Inside the Redzone (DC) – Week 4

Welcome to Inside The Redzone a la week quatre! Breaking News… For Teh Lulz has guaranteed themselves five victories for the season. Simple arithmetic would indicate that they need to win 4 out of their remaining 6 games which seems like a daunting task given the fact they have a cushion of 2 losses. However they seem very confident in themselves therefore I give them the benefit of the doubt and hence, the countdown to five wins has begun. If they are able to pull off 5 wins, I’ll do a taped interview on camera with the entire team and put the video in my column. Furthermore I will be carrying around a video camera with me when I am on the field so if you want to pull me aside to give me a piece of your mind, talk about your team or give guarantee of sorts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43l-00xEK3g check out this video clip of a player who guaranteed a victory for his Division B team CCI Eagles last Sunday) I will tape you and put it in my weekly column. So have some fun out there, play hard and let’s not forget that we play to WIN the game.

Week 4 Headlines

Still Perfect

After four weeks of play, four teams are still perfect! Flying Weasels, Triple Sixers, Cobras and Chaos. All four teams face good competition this Sunday but will most likely remain 5-0 after week 5. However who amongst these teams will remain perfect the longest during the season? Will there be multiple teams with 10-0 record? I personally believe the Flying Weasels have the best chance.

Too Close for Comfort

Eight out of eleven games this past weekend were won by one score, which says a lot about the parity in division C. In week 4, there were many great endings which make watching Division C football even more fun. Looking at the standings, only four teams are winless so eighteen teams have at least one win. Of the four winless teams (Affreux, Lockdown, Balls Deep and Monstars), all lost by one score this past weekend. Hence you can bet that on any given Sunday, there are no such things as blowouts or easy victories.

CHAOS WIN, CHAOS WIN!

With 1 play left, Balls Deep led Chaos by 3 points. Geoff Comeau, on the last play of the game, decided to throw the ball at his receiver which seemed a bit high so perhaps my guess is that it was suppose to be overthrown but the receiver jumped to attempt to catch the ball but missed the catch and popped it up. Erik Vongsouthi caught the interception and ran it back to the house for the win. The pick six capped off the comeback for the Chaos who were down 28-13 at the half time.

TERMINATED!

The Cobras defeated the Terminators quite easily last Sunday. I promised Frank Grenier an interview if his team would win the game. I am a man of my word so here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tk7-5jr5S6M . As for the Terminators, it is back to the drawing board or the playbook that Gino Di Fazio (Coach/GM/Owner/President/etc) has assigned to each player on the team. From what I understand, there will be a quiz mid-week and a failure will lead to a role of benchwarmer in week 5.

WHO NEEDS HIM?

The Green Machine got the job done without their supposed All-Star QB who, it now has been confirmed, will not be joining the team this season. They defeated the Cowboys who are an above average team. So who is the QB? Mr. Patrice Blouin will assume the role for the remainder of the season. One thing is for sure, the team is happy with the decision and is looking forward to facing another solid contender next week, Chaos!

Three STAR-wars Of The Week

3rd star: Jeff Lyall (Run’n’Wild) was definitely running wild over the Monstars defense. He was 10 of 19 for 98 yards with 2 TDs, he also rushed for 45 yards and 2 rushing TDs.

2nd star: Patrice Blouin (Green Machine) will be the QB for the rest of the season and he got off to a great start, he was 14 of 25 for 132 yards with 6 TDs and 1 INT. He also rushed for 55 yards.

1st star: Alex Lever (Cobras) had an impressive win. He was 16 of 25 for 161 yards and 6 TDs.

TOP GUNS – Part II (Receivers)

Here is a list of the top 5* receivers in Division C (in no particular order):

Jean Francois Trudeau (Cobras) – He possesses good speed, good hands and is counted on to make clutch grabs. Alex Lever has defined him as an aggressive receiver who wants the ball more than anyone on the field. Nickname: The Thunder (or Thundering Trudeau)

Frank Grenier (Cobras) – He doesn’t appear to be the most athletic or fastest receiver however the adage “brains over brawn” is applicable here. He uses his football smarts to get himself open without resorting to speed and has hands like glue! Nickname: The Cobra (Just like a cobra he is sneaky, slick but very deadly)

Patrick Jerome (Triple Sixers) – He is a deep or short threat to any defense. He can torch the opponents down the sidelines or convert short slants into long gains. He has a great ability to adjust for the ball even if it is slightly overthrown and come down with it. Nickname: The Rocket

Andre John (Snookers) – The franchise player of the Snookers is a dominant receiver in Division C. He never had an above average QB on offence but still managed to catch most balls thrown to him. He has height, speed and good hands but not the best route runner. Nickname: Andre The Giant

Anthony Bozzo (Bandits) – He runs good routes, possesses good speed and most important he uses both to make great plays. Similar to Andre John, he never had a great QB throwing to him (until now, so look out) but still managed to make the big time plays. Nickname: The Blazing Bozzo

*I know in last week’s column, I said I would name 10 receivers but it was a typo so tough luck to the rest!

Next week, I’ll look at the top 5 snappers in Division C.

Tip Of The Week

Who here often disagrees with a referee on a call? I believe mostly all of us have at one point or another questioned a decision rendered by a referee. However the worst thing a player can do is question the call in a way that will insult the referee or make him upset. Let’s say Rostyn Castleton (an ideal person for this example) doesn’t agree with a call but decides to get up in the referees face and start saying things like “What the hell is wrong with you? Are you completely stupid? You must be blind!” and so on. We all agree that it is quite frustrating when a referee makes a bad call however you are not helping your situation. If anything, you have made a bad situation worse because you are now on his bad side and maybe have received an OC.

In the history of football (including Madden on gaming consoles) the amount of calls that were overturned are far less than the ones that stood. Therefore you have to be smart. If you disagree with the referee, you must do it in a respectful manner and don’t forget to compliment him once in a while. You can say something like “I don’t agree with the call but hey you’re a great ref so I respect your judgment… I think that was definitely a catch but maybe you are trained better than I am to make this call.” OK maybe I am exaggerating just a tiny bit but you get the idea. If you respect the officials, they will more than likely not keep an eye on you on every play. Last, you can also let the officials know from time to time if you see something that you don’t think is right. For example you can say you think the receiver is jumping offside or the QB is flag guarding or a defender is bumping you on your routes and so forth. Trust me, if you follow my advice it can make a big difference!

Week 5 Review

These are a few of the games that will be fun to watch:

1. Run’n’Wild vs. Balls Deep (4 pm on field 1) – Balls Deep almost had a win this past weekend but came up short whereas Run’n’Wild did get their first win so it will be interesting to see how Geoff Comeau bounces back from last week’s devastating loss

2. Affreux vs. Lockdown (5 pm on field 1) – Both teams are 0-3 and were oh so close to getting their first win last week and thus are in the hunt for that first W in week 5.

3. Flight Of The Concords vs. Bandits (7 pm on field 3) – FOTC will use their quickly-found chemistry to get their 4th win (they are 3-1 with a +/- of negative 13??) but it will be no easy task as they take on Bozzo and the Bandits

4. The Commission vs. Flying Weasels (9 pm on field 1) – The Commission are slowly turning some heads. With the play of Michael Mendell and Thomas Zorko, they should give Flying Weasels a run for their money.

That’s it for this week’s column. Don’t forget to pull me aside if you want you or your team to be video taped and put in my column. I will be walking around most of the evening so look for the man with the beard. As always, I welcome your feedback and welcome any suggestions you might have for my column. Please contact me at [email protected] or via Facebook. Good luck to all this weekend and catch you all next week!
