The Underdogs Pt.2

Peeze’s Playbook

Divisional Round/Quarter Finals

By Paolo Della Rocca

Once again in a week burdened by dealdlines and having to write three articles in that span, I am tight on time.  I will get right into analysis but expect more nonsense when there are fewer games in future rounds.

The Underdogs Pt.2

As I did in the article I posted earlier in the week, I’ve focused on the underdogs in each of these matchups.  As such, it also reflects on the favourites in a contextual framework.  This wasn’t super successful in my division 6D article as no underdogs won a single game.  However, I am hopeful as many of these matchups look to be exiting games.

Channel 4 News Team vs. Sticknmovers (previous result C4NT 31- Sticknmovers 12)

    • I gave an in depth break down of the C4NT defense on the podcast this week.  In essence, they need to exploit the space provided by their quirky system.  One C4NT resort to playing man, they are less effective.
    • Benjamin Swimer is an elite rusher.  His impact in the game will be paramount.
    • Sticknmovers will need their best defenders on Noah Groper and Tyler Baliesh.  Sticknmovers play man every single play.  It’s what they’re known for so individual matchups will be important.

Prediction: Channel 4 News Team 26- Sticknmovers 19

Vick in a Box v. Guardians (previous result Vick in a Box 51- Guardians 0)

    • Kevin Marcil….Find Max Burah and never let him go.  Bring him to the “Under the Sea Dance” and see if Vick in a Box will be able to beat you with their other pieces.
    • Mathieu Girouard has been their number 1 all season long.  However, Vick in a Box are very good at taking away your top receiver. So Marcil will need to use an intelligent system of short, quick passes to break down Vick in a Box.
    • Rusher Ismail Fracillon will ensure that Kevin Marcil will not be able to run.  So if Marcil can use controlled roll outs to buy extra time and look to attack the second level.

Predicition: Vick in a Box 40-Guardians 6

The U vs. The Potatoes (previous result The U 31-The Potatoes 12)

    • The Potatoes need to be disciplined and know that the U will change their defensive looks and coverages throughout the game.  Just because something worked early it doesn’t mean that look will be there later.
    • Samuel Lamothe needs to avoid throwing the ball deep.  He doesn’t do it well and if the ball doesn’t come out well The U will be fielding punts all day.
    • JJ Cosentini is a very good player.  If he can be used to attack the sidelines more the just on drags as the The U are great at attacking quick, in-breaking routes.

Prediction: The U 37- The potatoes 20

Pension Plan vs. Blitz Babes (Previous Result: Pension Plan 21- Blitz Babes 19)

    • Matt Gottlieb needs to be smart.  When he sees Pension Plan playing the stacked defence he needs to continuously punish them by hitting the outside hook.
    • Anthony Siggia is a great two way player but an even better defender.  He plays a rover on defense.  If you can attract his attention by hitting passes infant of him, he will start to try to take that away and it will open the area behind him.
    • Junior Spera is virtually unguardable.  If Blitz Babes can play a zone that shifts into coverage and flat defender can undercut the short hooks that Spera tends to run it can lead to scores by the defense.

Prediction: Pension Plan 20-Blitz Babes 19

Bruins vs. Los Banditos (previous result: n/a)

    • LB need to force Bruins quarterback Gabriel Wiseman into making mistakes. Rusher Jeff Carrier will need to contain Gab Wiseman and keep him on one side of the field until the reads fall apart.
    • Los Banditos need to go to Vincent Benjamin.  If he gets every target, it will be too few.  There is no one on Bruins who can cover Benjamin.
    • You know what Bruins want to do.  They want to attack with Antoine Hyunh and Alexandre St-Arnaud.  Make them have to use someone else.

Figthing Flamingos vs. The Pack (previous result: n/a)

    • Fighting Flamingos are taller and faster than the Pack and there’s little that The Pack will be bale to do to stop them.  Daniel Krebs will need to go score for score with FF’s QB Stephen Harripersaud.
    • On defense, Fighting Flamingos tend to rotate a lot.  However, on each drive they often don’t change who is dropping. So the Pack receivers should have opportunity and room to work.
    • Daniel Krebs is a good athlete, running quarterbacks give rusher Mathieu Lacharite a tough time. Lacharite comes in like a charging bull and Krebs can take advantage of that.

Prediction: Fighting Flamingos 33- The Pack 12

2 Flags, 1 Cup vs. Tough Lungs (previous result 2 Flags, 1 Cup 19- Tough Lungs 18)

    • This is probably the most compelling matchup of the entire docket.
    • Justin Lerner virtually matchup proof on offense.  On defence he can be probleatic but his usage is somewhat predictable.  He tends to be the player who drops deep thus opening up short hooks in front of him.  Some different looks that allow him to shoot gaps will make this defence devastating.
    • Olivier Doleyras is the least known member of this team.  However, his ability to cover territory has been understated. He needs to step it up and make sure that the receiving corps of Ryan and Andrew Vanslet and Alex Deslauriers is kept in check.
    • Finally, I would have Daron Migdeysian rush as he would be the best candidate to prevent 2F1C QB Zach Jauniaux from running wild.

Prediction: Tough Lungs 22- 2 Flags, 1 Cup 19

Practice Squad vs. Clinkers (previous result: Practices Squad 19- Clinkers 13)

    • Sidelines floods will be quarterback Marc-Andre Desaulniers’ best friend.  Andrew Knopp is a great rusher.  His size and speed has been a problem for most quarterbacks this season. As such, avoiding reads in the middle of the field would be wise.  Desaulniers can also move the pocket left and right to change some of the throwing windows.
    • The Clinkers offence has run through Luis Begin this season.  However, Clinkers have run into issues when forcing the issue.  If Begin gets taken away someone else needs to step up.  Calling Hugo Martel on deck.
    • Mike Knopp, Cory Friedman and Ryan Castiel have been incredible for Practice Squad this season.  Clinkers need to challenge two of these three receivers and force rookie quarterback Shayne Feinberg to become more one dimensional.

Prediction: Clinkers 24- Practice Squad 13

Saturday’s Sibling Sensations

Well, my season is done for both my teams. Sad Emoji.  Does anyone still use the term emoticon?  In any case, the positive side to this is that it leaves me with more time for writing. For further analysis, tune in to the official FPF podcast Calling the Audible, where Moe Khan Simon Dagenais and I work to annoy GM Koletheras as we discuss the furriness of kiwis, how gun control impacts Lincoln more than the car manufacturers and whether or not it’s in poor taste to say, “I need a Lincoln like I need a hole in the head. Tune in to Facebook live on the FPF Facebook page on Thursday nights at 7:00pm, watch it later on www.youtube.com/flagplus or download the podcast on iTunes or Podomatic!
