FPF Recaps are back: Morretti are Some Smooth Criminals, The Heart Will Go Schlong, and Vortex Wipe out the Bees

Here’s the thing, we’re trying something new.  As long as I’ve been with FPF we’ve always tried to innovate and deliver content to our players in new ways.  Balancing delivering the same quality content you’re used to while offering a new array of coverage.  Weekly divisional articles will cover storylines from the divisions you play in.  This will take a look at comings and goings, performances, matchups and results and dig deep into what they mean and describe why they matter given the context of the season.

Recaps will be found in a centralized location where divisional writers, scorekeepers, and contributors and community members will be compensated to recap games they’ve seen.  The idea is with more people covering FPF we’ll get more perspectives, more coverage and a better feel for what’s happening week in and week out.

This will take some time.  Anytime change occurs, it does take some time to adapt and for us to get processes in place.  For that, I thank you for your patience.  If you have any input, let us know.  Also, we’re continually looking for more contributors to write recaps.  If you’ve seen some games and want to flex your analytical skill please let us know.  This is a great way to help us cover the league we all love and help cover your season fees.  So hit us up.

We will continue to update you with regards to the change sin our media presentation as the season goes.  Send us your input and, if you don’t like it, I’ll tell you what I tell my godson when he fake cries “your tears are PEDs to me!”  He’s 4 and has no idea what that means.

4th & Shlong vs. Heart break Kids 39-20

Division 4

by Raff Morelli

In this matchup 4th & Shlong and the Heart Break Kids took to the field determined to come out on top and secure that first win of the season. Heart Break Kids won the coin toss and elected to begin on defense. 4th & Shlong’s quarterback, Michael Caparelli and his offense hit the field for their first drive of the season and threw an unfortunate interception past mid field. The Heart Break Kids offense took advantage of the early turnover and punched their first touchdown in for a 7-0 lead. But Caparelli shook it off and had a standout performance, throwing 6 touchdowns and leading his team to a 39-20 victory. Although their lead didn’t come until the second half as the two teams were all tied up at half time 14-14. Despite the loss, the Heart Break Kids’ quarterback, Evan Nolet, had a decent outing, completing 16 of 29 pass attempts for 142 yards and 3 touchdowns. However, he also had 2 costly interceptions. Both these INT’s came in the second half and from the same defensive player Jordan Lessard. 4th & Shlong capitalized on these turnovers from Lessard and scored 25 points in the second half. The Heart Break Kids receiver Devin Daoust was the best receiver of the night who led the night with 9 catches on 10 targets for 81 yards and 1 touchdown. I also expect Heart Break Kids’ defense to perform much better as the season moves on as they’ve got Zackary Alberts-Gill, who holds the single season record for most sacks with 29!!! It was a competitive game, but in the end, 4th & Shlong’s high powered offensive performance led them to victory.

Week 1 Division 1 féminine

Vortex  31 –  20 Bees

MVP Vortex : Gabrielle Vanier

MVP Bees : Caroline Moquin-Joubert

Green Monster 30 – 21 Stormers

Div 5B

by Tyler Gurberg

Green Monster seem to have found their rhythm early this season, despite rostering many first-time FPF players. This game was decided by Jonah Burgess’ incredible athleticism, who ended three Stormers drives with interceptions and tacking on a couple catches for 37 yards and a TD on offense. On the other side of the ball, Oumar Toure was buzzing. Reeling in 6 catches for 84 yards and three scores on offense, he had just as strong of a game on D, with an interception and two defended passes, one of which easily could have been a second interception. He seems to have a great understanding of defensive positioning, having an impact on nearly every play. Alec Richard-Nantel displayed a rare mix of pocket poise and rushing ability while quarterbacking for the Stormers, but his few mistakes coupled with Burgess’ athleticism ultimately proved too difficult to overcome. Patrick Jazon is a very different style of QB for the Green Monsters. Despite a lack of rushing ability and seeming slightly uncomfortable in the pocket at times, he did a fantastic job of spreading the ball around. 8 different receivers earned a target, and all four of their team’s receiving scores came from different players. As an FPF veteran, I’m sure he will be looking to improve upon his sub-50% completion percentage. Ultimately, this was a battle of two strong teams who will be competing at a high level in division 5B this season.

Green Monster MVP = Jonah Burgess

Stormers MVP = Oumar Toure

Top G’s 30 – Ball Don’t Lie 19

Division 4

by Joey Taylor

In a game where 49 points were scored, defense played a much larger role than you might think. The game started off with a pick 6 by Felix Lafleur on an overthrown pass by QB Charles Tremblay. The next possession did not go much better for Ball Don’t Lie as Tremblay was picked off again on a tightly thrown ball over the middle by Jordan Heppell. The Ball Don’t Lie continued the trend of picks as QB Loic’s first throw of the game was taken to the house by Oliver Dzomo tying up the game. The sloppy play continued with a bad snap going 10 yards over QB Loic’s head on what was looking like a promising drive for Top G’s. Ball Don’t Lie did not make good of the opportunity as they went 3 and out, giving the ball back to Top G’s. After a sack on 1st down by Rene Saint-Fleur, QB Loic threw 2 beautiful passes to Devin O’Conner followed by a TD pass on a corner route by WR Tristian Faucher to take the lead 12-6. Ball Don’t Lie answered back with a long drive, driving the field with short passes and eventually capping off a TD to John Boachie. They converted the extra point to take the lead 13-12. With little time remaining in the 1st half, QB Loic threw his second pick of the game to Khadeem Pierre and QB Charles Tremblay took advantage ending the half with a TD pass to Ralph Perrin making the score 19-12 for Ball Don’t Lie.

This game was a tale of two halves as the 2nd quarter was all Top G’s. Kudos to them for making the second half adjustments. QB Loic thew 3 TD passes, one on a beautiful fade throw to WR Jonathan Bourque, another on a wheel route to Benjamin Desroches, and finally to Williams Desroches on a scramble play. Ball Don’t Lie could not muster anything up in the second half. They had a 4 and out on the goal line that was completely altered by drops. QB Tremblay had no help on the day with WRs dropping a total of 8 balls. His chemistry with WR David Polynice was the only highlight of the day as that seemed to be the only way Ball Don’t Lie moved the ball. The game ended in a score of 30-19 for Top G’s.

Overall, Top G’s look like a fun athletic team with a lot of energy, I look forward to watching them versus some of the more experienced teams in the division. For Ball Don’t Lie, they need to settle down and play their style of football. QB Charles Tremblay throws a beautiful ball and I expect them to win some games in the division. With Tremblay and Polynice playing with the div 3 Greendale Human Beings, I expect to see a lot more of the Danny Aylward playbook as the season goes on.

Greendale Human Beings 33 – Speed Academy 14

Division 3

By Joey Taylor

In a game that featured speed vs. experience, experience came out on top. The first play of the game saw a deep pass from Speed Academy QB Plante that was contested in the air by CB David Polynice that led to a scary looking collision. To the disappointment of Speed Academy who were hollering for a penalty, it was a legal and great play by Polynice. With an offence who loves the deep ball and using their speed, this seemed to have a bigger impact on the game than anyone could of imagined. QB Plante looked rattled on the drive that ended in a pick to the self-proclaimed “Island” Matthew Rupcic.  On O, GHB and QB Danny Aylward did what they do best and milked clock with short passes to snapper Alex Joltopuf (who had an insane 12 catches on the day) and WR Brandon Aylward. The 2-star WRs would account for all 3 of GHB TDs in the first half. For Speed Academy, the highlight of the first half was WR Rabbi Bositampen (who is in the discussion for the fastest player in FPF) taking a 5 yard hook to the house. The score at half was 21-7 GHB.

The second half started with a defensive stop by Speed Academy on 4th down with QB Aylward targeting his brother Brandon to no avail. Speed Academy looked to make it a game with a couple of short completions until QB Plante was intercepted by Polynice (one of his 2 interceptions on the night). That interception sealed the deal as Danny connected with new WR Justin Lerner for 2 second half scores ending the game by mercy rule with 5 plays left 33 – 14 for Greendale.

Overall, Greendale Human Beings look like a real contender in D3 with a close win vs Preach and blowout victory vs a fast Speed Academy team. If Danny can use his short game to Brandon and Alex to open up his other receivers in David, Justin, Charles and Matthew, the sky is the limit. As for Speed Academy, they will be fine. The talent alone of Emile Plante, Jimmy Marneris, Rabbi Bositampen, and star rusher Jessica Bositampen will be enough to carry this team to a 500 record and playoff appearance.

Moretti Crime Family vs Touch Foot 450
Division 2
by Brent Bodkin

After edging Terror Squad (33-32) in Week 1, Joey Taylor and company kept up their winning ways with a blowout victory over Touch Foot 450 Wednesday night in Laval.

Both teams have speed, but only one had execution, as the Moretti Crime Family marched their way up and down the field on multiple drives as Quarterback Joey Taylor, made the Touch Foot 450 defense pick their poison as he connected on big gains in both the short and long passing game to Receivers Brandon Aylward, Rocco Christiano, and Domenic Benevento.

The MCF defense was just as lethal as they smothered their opponent’s offense by eliminating the deep passing game. Lined up a Rusher, Aylward picked up three sacks, and the squad also got an interception from Benevento. Defenders Marco Bertoldi, Matthew Rupcic, and Danny D’Amour provided solid coverage all game long, and nearly picked off several passes.

The one positive for Touch Foot 450, was their ability to match the aggressiveness of their opponents on the defensive side of the ball, as they were able to pick off Taylor twice, highlighted by Jeanslee Alexis, who ran his INT back to the house.

Score: Moretti Crime Family (36-8)

Mangoose vs Arouch
Division 3
By Brent Bodkin

This is another game where the defense played a huge role as Mangoose used three big defensive stands to beat Arouch Monday night in St. Laurent.

Mangoose wasted little time letting their defense set the tone, as they were able to keep their opponents out of the endzone on their first possession of the game, even though Arouch found themselves sitting at first and goal inside the five-yard line.

The Mangoose offense would turn that stop into points, as QB Nicolas Schaefer would connect with Receiver James Drysdale for a 33-yard touchdown two plays later to give the team their first lead of the game.

The momentum and big plays continued for Mangoose, as they were able to generate another turnover, this time via an interception by Drysdale. The team’s offense would turn the extra possession into points as well, as Schaefer, would find Receiver Thomas Coutu for a 12-yard score.

Arouch, was able to narrow the lead, as QB Eric Lalonde was able to find Receivers Simon Losier and Thomas Legault for touchdowns, but another INT by Drysdale, along with a second TD by Coutu, and one by Charles Fontaine, put the game out of reach.

Score: Mangoose (26-12)

Wide Open Bar vs Cunning Stunts
Division 4
By Brent Bodkin

Cunning Stunts Quarterback Stephen Casey came out and delivered a solid outing in his team’s win over Wide Open Bar, as the former Champlain Cavaliers Coach threw for six touchdowns, five of which went to different receivers.

The biggest beneficiary of his performance was Receiver Corey Williams, who was a last-minute addition to the team, as the former Bishop’s Gaiter had a game-high eight catches and 114 yards to go along with a touchdown.

In the one and only season I played in the FPF Cup, Jean Lussier was my Quarterback. While he might not possess the greatest deep ball, he is a smart QB who knows how to call a good game. Those smarts were on display Monday in St. Laurent, as he found creative ways to get the ball in the hands of his brother Louis Lussier multiple times throughout the game. After initially relying on the short passer, the QB elected to work the intermediate as well, which then opened up the deep ball on occasion, which saw the duo complete on a 41-yard pass that went for a score in the first half.

When the Cunning Stunts defense started rolling their coverage to Wide Receiver, Lussier found another target in Édouard Leroux, who did a lot of damage on underneath routes.

The inability to get stops on defense and maintain a consistent rush especially in the redzone is what killed Wide Open Bar, as Casey had too much time to throw. On at least two touchdowns, the QB had time to avoid the Rusher and roll out to one side and sometimes another, before lofting a ball across his body to the other side of the endzone.

Score: Cunning Stunts (38-26)

Cavaliers vs Dream Killers
Women’s 2
By Brent Bodkin

For the second week in a row, the Cavs rolled out a roster big enough to field an entire offense and defense. After having 12 players last week, the squad was up to 14 last Sunday at Loyola.

The team was able to unleash their duo Quarterback system with Kalliopi Kaminaris and Juliette Beauvais. The move proved to be successful once again, as they were able to pull off a second half comeback victory by knocking-off the Dream Killers with a game-winning touchdown by Receiver Charlotte Grimmel, with two plays remaining.

The winning score was set up by several big plays not only by Grimmel, who caught a game-high eight catches for 114 yards and two touchdowns, (She can ball), but also by teammate Emmy-Frédérique Summerside.

The loss was heartbreaking for the Dream Killers, as the team played a good game. The future is bright for this squad, as they have speed, playmakers, athleticism, and a desire to get better. It also doesn’t hurt that they have two-way standout Marie-Pier Adam (speaking of ballers) who had a whale of a game with a Week 2 Co-Ed best three interceptions, and five grabs for 92 yards as well as a touchdown as a Receiver.

The Dream Killers have a chance to get their first win of the year, as they take on a fellow (0-2) team in Les P’tites Miettes, tomorrow night at Loyola. Let’s see how they respond.

Score: Cavaliers (13-12)
