Mid-Season Awards; Week 5 Recap

Ladies and gentlemen, and football heads everywhere, it is that time of year again. It’s time for my annual Mid-Season Awards!

In this article, I will pick my choices for Quarterback, Receiver, Rusher, Two-Way, and Defensive Player of the year to this point. This year’s edition will also see a first, as I will give you my picks for Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the year.

For those of you who are new to the process, I will pick 5-7 candidates in each respective category. As I say every year, if you’re upset that you’re not picked, or even nominated for an award, my advice would be to A) Play harder, and B) you still have a chance to appear in my End of the Season Award Article, SO PLAY HARDER!

With that being said, here we go…

Quarterback of the Year (Mid-Season)

Jordan Rossie (Smokin’Axolotls) 19 TDs / 4 INTs / 620 Yards / 8 Sacks / 55.6 % / 10 AVG

Mathew Yanakoulias (RoadRunners) 24 TDs / 11 INTs / 1,015 Yards / 3 Sacks / 56.8 % / 13 AVG

P.J Belec (Gyr)                           17 TDs / 5 INTs / 583 Yards / 3 Sacks / 56.3 % / 13 AVG

Michael Solimene (Warriors)     19 TDs / 4 INTs / 701 Yards / 6 Sacks / 57.9 % / 11 AVG

Brad Evans (TDs and Beer)         27 TDs / 1 INT / 863 Yards / 13 Sacks / 73.6 % / 11 AVG

Jean-Felix Daloze (Jagys & Chill) 18 TDs / 6 INTs / 679 Yards / 2 Sacks / 55.1 % / 13 AVG

Winner: Brad Evans (TDs and Beer) – I went with Evans here, because has the most TD passes of the group, as well as the second most yards. While some may point to the fact that he has been sacked 13 times (the second most in Division E), I would point out that despite the fact that he has run for 125 on the season, the FPF veteran isn’t exactly the most fleet of foot.  Evans has also performed well when he and his team have taken on some of the elite Div. E teams, which is something not every passer on this list can say.

Receiver of the Year (Mid-Season)

Antoine Dansereau-Leclerc (Trinity) 10 Rec / 211 Yards / 7 TDs / 21 AVG

Alexis Bessette (SPARTANS) 17 Rec / 407 Yards / 6TDs / 24 AVG

Justin Lerner (RoadRunners) 23 Rec / 401 Yards / 10 TDs / 17 AVG

Marc-Antoine Vallée  (Les Bonhommes Jaunes) 15 Rec / 217 Yards / 6 TDs / 15 AVG

Jameel Greenidge (Tigers) 29 Rec / 377 Yards / 10 TDs / 13 AVG

Jean-Christophe Ferland (Beastmode) 19 Rec / 247 Yards / 6 TDs / 13 AVG

Justin Santillo (Suh-Tang Clan) 17 Rec / 211 Yards / 6TDs / 12 AVG

Winner: Jameel Greenidge (Tigers) – Although there are a lot of impressive candidates, the pick has to be Greenidge, as he has the most catches, yards touchdowns and most likely the best jumping ability out of all the other receivers.

Rusher of the Year (Mid-Season)

Simon Laporte (Jean Guy) 7 Sacks / 1 Knockdown

Sammy Falletta (Victorious Secret) 8 Sacks / 1 Knockdown

Cédrick Jetté-Lemay (Aliens) 14 Sacks / 0 Knockdowns

Benjamin Dansereau-Leclerc (Trinity) 8 Sacks / 1 Knockdown

Nathanael Niedermann (Gyr) 12 Sacks / 3 Knockdowns

Alex Torres (TDs and Beer) 8 Sacks / 3 Knockdowns

Maxime Ledoux (Les Bonhommes Jaunes) 8 Sacks / 0 Knockdowns

Winner: Cédrick Jetté-Lemay (Aliens) – The 4th year veteran gets the nod because, he has the most sacks with 14, and because when his team (Aliens) played Gyr in Week 3, Jetté-Lemay had more QB takedowns than Niedermann. In case you vets are wondering, yes I remember the time when this award belonged to Simon Laporte. Things change so quickly over the course or a season and a half lol.

Two-Way Player of the Year (Mid-Season)

Alexis Bessette (SPARTANS)

Nathanael Niedermann (Gyr)

Justin Lerner (The RoadRunners)

Antoine Dansereau-Leclerc (Trinity)

Yannick Doston (Jagys & Chill)

William Power (Smokin Axolotls)

Jeremie Ledoux (Les Bonhommes Jaunes)

Winner: Alexis Bessette (SPARTANS) – If there was a three-way award, he would win that one too. So far this year offensively, the second year player has thrown for 7 touchdowns, caught 8 TDs, and rushed for 2 more. On the other side of the ball, Bessette, has recorded 5 interceptions (tied for a team-high) and batted down 2 passes. Most importantly, he is a huge reason why his team is undefeated at the mid-way point of the season.

Defensive Player of the Year (Mid-Season)

Daniel Hernandez SPARTANS)

William Power (Smokin’ Axolotls) 6 INTs / 1 Knockdown

Justin Lerner (The RoadRunners) 9 INTs / 1 Knockdown / 1 TD

Matthew Gagliardi (Goon Squad) 5 INTs / 4 Knockdowns / 1 TD

 Simon Bosquet Beaudoin (Aliens) 5 INTs / 1 Sack / 3 Knockdowns / 2 TDs

Vincent Marquis (Trinity) 4 INTs / 6 Knockdowns

Antoine Dansereau-Leclerc (Trinity) 5 INTs / 3 Knockdowns / 1 TD

Winner: Justin Lerner (The RoadRunners) – A lot of worthy guys made the list, but you can’t argue with 9 interceptions.

Offensive Rookie of the Year (Mid-Season)

Mathew Yanakoulias (The RoadRunners) 24 TDs / 11 INTs / 1,015 Yards / 3 Sacks / 56.8 % / 13 AVG

Patrick Geffard (KRUSADERS) 28 Rec / 279 Yards / 2 TDs

Dylan Segall (Dirty Mike n the Boys) 14 Rec / 216 Yards / 1 TD

Zackary Alberts-Gill (Super Troopers) 14 Rec / 121 Yards / 6 TDs

Jules Ownby (FACE Jazz) 11 Rec / 142 Yards / 4 TDs

Jeremy White (Beastmode) 25 Rec / 265 Yards / 5 TDs

Winner: Mathew Yanakoulias (The RoadRunners) – I really wanted to go with Alberts-Gill here, but it’s a Quarterback-driven league, and Yanakoulias and his 24 TDs did narrowly miss-out on taking home the mid-season award for QB of the Year.

Defensive Rookie of the Year

Sammy Falletta (Victorious Secret) 8 Sacks

Nathanael Niedermann (Gyr) 12 Sacks

Januson Vas (The Warriors) 5 INT / 1 Sack / 1 PD

 Erik Scattolin (Trinity) 3 INTs / 1 Sack / 2 TDs

Dustin Best (TDs and Beer) 2 INTs / 4 Knockdowns / 8 Tackles

Winner: Nathanael Niedermann (Gyr) – Not only is rusher one of the hardest positions to play in FPF, the rookie has the second most sacks in the entire division.

Best Winless Team (Mid-Season) * Bonus Category

Gronky Kong

Permian Panthers

Dirty Mike n the Boys

Winner: Dirty Mike n the Boys: This one was actually pretty easy. With the exception of their Week 1 loss to the Aliens, in which they were blown-out 25-0, Dirty mike n the Boys have been in all of the rest of their games this year, as they haven’t lost by more than 2 touchdowns. Last week against Les Bonhommes Jaunes, they even came within one possession of winning the game.

Combine all of the above with the fact that they are starting a first-year passer in Jordan Allard, and that the team itself consists of all rookies, and like I said earlier, this pick was really easy.

Re-Cap of Week 5…

The SPARTANS showed why they are the class of Conference B, as they laid a beat-down on The Warriors. I have no problem admitting when I am wrong, and I was for picking against the SPARTANS. Despite being short-handed, with the loss of Eric Thananayagam to injury in Week 4, and then losing two-way player Tommy Colombo early in their Week 5 contest (he did not return) the SPARTANS weathered the storm, and used a dominating first half offensively as they’ve been doing all season, to take care of business against their opponents.

The game also saw a breakout offensively from rusher Charles-David Martel who picked apart The Warriors defense on hooks and drag routes to the tune of 5 catches for 46 yards.

On the other side of the ball, Martel gave opposing QB Michael Solimene fits all game long, as he made him either have to rush his throws, or take the sack. Martel finished the game with 2 sacks and 2 batted balls. Good job all around for him and his team.

I hate to kick a team when they’re down, but you kind of saw this one coming…after being upset 33-22 by the Tigers in Week 4, Jagys & Chill took out their frustration on the Permian Panthers as they defeated them 55-0…What I didn’t see coming, was the performance out of the P.P offense.  They had 3 QBs throw the game. Julian Iacovantuono, Jon Kirby, and Mike Canelho combined to go for a disastrous 4 for 21 for -1 Yards, and 5 INTs…no that’s not a misprint. Luckily for them, I am not writing a Fall Section this week. All I will say is STEP IT UP BOYS, that’s ridiculous!

Speaking of ridiculous the game between Les Huards and the Rolling Thunder turned into an episode of Monday Night Raw. A lot of trash talking, pushing, objectionable conducts, and bad football were on display Tuesday night. I won’t get into too many details, but dabbing after scoring a TD right in front of your opponents, and more importantly the refs isn’t exactly the smartest move. We’re all here to have fun and to play some ball. Let’s keep it classy, San Diego.

I was right last week, when I picked the Aliens vs the Smokin Axolotls as my first pick for Game of the Week, as it proved to be a defensive thriller that came down to the wire. As has always been the case since the league came into existence in the winter of 2005, extra points matter, and they did once again last Sunday night, as the Smokin Axolotls were able to get one more in the second half (great comeback btw) as they were able to escape with the 19-18 victory. Definitely a tough loss for the Aliens, especially with a murderer’s coming up over the next 3 weeks.

Finally, I was wrong by not picking the RoadRunners versus Trinity game as one of my picks as Game of the Week. This was the definition of an offensive classic, as both teams took chances, and made tons of plays. Tying to watch this one at the same time as the Rolling Thunder/Les Huards games, was definitely not an easy job (thanks a lot schedule Gods lol) as the minute you turned your head, something big happened.

Fast-forward to the last 2 minutes, after a 2-yard TD by Steven Kritselas to give the RoadRunners the lead 26-25 lead, a few plays later, Trinity took back the lead 31-26 on a 40-yard TD bomb from our very own Jean-Félix Marquis to Wide Receiver Guillaume Foucault who was wide open due to blown coverage. With all the momentum on their side, and only 4 plays left, it looked like Trinity had pulled off the win. Not so fast, as the RoadRunners showed exactly why they have their name, as they marched the field in 2 plays, and scored to take the lead for good on a 26-yard catch and run by Justin Lerner who broke about 2 would-be-tackles in the process.

With 2 plays left, Marquis threw a prayer in the end-zone, but it was picked off by my pick for Mid-Season Defensive Player of the Year, the aforementioned Lerner. Game over, victory RoadRunners.
