As the season fades, the playoff hunt begins

As one season ends, another begins in the form of the post-season. And this one is for all the marbles. The way teams play in March usually translates into how they will fare, granted they make it into the post-season during the winter season. It’s all about riding that momentum wave before it comes crashing down.

As of now, here are the 12 teams to make the playoffs in Conference A

  1. Golden Flashes
  2. Cougars
  3. Maximum Carnage
  4. Sphinx
  5. Old Guns
  6. Les Refs
  7. KGP Lite
  8. TDs and Beer
  9. J’s
  10. The U
  11. Blackshirts
  12. Sticky Hands

As of now, here are the standings in Conference B

  1. The Gryphons
  2. Gators
  3. Dope Boys
  4. GG’WP’
  5. Les Verges Folles
  6. DG Goons
  7. Goats
  8. Speed Demons
  9. Green Lantern Corps
  10. We Dem Boys
  11. Tomahawk Nightmare
  12. Keyport Lock

On the opposite side of the spectrum, here are those, who are mathematically eliminated from the playoff contention and headed back to the shores all washed up. V Nation, Les Loups, Mad Bears, Tyrants, Butterfingers, Venom, Killuminati and Road Warriors.

Now I don’t do what I used to, but do things I never did Still got my values, but switched up my etiquette This industry don’t come with benefits That’s why I’m saving for a rainy day and trying to stay ahead of it Cheese don’t concern me, but I’m caught up in this mouse trap

This week’s agenda is as followed:

Playoff Dates, Schedules & Additional info 4 Takeaways By the NUMBERS Week 10 predictions

Playoff dates, Schedules & Additional info

The playoff schedule for all six divisions have been posted on the FPF site. You can find it by clicking on the schedule link and by switching from regular season to playoffs featured on the top left corner of the page. Please note that all dates are confirmed and that games cannot be moved.

Once again, here is a clear breakdown of the number of teams to qualify for the playoffs in division 5. Top 12 teams per conference [top four seeds per conference receive a bye].

Tiebreaks

2-way tie: 1) wins, 2) head-to-head, 3) divisional record, 4) points allowed 5) point differential

3-way tie: 1) wins, 2) divisional record, 3) points allowed 4) point differential

A reminder that a player must be present for a minimum of six games to be considered playoff eligible.

Four Takeaways

Last week I briefly spoke about teams being blanked at least once this season. I also asked the question “who’s the next team to be featured on this list?” The Tyrants and Killuminati generously came forth and answered that question. Now we have seen several shutouts this season. Killuminati have been twice, while the Sphinx, V Nation, Les Loups, Venom and most recently the Tyrants have all suffered that fate once. Do I dare ask the same question?

Every week we see an upset. That seems to be the trend as of late. This week was no exception. So what happened? Nothing aside from the fact that Jagerbomb put up 31 points against a stingy defence in the Sphinx as they captured their 3rd win of the season. Simon Duchesne was on fire and the Sphinx had no answer for him. No game is guaranteed.

It took eight games, but it finally happened. The Road Warriors are the newest member to join the club, after securing their first win of the season. QB Mike Bagnato tossed 7 TDs as his club put up a season-high 46 points against Hot Boys Hotline. Only two teams are still searching for their first season to avoid a winless season. They are Venom and the Butterfingers.

While we are on the subject, the Butterfingers continue to play musical chair at the quarterback position. The reality is that they may need to look at another QB. Jonathan Still is just the latest pivot to try and capture that elusive victory for the Butterfingers, but to no avail. I hope that they can remain competitive to end the season, but truth be told, this team would be better suited for division 6.

By the NUMBERS

Here’s a numerical breakdown of events that transpired last week and what’s to come

2: more weeks until the post-season. Hope you all enjoyed the warm-ups. It’s about to get real.

60: points tallied by the DG Goons as QB Christopher Pendenza tossed 7 majors. The defence chipped in with two interceptions—both returned to the house. 60 points…are you kidding me? #Savage.

15: teams that scored between 30-39 points in week 10. A lot of you were keeping the scorekeepers busy. Interesting to note that 3 of those teams did end up losing their game. Despite putting up 30+ points it simply wasn’t enough for the Rednecks, The Pack and Hot Boys Hotline.

4: interceptions amassed by Kevin Boustany of Maximum Carnage last week, bringing his total to 10 on the year.

6: number of TD grabs hauled in last week by Matthew Rankin of the Road Warriors. Talk about a monster outing. Either that or I guess no one wanted to cover him.

4: players that reached the century mark in receiving yards. Daniel Goloff from Keyport Lock (110), Matthew Rankin from Road Warriors (117), Patrice Lindor from Golden Flashes (115), Jeremy Anderson from TOPSZN (149)

Week 10 PREDICTIONS

Fans of the Cougars vs Saint-Lucs

Having lost 3 games in a row, I believe the team formerly known as Los Pollos Hermanos will end the skid and get a much needed win. Saint-Lucs held their own against solid teams in Dope Boys and in Keyport Lock.

DG Goons vs Sticky Hands

Putting up 60 points in your last game, is simply incredible. Talk about showing no mercy and making a statement. In fact, DG Goons have scored 100 points in the past two weeks. Not much more to be said. How do you compete with that? Good luck Sticky Hands. Make sure you score on every drive.

KGP Lite vs Rednecks

Not going to lie, KGP Lite have surprised me as of late. Having yielded a mere seven points in their last two outings, that will certainly help them in their playoff run as points allowed can be the difference maker. Although the Rednecks have shown that they can compete with just about anybody, the experience factor will pay dividend for KGP.

Mad Bears vs The U

Here are two teams going in completely different directions. The U have won 4 straight games after a slow start the season. With won win in their back pocket, Mad Bears have been under achieving all year long. It won’t get better for the Mad Bears…not anytime soon.

The Gryphons vs GG’WP’

As good as GG’WP’ are, The Gryphons are better. Kevin Paul won’t let Simon Bosquet Beaudoin run wild and will make him one dimensional, which plays in favour of The Gryphons and their stifling defensive unit. I can see The Gryphons going undefeated this season, so GG’WP’s six-game win streak will come to an end on Saturday.

Gators vs Hot Boys Hotline

The Gators will end their regular season on a high note edging out Hot Boys Hotline. Too much firepower on the offensive side of the ball to be slowed down in this one. Just a stepping stone or the Gators on their way into the post-season.

Les Refs vs Les Loups

Currently enjoying an impressive 3-game win streak, Les Refs will keep their winning ways going into their week 10 matchup. This is a team that could have been sitting on a 6-1-1 record, but hey, 5-2-1 is not bad either. They are fun to watch and are entertaining to say the least. They can win their last two games of the season.

Cougars vs Old Guns

The Cougars have come close to losing games, but somehow found a way to remain undefeated. Unfortunately, they will lose that prestige, as well as the game pitting them against the Old Guns. I believe that the Old Guns got a wakeup call losing to Killuminati and the timing couldn’t been more perfect. They will be more focus and ready as we near the post-season.

Speed Demons vs Jagerbomb

What can I say about this one that may do it some justice? Two teams coming off huge victories. Jagerbomb upsetting the Sphinx in the red corner and we have the Speed Demons downing Tomahawk Nightmare in the blue. I will have to go with the Speed Demons in this one. They are on a roll and seemed poised to finish the season strong. I wish the boys in red best of luck moving forward.

Keyport Lock vs Blackshirts

It seems that Keyport Lock win games in which they are not favored and lose the ones which they shouldn’t. Very unpredictable. I am simply not confident enough to say that they will win. On the flip side, the Blackshirts have handed the Golden Flashes their only loss thus far. They earned their second shutout of the season last week in a 37-0 thrashing over Killuminati. I think they can pull this one off.

Tomahawk Nightmare vs Dope Boys

The wheels have completely fell off for Tomahawk Nightmare with four consecutive losses. Safe to say they do not look like the team we saw at the beginning of the season. That loss to the Gators turned their season around in a hurry. Dope Boys keep silencing the naysayers with 5 straight wins. No reason for me to think that it won’t be six in a row. Dope Boys are on fire right now. Might be a nightmare outcome for their opponents.
