Finals Time in Coed and Women’s Division!

The finals are finally here in Coed and the Women’s division! After a season of ups and downs, this is what we have all been waiting for. If anyone is wondering why this article took so long to get out, I would refer you to the Vila team. They played their semifinal with an illegal roster. They had multiple 15 year old players playing under fake names. All in all, they cheated and were forced to forfeit. However, this was discovered later in the week which forced me to restart part of my particle.

Enough said about Villa, let’s take a look at our six finalists and how they made it to the championship.

Kiss My Outlaws – Coed 1

Road to the Finals: Kiss My Outlaws finished first in the division with a 7-3 record. They rode a high scoring offence all the way to the finals. Securing the top seed gave them a bye through to the semifinals. After leading the division with an average of over 35 points scored a game, they hung 40 points on Justice League in a well rounded performance. Stephen Harripersaud had the offence rolling. He was just about perfect and completed 20 of his 25 attempted passes for 234 yards and a score. While he did not throw an interception, he was forced to punt the ball once which is definitely something Harripersaud is not a fan of doing. However, punting speaks to the confidence that he has in his defence. That confidence proved to be well founded since they picked off Sara Parker three times in this game. This game was flipped on its head when KMO changed rushers. After Joey Notaro rushed for the first three plays, Sanders Armand came in as the rusher. Armand is an entirely different athlete. While Notaro is quick and agile Armand is imposing and far better at getting in passing lanes. On the first play Armand rushed Parker panicked and sailed on a pass which Alexi Dubois intercepted. From there on, Parker continued to struggle against the taller rusher which led to Joey Notaro and Kevin Donnet both getting interceptions.

Strengths:

  • Offence: While this is an extremely general strength, it is simply true. Kiss My Outlaws have the most points scored in the division with over 35 a game and when you look at their receiving corps it is easy to understand why. Joey Notaro leads this team in just about every single receiving category. His speed and ability to turn a short hook into a huge play is game breaking. However, if you are too worried about taking Notaro away you will forget that this team has other threats like Isiah Allard and Luis Begin. Both of them are nightmare matchups because of their ability to highpoint the ball.
  • Ballhawks: Kiss My Outlaws have a loaded secondary. In Coed 1 so many games come down to a single score and are won on the turnover battle. The fact that this team has 15 interceptions on the 15 is impressive. Apart form those 15 they also had three picks in the semis. This is a team that knows how to create turnovers and when you have a QB like Harripersaud who rarely turns the ball over, that makes for a deadly combination.

Weakness:

  • Female Players: The most important thing that you need out of a player is for them to show up and unfortunately that is not something that Kiss My Outlaws will be getting out of their female players in the finals. With Abigail Cockerton still injured and Brianna Keeley out of town for a wedding, Erica Dubois is the only eligible female player on this roster which means that KMO will be playing 5vs6 for the whole match.

Les Petits Phoques

Road to the Championship: Les Petits Phoques did not have as straight forward a path to the finals. They finished as the three seed and were forced to play Fast Not Furious in the quarterfinals in a game that they were extremely lucky to win. They only won that one because FnF threw a costly last minute interception. In the semis, LPP ratcheted up their game. Lefort totalled over 250 yards of offence and seven touchdowns. He did a fantastic job of spreading the ball and kept the opposing defence on their toes. Defensively, Alexis Ferrand did what he has been doing all season. He picked off EZFun twice and returned one of those picks for a score. If there is something that LPP could improve upon from this semifinal outing, it is spreading the ball to their female players. Charlie Brière-Couture was the only female player with a target. They will need to exploit all of their receivers if they want to win the finals.

Strengths:

  • Speed: Every single player on this Les Petits Phoques roster is an exceptionally fast athlete. For starters, Dom Lefort is one of the shiftiest quarterbacks in all of FPF. His low center of gravity allows him to start and stop on a dime. The rest of this receiving core is also shifty and fast. They have the ability of being able to burn anyone that tries to play man coverage versus them.
  • Improvisation: This LPP offence relies on Dom Lefort buying extra time in the pocket. As long as he can dance around and make the rusher miss LPP are practically unstoppable. LPP’s receivers are also well versed in the scramble drill. While this is their first season in Coed, they have played together before in other divisions and leagues so they know exactly where Lefort wants them to be when he is buying time.

Weakness:

  • Size: The biggest player on this team is their rusher, Vincent Granata. Apart from him I do not think that there is a single player on this roster that has cracked the 6foot marker. When you are going up against the like of Isiah Allard, Luis Begin and Sanders Armand that lack of height can be severely exposed.

Kiss My End Zone

Road to the Championship: Kiss My End Zone had an impressive regular season. They finished with an unbeaten record of 9-0-1. As if that was not enough, they also led the division with 371 points scored and had the second least points conceded with 163. All in all, they combined for an overall +/- of +208 which is just about unheard of in FPF. As the top seed in the division they got a bye directly into the semifinals where a matchup with Sneaky Snakes was waiting for them. While they were widely expected to crush the Snakes, that game got off to a very shaky start. Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo threw his first interception of the season and turned the ball over on downs all in the first half. Thanks to a TD on the second to last play to Joey Notaro and a successful 2 point convert, they were able to escape the first half with a score of 14-14. In the second half they took off flying. They scored 26 points compared to Sneaky Snakes’ 8. Erican Dubois singlehandedly turned the tides in this match with a beautiful touchdown grab on fourth down and an interception just a few plays later.

Strengths:

  • Firepower: Kiss My End Zone led all Coed 2 teams with just 371 points scored during the regular season. That is an average of over six touchdowns scored per game. The firepower of this team all starts at the quarterback position with Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo who had a regular season for the ages. He passed for 51 TDs without throwing a single interception. It is crazy to think that he was not even supposed to be this team’s quarterback this year and has just been filling in for an injured Alex Noel. This team’s receiving corps should have people worried too. The combination of James Drysdale, Joey Notaro and Alexi Dubois is a fearsome receiving corps.
  • Depth: What makes KMEZ’s offence even harder hard to stop is their depth. There is not one main target who you can take away which will result in their offence grinding to a halt. Alexi Dubois (aka me) led this team in receiving yards during the regular season, but he is far from being the main threat on this team. James Drysdale has the speed and athleticism to beat you in any which way and Alex Laroche has some of the most reliable hands in the division. Even if you manage to take those three options away, you still have Erica Dubois and Lory Ouellette to deal with who have both quietly amassed some very impressive stats.

Weakness:

  • Mental mistakes: This team can be their own worst enemy and the first half of their game versus Sneaky Snakes proves that. This is a team that should have been able to put Sneaky Snakes to bed. However, Ignacio Valdes Manzanedo made a series of uncharacteristic mistakes and their defence struggled which led them to finishing the first half tied.

3HUNNAS

Road to the Championship: The only team with a better defence than Kiss My End Zone is 3HUNNAS. They led Coed 2 with just 158 points conceded. That stingy defence was on show in the quarterfinals when they held Gorillas to just six points. In the semifinals, it was their offence that won them the game. Backup quarterback Marc Antoine Martin had a phenomenal game. He passed for nearly 200 yards and four scores and added another 77 rushing yards and a score to that total with his legs. While they were missing the talented Nykolas Pierre-Masse in this game, they made up for it by spreading the ball. Michael Lafleur led his team with five catches for 84 yards and a score. If there is something this team can improve on, it is contributions from Reka Sivasubramaniyam. She is one of the most athletically gifted snappers in this division and the fact that she just has 3 targets in the semis is criminal.

Strengths:

  • Rusher: The best way to describe Carlo Costa is fast. He gets to the quarterback quick than any other rusher in Coed 2. While Iggy does not love buying extra time in the pocket he buys the most time on third and fourth down. If Costa can turn one of those fourth down into a turnover on downs instead of a first down that could be the play that decides this game.
  • Depth: This 3HUNNAS team has one of the biggest rosters you will ever see. They have 14 players that are eligible to play in this game which is nearly twice as many as KMEZ have. What that means is that they will be well rested and will be able to cater their lineup depending on the situation. They can bring out bigger bodies for red zone situations and pull out the speed package when they are trying to stretch the field

Weakness:

  • Depth: Depth is also 3HUNNAS biggest weakness. While a huge roster might be an asset in some situations, it also means that you best players are seeing less of the field and that players are getting cold between reps. There is a reason that most teams in FPF have 8 or 9 players and 3H might realize it in this final.

Les P’tites Miettes

Road to the Finals: Simply put, ask Gino Di Fazio. In a move that can only be described as both cowardly and dishonest he fielded an illegal roster in the semis which handed Les P’tites Miettes the forfeit victory.

Strenghts:

  • Secondary: The depth that this team has in their secondary is absolutely phenomenal. Rachel Shea and Mélisande Guertin have both been turnover machines this season. They have six interceptions a piece. In total, this team has 21 pick in eight games which is absolutely staggering. When you combine that with the fact that they are facing the turnover prone Alyson Sobol, the secondary could be a difference maker for LPM.
  • Receiving depth: If you look at most teams in the Women’s division, they will have one dominant receiver. That is not the case for LPM. They have five different receivers who can all make you hurt. What that means is that they do a fantastic job at keeping their opponents guessing.

Weakness:

  • Rushing: This team only has four sacks all season. Yes, that is less than half a sack a game. Even though quarterbacks cannot run in the women’s division, that does not mean that rushers are not important. Limiting time and space in the pocket is still key and that is not something that LPM have been able to do this season.

Red Nation

Road to the Finals: Red Nation were not lucky enough to be gifted a spot in the finals. Instead, they had to win over Strangers to make it to the finals. They took care of Strangers in convincing fashion with a 25-14 win. Unsurprisingly Geraldine Cabillo-Abante and Rachelle Vallieres were the two stars of that win for Red Nation. Cabillo-Abante led the team in receiving yards with 94 while Vallieres led the team in touchdowns with three. At quarterback, Allyson Sobol did just enough to lead her team to victory in this one but did not look impressive. Despite throwing for 185 yards and four scores, she threw three picks. Simply put, throwing throwing three interceptions is not something you can allow yourself to do in an FPF final.

Strenghts:

  • Geraldine Cabillo-Abante: This is the first time that I have ever listed a single player as a strength, however Geraldine Cabillo-Abante is no ordinary player. She led all receivers with nearly 600 receiving yards and had well over 100 more yards than anyone else in this division. LPM will need to come into this game with a plan to slow down Cabillo-Abante becasue otherwise this one could get messy in a hurry.
  • Defence: This Red Nation defence is absolutely fearsome. On one hand you have Rachelle Vallieres who leads the division with 14 interceptions, eight of which she has returned for scores. On the other hand, you have Jenne Araujo who has been the best rusher in the Women’s division. This defence has weapons that can flip a game on its head at every level.

Weakness:

  • Turnovers: Allyson Sobol has struggled with the turnover big this season. While she has thrown thirteen interceptions that is not what worries me most. Her interceptions seem to come in bunches. She either throws three picks or none. In other words, if we get no-INT Sobol RN are flying high in this one whereas if we get 3-INT Sobol, this game could be over before it even starts.

Semifinals Team of the Week

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. The team of the week will be compromised of players from Coed 1, Coed 2 and the Women’s division. Only stats will be considered when choosing players for the team of the week. That means 100 receiving yards in Coed 1 is equivalent to 100 receiving yards in Coed 2. In the spirit of the Coed division, every team of the week will have a minimum of two female players on the offensive and defensive team.

Offence

Quarterback: Dom Lefort (Les Petits Phoques) 19 completions, 264 total yards, 7 total TDs, 1 INT

Receiver: Geraldine Cabillo-Abante (Red Natio) 8 receptions, 94 yards, 1 TDs

Receiver: Emilie Keiya Allen-Beckles (Villa) 12 receptions, 162 yards, 4 TDs

My least favorite part about writing is writing about my own team. Predicting whether or not my team will win the finals is definitely the most excruciating experience of my FPF writing career and I have to do it twice in the same article, so here goes nothing.

For starters, Kiss My Outlaws will be playing this game with five players. Abigail Cockerton is injured and will be sitting on the edge of the field to technically count as KMO’s second female player. In reality she will not be participating in this match.

These is one path to victory for Kiss My Outlaws in this one and it is to get into a shutout with Les Petits Phoques. It will be impossible for them to win a defensive affair so they will need to go score for score with LPP. What that means is that Stephen Harripersaud will need to be absolutely perfect in this one. A single interception in this one could very well spell disaster. On the other hand, the KMO defence will be hoping for just one stop in this game. While it is extremely difficult to stop a team with only five players, KMO have the athletes to do it.

As for LPP they just need to play mistake free football and not panic. Their opponents will be playing a man down which means that there will always be someone open to complete a pass. As longas they take those easy completions this should be a comfortable win for LPP.

Prediction: Les Petits Phoques.

These teams have played twice already in the regular season and both games have had drastically different outcomes. The first was a high scoring affair that ended tied 31-31 while in the second Kiss My End Zone played a perfect game defensively and kept 3H off the scoreboard. KMEZ won that second game 33-0.

The biggest question in this one is who will 3HUNNAS have available? In the semis they were without their star receiver Nykolas Pierre-Masse and their usual starting QB Anthony Sotomayor. Despite missing the two biggest pieces of their offence, they found a way win. Regardless of who is under center for 3H, the most important matchup in this one will be the one between the 3H QB and Joey Notaro, the rusher for Kiss My End Zone. Marc Antoine Martin ran for nearly 100 yards and a score in the semis so limiting his ability to run will be key in this one.

As for Kiss My End Zone, they need to treat this game as any other regular season. In their semifinal game versus Sneaky Snakes it was very clear that this team was on edge. Ignacio Valdez Manzanedo threw his first interception of the season and simply looked off. He needs to get back to his regular season form if KMEZ hope to win this one.

All in all, 3HUNNAS would need to do something exceptional to win this one while KMEZ just need to play their usual game and that is why I will give KMEZ the edge in this one.

Prediction: Kiss My End Zone

Les P’tites Miettes vs Red Nation – Women’s

ElementAdvantage
Quarterback PlayLes P’tites Miettes

SecondaryRed Nation

This is such a great matchup because we have the awesome well rounded offence of Les P’tites Miettes going against the stellar defensive athletes of Red Nation.

As I alluded to previously, the first question in this one is which version of Alyson Sobol will we see. In her first matchup versus LPM, Sobol threw no interceptions but just one touchdown. In her second match versus them she threw for 2 TDs and twice as many INTs. Clearly, this LPM defence has the best of Sobol.

Presuming that Sobol will have a rocky game, I expect that this one will come down to the Red Nation defence. While that might sound like a scary proposition for most teams, when you have Rachelle Vallieres in your backfield that is not necessarily a bad thing. She has averaged a pick-six a game during the regular season and I expect her to be the difference maker in this one. If she can manage a defensive score, LPM could be left reeling. This Red Nation defence will need to produce more turnovers then their QB Sobol and while that is possible, I do not think it is likely.

Prediction: Les P’tites Miettes
