Rehan’s Report (D1) – Week 4

After no football for two weeks, because of the Super Bowl, many division 1 players were anxious to return to action especially the two time defending champions, Hurricanes. They had lost their first game of the year to Rainmakers in week 3 and would play the Demons who hadn’t lost a game this season. Also, Wolverines and Express faced each other and both teams were searching for their first win while Rainmakers looked to continue their hot streak against CLR Forces. Last, Patrick Chenard would face the team who he took to the finals in the winter 2008 season. A lot of interesting match ups would take place in week 4 so let’s take a look at the full recap of the week that was.

Week 4 Review

I’ll start with the winless teams, Wolverines and Express. Jerry Charles missed Wolverines week 3 game so they were happy to have him back. He put up decent numbers against Express by throwing for 101 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT, a lot better than his counter part, Patrick Chenard, who threw for 144 yards, 3 TDs and 4 INTs. Although the game was close and Wolverines won by a score of 19-18, the key was the 4 interceptions thrown by Patrick Chenard. For the most part, the Express defense kept themselves in the game despite the offensive turnovers; they had 10 PDs, 1 interception and 1 sack however offense just couldn’t capitalize. On the other hand, the Wolverines defense, that has been their bread and butter, came up with 4 interceptions and Jerry Charles got the job done on offense. Wolverines now have their first win and hope to gain some momentum from this as they face the Rainmakers next week. Express are still winless but are coming oh so close to that first win and they will be on a bye in week 5.

Moving on to the second game for Patrick Chenard last weekend, this one against the Montreal’s Finest, the team he played with in winter 2008. You would think that throwing 4 interceptions against the Wolverines was bad and Mr. Chenard would learn from that and have a better outing. Well, he outdid himself because he threw for 5 interceptions against the Finest while only throwing for 1 touchdown and the convert was no good. Montreal’s Finest won the game 30-6. I mentioned that the Express defense helped Patrick Chenard with a lot of bat downs against the Wolverines however they couldn’t duplicate that effort because the caliber of the Montreal’s Finest offense is much better. Kevin Wyeth completed 21 out of 30 passes for 224 yards and 4 TDs with only 1 INT. As he has done all season, he spread the ball well and every receiver had catches. I cannot stress enough how important it is to spread the ball because it makes it hard for the opposing team to defend. The Finest defense also came up big because not only did they intercept Patrick Chenard 5 times but they also only limited him to 7 completions but more important, 9 rushing yards. The Montreal’s Finest are now first over with a 4-0 record and have allowed the least amount of points in 63. Yet the Finest squad knows their next two games are their hardest; they play Hurricanes next week and the Demons in week 6, a true test of their ability.

Next we look at the Rainmakers who had an incredible upset win against the Hurricanes two weeks ago. However the CLR Forces had their first win in week 3 and were looking to win two in a row. A lot of people thought that Rainmakers would win outright but also it wouldn’t be a close game but the critics were all proven wrong. It was an intense and exciting game to watch. Fred Dupuis was a man on a mission and although only completed 50 percent of his passes, he threw for 191 yards and 5 TDs but more important, no INTs. Mr. Dupuis’ receivers responded to him and caught balls at key occasions and 4 receivers had at least 1 TD each. The CLR Forces’ defense came up big also as they sacked Ryan Kastner three times and picked him off twice, that being the difference in the game. It boggles the mind how the Rainmakers won a huge game two weeks ago and yet lost last week. However credit must be given where it is due, the CLR Forces wanted this game more and to regain the status they once had in division 1. CLR Forces are now 2-2 and 4th overall. They are getting hot at the right time and will take on the Demons next week, who beat them in week 1. Perhaps CLR can kill two birds with one stone; win three in a row and get revenge for week 1. Rainmakers are now 2-3 and ranked 5th, they will take on Wolverines who are now in the win column but Rainmakers learned the hard way in week 4 that they can’t underestimate any team in division 1.

The last game is the show stopper, the main event and the FPF game of the week. Before the game started, you heard the buzz around the field, players from every division talking about watching this game. It was filmed and can be viewed on the FPF website. The Hurricanes won the game 46-43, a high scoring affair that was well anticipated by everyone. This was a back and forth game with a few stops in between. The Demons were up on the Hurricanes at the half but the key moment came when a pass from Carmine Pollice was thrown to Paul Lapierre and he was pushed from behind therefore losing the ball which was intercepted by the Hurricanes’ Kyle Smith. The Demons were furious because they felt Hurricanes should have been penalized and plus had Paul Lapierre had the opportunity to hold on to the ball, it would have been a TD as the incident occurred in the end zone. Yet the Demons stayed resilient and stopped the Hurricanes on the ensuing drive getting back the ball, regaining the momentum. Demon’s first pass went to Mike Harrington on a deep ball which he dropped and the second pass was intercepted by Kyle Smith once again. That was all the Hurricanes would need to put this game on ice because they scored and never looked back. Carmine Pollice, although throwing for 2 interceptions, had a good air game throwing for 267 yards and 4 TDs and a great ground game as he rushed for 33 yards and 3 TDs. The drop balls and missed opportunities haunted the Demons. Plus the Demons defense allowed a few easy TDs on long passes from Rick Nincheri, something they know they have to work on. On the flipside Hurricanes are happy they bounced back from the loss two weeks ago and will get another tough challenge next week in Montreal’s Finest.

And that rounds up this week’s review and it is now time to name the 3 STARwars of the week.

3rd star:  Fred Dupuis (CLR Forces) gets a star for a second time in as many weeks, 15-30 for 191 yards, 5 TDs and leading his team to two wins in a row.

2nd star: Louis Larouche (Hurricanes) had a great day torching the demons secondary, 4 receptions for 97 yards and 3 TDs.

1st star: Rick Nincheri (Hurricanes) played a mistake free game and put up excellent numbers, 17-24 for 290 yards and 7 TDs.

Sarwar’s Spread:

Last week I went 1-3 and it is getting that much tougher to allocate the spreads now due to so many teams winning when it seemed like they wouldn’t pull it off. If I was in Vegas, OK I know that would never happen however point being, division 1 teams are highly unpredictable.

1. Rainmakers (2-3) vs. Wolverines (1-3): Rainmakers know this is a game they could win if they stick to their guns and don’t underestimate their opponents. They have to play with the same intensity as the Hurricanes game. Wolverines don’t have the offensive firepower to keep up with the Rainmakers so their defense will be the key. Rainmakers – 7.5

2. Hurricanes (3-1) vs. Montreal’s Finest (4-0): The Finest have the best defense in division 1 and that will be put to the test against a potent Hurricanes offense. The key will be the rushers as both QBs are on fire right now. The Finest want revenge as they lost to Hurricanes two years in a row in the finals and now have the best squad ever seen in its history however I question if their defense can withstand the firepower of the Hurricanes’ offense. Hurricanes – 5.5

3. CLR Forces (2-2) vs. Demons (3-1): Demons beat them in Week 1 however CLR are a different team now, winning their last 2 contests. Demons should win this game but it will be very close. Demons – 7.5
