Season Previews and Predictions for Co-ed and Women’s Divisions

The Winter 2020 co-ed season is about to kick off. I am thrilled to see 18 teams registered in the co-ed divisions. There are also six teams signed up to take part in FPF’s first ever women’s division. I will be covering the weekly happenings of co-ed and the women’s league in my articles. In past seasons, I did my best to discuss every team on a weekly basis. This season, since I will be reporting on 24 teams, I will not be able to report on each team every week but be patient and eventually you and your team will be covered in my articles. If there is ever an issue with my articles or if you have feedback, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected]. If you rather talk to me in person, I play in co-ed for Kiss My End Zone and will be scorekeeping all of the women’s leagues games. With that, let’s jump right into my season predictions for co-ed 1, co-ed 2 and the women’s league.

Co-ed 1 Season Preview:

Power Rangers: After sitting out the spring season, the winter 2019 champions are back and they once again have their sights set on the championship. They have the same superstars that helped them win their last championship. Tam Vilaydeth is one of the best quarterbacks in the division and Serge Pilon is probably the best player in co-ed. With such a solid core, I see no reason that Power Rangers should not be considered the favorites to win it all.

Predicted Record: 7-1

Michael Scott’s Tots: Michael Scott’s Tots, perennial contenders in co-ed 2, have made the jump up to co-ed 1. The absence of the injured Kenny Boutilier will surely be felt, especially in the higher division. However, MST have recruited fresh faces to the team in the form of Kevin Donnet and Andel Thomas-Gordon. It is impossible to replace the leadership that Boutilier brought to the team but MST hopes that their new additions will be able to replace Boutilier’s on-field production.

Predicted Record: 2-6

Party Mix: In a division filled with athleticism and speed, this team of wily veterans has established themselves as contenders. While they might not beat you with a 40-yard touchdown pass, you can bet that they will slowly march down the field. They don’t make mistakes on offence and their defence prides itself on not allowing big plays. Combine those two skills and you get a championship level team.

Predicted Record: 5-3

3 Hunnas: It is hard to discuss a team that I know nothing about. Only a few of the players on this team have ever played in FPF before. While I cannot speak to the talent of this team, I know that teams new to co-ed tend to struggle. No matter the talent, there is a steep learning curve.

Predicted Record: 2-6

Speed Academy: Speed Academy is another team that is new to co-ed. While they are new, this roster has quite a bit of FPF experience. Most importantly, they have a proven quarterback in Emile Plante. I expect this team to take a few weeks to adapt to the particularities of co-ed. After those early struggles, their talent will shine through and they should finish strong.

Predicted Record: 3-5

3rd Down for What: 3rd Down for What is back, and they must be thinking that this is the season they win it all. They lost by a single point in the spring finals and suffered their only loss of the winter 2019 season in the finals. After coming painstakingly close, Sara Parker and company have one objective this season: to win it all. They have all the talent you could hope for and four seasons of experience under their belts. Will they finally live up to their potential?

Predicted Record: 6-2

Midtown: The spring 2019 champions are back and ready to defend their title. However, that will not be an easy task. This co-ed 1 division is packed with much more talent than last year’s. While Midtown’s season’s worth of experience will help, they will need to solve their quarterback issue if they want to succeed. Last year, they had a rotation of Jean-Christophe Morin-Phaneuf and Phillip Enchil at quarterback. This season, they need consistency at that position. If they can find that consistency, they might very well repeat as champions.

Predicted Record: 5-3

Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce: Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce have one of the best quarterbacks in the division in JF Marquis. However, it feels like this team is only in co-ed 1 because Marquis isn’t allowed to throw in co-ed 2. They do not have a marquee superstar like the other heavyweights in this division. While they will definitely be competitive, they are missing at least one elite player to be considered contenders.

Predicted Record: 2-6

Co-ed 2 Season Preview:

Rhinos: I am really not too sure what I am supposed to say about Rhinos. Their entire roster is new to FPF. Not a single player has played before. The only thing I can confirm is their glaring lack of experience. However much confidence this team enters with, I expect it to be rocked by a series of early losses. If they learn from those loses, they should be able to turn things around in the second half of the season.

Predicted Record: 2-6

Tigers: Tigers are returning to co-ed after a rough first season. In the winter 2019 season, Tigers were known as the nicest team in the division. I fully expect them to uphold that reputation, however what this team really wants  is a win. I predict their first and only win of the season coming in week 2.

Predicted Record: 1-7

Js: While Js may be new to co-ed, I expect this team to make its presence felt immediately. They have the division’s best quarterback in Hai Minh Luong and they also have a top receiving threat in Adrien Dusautois. The only question about this team is how quickly they will adapt to co-ed.

Predicted Record: 5-3

ATH Squad: ATH Squad is making its return to co-ed and this time they have a new quarterback. Fresh out of FPF Junior, I expect Noah Lachance to take the reigns of this offence. Don’t let Lachance’s age fool you, he has been playing in FPF longer than most quarterbacks in the division. He is surrounded by a talented group of receivers and I expect this team to be the highest scoring in the division. If their defence can manage just a few stops a game, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

Predicted Record: 5-3

A-Town: A-Town are also making their return to co-ed after taking the spring season off. This promising young team has added the electric Sebastien Lopez Oieni to their ranks. With this addition, A-Town has all the weapons they need to contend. However, their issue last season was turning the ball over. If quarterback Emmanuelle Bronsard can find a way to protect the football, A-Town could be the surprise of the season.

Predicted Record: 3-5

Dream Crushers: This is another team that I know very little about. Unlike other new teams, Dream Crushers have a co-ed veteran in Constance Millaire. While I have no idea how talented this group is, I am sure Millaire will make sure her team understands how to win in co-ed.

Predicted Record: 4-4

Kiss My Endzone: My least favorite team to analyze is always my own team. Like any good captain, I think my team has a chance to win it all. However, I was equally confident last season when my team was knocked out in the semi-finals. Ultimately, all I can say is that Kiss My End Zone is a talented squad. If their defence can improve, I see no reason as to why they cannot not win it all.

Predicted Record: 5-3

La Secte: Huh, yet another new team. By now, I am sure you are all tired of my writing about how new teams lack experience. I will keep this short and sweet: I don’t know.

Predicted Record: 3-5

It’s a Match: After losing in the finals of the winter 2019 season, It’s a Match are back to win it all. However, their quest for revenge will have to be with a different quarterback. Benoit Lawlor cannot throw in co-ed 2 so either Alexis Labonté or François Éthier will have to fill his shoes, and those are quite some shoes to fill. If It’s a Match can truly replace Lawlor, they are my favorites to win it all.

Predicted Record: 6-2

Yin & Yang: Ying & Yang’s roster looks too good to be true. It looks too good to be true because it is. If they play with their full roster, they would bust the cap and lose by forfeit. The question is, which of the talented players on Y&Y’s roster will not be playing with them? Regardless of who they have to cut, this team will be fearsome. Keiya Allen-Beckles might be the fastest player in the division and Justin Weir is by far the most elusive quarterback. I think the only way to stop this team is with a good rusher. If you can keep Weir in the pocket and force him to rely on his arm, you might just be able to pick him off enough times to win.

Predicted Record: 6-2

Women’s Division Season Preview:

Spartiates: Spartiates do not have a roster entered onto the FPF website. While I would love to venture a guess about this team’s skill and experience, I really have no information.

Predicted Record: n/a

Fleur de Lys: While most teams in this division are filled with new players, Fleur de Lys is composed entirely of FPF veterans. It is hard to bet against experience and this team is definitely the most experienced in the division. They have a proven all-star quarterback in Vanessa Birri and a cast of talented receivers for her to throw the ball to. Stopping this team will be no easy feat.

Predicted Record: 6-2

District: This team looks nearly as talented as Fleur de Lys. They have two superstars in Keiya Allen-Beckles and Constance Millaire. My only question surrounding this team is who will play quarterback? QB is by far the most important position in FPF and without a talented passer to feed them the ball, even talents like Millaire and Allen-Beckles will struggle.

Predicted Record: 4-4

The Rookies: As the name suggests, The Rookies are an entirely new team. While I am sure this is a talented group, there are other teams in this division with equal or superior talent and tons more experience.

Predicted Record: 1-7

Ahuntsic Girls: If I were to venture a guess, I would say that the Ahuntsic girls are the flag football team from CEGEP Ahuntsic. Rocket science, I know. What I don’t know is how this team will stack up against the experienced teams in this division. While they will clearly be familiar with playing together, they have very limited experience in FPF.

Predicted Record: 3-5

Team Texas: If there is any team in this division that can rival Fleur de Lys it is definitely Team Texas.  For starters, I have learnt to never bet against Sara Parker. She will make all of her receivers better. That is a scary prospect because there are already some very talented receivers on this team like Emma Racine. The thought of Parker and Racine playing together every week should terrify any opposing defence.

Predicted Record: 6-2

There you have my predictions for co-ed 1, co-ed 2 and the women’s division. Co-ed is just a few days away from kicking off and I for one, am very excited. The women’s division will need to wait until January 20th to get started.
