Food Foor Thought (Div B) – Week 2

As I was sipping on a freshly cracked coconut wondering which FPF analyst or writer is the closest to a championship (it’s Andrew D’Anna and the Lockdown if you ask me…), I stumbled upon what would soon become a 49 comment post on our favourite Facebook group’s wall. It appears that someone in need of a controversy decided to stir the proverbial cauldron of love. Jason Prince (not to divulge any names) took it upon himself to make the week nine S.W.A.T. vs Evolution matchup the Game of the Week. Here is the original post in case you are not yet 2.0 certified:

“Rick Cummins, I think you need to register yourself in Defensive schooling….You couldn’t cover a baby with a blanket.”

All this after a 50-24 trouncing of Evolution by S.W.A.T. in which “Princess” managed over a 100 yards and 3 TDs including a pick 6…. Ouch!

In matters totally unrelated to this one, one of my confidential informants (let’s call him the breewer) successfully tracked down Mr. Two-Way Player of the year himself, Marc Champagnie. The MTL’s Finest member seems to have pulled a Michael Jordan as he is now the leadoff hitter and center fielder of a lower calibre softball team. How did he do in his last game? 2 for 3 with a triple and a walk… Not bad for a football player!

All you gotta do is put it in the pocket…

While Tony Tabet has shown in the past he can throw punches with the best of them, I may have given him a bit too much credit for his team’s great start. Raffi Kozanian is establishing himself as a premier receiver and his 201 yards over two games attest to his excellent play. His main attributes are his speed and nimbleness which enable him to elude opposing DBs and run crisp routes into open territory. However, it would be unfair to bestow all the credit on the Snookers’ offense. Their defence has been stellar showing 4 INTs and 9 PD, the highest combined total out of any team. Actually, the only dirt to be cleaned is Tony Tabet’s interception total. But when a team wins despite their QB throwing two or more picks per game, hats should come off and be tipped.

<< Jamais 2 sans 3? >>

Deep under the radar, Étienne Chauvin is strolling along, a 62.5% completion percentage in one hand and a 111.3 QB rating in the other. Not running as much as he used to in past seasons, Chauvin is showing that his arm belongs in the higher divisions. With Sébastien Pereda and Alex Pereda focusing on defense, Mathieu Bélanger took it upon himself to make Chauvin look his best. With a spectacular catch here, a graceful juke there and even some timely PDs in the end zone, Bélanger has really been the MVP for this squad thus far. And you know what the worst is? Their opponents still don’t take them seriously.

Is someone pressing the “B” button?

I’m awfully sorry to break it to Rehan and his buddies, but this forced Evolution is just not working so far. After the total success that the Darkhorses mash-up proved to be last season, it doesn’t appear like a repeat is possible. Right now their team looks like an undisciplined batter going for the homerun. What they need to do is start hitting for contact and concentrate on their fielding; in other words, figure out what’s wrong with their defensive coverage. They really need a rebound game to get things going and Broccasion might just be the team that gets them rolling.

On the corner of Kelly and McComber

Let’s face it; Scott Kelly has been awful in his first two outings. With a completion percentage below 40, he should be thankful that his great arm bailed him out when he needed it the most. The good news for PSE is that the rest of the team is ready to go. With their rusher Mather Warsame  grounded (!), the Elite decided to call upon a household name to replace him in Brandon Pierre. Was this a one time fix or will Pierre be back as a regular? Only time will tell. Meanwhile, Alex Grace and Nigel Thomas are showing they can play out of division 5. With Anthony McComber getting his paws on the ball more often than not and the rest of the team chipping in, the Elite might only need Scott Kelly to be average to get their wins.

For a special occasion

Broccasion are in desperate need for some offensive depth and may be looking to add a new “bro” to their group (I hear they are having discussions with Karim Binette). With a lot of youth and not too much experience outside of what Steve Hodhod provides, Broccasion seem to be struggling to adjust to the different defensive looks thrown their way. Yes, Kristian Cerantola runs fast. Yes, he can do some heavy damage with his feet. However, he needs to throw at least every two plays and he isn’t showing that he can distribute the ball efficiently to his troops. With such standouts as Kyle Lebofsky and Guillaume De Palma, this team has no business at the back of the pack. Sadly, if they don’t add that key element and turn things around drastically, they might never get rid of that double digit power ranking spot.

Power Rankings

These rankings are based not only on record, but also on performance and team overall talent. It is a good way to see who is hot and who is not.

1. Big TDs (2-0): They only beat the top dog and added a certain Matthew Norzil to their roster. Not newsworthy at all…

2. Snookers (2-0): They allowed the least point so far and have arguably the best defensive corps in Division B.

3. Trojans (1-1): After a night of wild partying and some outdoor sporting events during the day, some of their troops were a little winded. They still have the best QB.

4. Patriotes (2-0): The underdog of underdogs, the Pats will try to continue their winning streak against the physical Park Street Elite. A definite make or break game.

5. Terror Squad (1-1): After an uncharacteristic performance by Tam Vilaydeth after a long outdoor tournament (1 rush for 1 yard), look for Terror Squad’s QB to be hungry for some rushing yards this weekend.

6. S.W.A.T. (1-1): If Shawn Haney can repeat last week’s exploits and Jason Prince back up his trash talk, this S.W.A.T. team just might be better than we thought.

7. Park Street Elite (1-1): Look out for Scott Kelly to get out of his slump. I have a feeling the whole complex will shake when he does.

8. Prestige World Wide (0-2): The afro is back! Finally some good news for Prestige.

9. Evolution (0-2): It’s now or never for them. A loss to Broccasion might actually kill their playoff chances.

10. Broccasion (0-2): They will be facing a desperate Evolution team. They will need to want it even more…
