Peeze’s Playbook

Week 6

Those who are regular readers of my article know that from time to time, I cover topics that are not always related to FPF. As someone who studied history, as a chronicler of this league and of this time and as a person with an appreciation for historically significant events I feel it is my duty to break from the mold and talk about such events from time to time.

This week, the American Supreme Court passed a law in favor of marriage equity that granted the same rights to LBGT couples that straight couples have had for a long time. Of course I am talking about the ubiquitous legalization of same sex marriages across all 50 states. This has prompted many hateful public comments and posts that has had me cringing. It, at times makes it hard for me to associate with my fellow humans, as I do not understand the need to segregate and attack those with which we do not share a common worldview. It is with great pride however (pun-intended if you must) that I look upon that ruling and hope that one day we will see a truly, more tolerant and understanding tomorrow.

While we have had fun at the expense of the immense wave of tweets proclaiming that many who protested this ruling would move to Canada (where same sex marriage has been legal for 10 years). I trust that the electronic footprint laid by these insidious and revolting (while idiotically entertaining) will be but an afterthought to the truly momentous day where humanity became a little more human. Congratulations are in order for all my LBGT friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. The struggle has been worth it, and it will continue to see progress.

Battle of Boroughs

In last week’s article I mentioned that Steve Sanner was probably the best acquisition anyone has made this season. I then copied the format of the mid-season write-up for the DG Goons, and pasted it to have something to work form and forgot to erase Steve Sanner’s name in various spots, making it look like he played for as many as 5 different team. I will say that the DG Goons are happy that he does in fact play with them. Sanner was all over the field and made 8 of his team’s 15 tackles. While he is known as a primarily defensive force, Sanner has also become the focal point of the offense. My worry is that this is too simple a game plan to win games. Derrick Fontana made a great catch in this one and he is an excellent receiver. Fontana and Sanner should serve to open up the offense, however, for the moment the offense runs through them completely and is somewhat stagnant as games go on. This was particularly the case in this game where DG Goons struggled to move the chains on a few key downs.

On the other side of the spectrum, James Nowakowski seems to be improving by leaps and bounds each week. With each passing game he looks more confident, more accurate and the beard is as sharp as ever. I also appreceiate how well he has been spreading the ball around. This game was no exception as three playes had at least 45 yards receiving: Alex Holowach (46), Jean Sebastien Collin (55) and Thomas Zorko (56). Still what impressed me was that the BronxBombers were able to keep the DG Goons to 4 scores and adapt to their style of play with ease. The extra two possessions provided by Alex Holowach’s 2 interceptions lead the Bombers to a 38-26 victory.

Hooligans Quieted by TDs

SMYTDs have been one of the biggest disappointments this season. While the defense has played well. The offense has been somewhat disappointing. However, while it did take 6 weeks, Mike Addona may have quieted some of his most ardent doubters. Addona threw for a career high 244 yards and 6 touchdowns. It seemed as though everywhere he looked he had receivers running open. Anthony Addona had a huge impact on this game as well as he caught 8 oasses for 103 yards and two touchdowns. The younger Addona also intercepted two passes in a winning effort as SMYTDs beat Hooligans by a score of 41-28. What was nice was seeing Mike Addona finally connecting with new acquisitions Matthew and Alexander Bergamin as they combined for 8 catches and 73 yards as well as two more touchdowns.

This game started off on a positive note as on the first play of the game the ball was snapped for a safety and the Hooligans offense took the field with a 2-0 lead. However, while Avi Yayon did a decent jo in his first game quarterbacking the Hooligans, he was just not sharp yet as he was intercepted twice and could not keep up with SMYTD’s output. Overall, it was great to see Yayon completing quick and short passes and having a gifted receiving corps they were able to make plays in space. Hooligans have another chance for a second win this week as they face a struggling Globo Gym Purple Cobra.

Eagles Soar but Still Can’t Reach the Sun

Les Aigles have had three strong outings in a row. This was perhaps there best performance of the season. They scored 24 points in the first half and Nicolas Schaefer had perhaps his best performance of the season. Christophe Lapointe had a coming out party as ha caught 4 catches for 75 yards and 3 touchdowns. Charles Fontaine has continued to develop as one of the team’s most consistent players on both sides of the ball. However, Les Aigles second half struggles persisted and they scored only 8 points in the second half and they were not able to close this game out. They have averaged a mere 8.5 points scored in the second half.

Bromigos made yet another change at quarterback as they saw Jean-Mathieu Vidal at the pivot position. Vidal played fairly well but there is definitely room for improvement. Yet, when the game came down to some key moments, Vidal and Bromigos were at their best. The Bromigos did get off to a slow start but were re-invigorated on the last play of the game when Vidal threw a pass 40 yards down the field and it floated over three leaping defenders and into the chest of Nicolas Fortier-Poulin. In the second half Bromigos built off of the emotions of their late first half score and Vidal used his legs to buy time and move the ball. In the end, Bromigos success shone through and the game was won on converts as Bromigos beat Les Aigles by a score of 33-32.

Blue Devils Neutered

Hours before the game Blue Devils quarterback and team captain Gianfranco Ranaudo posted on the FPF Facebook wall looking for players to fill his roster. The end result was that, for this week, he was able to build an interesting roster. The most celebrated of these single usage pickups was Kevin Lubin who caught 3 passes for 43 yards and scored a touchdown. Adding to that was his interception may have been enough to win on many weeks. However, this game featured an ever anemic offence that insisted on taking chances that were completely unnecessary and they struggled to move the ball and the result was a 28-8 loss to D’s Nuts.

Despite the score, D’s nuts were not entirely sharp themselves. In many scenarios that would be a good thing as it would prevent self-inflicted wounds. However, when it comes to offensive execution then it is definitely problematic. Devin Daoust has been the engine that drives D’s nuts. This game was no exception he led the team in touchdowns (while the Blue Devils did hold him relatively in check) and he did sack Gianfranco Ranaudo 3 times. D’s Nuts picked up an easy win against a make-shift roster but they will be tested in future weeks as they face Jagerbomb, Tomahawk Nightmare and Warhawks on 3 of the coming 4 weeks.

Power Rankings

There are a few very good teams that did not make this list. However, it may be quite understandable considering that so many teams are above the ,500 mark. Nonetheless, I’m sure you have complaints, as such; please feel free to voice them on Twitter @PeezeFPF.

  1. Warhawks (6-0)- Another perfect week for the Warhawks. I am running out of ways of saying they’re awesome. So, they’re awesome.

  1. Formerly Formerly Formerly Teamless (5-1)- They’ve only given up 94 points thus far this season. They are the real deal.

  1. Jagerbomb (5-1)- I don’t know if anyone can guard Maxim Marzan. It definitely hasn’t seemed like it so far this season. With their next 4 games going against a tough gauntlet of competitors we will see if anyone is up for the challenge.

  1. 5 Star Prospects (3-1)- With a big game coming up against the Tyrants, 5 Star Prospects have a chance to show whether or not they are up to the challenge.

  1. Tyrants (5-1)- They are led into battle with a revitalized Andre Frederick. He has played well on both sides of the ball this season and that has been key for the Tyrants.

  1. Backyard Bullies (5-1)- The Backyard Bullies are playing a dangerous game. Perhaps they did not look up the definition of bullying prior to choosing a team name. However, I will admit that, the Backyard Love Tap is not nearly as threatening while it is infinitely more erotic.

  1. BronxBombers (4-2)- I think that the schedule sets up nicely for them. All the matchups that remain are winnable and I would not be surprised to see this team surge into the playoffs.

  1. Tomahawk Nightmare (4-2)- Jean François Marquis has thrown as many interceptions as he did all of last season. Regardless, Tommy Cauchemar are winning games. I like the overall team effort. It reminds me of the efficacy of Flinstone vitamins. For the record, those are still my favorite candies.

  1. D’s Nuts (4-2)– I was not impressed with D’s Nuts offensive showing last week. This team is starting to remind me of Limetime of past seasons that plays down to the level of completion against weaker teams. This week they will take on someone their own size and will have a chance to prove me wrong.

  1. The Alpha T’s (3-3)- I honestly would not be surprised to see them beat the Warhawks this week. It is rare for a team to lose a game and move up n my rankings. They have done so. Let’s hope they don’t let me down.

Other Teams Receiving Votes

I asked a panel of world-renowned physicists for their votes. There answer was oddly unanimous and inappropriately sexual. So, as usual, here are the other teams receiving votes. Also, once again, I was the only one casting votes.

  • Diablos (3-3)- With the return of Gab Wiseman, this team is starting to make some noise. There is plenty of season ahead of them and we will know soon enough whether or not this team is ready to turn the corner.

  • Les Affreux (4-2)- Maybe they shouldn’t have fallen out of my power rankings. However, I feel as though Les Affreux may just be that team that is only good enough to beat the teams they are supposed to beat.

  • Hot Boys Hotline (4-2)-The lack of scoring my have caught up with them. I did not make up that narrative, it has existed all season. Tom Gatehouse needs too play at the same level as his defense.

  • Gotham Knights (3-3)- Gotham Knights have only beaten teams with a combined record of 2-16. Perhaps we can say they may be a tad overrated. One more loss will have investors in Wayne Enterprises jumping from the rooftop!

Hung-over Visions of the World of Tomorrow

So last week may have been the easiest week to predict this season. I went 11-1 and Mat went 10-2. I think that this week will see the worst scores for myself and Mat as many of the games this week are between teams of a very similar caliber. As such this would be a good week to make fun of Mat Domon by tweeting him @MathieuDomonFPF.
