Reviews and Previews from 2nd Week of FPF Action

After the first two weeks, some teams will need to reevaluate their expectations for the season. I know a lot of you came into this season aiming to win the cash bracket and nothing else, but there is no dishonor in realizing that cash bracket might already be out of reach. The cool part of the fall season is that teams are re-seeded halfway through so even if you have gotten off to a rougher start, you could be looking at a more manageable second half to the season.

With week 3 just hours away, teams are starting to realize where they actually rank in their division and what their postseason hopes should be.

Week 2 Reviews:

Tier 2: Bruins (19) vs Trojans (18)

Mes attentes pour les Trojans en tier 2 étaient très basses. Même s’ils sont une équipe athlétique avec beaucoup de potentiel, il leur manque de l’expérience. Leur attaque dépend des courses

de leur quart-arrière. Cependant, dès qu’ils font face à un rusher dominant, leur attaque a de la misère.  Les Trojans ont dominé en division 6 lors de la saison d’hiver, mais ils ont prise la décision de monter en tier 2. Malgré que le cap de cette équipe est assez bas avec quelques modifications à leur effective, je suis quand même convaincu qu’ils auraient pu rentrer en tier 3 et dominer.

Pourtant, les Trojans m’ont impressionné avec leur performance contre les Bruins en semaine 2. Leur attaque a eu de la difficulté contre la défensive expérimentée des Bruins, mais leur jeu en défense m’a surpris. Ils ont limité François Martin, un des quart-arrières les plus talentueux de la division, à seulement trois touchés. De plus, Jonathan Benoit a intercepté Martin à deux reprises pour garder ce match à la portée des Trojans.

Même si les Bruins ont réussi à se sauver avec une victoire, ils ne doivent pas être satisfaits de

leur performance. Avec une vedette comme Zach Swirm et des joueurs expérimentés comme Alexis Labonté et Gabriel Wiseman, ils devraient démolir une équipe comme les Trojans.

La bonne nouvelle, c’est que malgré leurs difficultés, ils ont gagné. À leur deuxième match de la soirée contre HotSauce Sports,les Bruins se sont échappés avec une mince avance de trois

points. Ils ont une fiche impressionnante de 2-0, mais ceux-ci ont eux de la misère à battre des adversaires de moindre qualité. Ils vont devoir monter leur jeu à un autre niveau s’ils espèrent battre Half-a-Stars cette semaine.

Tier 3: Les Nains Johanais (30) vs Bud Knights (21)

Avant ce match, je doutais si Les Nains Johanais pouvaient se qualifier pour les séries et je considère Bud Knights comme un des favoris pour remporter le tier 3. Les Nains Johanais ont clairement écouté mes conseils de la semaine passée et ils ont joué presque la totalité du match avec un seul quart-arrière, Alec Richard-Nantel. Malgré le fait que ce dernier a seulement complété neuf passes, il a quand même enregistré trois touchés. De plus, il a seulement lancé une interception tandis que les Bud Knights ont lancé trois. L’attaque des Nains Johanais a contribué juste assez pour leur victoire, mais c’est leur défense qui les a fait gagner. Malgré le fait qu’ils ont accordé 230 verges par la passe, ils ont limité leurs adversaires à trois touchés. Xavier Bourgeois- Giroux a mené cette défensive avec deux interceptions dont une qu’il a ramené pour un toucher.

Je connais les Bud Knights et Marc-André Desaulniers très bien. C’est une équipe qui va avoir beaucoup de misère contre les adversaires athlétiques qui jouent une couverture homme à homme étanche. Je suis prêt à parier que Les Nains Johanais ont joué majoritairement de man to man. Même si les receveurs des Knights ont réussi à créer de la séparation, Desaulniers ne réussissait pas à compléter la passe. D’ailleurs, je crois que la nouvelle règle empêchant les équipes de s’approcher plus près de la ligne de cinq verges désavantage Desaulniers beaucoup plus que d’autres quart-arrières. Le playbook de Desaulniers est conçu pour avancer la balle à la ligne d’une ou deux verges et ensuite compter avec un slant ou un out sur le goal line. Maintenant, ces jeux ne sont plus disponibles à Gronk. Il va devoir repenser ses jeux pour pouvoir scorer avec ce nouveau règlement. 

Tier 2: Voodoo (19) vs Outlaws (26)

Two remarkably similar quarterbacks went head to head in this one. Frank Kaye and Stephen Harripersaud are both methodical passers who will slowly march the ball down the field. They also both scramble in the pocket to create time and space for their receivers. I’d have to say that Harripersaud is simply a slightly more dangerous version of Kaye. Harripersaud gets the ball out of his hands so quickly it is nearly impossible to defend. That advantage at the quarterback position was reflected in the final score. Harripersaud’s Outlaws beat Voodoo 26-19.

This was a great first win of the season for the Outlaws. This is exactly how they have to win games. They attempted 21 passes and slowed the game down on offence while on defence they created a few turnover on downs. While that simple formula of slowing down the game and one or two defensive stands might work against a team like Voodoo, I do not think it will work against some of the dynamic teams. Outlaws don’t have a dynamic playmaker who can score that 40 yard touchdown and I don’t think their defence has the athletes to cover some of the shiftier and quicker teams. As long as the Outlaws are playing teams who approach the game like they do, I think they will succeed. However, when they go up against some of the younger uber athletic teams who love the deep ball, I think they will struggle.

Week 3 Previews:

Tier 1: KGP (2-0) vs Khansequence (2-0)

This is definitely going to be the game of the week in tier 1. Both of these teams boast undefeated records and have been looking great throughout the first quarter of the season. While their records may seem evenly matched, the quarterback duel leans in the favor of Khansequence. Daniel Lazzara has made his much anticipated FPF return and has been looking fantastic so far. I also love Isiah Allard rushing for Khansequence. I think he matches up great against the slightly shorter Phil Cutler. Allard has batted down 4 passes this season and I think this might be the game where instead of batting a pass down as the rusher, he picks one off.

Prediction: Khansequence

Tier 2: EZW (2-0) vs Les Gros Coqs (1-1)

Ces deux équipes savent comment compter des points. Jusqu’à présent, EZW n’a même pas dû compter sur leur défense pour gagner des matchs. Quand tu peux marquer des points à volonté contre de la compétition inférieure, la défensive n’est pas essentielle. Par contre, cette semaine, ils affrontent Les Gros Coqs qui ont une offensive aussi redoutable que la leur. En plus d’avoir

une attaque impressionnante, Les Gros Coqs savent aussi jouer en défensive. Je prévois un match à haut pointage, mais je crois que la défensive des Coqs va réussir un arrêt de plus que celui de EZW.

Prediction: Les Gros Coqs

Tier 3: TuneSquad (2-0) vs Mean Girls (2-0)

We all knew that Mean Girls were going to be a force to be reckoned with coming into this season. On the other hand, TuneSquad has taken a lot of people by surprise. No one knew how good this group of FPF Junior veterans were. Mean Girls love the deep ball and I think that plays into TuneSquad’s hands. They have a lightning quick rusher in Jonathan Lebensvtajn-Sharabani and a great deep safety in Charles Presser. I think the combination of the two will force a lot of high ballooning throws out of Mean Girls which Presser will pick off

Prediction: TuneSquad

Coed: Fightin’ Tigers (2-0) vs Semi-Croquants (1-1)

Fightin’ Tigers have a lot of name recognition. They have FPF veterans like Seth Galina and Dylan Taylor. Semi-Croquants one the other hand, don’t boast any of those big names. In fact, I think the biggest issue with this team is continuity. They cannot field the same roster week and after week and that definitely affects the chemistry of a team. From what I have seen of Semi-Croquants, I think they are an extremely talented group but until I know which roster will be showing up week in and week out, I cannot pick them to beat an established team like the Fightin’ Tigers.

Prediction: Fightin’ Tigers

Week 2 Team of the Week:

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive on and vice versa. When choosing the players for the team of the week, I do not consider the tier that the players are in. I only consider their achievements.

Receiver: Anthony Lapointe (Urgence Medic, tier 1) 8 receptions, 110 receiving yards, 2 TDs
