Division 5A & 5B Week 3 Recap

Week 3

Guys, it happened. It actually happened.

I’m happy to say that just like Mark Sanchez, Ryan Fitzpatrick, EJ Manuel and all other journeymen quarterbacks, I was just signed to a one year deal by the Texas Rangers. While the scenario around the signing isn’t ideal and I wish Kieran Ranger a speedy recovery, I look forward to making him proud and turning the Texas Rangers season around.

You guys should see me at the field a little bit more and I’ll get to play against the teams I critique which should make things interesting to say the least. I’ll look forward to the challenges that brings.

As I often say, Mahomies, you’re up.

Because I’m running a little bit late this week, let’s jump right into the action.

5A

Big Fun Marty Mix 8 – 19 vs. GLC – 20

In a game that came down to the wire, I truly think we saw two teams at their best defensively. The result, a relatively low scoring game that gave us 8 total interceptions and less than 200 yards passing, combined!

Big Fun Marty Mix 8 and Evan Ely Nolet took a lead into the half and then things went downhill from there. Nolet couldn’t seem to find his receivers or get creative enough with his play calling in the second half and ultimately Hai Minh Luong made more throws to give GLC the victory. The biggest difference with both teams, in my opinion, was that Luong showed his familiarity with his offense and knew exactly what plays to call when it mattered.

GLC did a great job taking away the deep ball and BFPM8 was forced to throw the short and intermediate routes which isn’t exactly what they enjoy doing. They’re a team that has speed and likes to take their shots down field in order to loosen up the defense but that wasn’t working and Nolet didn’t have many answers.

Kevin Lubin was the standout receiver in this game, catching all 3 of Luong’s touchdowns and was truly the difference maker in this game keeping it close for GLC. It will be interesting to see what’s next for both of these teams as BFPM8 try to stay relevant in the playoff race while GLC now sits pretty at the top of their Conference.

Ravens 33 vs. Palpatine 39

This game did not start well for Palpatine as the backup QB, Mathieu Domon threw an interception on his very first throw. Justin Sarlabous made a great play and jumped an out route to get his hands on the ball. After that first mistake, though, Domon played an excellent game and used both Marquis brothers very well to pick apart the Ravens defense. Who knew the Ravens defense was so vulnerable?

Offensively, things were a different story, though. The combination of Justin Sarlabous and Mathieu Houle worked great and when you mix in a deep ball or two to Marc-Antoine Vallee and Don Jean-Charles you get a pretty good offense. If they could only use Alex David more as well, this team looks unstoppable on paper. For Palpatine, Domon focused on two things – the Marquis Brothers and his very underrated center in Stephane Turmel. Turmel even made a great catch on 4th down in the first half that when looking back, could have truly been the difference in this game.

Let’s fast forward to the end of the game where the game was decided by a few series of events. Firstly, Palpatine was able to stop the Ravens on 4th down to get the ball back and the game all tied. Mathieu Domon led a fairly successful drive down the field but then struggled in the redzone. He missed three straight passes to bring Palpatine to a 4th down of their own. When this game seemed destined for a tie, Domon was able to find Philippe Aussant in the middle of the endzone who made a pretty spectacular catch of his own to get the points they needed to seal the victory. An exciting game to say the least.

5B

Black Knights 25 vs. A-Town 24

I didn’t know a lot about A-Town coming into this one and I thought that Black Knights would have a much easier time but I was wrong. This was one of the more exciting games I’ve score kept between two teams that are passionate about football. Both quarterbacks played very well and while the Black Knights had no answer for Jimmy Marneris, they managed to escape with the one point victory.

Both teams didn’t manage a score on their first drive – A-Town got stopped on 4th down near the goal line and the Black Knights punted from just outside the 10 yard line. On A-Town’s second drive, after a few short completions, they managed a 29 yard completion to Mitch Jose to get them into scoring range. After another short pass, Marneris got his first touchdown of the day from 3 yards out but what may have forshadowed the rest of the game, they were unable to convert on their extra point.

Stephan Larosilliere moved the ball much more methodically than Emile Plante on their second drive but the result was the same, a 3 yard touchdown to their own best player, Dynell Pierre. It didn’t take long for A-Town to answer back and retake the lead and they made it 12-6 in 3 plays, two of them going to Marneris. On the play right after the touchdown, Larosilliere was able to complete a 37 yard pass to Pierre. There was some confusion on the play because Pierre lost his flag early, but the A-Town defense stopped playing, not knowing they needed to touch him before Darcely finally did near the endzone.

The game went on like this for both halves. Mitch Jose and Darryl Dorcely also had great games for A-Town and Fabrice Thomas stepped up when he needed to for Black Knights, including twice on 4th down. Black Knights went up by a point early in the second half and stayed on top for the rest of the way. A-Town had a chance to take the lead at the end of the game but the Black Knights redzone defense stood tall, quite literally, and stopped A-Town on 4 straight downs.

The U 30 vs. Fighting Flamingos 26

You have to appreciate the confidence wearing a bright pink t-shirt can bring, but unfortunately for the Fighting Flamingos, they fell a little bit short in this one. Not far removed from Division E, I don’t think that I would have predicted such a close score between these two teams. The U has the talent to compete in 5A and maybe even Division 4 and the Flamingos gave them a solid run for their money in this one, matching them almost blow for blow, even maintaining a lead going into the half.

The game began with the teams trading scores back and forth, but the Fighting Flamingos were able to hold their lead due to their ability to convert on extra points. Brad Evans spread the ball around nicely, favoring Brandon and Miles Keiller who combined for just over half of Evan’s total yards on the night. Evan Frank often took advantage of a shorter field to be able to retaliate but it was Joseph Kano who made the difference with his 40 yard touchdown pass when they needed it most.

Each team had an interception a side and the game truly felt like it could be decided by the last team to score. The Fighting Flamingos we’re enjoying a nice season, starting 1-0-1 and now they sit back at .500 with an important game coming up in Week 4. Will they get back to above .500 or falter?

I don’t generally worry about The U due to their roster on paper, but are they getting complacent? Are they bored of their competition and is the regular season becoming simply a formality much like the New England Patriots? They’ll need to stay sharp as this game proves that they can be defeated at any time.

Corey’s Love ‘EM & Hate ‘EM

After 3 weeks of play, we’re starting to see teams either figure it out or prove that they may not have the pieces to be successful moving forward. As always, there are also the bubble teams who may be relying on their studs a little bit too much and who may not have as much depth. Last week, a few guys I called out didn’t play, however for the rest of picks turned out pretty good. I was wrong with Jon Moodie and the Longhorns but called that Justin Cerantola would have a big game and that Zacharie Quiviger would struggle a little bit more than usual – he ended up with two interceptions and they lost the game. Alex David didn’t quite shine like I expected him too but Dynell Pierre finally put up relevant numbers on offense in a close game. Jeremy White had a much improved Week 3 and put up 8 touchdowns, while Andrew Langburt was also solid. My 5B receiver predictions split down the middle as Enzo Bellini didn’t have a catch but Brandon Keiller had a big day at the office.

Here’s another week of predictions that you can either take to the bank, put up as bulletin board or dismiss as one would dismiss the media anyways. Does the media ever get anything right?

5A Quarterbacks I LOVE in Week 3

Voodoo – Frank KayeThe longhorns need to fix their defense and need to do it fast, if not Frank will have a field day.

Dream Chasers – Ben McMahon A week after throwing 8, it’d be silly to not include him against a Ravens defense that hasn’t lived up to potential.

KeepItTogether – Joseph Buffone They haven’t been great, but I think this will be his best game against one of the weaker opponents he will face this year.

5A Quarterbacks I HATE in Week 3 (The B Theme wasn’t on purpose, I promise)

Broccasion – Justin CerantolaAfter a solid game last week, I think Justin takes a step backwards against Tents & Hammocks.

Bruthers – Steve SannerI don’t think he’ll be able to use Browman as much and Les Flamants Fous will force him to be creative and he may struggle.

Buffalo Wild Wings – Tristan RinaldisHe’s a solid QB but he has a date with the Saiyans defense. I wouldn’t bet on a big game.

5A Receivers I LOVE in Week 3

Dream Chasers – Hasani WorrellObviously if McMahon has a big game I fully expect the same for his top target.

Super Saiyans – Dylan SegallJust as much as the guys like saying his name on the podcast, I think he helps Allard open up the field this week. Give me at least a touchdown of more than 20 yards.

Tents & Hammocks – Danny AylwardThis one should be high scoring and brother Aylward benefits the most.

5A Receivers I HATE in Week 3

Ravens – Alex David – He let me down last week and just like in fantasy, once you lose a little bit of faith, they start to see more of the bench. If we were playing fantasy, I’d probably trust other guys more than David right now.

Flamants Fous – Thomas CoutuDamn, that rhymed. Regardless of who plays QB for Les Fous, the ball seems to get spread around more than one player being targeted. He’ll be relied upon on defense to chase Sanner around so I don’t see him having a big game offensively.

5B Quarterbacks I LOVE in Week 3

EZW – Jeremy WhiteAs I said above, it’s really hard not to include a guy who threw for 8 scores last week.

Takeover – Ian EinheiberI think this will be his best game this season after a mediocre start.

The U – Evan FrankGood quarterback, great weapons, subpar opponent. That’s a recipe for a big game.

5B Quarterbacks I HATE in Week 3

Sterdam – Massimo ManagoDefinitely not on the list due to skill, I think his style of play hinders him against the big and fast Black Knights.

Dope Boys – Guillaume GodardA comment I heard last week was that the Dope Boys absolutely do not care about winning. This could be a good and bad thing in recreational football but I think that means Godard will struggle against an athletic defense this week.

5B Receivers I LOVE in Week 3

Sterdam – Gabriel PoissonCan you hate a QB but love a receiver on the same team? Well too bad. I think Poisson benefits in the same way that Marneris did last week.

ORSA – Matteo MarinoI saw him from a distance last week absolutely tear up EZW. I think he finds the same success this week.

Punishers – Junior SperaCall it a hunch, but I think Spera has a big week as one of Iadeluca’s favorite targets.

5B Receivers I HATE in Week 3

A-Town – Jimmy MarnerisHe was impressive to say the least last week, but I think the Bruins do a better job at covering him. He’ll see a lot of Zwirn on defense in my eyes.

Threat Level Midnight – Simon RichardLove the team name, don’t like the matchup this week.

Kneed Help – Jeremy RonsinOn a team that spreads the ball around, he has had some success but faces an incredibly tough matchup this week.

“You Ball, You get the Call”

First of all, although I couldn’t find a way to get in touch with him, shoutout to Ben McMahon who put up a huge game with 183 yards and 8 passing touchdowns. Just because I may not hear from somebody doesn’t mean props should be ignored, and you can never ignore a guy who throws for 8 scores. Just like McMahon, Jeremy White for EZW also scored 8 touchdowns, but I decided to give his go to target this week the call since Jeremy looks for too much attention anyways.  I see those dances on the field, man. Other than McMahon, the trend continues of seeing more individual performances in 5B for some reason. Here are a few guys that caught my eye this week.

I should also point out that while I only gave Adam Browman 3 questions just like everybody else (they are marked with an asterisk), you’ll see very quickly that I think he enjoys the spotlight on the Bruthers and often adds in his own questions. I hope you guys enjoy his interview just as much as I do.

5A

Outlaws – Shyanne Stewart – 4 catches, 110 yards, 1 TD, 4 tackles

  1. You’re known to dominate on the defensive side of the ball, this proves you can do it on offense too. In your opinion, how come you’re not used more?

it’s all about the matchups and whoever is able to get open

  1. What’s the best part about playing with Stephen Harripersaud, as a teammate and as a quarterback?

Steve’s a great teammate and as for qb he finds ways to get everyone involved

  1. You often do really well in the regular season but have faltered in the playoffs. What will make this year different?

The reason why I my stats go down during the playoffs is that teams start to cover me more because they’ve seen what I can do and that opens up the field for everyone

Bruthers – Adam Browman – 9 catches, 62 yards, 1 TD, 4 tackles

  1. It looks like a completely new Bruther’s team this year. Why was this offseason different?

We were tired of losing, it was time to shake things up. Training camp was held in Vermont this year. First cuts were at the border. We had some hard decisions to make and we lost a lot of good men. All in all, Vermont brought us closer and it changed our culture for the better. We’re playing a lot more NCAA 2013 now, we made a run with a University of Miami team but lost in the natty. We ask ourselves everyday what it means to be a Bruther and I think that’s helped.

  1. Any key offseason acquisitions?

I’m glad you asked Corey. I want you to remember the name Dario Bucci, this kid is special. All he wants to do in life is abuse quarterbacks and be a positive role model for FPF Junior. Dario is a natural knee bender, with an explosive get-off. Love his motor, love his toughness, he’s an overall a good kid, and reminds me of a Simeon Rice. He sets the tone for our defense and might be an early lock for the hall.

  1. ** I’m a little disappointed that you asked Steve to play QB after I helped you win your first championship in the spring. Explain that decision.

Corey, we had a great run in the Spring, but I had a vision from god. He spoke to me and said, Steven Sanner is QB1 for the Bruther’s, and man it showed on Sunday. QB1 is a proven leader, he puts the ball in a position for me to make plays and I thank him for trusting me. God Bless his soul!

  1. ** You beat a very tough Mahomies team. How did you pull off the win?

We knew the Mahomies game was going to be a grind. The Quiviger-Saro connection was solid but my man Dario came to play. Dario put the pressure on Quiviger all game and came through with 3 sacks. QB1 AKA Sanner looked like the chosen one Luka Doncic, that boy was on one. The game was back and forth until my Bruther Daniel Adler sealed the game with a pick six. God bless that man!

  1. You balled out Sunday. What can you attribute your performance to?

The good lord put me in a position to make plays and I am nothing without him, to god be the glory.

  1. ** You are now 3-0 and have beaten some good teams even with an unpredictable roster at times. What makes you guys so hard to beat?

We’re playing for our injured Bruther Morgan Tajfel. He has a pretty nasty ankle injury and we’re holding out hope for a playoff return. We also seek inspiration from the ‘road grader’ himself, Quenton Nelson. We make sure to watch at least three Youtube videos of him before we ever step foot on a field. I’d also like to give a shoutout to the man child Jamarcus Russell and of course God who keeps me great, we would not be here without him. God bless!

Palpatine – Vincent Marquis – 4 catches, 93 yards, 3 TDs, 1 tackle

  1. Do you have a history with Mathieu Domon as QB or was their instant chemistry? Is this a permanent change for your team?

Non, Mathieu remplaçait Marc parce que celui-ci c’était blessé à la tête récemment. Mathieu était à l’écoute de nos suggestions de jeux et ça aidait beaucoup

  1. Who’s the better QB, Mathieu or Marc-Andre?

ils sont très semblable, peut-être que Mathieu est plus précis par contre et il a l’avantage de pouvoir courir.

  1. Did you guys choose the team name because of Star Wars or is it something else? What made you guys choose the name?

On voulait un nom comique, on a voté sur Facebook nos préférences.

5B

Les Barons – Marc-Antoine Viens – 19/25, 213 yards, 6 TDs

Les Barons – Laurent Hamel – 5 catches, 89 yards, 3 TDs

  1. It was your team’s best offensive showing of the season. Why did everything work so well?

Marc-Antoine: We all made a lot of mistakes last game even though we won ! So we decided to make some changes et everything went well. We are also a young team and more than half of the player are in there first season in FPF ! I think everyone is starting to understand their role and we started playing to our potential ! We also have a great defense that getss us stop when needed and always offer us some great field position or even better some points ! It’s really a team effort and everybody is doing their part !

Laurent: We are a new team and we are starting to play well together, as you can see. The play calling was on point so we took every opportunity that we had to fill the scoreboard. But we have to give credit to the defense who gave them a hard time and for Savard’s pick-six.

  1. Marc-Antoine, what’s the best part about having Laurent as a receiver and Laurent, what makes Marc-Antoine a great quarterback?

Marc-Antoine: I’ve know Laurent from a long time ago and also coached him in tackle football so I know how he plays ! He is fast, tall and has really great hands ! But is best trait is his understanding of the game ! He runs crisp route and is always well positioned! A really great asset and having him on the field also opens up a lot of the other receivers!

Laurent: Marc-Antoine has a great vision on the field, he’s able to read defense easily and he makes quick decision so he hits the best target every play, that also explain why he only has 2 interceptions.

  1. Do you think that the league is not paying enough attention to this team?

Marc-Antoine: we like having the underdogs status so let’s keep it that way ! It motivate us to prove critics wrong !

Laurent: Of course, but we like being the underdogs. They’re going to see. The lack of attention is just another reason to step up and win it all.

Sterdam – William Tremblay-Lacombe – 6 catches, 54 yards, 3 TDs, 4 tackles

  1. Are you and your brother the best wide receiver duo in the division? Why?

En fait, je pense qu’on a le meilleur trio de receveurs de la division en incluant Gabriel Poisson. On excelle tous dans un aspect différent, ce qui fait de nous un groupe complet.

  1. You have often played quarterback in the past and have thrown a bit this season too, but do you think you guys are a better team with Massimo at QB?

Oui définitivement, Massimo joue très bien depuis le début de la saison. Il n’avait jamais joué au football de sa vie, mais ça ne parait pas du tout. Il va continuer à s’améliorer et on veut rester avec lui durant toute la saison.

  1. Help me introduce Sterdam to the rest of the league, what don’t we know about you guys?

Individuellement, on est plus athlétique et plus talentueux que les autres équipes. Il nous manque juste un peu de cohésion et d’expérience. Laissez-nous un peu de temps et on va être en mesure de battre n’importe qui.

EZW – Charles-Olivier Lavigne – 9 catches, 126 yards, 5 TDs, 1 tackle, 1 INT, 1 Def. TD

  1. What do you prefer, QB or receiver?

Of course I prefer Qb because it has always been my position, but as long as I am playing football I’m happy.

  1. Everything worked offensively for you guys, why such a big change between week 2 and week 3?

I didn’t play with EZW during week 2 because of an injurie but there’s definitely an adaptation to do with the size of the field. We will only get better and better!

  1. Which team has a better chance at a championship this year, EZW or All Hooks? Why?

I really do think that both teams have chances to win the championship. We gained a lot of experience with our previous defeats.

Tough Lungs – Daron Migdesyan – 4 catches, 44 yards, 2 TDs, 1 tackle, 4 INTs

  1. Love the New Jerseys, look good play good! What’s gonna make the tough lungs a tough game for any opponent this season?

Thanks for noticing, some of us decided to go Long sleeve because it can be extremely cold in some of the domes we play in.(I highly suggest it to any who plays flag) But what I think is going to be tough playing against us this season, more than our extremely comfortable jerseys, is the Experience we have in this league. Especially in a division where a lot of the teams have only 1-2 seasons of experience. We believe our experience will be the difference maker at the end of the game

  1. 4 interceptions last game, must be close to a record. What worked so well?

4 picks is my personal best. It’s sort of get out of jail free card. If I ever have a bad game and I’m taking heat for it, I can tell them to come talk to me when they get 4 picks in one game! I think the secret to my success was that I was finally feeling healthy and I was able to read and react at the speed I like to play at. From the beginning of the game we we were able to make the QB do what we wanted him to do and it was simply on us to close the game out with our offense.

  1. You guys have been together for a while now, any goals for the season or unfinished business left?

Every single year is different but our goal is always to win the division. Some of us on the team won the Inaugural 5B Championship few years ago and we would love to win it again. A lot of great teams in the division and nothing will come easy but we know we have to do to come out on top!
