Week 10: How the mighty have fallen

And there is now only ONE. Game Changers.

Ghosts and The Infantry stuttered this week and lost their way to the perfect season.

Game Changers is now sitting at 9-0 staring down the barrel of not just a 10-0 season, but also the opportunity to go 14-0. Will they be the first franchise EVER to do it twice?

Big statements on a Saturday morning isn’t it?

Week 10

69ers showed they’re in full playoff mode, Savage Squad won a close one to clinch, EBROS eliminated Sphinx, BD Bandits put on a show vs a top seed, Don’t Mess With Texas survived a tough game, SMYTDs couldn’t do enough to clinch, Les Montagnards aren’t done just yet, Air Force 1 needed a big win and got it, MTL Originals seems to be back, The Sheriff won the bragging rights and A-Squad may have found their nemesis

Thoughts of the Week

  • Back to Back ugly losses from SWAT sees them drop out of the Power Rankings with only one week left in the season. They’ll need a big game in week 11 to rectify this.
  • 4A’s playoff teams are set. Seeding will change with this week’s games, but we now know our 16 teams!
  • I might not have picked Small Giants vs Les Verges Folles for this week’s gotw due to playoff implications, but it’ll be an amazing game
  • Can GloGang make the playoffs and fight their way to a rematch vs Air Force 1?
  • Bittersweet ending for SMYTDs; it did make Keyport Lock happy though…!
  • Most of you have one more chance to go off to lock up an award. Knock yourselves out!
  • I see you Samuel Leblanc finishing with 4 sacks this week!
  • I don’t recall a week with 6 players of the week, ever. You guys really stepped it up for week 10 huh.
  • All eyes on Division 4B this weekend; Conference B is bound to be WILD
  • It’s been a while since a 5-5 team did not make playoffs in FPF.
  • You know you love FPF when you skip brunch to write these.
  • Les Verges Folles had 8 receivers with at least a catch. EIGHT!

Recaps

  • Keyport Lock vs Don’t Mess With Texas: Official Game of the Week filmed by #GOTW guy. I won’t go too much into the details as you can all see the game for yourselves (and should), but Jeremy Anderson has been an absolute monster for Jeff Rosenblatt. Maybe they should consider him as a full-time addition moving forward? Nonetheless, Don’t Mess With Texas needed a win here and took control of the game for the most part. Seeing Fred Mallette exploit different parts of the field and use many receivers here and there really elevated their offence. It’ll make for a fun playoff run!

  • The Tide vs SMYTDs: SMYTDs had a win and you’re in scenario. The Tide still has 2 games left, but were in a position to clinch with a win and knock out their opponent. Tide’s offence played well, but made some mistakes early and allowed for a weirdly close game until late. The Doug McKernan/Chris Pinsonneault connection late in the 2nd half was pure gold as they kept going back to it on key downs and no one could stop the receiver from moving the chains. Toss in a few hips move that bought Doug McKernan some time (and even ran for 15+ yards twice) and you got a blueprint to how this Tide offence has been successful. Mike Addona needed a big game and played flat against a defence that found ways to minimize his impact and a rusher that forced one too many bad throws. Tough ending to, well, a rough season altogether.

  • Les Verges Folles vs SWAT: Considering both teams clinched, the game didn’t matter THAT much in terms of playoffs contention, but it’ll definitely affect seeding down the stretch next week. After playing flat last week, SWAT wanted to bounce back, but LVF wasn’t that team to start off against. With a few bad passes and forcing one too many throws, Gino Di Fazio ended up with 3 interceptions on the night. SWAT made up for it time and time again mostly due to their elite defence, but it simply wasn’t enough as LVF maintained the lead as of very early in the game and converts ended up being in their favor.

  • Mad Bears vs Team YS: The struggle for Team YS continues as their offence struggled to put up numbers. Patrick Youssef and David Monice made some plays, but they needed more than 2 players making plays on Wednesday to take down Mad Bears. Sebastien Thibault looked unstoppable everytime he decided to run with the ball and just distributed the ball to whoever wanted 6 in the second half pretty easily. With only one game left to play for Team YS, the “nightmare” is almost over. They were a good Division 5 team last season and, with a new QB, they can be once again!

Players of the Week

  • Felix Fontaine-Larouche (Jagerbomb): 120 receiving yards, 2 TD and a pick on defence. He did as much as he could!
  • Shawn Steen (EBROS): He clearly hasn’t lost a step as he finished with a TD and 2 picks (one of which was for six)
  • Scott MacDonnel (BD Bandits): 9 Receptions, 118 receiving yards, 3 TD and a pick-six on defence. He scored more, by himself, than the other team.
  • Jeremy Anderson (Keyport Lock): 105 yards, 5 TD and a monster one-hander. Watch it on GOTW, it’s worth it.
  • Erik Brousseau (Check Out My TDs): In a must-win game, he showed up big with 225 combined yards, 7 touchdowns and a whoppin’ 141.5 QBR
  • Julien Fiset-Cyr (Les Montagnards): Playing the best team in the division? No problem. 200 combined yards, 5 touchdowns and a pick!
  • Vincent Benjamin (MTL Originals): defensive hat-trick (3 interceptions) and 2 were returned for six. WOW.
  • Justin Lerner (Small Giants): 217 combined yards, 6:0 ratio, a pick-six on defence and finished the night with a 141.8 QBR
  • Thomas Coutu (All Hooks): He spent the night tormenting Yacoub Telemaque and finished with 5 sacks. Oh and found enough energy to put up 54 receiving yards and a TD too.
  • Quaid Johnson (Lonzo Ballers): 60 receiving yards, 2 TD and 2 picks (one of which was brought back for six). Another monster week!

Power Rankings

Division 4A

  1. Game Changers (9-0): The only undefeated team left standing in all Division 4
  2. Half-A-Stars (8-2): The new #1 seed in Conference A
  3. The Stoics (7-2): An ugly loss costed them the first seed in their conference. Only a matter of time to see what kind of matchup that’ll generate now!
  4. 69ers (7-2): I’ve been a hater for too long; 69ers are finally looking like we’ve expected them preseason to!
  5. BD Bandits (6-4): HUGE win over The Stoics elevates their stock at the right time!
  6. Greendale Human Beings (6-3): Lost to a playoff contender this close to the playoffs is not a good sign, but better now than later?
  7. Past Our Prime (6-4): As long as Craig O’Brien’s throwing for this team, they’ll be a contender.
  8. Baby Kangaroos (6-3): Have the opportunity to lock up the 2nd seed in Conference B and avoid Game Changers until the very end!
  9. Don’t Mess With Texas (5-4-1): Convincing win over a playoff team in a must-win game.
  10. The Tide (5-3): Knocked SMYTDs out of the playoffs and still have 2 games left to play!

Division 4B

  1. The Infantry (8-1): Sure, it was a meaningless game, but maybe they aren’t invincible?
  2. Lonzo Ballers (8-2): They’ve been the best team in the conference at full roster.
  3. The Sheriff (7-3): HUGE win from The Sheriff this week to elevate their stocks before the playoffs. You know what they say, gotta beat the best to be the best, right?
  4. Ghosts (8-1): This team isn’t quite the same without Alexis Gaumont. What happens if he misses again, in 2 weeks?
  5. Les Verges Folles (6-2): Amazing defence, but their offence needs to get going. Now.
  6. Les Blues Branleurs (6-3): I can’t wait to see them in a week or two!
  7. A-Squad (6-3): Ugly loss right at the end of the season. Luckily, they got one more game to fix things up.
  8. All Hooks (5-4): They’re back baby. Probably the toughest lowest seed team in Division 4 altogether heading into W19’s playoffs.
  9. Small Giants (5-4): What’s the best way to enter the playoffs? On a win streak.
  10. Air Force 1 (5-5): I’ve been a doubter all season, but that was as clutch a win as it gets.
