Peeze’s Playbook – Week 9

I spent a lot of last week in Toronto with former Checkmate players Anthony Carbone (Carbs) and Anthony Farinaccio (AFarn).  Despite having to sleep on the couch it was awesome to spend time with friends and talk about old times.

After a little small talk, the boys told me of the tragedy that is Tornonto’s flag football league.  They now play in a league where there are no referees and points are scarcely counted.  Carbs told me that his touchdown passes were going to waste as they were falling through fingers and bouncing off of chests. Simply put, it was heartbreaking. It really does make one appreciate what we have.

No Drama for Viking Quest

The term ‘any given Sunday’ has become popular in our vernacular because of Oliver Stone’s same-named masterpiece.  It would be true then that anyone could win on any given (Shako) Dimanche.  In his first game at the quarterback position Shako Dimanche threw for 3 touchdowns in relief duty.  Even more impressively he found himself on the receiving stat sheet sheet as a receiver with 4 catches and 50 yards.  The key beneficiary of Dimanche’s outstanding performance was Chris Williams who caught 3 of his team’s 4 touchdowns.

Conversely, quarterback Corey Walwaski has struggled over the past few weeks and this game was no exception. Tune Squad has had a subpar season thus far and face a tough Warriors squad and a highly favored Mysterious and Magical Men. The bright spot in this game was Omar Naek.  He recorded 4 sacks which is somewhat typical for this incredible rusher.  However, his 3 catches and 2 touchdowns showed remarkable versatility.  The Tunes have an outside shot at making the playoffs but will need to play much better to do so.  They lost this past week by a score of 24-20 against the Vikings.

Gryphons Descend on Demons

Aleksander Papich is the most frustrating player in division 5.  While his play at quarterback has helped the Gryhpons play at a much higher level.  However, as I drafted him as my flex player, his quarterback stats do nothing for me.  His 5 touchdowns and 190 yards this past week did nothing for the success of Peeze’s Punching Pandas. Offensively all was going well for the Gryphons as Kano scored three touchdowns while Ordo and Paul added scores of their own.  On the other side of the ball Tony Depatie was flying all over the field and collecting flags.

As for the Speed Demons, this is the type of game that we hope never to see.  Holden was ineffective at quarterback, having thrown 3 interceptions.  The key in this game truly was that, in spite of a very tightly contested first half, the Speed Demons were not able to deal with the Gryphons adjustments.  In the end the one shining star in this game was Alex Lewis who caught 8 passes for 45 yards.  In the end it would not be enough as the Gryphons would defeat the Speed Demons by a score of 31-13.

Bagnato Takes a Bath

The Warriors have been playing well but one always wondered if they would slp up again.  Quarterback Mike Bagnato actually played a fairly efficient game.  However due to some miscommunications and a few drops they Warriors were only able to get into the redzone twice.  Samir Dahab still managed to do quite a bit of damage despite the Warriors inability to score on a consistent basis.  He caught 6 passes for 54 yards and both touchdowns in this game. Bagnato was visibly angry on the sideline as he shook the soccer nets on the sidelines in a manner that can only be compared to an irate Mr. Clean attacking an indignant bacterium.

Conversely, Pick 6 showed up to play in this one and they were able to force Bagnato’s first and only mistake early.  Sean Collins intercepted Bagnato’s first pass and ran it back deep into scoring position. Etienne Vaillancourt scored two touchdowns and Evan Ely Nolet had his best outing since week 1.  Zach Jauniaux had an impact on his first game with the team.  Having to replace an injured Frank Kaye and a newly released Sergio Sicoli looked as if it would be difficult to overcome.  However, this would not be the case as the Warriors beat Pick 6 by a final score of 31-12.

Cougars Lack Bite

In a game where Cougars quarterback struggled (having thrown multiple interceptions for the first time this season), Green Lantern Corps were able to walk away with a 32-27 win.  Adamo Iadeluca kept working his way down the field and he was able to move the ball despite only being able to score 4 times.  Gino Conforti caught an astounding 10 passes for an adequate 62 yards and Anthony Siggia added 6 more catches for 35 yards.  The two of them combined for 3 touchdowns.

Green Lantern Corps’ two headed monster of Mendy Cardichon and Greishe Handy Clerjuste were far more impressive. Cardichon won the team’s internal competition as he caught 7 passes and 3 touchdowns (not to mention his 2 touchdowns) eclipsing Clerjuste’s 4 catches for 67 yards and 2 scored.  Jerson Previllon had a sweet outing as he threw for 161 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Green Lantern Corps is now 3-5 with an outside chance of making the playoffs.  Having beaten one of the best teams on their schedule, they are doing their part.

Reflections, Rants and Ravings

  •          Conference A Central may only see one of their teams make the playoffs.
  •          The Tyrants are singing a familiar tune as the see a winning record after their team’s name and yet the see a +/- of -43.
  •          I wonder how good a kicker Charlie Brown would have been if Lucy wasn’t so mean.
  •          Only one team remains winless…Come on CPI! We’ve all got your back!
  •          Centurions, Checkmate, No Regard (pre-hashtag era, PHE if you will), Golden Eagles, Eagles, and Sphinx. Such is the list of teams that have gone undefeated in Division 5 and D who did not win a championship.  Game Changers are heading toward a 10-0 season. Let this be a cautionary tale.
  •          I decided La Belle et La Boeuf’s Fig, Arugula and Goat Cheese burger does not live up to it’s potential. I say it lacked a lemon and balsamic glaze (obviously).

The Injustice League

The worst punishment bestowed to any man is to win the Dagenais award (for finishing last place in Fantasy Football).  It looks like I am getting ready to compete with Moe Khan for this dishonor.  It is truly a dark day for all of us.

Power Rankings

  1. Game Changers (8-0)- They are the only undefeated team in the division. They get the one spot.
  2. Centurions (7-1)- The Centurions came back strong in week 8.
  3. Shamrocks (7-1)- They are making waves at the right time of the season. Luckily they do not play the same day as the St.Patrick’s day parade.
  4. Cougars (7-1)- I’m not crazy about their week 8 loss but this may be the kick in the pants that they need.
  5. Gryphons (6-2)- The Gryphons keep winning, perhaps I should stop picking against them. Their week 8 win against the Speed Demons is the statement win we have all been looking for.
  6. Cheeseburger Eddy (6-1-1)- They are back to their dominant ways.  Their second half 22-6 showing against the Midnight Bombers shows why no one should take the Eddy’s lightly.
  7. Tomahawk Nightmare (6-3)- They have won 4 straight games and they seem to be getting hot at the right time.
  8. Ghosts (6-2)- The Ghosts are now riding a three game winning streak.   Gaumont and Co. are riding.  Try and catch them riding dirty; they’ll make them pay.
  9. Mad Bears (5-2)- They did suffer a loss against Sphinx this week. If there was a game where they would slip up, that would be the one.
  10. Los Banditos (5-3)- It’s not always pretty but for the most part, Los Banditos find ways to get it done. Get’er done boys!

Other Teams Receiving Votes

Mat Domon’s votes were cast; for more info on the recount you can message him @MathieuDomonFPF.

  • Pardon My Swag(5-3)-It’s hard to get a feel for this team. I like this team but their lack of consistency bothers me. Another thing to keep in mind. Also, scoring a little over 25 points a game is not going to be enough to win games in the playoffs.
  • Midnight Bombers (4-4)- They lost one of the there last three big challenges to close out the season.  They need to make progress now or risk watching the finals from the stands in Brossard.
  • First Downers (4-4)- After having lost a key swing game in their season, the First Downers are hoping that week 10 won’t see their last down.
  • Tyrants (4-3-1)- They have some very winnable games at the end of their schedule and look to be poised to sneak into the playoffs.
