First Annual FPF Cup Breakdown

The Inaugural FPF Cup Fall season is all set to kickoff on Tuesday, September 5th! 40 teams are divided into two tiers of twenty. Both tiers then have five opening round groups of four teams.

Each team has a set cap for the FPF Cup; they cannot surpass that total at any point during the entire tournament. This number is calculated by using the sum of offensive and defensive team ratings (using the top six ratings on each side of the ball, as always)- plus an additional 10 points to give teams some wiggle room.

Here are the rankings for all the teams in the tournament, along with their set cap.

The opening round robin, which we’ve named the Preliminary Round, features three weeks of games, one against each of the other teams in a team’s group.

Here is how the Preliminary Round groups were set up based on team rankings. (To see the teams in each group, see your respective TIER overview page)

Teams can earn up to 6 traditional points (2 for each win) after the three games. In addition, due to the unavoidable disparity between some of the teams in the same group, we will be incorporating a spread for all games in the opening round. The spread is created by calculating the gap between two opponents and dividing it by ten and rounding up to the next 0.5. The team who “covers the spread” in each game will receive one bonus point that will be incorporated into the next round’s standings (Qualification Round).

Example of the spread: Team A cap is 1025, Team B is 905, the gap is 120 points (divided by ten). Team A is thus favored by 12.5 points.

Once all the Preliminary Round games are played and the opening round standings are complete, we split teams up into new groups, for a second round robin; the Qualification Round, assembles the five teams that finished in the same position in the Preliminary Round standings, into the same group. They are then seeded within those groups based on the amount of points they earned in the Preliminary Round and then by their Points Allowed and then Point differential.

We expect very tight matchups in this round as the pools are much more balanced!

Here is a breakdown of the Qualification Round pools:

Teams will play five games in the Preliminary Round. The four final games will feature matchups against the other four teams in your group. The first game each team plays will be a cross-over matchup against the team holding the same seed in the adjacent group (pairings listed in table below) *

The standings reset in the second round, except for any bonus points earned in the Preliminary Round, by covering the spread, which carry over to the Qualification Round standings. Teams who go 5-0 in the Qualification Round games can earn up to 10 points in traditional fashion (2 points per win). As a result, a team can have a maximum of 13 points in the Qualification Round standings.

*Note that if the equal seeds in the adjacent pools were in the same Preliminary Round Group, and have already faced off, the next closest seeds will swap.

Example: Top seeded 1st place team and top seeded 2nd place team were both in Group B of the Preliminary Round, and thus have already played. Top seeded 1st place team would play 2nd seeded 2nd place team and vice versa, to avoid a repeated game.
