Food for Thought (Div 3) – Week 14

That’s it. Winter 2012 is over. For the next four weeks I will be back in hibernation, grovelling over my football-less predicament. However, before I disappear from the FPF media scene, I wanted to take a look at how this tremendous season ended.

After a game in which offenses surpassed defenses, SWAT finally got to raise their first championship trophy as a team. While I predicted VPC to take this one by a very small margin, I have to admit that I did not anticipate their defense to perform so poorly. Or maybe it was Nathan Thompson who outsmarted them. I’m not sure anymore. All I now is that Michael Malinaric and Shawn Haney had monster games.

Haney, especially, made some truly fantastic catches in what would have normally been pretty hermetic coverage by Louis Richard. After having been the recipient of many a mockery, it must have felt good for the veteran receiver to show the FPF world that he can still dish it out when it counts.

For his part, Nathan Thompson took advantage of VPC’s weaker defense and stayed away from Robbie Robinson to capture his first championship as well as the Playoff MVP award.

While offense was the key to SWAT’s victory, the game’s turning point came on defense when Rashawn Perry, who was having a very quiet game, “pick-sixed” Robbie Robinson to give his team a two score lead at the end of the first half. This was the first and only time VPC gave up a defensive TD this season…

For VPC, their second finals loss in two years is obviously hard to swallow. In my humble opinion, they need to add a key player on defense if they wish to take that last step and secure a first championship for the franchise.

Now, there is one last FPF rendez-vous before we delve into the Spring season preparations: the All-Star game!

Just like we promised, this year’s all-stars will be facing off against the D3 champions SWAT on Sunday the 22nd in Lachine.

See you in four weeks!
