Peeze’s Playbook (Div D) – Week 4

As we approach the midpoint of the season, I would like to remind teams that typically, I use the fifth week to assess each team and rank them within their conference. I usually use this opportunity to discuss the season teams are having, talk about the key players on their roster and finally, make a prediction of what I think their final record will be. This season, I will do the same.

So, while there will be less reporting on games in the upcoming week’s worth of article’s there will be more in depth analysis on each team.  Here’s a little something to chew on while you imagine what I may say about you or your team.

Weekend Recap

A Slice of Lime

I had thought that this was a game that had ‘blow-out’ written all over it.  Limetime looked to avenge their week 3 loss and Big Blue Wrecking Crew has just not found their stride yet.  In a game where both quarterbacks had virtually the same stats, it was the converts that truly made the difference.  Perhaps this speaks to Manning’s comfort level with his teammates.  The greatest comfort of course is having a receiver you can count on.  Brad Demers has been that all season and this game was no exception.  Having caught 2 of Manning’s 5 touchdown passes as part of a 6 catch, 72 yard performance, Demers was in his element.  Human pick-machine Joseph Cecere helped on the defensive side, by adding another interception.  He has picked off the opposing quarterback 7 times so far this season.

For BBWC, despite losing 33-30 there are finally some signs of life.  Dean Demetriou has started to return to last season’s form and has begun to brush the rust off.  Sergio Nappi and Mike Franzese have started to establish themselves in the Big Blue receiving corps. Important to note, Big Blue Wrecking Crew actually led at the half for the second consecutive week.  Once they learn how to close ou games, this will be a very dangerous team.

Vikings Were No Match for Mutants

Technically my pick for this game was right.  However, given that the X-Men won 27-25, it would not be accurate to say that they were no match for the Vikings.  New quarterback Rick Cummins looked fairly good in this one as he was able to protect the ball and move the ball down the field.  While he did move it mostly on the ground (he rushed for 136 yards and 2 touchdowns, which made him the leagues weekly leader in rushing yards), the Vikings were able to keep pace for most of the game.  Despite a slow start they did win the second half but fell just short as they were unable to complete the comeback.

A few days after Terry Tam posited that the X-Men were too strong for division D, they survive in a close game against a team that typically dwells in the division’s basement.   Swaminadhan used his mutant power of keeping defensive backs away from his throws as he has now completed 18 touchdown throws to 2 interceptions.  The X-men survive a scare but now get ready to face the Centurions in perhaps their first true test of the season in week 5.

Jaggerbomb Could Not be Locked Down LAME!!!

Another week; another tie.  I told Justin Blanchard that before the season ended I would predict a game to end in a tie.  While he that I was out of my mind, I insisted that he lacked my courage.  As it turns out a battle between Lockdown and Jaggerbomb would have been the best bet.  While everyone thought that this would be a tight game, no one expected it to end in a 40-40 tie.

Jeremie Gauthier was up to his usual antics in this game as he had more rushing attempts than he had completed passes.  Amazingly, while he did run for 116 yards and a touchdown, he was also sacked 11 times (once by Steve Lamery, once by Alex D’Aquila and 9 times by Jizreel Botat).  Coming to Gauthier’s aid was the Jaggerbomb receiving corps as Max Marsan, Vincent Villeneuve, Anthony Hotte-Matteo and Clarence Allen as they all had at least one touchdown catch.

When Pat Riot had his chance to shine he did not disappoint.  His ability to elevate his game as well as be a leader in difficult circumstances was on display.  Needing to rely on conversions to compensate for a safety, Riot looked as calm as ever.  Geoffry Brown added 3 touchdown catches to bring his career total to 62.  Lockdown has played their toughest games on back to back weeks.  I expect them to get back into top form.

Zoo Keepers Pardoned

Le Zoo won this game by a score of 32-21 and while both halves were hard on the eyes for different reasons, I believe it gave us some insight into both of these teams.  The first half was an exhibition in offensive futility while in the second half neither defense looked to be interested in making a stop.  This is where Le Zoo really did take control of the game.  While the Zoo are a team that have had their struggles in the early part of this season, no one can doubt the connection between Frank Kaye and Patrick St-Amand.  If it seems to the untrained eye that one in every three passes thrown to St-Amand in the touchdown it would appear that the untrained eye is observant, analytical and hopefully located in one’s eye socket.  St-Amand is  scoring a touchdown once every 2.67 catches.  Moreover, his ability to use his body to create space is a wonderful compliment to Kaye’s ability to fire the ball into tight windows.

On the other side we have Pardon My Swag.  While they have a superstar wide receiver in their own right (Karl Lavallee), they have not gotten off the ground this season.  This game saw the re-emergence of another certified stud wide receiver in Scott Novio. Despite the brand power on this franchise we have yet to see it result in wins. Perhaps a little more time with developing quarterback Kevin Krupa will provide for a more fruitful second half of the season.

%?$*ing Hostile

As in the above mentioned Pantera song, Hostile Territory can now make the claim: “We stand alone!”  In a battle between two undefeated teams, in a division where 3 teams entered the fourth week of the season with spotless records, two teams would clash for an early edge in the Conference B South divisional championship.

After beating the Longhorns by a score of 30-20, Hostile Territory indeed look, ready to defend their current top position in the division.  In this game, Angelo Garofolo truly looked every bit the QB of the year contender that he has been touted as.  Known more for his ability to scramble, Garofolo put up 215 yards passing in this game and he looked in control of his offence the entire game. Francois Deslauriers has come up big game after game for his quarterback and this game was no exception.

To their credit, the Longhorns played their game.  They stuck to what has been working for them all season long.  However, an interception thrown by Moodie and another drive stalling prematurely was enough to hault the Longhorns.  The Longhorns have been a strong team in the early part of this season, however, the question has always been, how will they match-up when paired against a younger, quicker team.  We may have found our answer.  Either way, the Longhorns will be ready for battle week after week.

The League of Not-Quite-Legends

Oh what a glorious day it was on Monday morning when I awoke to find out that I had won this week in fantasy football.  As sweet as it would typically be it was perhaps an even more momentous occasion as it marked the first time, a weekly winner would get to tear into their opponents on Calling the Audible. Unfortunately for my FPF colleagues the honor of the first ripping was given to me.  Unlike my gentlemanly associates, I am not a very nice person.  I’m sure that by now, they’ve all heard what I had to say about their teams, mothers or girlfriends. For those of you who haven’t it’s time to scroll down click on the link to the podcast at the bottom of my article and enjoy the roast.  Either way, here is the fantasy update.

Predictions

It is a sweet and sour McDonald’s dipping sauce kind of week.  A time in my life one would refer to as hot and sour soup.  If such a flavor existed one may be inclined to claim that it was the type of week that reminded them of Chocolate and the opposite flavor of chocolate, coming together in a blan, tasteless parfait.

While I took Justin’s fantasy team to the woodshed and bent them over my knee, he did in fact beat me in the weekly predictions.  While he went 10-4, I went 8-6.  What’s even worse is that our season long running record now stands tied at 35-21.  I now know how Jaggerbomb feel…just like kissing the Eagle’s sister.  This week’s picks will be better; I promise.

The Tuesday Throw Down

Those who don’t know me well say that I,m a man of the world.  Some have even compared me to Carmen San Diego.  However, despite the somewhat androgynous name, I’d like to remind those people that Carmen San Diego was in fact a fictional woman.  To find out who I really am or to discuss any matter of thing FPF related or otherwise, please email me at [email protected] or reach me on Twitter @PeezeFPF. For those interested in a conversation with an equally, unfocused media member feel free to tweet Terry @TerryTamFPF.

This week’s Division D edition of Calling the audible is as fun as ever.  We discuss the fantasy draft, talk about the games of the week, I rip into all of my colleagues for their fantastical ineptitude, we speak to Max Marsan about the hottest fan bases in FPF. As always, Mat Domon (aka, Matty Demonic) calls in to talk about the 3 weakest subdivisions.  Check it out at http://podomatic.fpf.com or by subscribing on iTunes.

See you on the fields, till then, thank you for letting me be myself.
