Fourth-and-Goal (Div C) – Week 4

I have to admit, I’m impressed with Division C this year. There are a lot of strong teams, yes. But I get the impression that the playoffs are going to be a dogfight, due to the talent spread out amongst the different teams. However, we still have 6 more weeks to cover before we get there!

FPF Fantasy Football Picks – Class of Spring 2012

Last season in Week 4, I had been thinking – a dangerous pastime indeed. I imagined how fun it would be if we had our own FPF fantasy pool. As such, I went about putting together a team of 6 FPF players in Division C that I felt would do well on a football pool. My rules were as followed:

A)    Higher division players are not allowed.

B)    Two-way players only – you want players performing for you on both sides of the ball.

C)    There are other imaginary people participating in this imaginary pool. So I have to pick under-the-radar players that I KNOW will perform.

I had a lot of fun with this; it was a fun hypothetical exercise, and it was also a shout-out to some of the consistent players in the division who don’t normally get a lot of press. As such, I figured that I’d give it another go this season, coming up with a team who would not only make you look good in the fantasy pool, but who could also likely beat most of the teams in Division C somewhat soundly should they play together.

Without further ado, here are my 6 brand-new picks for this season:

Phil Cutler, KGP Champs (QB, S)

One of the few QBs who also play defense well, Phil has been a consistent staple on a somewhat inconsistent team throughout the years. Originally a run-first quarterback, an injury in many seasons past somewhat changed his game. His deep ball is one of the best, hands down. Often heralded for his strengths at QB, his defensive talents often go under the radar. An all-star linebacker, Phil has a knack for being in the right place at the right time on D.

Alexandre Pereda, Patriotes (C, MLB)

Pereda is one of the few snappers in Division C who is able to effectively play both sides of the ball. Never missing a tackle, Alexandre is able to cover a whole lot of ground and give you huge tackle stats (once boasted a 50 tackle season!). Having consistent stats on offense as well, Alex also contributes to the stat sheet subtly as well. Having, quite possibly, the best snap in all of Division C, any QB lining up behind Alex will have plenty of time to make the perfect read – the snaps cover a huge amount of distance in no time.

Jacob Peterson, The Incredibles (WR, CB)

The player you’d have the most difficulty drafting into your FPF pool, just because of how popular he’s become in the last few seasons. Making catches look effortless, Jacob can leave you in the dust at a moment’s notice. Furthermore, he has the ability to play anywhere on defense. Able to rush or play safety at the drop of a hat, Jacob would benefit your pool by giving you a variety of stats.

Etienne Guilmain, Flight of the Conchords (WR, CB)

Shifty and smart, Champ is another versatile player on this list. On a team that sometimes underperforms, Etienne’s play is something that you can set your watch to. With a lot of football smarts, and the ability to make devastating cuts, your stats would sure be padded if you picked Etienne to be part of your FPF pool roster.

Samuel Drapeau, Prestige World Wide (SB, S)

A relative newcomer to the FPF scene, Drapeau’s stats certainly don’t appear to be so. With his size, he towers over defenders and makes receptions look like a breeze. Being able to limit a QB’s reads, and pick off a ball with ease, he’s just as solid a choice on defense as he is on offense. Despite being on a team loaded with talent, Drapeau is still able to stand out and put up fantastic stats.

P-A Beausejour, French Toast Mafia FFC (SB, R)

It’s incredible to see just how much P-A gets the ball. P-A runs his routes like they were nothing, yet consistently is able to find himself outside of coverage. He’s a big man who is able to limit the reads of opposing QBs when he rushes, and sacks and PD’s can come just as easily.

Power Rankings

Without a doubt, these have been the hardest Power Rankings to do in a while. My big issue is that all 10 of these teams are really, really solid. A numerical comparison doesn’t really do them justice, because there’s so little difference between the top of the list and the bottom. Essentially: if you’re on the list of 10, you’re really good. That’s all that you need to know.

1: Prestige World Wide – While not happy with a tie on their record, they should still coast through the season nicely.

2: Hall of Famers – They sent me fan mail – they get to stay at number 2. Being undefeated is certainly a factor as well.

3: Daron Basmadjian Fan Club – They know how to win championships; they play like the pros of the jerseys that they wear.

4: The Commission – I felt it was necessary to move them to fourth place. They have less than 6 touchdowns scored against them all season.

5: Monstars – A team that has ALSO only let in less than 6 touchdowns scored on them. Let’s see them step up this week for a real challenge.

6: Predators – They may actually have too much talent. If they can arrange their shift changes between who plays O and who plays D, they should do fantastically in their sophomore season.

7: Broccasion – Came through when it counted in a close game. On paper, they’re better than last season. Now they just need to play to that potential.

8: Flight of the Conchords – It seems like Spring is their season to shine, and this season is definitely the one for them. Let’s see if they can keep up the consistency.

9: The Incredibles – Looks like Daniele and the Incredibles have finally adjusted to the change. Strong games to follow.

10: Sphinx – A tough one point loss drops them a notch in the rankings. However, they should continue doing what they do best.

Individual Awards

Here are, so far and in my opinion, the players to beat and the frontrunners for the individual awards.

Quarterback of the Year: Alex Lever (Prestige World Wide)

Receiver of the Year: Adam Crystal (Hall of Famers)

Defensive Player of the Year: Jarred Paperman (Hall of Famers)

Two-Way Player of the Year: Trevor Ruffner (Favre Dollar Footlongs)

Quick Picks

As usual, picks in bold. If these picks ever look doubtful to you, feel free to bring up Simon Dagenais’ article, and then look back at mine. They suddenly don’t look so bad, do they?

Sphinx vs. Mustangs du Gridiron: In my opinion, Sphinx have a greater sense of unity and teamwork.

Pump & Ditch vs. Favre Dollar Footlongs: Apparently, I’m one of the few who has faith in Vinny Gualano and his loaded roster. Look for Pump & Ditch to take this one.

Monstars vs. Predators: Only one of these two teams will remain undefeated. Predators are that team.

Hall of Famers vs. Rude Bwoys : Smolar and co. have been playing their best football yet, and are riding a high. Look for the Hall of Famers to live up to their namesake.

Prestige World Wide vs. The Incredibles: I’m hoping that The Incredibles make me look like a genius for picking them to win.

Formerly Teamless vs. Eagles: N/A

Mongoose vs. KGP Champs : The former Division 4 champs don’t look the same at all. Look for KGP Champs to get back to over .500.

Like Our TDs vs. Silent Assassins : With the name and color change, Like Our TDs are looking and playing like a solid team.

Pap N’ Co vs. Ninja Turtles : Pap N’ Co are looking fantastic under Myles Gibbon. Look for this winning trend to continue.

Broccasion vs. The Commission: The Commission’s stout defense might just fluster Marco and co.

Jewish Cucumbers vs. Flight of the Conchords: Flight of the Conchords have too much going for them at this stage in the game.

French Toast Mafia FFC vs. Real Deal: French Toast Mafia FFC need to springboard back into their old ways. They also look good with Savoiz-Séguin at receiver.

Le Zoo vs. X-Men: Le Zoo need a win badly. This’ll be the week that they get it.

Daron Basmadjian Fan Club vs. Patriotes: Daron Basmadjian Fan Club may prove too much for the hurting Patriotes.

If you only read one article this season (which doesn’t make sense because you just finished this one) then make sure that you tune in next week as I write up my legendary Week 5 article recapping all 28 teams in the division. Until then, I can be reached at [email protected]
