Week 2

The Monstars Have Gone 2-0 But Will Their Unbeaten Streak Continue?

By Paolo Della Rocca

Every man needs a minimum of 10 pairs of shoes. Let’s call it 12 if you include golf and football spikes. The fact remains that a gentleman requires attire for different settings. You wouldn’t wear a football helmet on a first date (role playing is more 3rd date territory, even then you would get some odd looks if you brought it out to the restaurant instead of leaving it in the bedroom). So here is the definitive list of the bare essentials:

  • Black Oxfords
  • Brown Oxfords (ideally wingtip or Brogues)
  • Oxblood Oxfords (because sometimes you want to wear black pants and not look like the waiter)
  • Black Dress Loafers
  • Brown Dress Loafers
  • Dress Boots
  • Casual Boots
  • Boat Shoes
  • Monk Straps
  • Dress Sneakers or Tennis Shoes(as in not your gym shoes. Sometimes it’s cool not to look homeless at a bar)
  • Black Formal Shoe

Sometimes I tie my introductions into football. Sometimes I just like shoes.

Weekend at Benny’s

In the same week Benny Goodfriend would get nominated to the Hall Of Fame, he would also read the schedule wrong and end up at the wrong field. Having to start the game without their quarterback, Solide was shaky ground. The game would end by a score of 24-21 but it was not initially as close as it would seem. The score was 24-7 early in the second half when the Predators seemed intent on beating themselves. Kenton Lowe dropped a would-be interception and two possible touchdowns in this game. Jacob Bernett was the most reliable Predator receiver in this game as he hauled in 5 catches for 80 yards.

When Benny Goodfriend finally arrived he did play well and he does seem intent on sending snapper Paul Lapierre to the all-star game as he caught 8 passes for 85 yards and 2 touchdowns. When looking at this roster prior to the season I felt that Solide would lack the overall team speed required to come from behind to win games. This is a game where they tried to do so in the second half. We will see if this is the actual character of this team or if it was simply a case of the Predators trying everything in their power to give the game away. An interesting stat line in this game is that Ryan Aridi who has had trouble containing James Floreani in the past was able to sack him 4 times. Nonetheless, it was all for naught in a losing effort.

Just in Prime

In a game between two established groups in FPF, Past Our Prime came out like gangbusters against KGP Champs. They put up 25 points in the first half and were fairly dominant from the get go. Other than allowing a late touchdown, Past Our Prime controlled this game from start to finish. Kevin Wilson intercepted his second pass in as many weeks and the Halloween themed terrors have now played great defensively against two formidable quarterbacks to start the season. On the other side of the ball Vinny Gualano and Kevin Wilson scored twice while Dale Williams and Darren Bicknell added a touchdown each as well. Jay Ulley filled in admirably at quarterback in Craig O’Brien’s absence.

KGP are struggling to find answers in this young season. Phil Cutler had a fairly good outing this week and while Past Our Prime did have trouble containing Fred Saleh who caught 7 passes for 107 yards and 3 touchdowns. I the end it was once again the defense that let down KGP Champs as they were unable to stop Jay Ulley and the Past Our Prime offense. Past Our Prime move to 2-0 while KGP Champs lose this game by a score of 37-31 and fall to 0-2.

Manz Don’t Make Her Dance

I must say, having watched Texas BareManz play, I am excited to see this team march out there each week. They have a ton of athleticism and they play a fast-paced exciting style of flag football. In their game this week, they led against an experienced and potent BearSkins team. Quarterback Adam Sinagra seems to be developing a favourite target in Jaylan Grandison who added another touchdown to his season total (his second in as many weeks). However, Sinagra did not have a great second half and ended the game with 3 interceptions on his line. The Texas BareManz would eventually lose this game 41-19 but they played a great first half of football; my hope for this team is that they make the necessary adjustments before it’s too late. On the BearSkins side of things, this game showed me that they have persistence as well as firepower. Coming into the second half, they just looked like a different team. Using all of his amazing weapons, Neil Etinson was able to bludgeon the Texas BareManz defense. The BearSkins hit hard and fast with deep strikes up the sidelines and down the middle of the field. Jean-Michel Laplante and Aleksander Papich also added defensive scores as the BearSkins ended up winning this one as soundly as bears hibernate.

Of Moose and Men

by Simon Dagenais

In a game many of us anticipated as an offensive shootout, it really didn’t disappoint. The game really went back and forth as both quarterbacks exchanged touchdowns and Fred Morissette managed to cut down Daniel Lazarra’s lead to 26-25 right before half-time and a confident Moose team went into the half knowing they would start the half with the ball.

Throughout the game Valdy Aceus of Moose and Zack Jauniaux of Sea Assassins had tremendous games as both receivers couldn’t be stopped and kept piling on numbers. With the game coming to an end, Sea Assassins took the lead 39-37 with about 4 minutes left on the clock. Driving the field slowly, Morissette managed his time properly and ate most of the clock and finally punched it in to Vincent Lauzon with 4 plays remaining. Lazarra had one more chance and got to half field before the final play. Throwing for the back of the endzone, his pass got broken up by a beautiful play from Josh Levine to give Moose their first win of the season (by a score of 44-39). What a finish!

Rants Reflections and Ravings

  • The answer to haw many Espresso are too many is 4. 4 Espresso are definitely too many.
  • Broccaision added a third and potential hall of fame Daoust as brother Derek has joined the ranks. While increasing the number of Daousts on your roster is sure to drive up your decibel level it is also certain.
  • Monstars and Predators are facing off as two undefeated (well technically anyway) teams are set to face off in week 3. This was the hardest game for me to pick this week.
  • Cleaning tarnished silver has to be the most arduous household task. Letès pretend that’s why I didn’t post my article last night.
  • FPF has announced it’s list of potential Hall Of Fame inductees. In the Media/Staff section I am formally lobbying for GM Kolethras to take it home. This is not meant as disrespect to Rehan Sarwar but the bulk of GM’s work has been done when the league was at it’s largest. Covering a big league with large divisions is a very different type of task. The full list of nominees can be found here: https://www.flagplusfootball.com/en/news/1097
  • Ryan Aridi wasn’t the only one who recorded 4 sacks this week. Adam Rosen did the same for Los Luchadores. As for Ryan he used his speed to put up team picks in record time. Well done Mr.Aridi.
  • I didn’t include Cap Toe or Aligator skin shoes in my list but you can bet I wanted to. They are subcategories more than they are categories in their own right. If they didn’t cross you mind you should feel like less of a man.
  • 3 Qb’s had completion percentages above 80% in week 2(Daniel Lazzara, Frédéric Morissette and Rob Robinson). The quarterback play in this division has been incredible.
  • The division that I’m hving a hard time making heads or tales out of is Conference B central. I can actually envision the winner of this division having a .500 record.
  • VPC vs. Prestige World wide Looks to be the most exciting game this week. If you can, check it out because it promises to be more interesting than the plans that you’re pretending you had.
  • Why does auto correct keep changing food to good? I started to question whether or not I had been spelling it wrong all my life.
  • Travis Moses got hurt last week (a sever knee injury). The FPF community was amazing in it’s show of support for him. Travis, get well soon! I can’t wait to see you on the field again!

Hungover Visions of the World of Tomorrow

As I applied Voltaren to various injured body parts (thank God it isn’t on FPF’s list of banned substances), I started to count down my correct and incorrect predictions. I think it is the first time in history that a division’s 2 writers have had a record that was below the .500 mark. It’s been tough; Mat struggled and I struggled more. This week I will make some contrarian picks just because it seems to be that kind of season. That being said I’ve chosen my spots carefully and I have my reasons for picking underdogs where I have. Here are my picks. Remember that you can tell Mat domon not to quit his day job by tweeting him @MathieuDomonFPF.

Saturday’s Secret Service

With 2 weeks completed teams know that the odds of making the playoffs after having stared 0-3 is highly unlikely. 0-2 teams will be particularly vicious this week and I expect and that the action will be better than ever. Have any thoughts that you’d like to share with the pundits? If so you can email me at [email protected] or if you would like the world to see you can always reach out to me on twitter @PeezeFPF. For you email types, I promise I will answer your emails as soon as I remember my password.

For further analysis, tune in to the official FPF division 3 podcast Calling the Audible where GM Kolethras and I will discuss if Ewoks are hairier than Wookies, the benefits of tree bark in your diet and why soda cans are just so danr fun to crush against one’s skull. You can watch us live Thursday nights at 7:15 at www.theunclemikeshow.com or download the show via iTunes or at http://fpf.podomatic.com.   You can always tweet the show live by tweeting @EagleFPF or feel free to tweet GM Kolethras @GMKole44 and let him know why we voted Brent Callender off the island.

Have a great and safe week of action. See you at the fields!
