The Thrilla of Flagzilla (Div 6)

There’s only two weeks left in the season and the playoff participants are pretty much set. Orange Crush and Venom have officially been eliminated. The Minge and The ‘Pack, lead the way in the A and B conferences respectively. The ‘Pack have two games in hand on the second place Run Levy Run who has only one game left, while the Minge are also two games up on the second place n.W.o. Let’s take a look at the Week 8 post-mortem in D6.

Maccabi 6, n.W.o. 24

Maccabi has been struggling since their 55 point win two weeks ago. During their last two games, they’ve only been able to score 13 points combined while giving up 70 points in the process. Quarterback Ofir Levy has not been able to keep the Midas touch that Sammy Feder had during his one-game appearance against Orange Crush. On the flip side, n.W.o have found some nice consistency with Michael Sanchez playing quite well. In week 8, he completed 20 of 26 passes for 3 touchdowns and 130 yards. I like this team as a sleeper with the way their defense can turn the ball over, as Stephen Tirelli recorded another interception. Offensively, Pietro Mignacca has scored five touchdowns in his last six games. Both teams will make the playoffs, but I am not impressed with Maccabi’s recent results. Unless they get more production from Levy or Emmanuel Cohen, who has cooled off over the last few seasons, it will be an early exit for Maccabi.

The Heismans 34, Orange Crush 12

The Gautama Swaminadhan show has continued, as he’s recorded another five-touchdown performance. It seems like every week I talk about him scoring throwing touchdowns left and right and this week was no different. He’s starting to get into Daniel Krebs’ territory in terms of elite play at quarterback. Let’s look at both from a statistical standpoint.

Swaminadhan: 70 for 93, 75% completion, 19 touchdowns, 0 interceptions 136 quarterback rating

Krebs: 86 for 147, 58.5 % completion, 33 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 109 quarterback rating

You have to keep in mind that Swaminadhan has only played in four games, where the Heismans have gone 3-1 in that period. Kevin Boustany is still providing great production, but Tomas Chylewski has been a nice contributor scoring touchdowns in four of his last five games with either four or six catches per game. The Heismans are a big-time dark horse because they can score with any team and they have a quarterback, finally, that can win you games if your defense falters. Speaking of the defense, they are playing solid as of late and have creeped up to fourth in total points allowed. The Orange Crush unfortunately are eliminated, but at least are continuing to stay motivated in their efforts. Ryan Palmer and Nick Gagne each had a passing touchdown in a losing effort. Gagne’s score was a short pass to Palmer who had a nice game statistically from a touchdowns standpoint.

‘The Pack 38, JeanGuy 26

I’ve been waiting for Christophe Chartrand to have a marquee game all season and he certainly delivered in what was a close contest against the undisputed best team in D6. JeanGuy has won some games despite some offence, but there is no doubt that unit was the reason they stayed close against Daniel Krebs and the Pack. Chartrand was able to match Daniel Krebs touchdown for touchdown (four each) and actually threw for more yards and had a better quarterback rating as he only missed the mark on three passes, compared to five by Krebs. Chartrand got contributions from little known players all season, as Fabien Moineau-Pilon and Jordan Demarbre each had their first touchdowns of the season.

Krebs and his seven carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns made the difference in this game. The inability of JeanGuy to contain him on third downs and in the redone was their undoing.  With games against Orange Crush (1-7) and Run Levy Run (7-2) remaining, ‘The Pack are well positioned towards going undefeated in the inaugural season of Division 6.

The Minge 40, Golden Girls 0

The Minge are starting to hit their stride and it showed after beating a very solid team in Golden Girls, who was 4-2 coming in this matchup, allowing only the third most points in D6.  Against the Minge though, nothing could get going. Jason Rossie could only complete 4 of 18 passes for -3 yards and three interceptions. Jason Kokolakis, their leading receiver, could not get open. On the other side, it’s business as usual for Matthew Young who recorded another four-touchdown game. The usual suspect in Henri Chelhot had a nice game with a touchdown and 50 yards receiving on four catches. Defensively, he pitched in a whopping five sacks, terrorizing Jason Rossie on a consistent basis.

Overall, there may not have been a more dominating performance against a relatively solid team in Golden Girls. This was their chance though to prove that they belong to be among the upper echelon teams, they failed, and now followers of the league must wonder how good are they? Their wins came against The Heismans (first game of the season, without Gautama Swaminadhan), JeanGuy (battled inconsistency all season), Orange Crush and Venom (a combined 1-15). They get the Heismans one more time in the season finale, with the chance to prove that they are a legitimate contender.

Still, credit to The Minge, whose defense has been absolutely smothering all season and may make them the most complete team in D6.

Run Levy Run 28, Venom 6

This was an easy victory for RLR with Venom struggling to get a victory. You almost hope that they get one. Like I had mentioned a few weeks ago, I know how it is like to play for a team that goes on a long losing streak and it can be draining on you. For my case, I have some good leaders in the group and we haven’t wavered on effort one iota. Venom, from what I’ve seen, has not either and in fact, they have done a much better job at staying in games.

RLR got an okay game from Jeff Rosenblatt with a paltry two touchdowns. He’s been averaging nearly four per game all season, so it is slightly alarming when he doesn’t produce the big number we’re accustomed to seeing. Defensively, Rob Bohbot and Yoni Lehrer each had an interception to seal the deal. It was another struggling performance for Rob Tessier as he completed 11 of 30 passes and gave up a pick-six to Lehrer.  Run Levy Run has a claim to be the second best team in D6, but I’ve been a little more impressed with the way The Minge have been blowing teams away as of late.

Players of the Week

Offense: Christophe Chartrand: The potential has been there and he finally had a great game. 18 for 21 with four touchdowns. Although in a losing effort, he gave The ‘Pack one of its biggest scares.

Defense: Henri Chelhot: Not only has he been the best receiver in D6, but also now he can add a five-sack performance to his belt.

Power Rankings

1. ‘The Pack: 7-0, still the best team in D6 with a high-powered offense.

2. The Minge: Second best defense and their offense is as dangerous as any in the division lately

3. Run Levy Run: Notice a trend? Best three teams have 3 of four best quarterbacks in D6.

4. n.W.o. Sanchez has been under the radar lately, but quietly having a nice campaign.

5. The Heismans: I keep waiting for Swaminadhan to have a bad game and he keeps getting better.

6. Golden Girls: Solid team, but a little overrated. Who have they beaten aside from a Heismans team without Swaminadhan.

7. JeanGuy: Chartrand starting to show some nice potential.

8. Maccabi: Very disappointing last two weeks defensively

9. Orange Crush: Boustany brothers faced off, but Elie from OC fell short.

10. Venom. Still winless, but are fighting hard every game

Playoff Picture

Here are the match ups if the playoffs started today

Conference A

1A. The Pack vs. 4A. Maccabi (Couldn’t see the Pack dropping this one. They are too much on a roll)

2A. Run Levy Run vs. 3A. The Heismans (Great quarterback matchup. Could be very high scoring)

Conference B

1B. The Minge vs. 4B. JeanGuy (The Minge have ramped it up offensively. Would be a tough matchup for JG)

2B. n.W.o. vs. 3B Golden Girls (I’m torn on this one, but I like n.W.o and what Sanchez has been doing lately)

That does it for this week. There are only two weeks left in the regular season, with playoff positioning still in play.
