Takeaways from the second week of games!

Two weeks are in the books!

Thus far, the inaugural FPF Jr season has been all about chemistry. Certain teams were put together pairing friends and tackle football teammates- and through the first couple of weeks, we can see that the Hurricanes- in the Sophomore division- and the Tigers in the Freshman, are using their cohesion to their advantage.

The league’s main objective this season is to find parity and ensure that every game can be competitive and won by either side. As we saw in week 2, just one week of chemistry building can go a long way; just take a look at Bard Evans’ Crimson Tide. In week 1, it was clear that despite a very talented Hurricanes team lining up in front of them, the defensive cohesion was not there. Offensively, Tide QB Avery was forcing some deep throws and holding onto the ball a little longer than he would have liked. Brad was able to iron out some of those kinks and lead his squad to a huge week 2 win over the Longhorns.

Key take aways from CRIMSON TIDE vs LONGHORNS

1)      DEEP PASSES: Longhorns QB Conor has shown throughout tryouts and his week 1 game that he has a great combination of a strong arm and great speed. Being only six players and having to play both ways, the Longhorns’ QB did not have a chance to slow things down and have an in-game chat with coach Dave Allen. The first thing Dave would have advised him: don’t be afraid to take the check down pass. All QB’s have a tendency to want to show off the deep ball, but when you realize you have four cracks to gain only 15 yards to gain midfield (starting at the 10-yard line) it only takes a few short completions to set you up in opponents’ territory. That said, Conor did a great job improving that in the second half.

2)      REECE ALERT! Crimson Tide standout Reece Woods had himself one heck of a game, intercepting not one, not two, not three, but FOUR passes, including a pick-six! Throw in a 100-yard receving game and one could say it was a good day at the office!

3)      DEFLAGGING: anyone who has played flag at any level will tell you it’s an art. Let’s just say it’s a lot harder than it looks to pull the flagbelt off a player running and juking full-speed ahead. In the first two weeks of action, we’ve seen many players clench their fist to grab the flag and end up with a whole lot of nothing- but not Josh of the Longhorns! He ended the game witt seven tackles and we don’t remember seeing him fan even once! Nice job.

Key take aways from TIGERS vs WOLVERINES

1)      QB MUSICAL CHAIRS: Wolverines Assistant coach Jacques Void was in relief duty this weekend with Head Coach Kevin Wyeth out of town. Jacques did his best to give several players an opportunity to play QB while trying to find his go-to guy. What resulted unfortunately was a lack of rhythm on offence and a really messy scoresheet! (Scorekeeper Brent Bodkin found a way to make it work!)

2)      LSU TIGER-LIKE D! How about them Tigers? Off to a 2-0 start, their defence looks like a seasoned group, creating turnovers and batting down balls. DB’s Kaiden Dewey and Olivier Parent-Lefreniere were all over the field and both ended the game with an INT. Nice job!

3)      CAN ANYONE DEFLAG TERRENCE BROWN? Tigers’ Terrence already has four rushing TD’s through two weeks. Great speed and even better moves make him look like a 2004-Mike Vick (for those old enough to remember!), not a flag football player. Keep it up!

This weekend is the last set of games before our two-week holiday break! Good luck to the four teams in action.

BUCKEYES vs WOLVERINES

LONGHORNS vs HURRICANES

See you next time!
