The GM’s Scouting Report (Div 1&2)

Week 3/Super Bowl bye edition

Having sacrificed my readership for a week in order to include the D1 and D2 fantasy draft that took forever to do, I’ve basically ensured that since no articles are being posted this week, mine will be the only one seen. Since the Super Bowl came and went with no games during the week, I chose instead to make the focal point the upcoming games for the week as well as listing the results of the draft.

Beastmode Players of the Week

Division 2

QB – Marco Masciotra: 6 TDs to 4 different receivers and 0 interceptions are definitely the reason for his team’s winning success this week in an offensive shootout.

Receiver – Raphael Casey: He’s been a solid player in the lower divisions for a few seasons now, but it looks like spending time with the McGill boys is definitely giving Raphael an opportunity to shine. An absolutely destructive 4 TDs on 7 catches this week.

Defender – Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon: 2  tackles, a sack (on a normally untouchable Benny Goodfriend) and 2 INTs will definitely get the attention of scouting GMs.

Division 1

QB – Kevin Wyeth: It was only a matter of time until we saw his name up here. Going 18/19 with 7TDs and 0 INTs is an unheard of accomplishment, even for Kevin (the last time we saw these numbers, Kevin went 18/20 with 6TDs in the Winter 2009 D1 Finals)

Receiver – Pascal Tshilambo: Pascal seemed to be the go-to guy for Peterkin in a losing effort. However, Tshilambo put up some monster yardage and 2 TDs on the Finest’s defense.

Defender – Addley Dufour: Most players in D1 don’t even get 3 interceptions in a season. Addley did it in a game, and is by and large the reason that the Alkaholks were able to put up the win on Terror Squad this week.

The FPF Fantasy Draft

For something completely different (at least in Divisions 1 and 2) some of the media members decided to draft our own fantasy teams, but with FPF players instead of NFL players. The process was convoluted, disorganized and made us hate each other more as a group, but it’s going to make watching the remaining 7 games more exciting. Here are the rules concerning the draft:

Each team needs

 1 D1 QB,  1 D2 QB,  1 D1 WR,  1 D2 WR, 1 D1 Flex player,  1 D2 Flex player,  1 D1 Defence,  1 D2 Defence

A flex player is a player whom you will receive stats from on both offense and defense. You can’t pick two position players from the same team. A player who plays in both divisions (at the same position) is considered a D1 player. You can’t pick a player/defence from your own team.

I’ve marked each captain’s choices, along with when they went in the draft in brackets. The draft order was randomly selected, and the teams are follows:

I’m really excited to see just how this is going to play out. There is a plethora of talent in D1 and D2, and it goes without saying that there were a lot of obvious choices. However, there are a lot of unknowns and a lot of good players not drafted, so we’ll see whose risks will pay off and who will look dumb for postponing their picks to later rounds. We’re adopting a head-to-head format for each week, so expect a lot of competition between the media experts this season.

Weekly Predictions

I’m slowly starting to improve, having gone 4 for 6 in Division 2 and 3 for 4 in Division 1, bringing my season total thus far to 13/18 in Division 2 and 6/12 in Division 1 (yes I did that poorly the first two weeks.) Let’s see if I can attempt to get both over 75%

Division 2

Served With Ice vs. Top Gunnz: I see this being an interesting one. SWI are coming off of a close loss and are 0-3, while the 1-2 Top Gunnz are likely looking to vent some frustration after their crushing loss to the Road Runners. There’s a lot of speed and talent on both teams, so expect it to be an offensive shootout for sure. Prediction: N/A

Hustlers vs. Road Runners: I see something that intrigues me from the get-go. I’m expecting the matchup between Benny Goodfriend and Alexandre Gatien to be one for the ages. Benny has a history of getting rattled by rushers. Furthermore, he tends to favor the middle of the field (Pollice,) which Gatien blocks completely. Hustlers have the talent but have been underwhelming as of late. There have been lots of incompletions, and they don’t seem to be playing as a team yet. As such, I’m going to say “Beep Beep” with this one. Prediction: Road Runners

One Night Stands vs. Ice Up Son: Kevin Wyeth will be facing off against teammates Garrett and Nathan Taylor in what’ll be an incredibly entertaining game to watch. As good as the IUS team is (especially the defense) Scott Kelly is going to need to be PERFECT if they hope to have a winning game against the ONS juggernaut. I’m also intrigued as to who on IUS will be bestowed with the pleasure of covering Frank Bruno.  I know that the IUS defense is stifling and up to any challenge, but it’s tough to go against Kevin Wyeth. Prediction: One Night Stands

GoonzSquad vs. Team Padon: Two 0/3 teams facing off in what’s probably the basement brawl of the week. A team lacking an identity (3 different starting quarterbacks) faces off against a team that hasn’t generated any momentum. This isn’t a conference game, but it’s gotta be the most important game of the season for both teams. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that the loser of this game definitely won’t be making playoffs. It appears that UofM QB Gabriel Cousineau took the QB reins last week for Team Padon, and is the more likely QB from each side to lead towards victory. Prediction: Team Padon

Pantheres vs. Wolfpack: I’d say that this is a matchup of two of the most underrated teams in Division 2. Pantheres have impressed all season but have had a rough early season schedule. Wolfpack have the better record and seem to be having more plays going their way than in seasons past. Pantheres have the size and the organization, and have faced steeper competition. However, Wolfpack definitely bring more speed to the table, and I don’t think that Pantheres can keep up with them defensively. Unless this game is a slow one, I see Wolfpack running away with it. Prediction: Wolfpack

DK vs. D-Boys: The two powerhouses finally meet. You’ve got the best defenders in the division going head to head against the best receivers. All the potential to be game of the season for D2, this is a re-visiting of last year’s D3 quarterfinals that went into overtime, but with deeper rosters on both sides. This is going to get heated, and it’ll definitely be a possible prediction of things to come. Up until this week, I’ve been ranking DK as #2 and D-Boys as #1, and I don’t think that’ll change. Prediction: D-Boys

Wolverines vs. Bodyhype: Aside from a thrashing by the D-Boys in Week 2 (admittedly without their starting quarterback) Bodyhype have been performing incredibly for a first-year team. They’ve got some solid talent from McGill, and are exceling admirably. Meanwhile, one of the top FPF franchises in the Wolverines are struggling and desperately need a win. I’m thinking that the Wolverines have an ace in their sleeve in the receiving department, and we’ll see them chalk up their first win. Prediction: Wolverines

Division 1

Express vs. Maniax: The Maniax are up to the D1 standard, but have gone through three quarterbacks in as many weeks, which is a giant hit for both consistency and momentum. Express are struggling with the same record that the Maniax have, but have the advantage of having had their starter play all 3 games. While the athleticism of Maniax is on par (if not better) than Express, I think that the Express are organized enough to take this one. Prediction: Express

Alkaholiks vs. Gladiateurs: After having a snapper back on board last week, Lapierre and co. showed some of their preseason hype. Gladiateurs, meanwhile, seem to be lacking the chemistry that’s made them so successful in previous seasons. They’ve made the proper pickups to keep them D1 competitive, but just aren’t clicking yet. However, I think that the Glads still have some fight left in them, and might just rattle the Alks’ cage this week. Prediction: Gladiateurs

Montreal’s Finest vs. Flag Moi L’Sac: Oh lord. Can I just say that I really have no idea how this is going to go? Both teams are on fire. Montreal’s Finest are the best but admittedly do poorly after the bye week. Flag Moi L’Sac have a ton of speed and skill but have yet to take on or play the juggernaut that is the Finest. Fortune favors the bold and I’m probably going to regret this one, but I’m going to go with FMS with the upset. Prediction: Flag Moi L’Sac

Terror Squad vs. Rainmakers: I have to say that I’m impressed with this Rainmakers squad. It’s their deepest squad to date, and I’m thinking that they’ve definitely gotten it right this season. Terror Squad have been playing solid since the move up, but their only win is still to a team without their starting QB. The Rainmakers D is stout, and definitely have the weapons to neutralize the Terror Squad attack. Prediction: Rainmakers
