4th best offence in the division? Yeah, Fun Boys are for real this Winter.
  6. The Tide (2-1): They needed a bit of time to shake off the rust, but they’re there now.
  7. The Stoics (2-1): Back to back impressive wins sees their stock rising. I might be a bit tough on them; let’s see if they can maintain this winning streak.
  8. Greendale Human Beings (2-1): Their prolific offence hit a bump in the road against The Tide last week. Let’s see how they fare against a top dog this week.
  9. Soft Serve (2-1): Simply a bad outing or does this loss mean a little more than just one bad night? We’ll see how they bounce back vs Baby Kangaroos this week.
  10. Baby Kangaroos (2-1): Lost their first real tough game. With a key game against Soft Serve this week, it’s their time to shine.

Division 4B

  1. Ghosts (3-0): They continue to roll through their opponents.
  2. MTL Originals (3-0): Probably the team I’d hate to see on my schedule the most this season.
  3. A-Squad (3-0): A-Squad continues to impress me. Good thing Moe Khan isn’t the one writing these.
  4. The Infantry (3-0): Quite the impressive victory in Week 3. They’ll only keep climbing the ranks.
  5. Les Verges Folles (2-0): Undefeated and looking real good.
  6. All Hooks (2-1): They haven’t been their impressive selves just yet, but they can’t be mad at this good 2-1 start.
  7. Check Out My TDs (2-1): Impressive win over LBB this week sees them rise through the ranks quickly. With a winnable schedule in the upcoming weeks, it’s time for COMTDs to seize their moment.
  8. Les Blues Branleurs (2-1): Their first loss of the season came in a very close game. Their loaded roster will keep them competitive all season.
  9. The Sheriff (2-1): A bad loss sees them drop a few ranks. Can they find fix the issue before it becomes problematic?
  10. Small Giants (1-1): Their only loss came to the #1 seed. I’m not worried just yet.
