Wednesday Night Recap – Week 7 – Laval Edition

Rancerz 19 vs. Tough Lungs 27

This game started out as you might expect and Tough Lungs wasted no time to take the lead against Rancerz. After taking 3 plays to get the first down, they scored on the 4th play with a 29 yard touchdown in the middle of the field from Matthew Lerner to Olivier Doleyres. It may not have been as pretty, but the Rancerz drove the field on their first drive as well and finally scored to be down 1 point. Those first two drives really gave those watching, albeit not very many people, some insight into how the rest of the game would play out. Tough Lungs were able to score with ease for the most part and the Rancerz just seemed to be far more stagnant on both sides of the ball.

After Tough Lungs scored quickly yet again, this time to Matthew’s brother Justin Lerner, they forced a quick punt which looked like the beginning of the end for Rancerz. Luckily enough, they were able to force a 4th down in their own territory and get a second life. Unfortunately, they didn’t do much with that chance and quickly punted after 3 consecutive incomplete passes by Guillaume Dagher.

Rancerz seemed to get a ton of chances to crawl back into this game and they simply couldn’t capitalize. After an interception against Lerner, they watched the ball sail over Dagher’s head on 1st down to put them in a bad spot. Dagher was able to get to 4th and 1 but then couldn’t convert on 4th down yet again. That’s when Tough Lungs finally said enough was enough and they scored quickly to put the game out of reach. Both teams would trade a few scores to close out the game but the early mistakes were impossible to overcome.

Jagerbomb 20 vs. The Brotherhood 25

This one was entertaining from start to finish and as I discussed on the podcast, it could have went either way. Simon Duchesne is just starting out his season and in only his second game back, looks a little rusty. I don’t think he remembers just how dominant that Theo Ojeaha can be over the middle of the field and he was a bit foolish to test him more than once, which ended up being the difference in the game.

The game started off fairly well for Jagerbomb and while they had to punt on their first drive, they stopped Brotherhood short and then followed that up with 6 points. The Brotherhood then flexed their athletic muscles and Theo told Quaysie to simply burn his defender and Theo threw a beautiful ball for 36 yards and the touchdown. The next drive is when Theo had his first interception and turned the game in Brotherhood’s favor by scoring on their next drive.

That said, with a chance to put the game away, Theo made a mistake by testing Ryan Kharouf who showed off his athleticism for an interception. Ryan was also used well on offense, being a great outlet option for Duchesne on his left side of the field and makes for a big target down the field. It felt like this was Jagerbomb’s chance to turn the momentum of the game but yet again, Duchesne make the crucial mistake of testing Ojeaha over the deep middle of the field.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Theo and Quaysie hooked up yet again on a deep touchdown to extend the lead. Jargerbomb did make it close on the next drive and then both teams traded scores but it was too little too late for Jagerbomb.

Les Loups 13 vs. Martine et le Flag 32

As lopsided as the score ended up, this game was packed with talent and entertainment throughout. William Marchand is an absolute beast on the field and guys like Darren Wiltshire, Jeff Carpentier and Guillaume Ranger also stood out. Ranger single handedly took over the game early with two pick-6s in 3 plays. Before the first one, Emile Skaf looked good, Les Loups looked far more polished and it seemed like this game would be much closer. Emile will learn quickly, though, that as a quarterback and especially in higher divisions, those kind of mistakes will cost you the game.

As I mentioned, the bright spot in this game for Les Loups was the play of Darren Wiltshire and Jeff Carpentier. Emile Skaf should look to feed both of them as much as possible as they both have home run potential on every play. Carpentier especially really turned on the jets on one play and took a regular looking slant all the way to the endzone.

As good as they looked, they clearly lack a little bit of chemistry and Emile will need to improve his accuracy and decisiveness with the football for them to have any success. They have a lot of the tools to do well, even in Division 3, but it hasn’t been a great season so far. Martine et le Flag on the other hand look extremely polished, with great team chemistry and a few weapons of their own that can beat you at any moment.

No Cap 26 vs. The Underachievers 2.0 34

No Cap are by far the most frustrating team to watch this season. Both their little brother squad, La Brume, and themselves always find ways to shoot themselves in the foot and find ways to lose. They’re a solid group of football players with a ton of talent and potential but just can’t seem to string Ws together. They played well in this game but it definitely felt like they were out of it most of the time.

Underachievers started off strong and never looked back thanks in large part to substitute player Theo Ojeaha. He took the field to replace his brother and Dylan Taylor looked his way early and often. After an early touchdown, Zach Zwirn put his stamp on the game by returning an interception for 6 points and then scoring a touchdown on their next drive. It took until one of the last drives of the first half for No Cap to finally score a touchdown and stay in the game.

Dylan Taylor and co. rarely made mistakes in this game and took advantage of the open receiver to drive down the field and score when necessary. They made the win look easy and it’s a testament to the depth that they have on the team and a good sub or two. It was strange to see a slow game for Rocco Christiano but overall the top guys on Underachievers were able to do most of the damage.
