The Truth: Division 2 Quarterfinals; Division 1 Semifinals

Seeing as there isn’t much for me to talk about this week, I changed things up a little bit. I had Peeze drop in on my article with a little Q&A. There is going to be a quick turn around for my next article. I should have an article written and posted before Wednesday night’s semi final games so stay tuned and ready to be entertained this week. We are a handful of days away from the finals which will be held this Saturday night in Brossard. Unfortunately for me, both my teams lost last week and I was left torn up and in shambles. I might be bitter in my commentary for a short while but bear with me.

Q&A with Peeze Della Reeze

VN: If you had the power to give any team from Div 1 or 2 a second chance this season who would it be and why?

PDR: In Division 1, I would go with CBL.  They started the season so strongly and I wanted to see how far they could ride it.  They were in first place after 4 weeks.  However, they had so much working against them.  Firstly, they had 2 ties.  Ties are death in FPF and their last 4 games were a veritable gauntlet.  However, Carmine Pollice started the season on fire and his connection with Vinny Gualano would have been an interesting plot line for this playoff season.

In Division 2, I have to say I do feel bad for Solide.  They put themselves in position to win that last play-in game and Legends did what they do best and put up a late score to knock Paul Lapierre and Co. off.  I had issues with this roster from the beginning of the season.  I liked the talents of Jonathan Lyristis, Quaysie Gordon Maule and Enrico Pierre.  Yet, this team seemed to be lacking a piece or two.  They did show something in their gritty win over #NR.  It seemed for a moment that I was wrong about their roster and I would have loved to have been wrong.

VN: You’re on the Titanic and it’s sinking with every player from Division 2. Who’s the guy you’re going back down to the basement to save?

PDR: The easy answer for me here is Jonathan Lyristis because I play with him in Div.3 and need him to survive the Titanic for our playoff game this week.  However, I figure he’s resourceful and strikes me as a good swimmer.  Jon, you’re on your own.  I would Save Fred Dupuis.  Once again, it’s for selfish reasons. Freddy Dupuis has a great arm and with all other D2 talents sinking, I save him and build a new D2 team for a modern, post-Titanic dystopia where everyone else’s hopes lie in rubble off the coast of the Canadian Atlantic border.  Also the dude seems like he would probably be fun to go fishing with.  Let’s keep our priorities straight.

VN: Who do you see winning it all this season?

PDR: In division 1 it’s always hard to go against the Finest.  I mean, it’s tough as an analyst; I also feel like I will be challenged to several rounds of tenuous, yet highly entertaining trivia with Kishon Thompson.  However, D-Boys showed us something last spring.  This season, the D-Boys beat Montreal’s Finest twice.  I don’t believe a team could necessarily have another team’s number because each game is an independent income.  I will say that the D-Boys are built to beat the Finest, and have done a good job thus far.  Come April 9th, give me Masciotra and Co.

For most of the season, I thought that Terror Squad were destined to be division 2 champions.  That said, they have looked vulnerable in some games and may be more matchup-dependent than I thought.  Conversely, I had doubts about Gladiateurs.  However, having won 5 straight, we have all had to bear witness.  I can see the Glads winning it all.  That said, Division 2 has been so unpredictable.  It has been FPF’s most entertaining division.  I am truly curious to see how it all shakes out.

VN: After such a sour ending to Wolverines’ season, do you think we’ll see them again in this division?

PDR: The Wolverines are troopers.  They keep registering in division 2 but, in all honesty, I just don’t see it.  They struggled in division B in the spring.  However, as the FPF talent pool grows we continually see the same (or similar) roster each season for everyone’s favorite Wolve-Tan-Clan.  I respect all the Wolverines have done, I respect them doing so as a group of friends for such a long time and I respect all the achievements that they’ve earned through their many seasons in FPF.  However, it is time for them to evolve.  Otherwise I would not be surprised to see them fall through the ranks.

VN: Who is the most talented team in Division 2?

PDR: For my money give me the Untouchables.  I like Jason Prince, Jordan Maclaren, Justin Lavallee and pretty much everyone else on this roster. As for their chances of winning the championship despite having such a strong, deep roster, let’s say I wouldn’t be placing my money on them.  They were inconsistent during the season and I half expect an early exit from this team.  This has all the makings of a season where they will look back and say, how did we not win it?

Recaps:

DK 48 VS Loonatics 32

I have to give Loonatics credit for staying in this game; they played extremely well. The score doesn’t give them much justice if you ask me. If Loonatics’ defense could make a tackle, we may have gotten a different outcome. On two separate occasions, a DK receiver took a hook and turned it for forty yards and a TD. First it was Nic Arsenault-Hum with the magic hips, then came the blazing speed of Serge Pilon. When it came down to scoring quickly, Paul Lapierre turned to his regular season Phenom Youssy Pierre who made an incredible one-handed catch in the end zone. Later in the game, DK’s defense proved to be too strong for Paul who threw an interception to Patrick Chenard at the back of the end zone. Chenard looked like a shark in the water all game long. I have a feeling DK wants this championship… real bad.

Got-Skills 27 Rainmakers 20

Nicolas Centomo can thank his defense for this win. It’s a rare pleasure to win a game with only 27 offensive points but it’s one Centomo can enjoy for now. Two very key interceptions were the key to this victory. Sebastien Deschamps looked like he used to back in the days where he wore maroon and gold for ConU. He defended a forty bomb like a boss and picked it off Ryan Kastner who couldn’t find any weakness in Got-Skills’ victimizing defense. JC Centomo caught his second touchdown of the game with only five plays left to seal the deal and sent the Rainmakers packing. I said giving up 20 points was impressive, well so is 27. Rainmakers showed some tough defense while getting very little backing offensively. On to bigger and better things for Got-Skills who have Finest on deck!

Game Preview

DK VS D-Boys

If you didn’t hear my thoughts regarding this game on the podcast, they go as follows: I feel like the tide is turning for DK. I get the feeling that they really want it (not that D-Boys don’t) but the players from DK haven’t tasted what D-Boys already have. That desire to win is flaming as an aroma around DK right now. The pressure falls on Rochdi Benabdelkader’s shoulders, as it should. He is the soul of this team and without a strong performance from Rochdi, this team has no chance. Matching Marco Masciotra’s play won’t be an easy task, but and an injured Marco might be easier for Rochdi to keep up with. If DK’s receivers play the way they did last week, I can see an upset happening here. Theo Ojeaha will have his say about the outcome of this game but I just don’t see him being able to cover everyone. Jordan McLaren, Jamal Gittens, Jamil Springer, Antonio Lanni and Theo. You read those names and you wonder how I can possibly think this defense can ever be beat. Well history has shown us that even the best sometimes fall. DK has already beat D-Boys once this year. No matter what, this is going to be a marvellous game!!

Key Players for D-Boys: Theo Ojeaha, Marco Masciotra, and all the J’s

Key Players for DK: Rochdi, Pilon’s, Patrick Chenard

DK 36 D-Boys34

Got-Skills VS Montreal’s Finest

When Got-Skills beat Montreal’s Finest earlier this season to send them on their first ever two game losing streak, I was floored. Kevin Wyeth threw two interceptions in that game. It’s the only game all year he threw two interceptions. Coincidence? I think not! Got-Skills has an extremely talented bunch of guys. Defensively they are one of the most experienced group. They’ve shown us all year that they can keep up with the best of the best, but my issue remains the same. I’ve said it all year and it was proven true again last week: Nicolas Centomo has yet to fire up all engines. Luckily for him, his defense held down the fort while he slept soundly in his bed. Against an experienced team like Finest in the playoffs, Nicolas can’t be caught snoozing. If he is, I guarantee you the doors to his castle will get kicked in. After one of their worst seasons ever, can Montreal’s Finest re-fire the booster? The answer is…yes.

Key Players for Finest: Kevin Wyeth, Mike Harrington, Kishon Thompson, Taylor bro’s

Key Players for Got-Skills: JC Mercille, Centomo’s, Samuel Drapeau

My prediction: Finest 38 – Got-Skills 40

FPF FanDuel:

I was able to wrap-up my come back against Nathan Taylor last week in overtime. Nate had a three game lead after six weeks of play, but a late season run made the final score 6-5 for me. I decided to continue with the Fantasy Football as an extra incentive for you guys to open up my article. This week we have Doug McKernan going up against Rehan Sarwar. If you didn’t notice, they picked their rosters on Facebook. We saw some questionable moves made by Sarwar but he pretends it was all part of a master plan. The winner will take on Nathan Taylor Wednesday night during the Division 1&2 semi-final games. I will be waiting at the finish line to take on the winner who can get through our FPF Fantasy Guru, Nate!
