Fourth-and-Goal (Div 4) – Week 7

It’s starting to wind down for some of you. Players have the knowledge that your days are numbered, that there are only a few games left. Or, it could be just picking up. In a position where every game counts, you want to put yourselves in a position where you want to win from here all the way until the -finals.

The last three weeks are CRUCIAL. There’s a reason that FPF keeps the bulk of the divisional games for last; it’s the right kind of competition. The drive to win, the hint of desperation for some… every play is crucial. You want to start winning from here on out, whether you’re on the outside looking in, or on the top and trying to hold it. So, remember this. Although we’re in Week 8, playoffs start NOW.

The Great Race

Speaking of playoffs, here’s the breakdown! My speculations from early on in the season seem to be coming to fruition; the powerhouses seem to be established in Conference A, and the race for Conference B is TIGHT. An eight-way tie for the last playoff spot? I know that we say that anything can happen in FPF, but this is really interesting. Goes without saying that these
are subject to change depending on wins and losses.

The Other Race

I’m going to throw around my thoughts and opinions on who the frontrunners are for the players of the year. It’s important to note that A) I’m not the deciding factor in who the final choice is {not only is it almost purely stat-based, I have no say in the matter} and B) higher division players who play the position full-time are not eligible. Here are my choices for the players to beat thus far:

Quarterback of the Year: Greg Stern

Stern has been putting up fantastic numbers. His completion ratio, touchdowns and INTs (or lack thereof) have put him into elite status, more so than in the past. He’s a solid contributor to his team’s undefeated status, and he’s definitely a leader on the squad.
{Other candidates: Pat Lefebvre, Edward Shoshan, Daniel Lazzara}

Receiver of the Year: Jacob Peterson

Peterson is the perfect complement to Stern (well, once we get to the defensive player, we can get into Three Musketeers references) in addition to an incredible (pun intended?) receiver. He runs deep routes effortlessly, and can shed a defender at a moment’s notice.
{Other candidates: Patrick St-Amand, Zach Jauniaux, Marc-Antoine Viens}

Defensive Player of the Year: Marco Bertoldi

Rounding off the Incredibles trifecta is Bertoldi, the mix of speed and physicality. He’s become an interception machine this season, and is shutting down players by shutting down opposing QBs’ reads. He keeps quiet, and lets his play do the talking.
{Other candidates: Jacob Peterson, Dean Demetriou, Julien Paiement}

Two-Way Player of the Year: Dean Demetriou

I’d give it to him mostly because he doesn’t play for The Incredibles (I kid, I kid.) In all seriousness, Dean flourishes at the quarterback, receiver and safety position. So not a two-way, but a three-way player? Dean contributes to his team wherever he needs them; an amazing asset.
{Other candidates: Jacob Peterson, Marco Bertoldi, Timothy Godber}

Random Thoughts

Is it a typo on the site that Julien Paiement had a 9 sack game? Beast mode…
– The Incredibles are dominating the individual awards this far AND are undefeated? Leave something for the rest of us, please.
– Smokin’ Aces are taking me completely by surprise. Let’s see if they’re for real this week.
– Sphinx and Patriotes really stepped up and won some must-win games despite their inconsistencies. Clutch.

Come see me at the fields this week. I’ll be live-tweeting some games (likely Lachine and Loyola.) I’ve largely stayed away from plugging my own twitter, but since I’m live-tweeting games, it would probably interest those in the division. So feel free to give me a follow at @gmkole44 and I’ll keep your weekend entertaining if you can’t make it to the games.
