Division 3 Preview Article

Happy New Year everybody, and welcome to the first Division 3 article of the 2019 FlagPlus Football Winter Season!

For those of you that don’t know me, I am Brent Bodkin, and I will be your writer this season. For you FPF vets that are familiar with me and my work, welcome back.

Obviously, the main goal in my article, is to cover D3. In the past when I have written for other divisions, I have stuck to the same formula as all the other writers, in that I give you guys recaps and previews of games, my weekly picks (I won’t pick games involving my team), as well as my thoughts and opinions, on various things like rule changes, the performances of individuals as well as teams, matchups, and general topics around the league.

Before I continue, let me say that if I call-out a team or player, and they prove me wrong, I have always been the first one to admit it. The flipside of course, is if I call-out a person or squad, and then they start to feel a certain way about it or me, but what I said gets proved right, then that’s fair game as well.

At the end of the day, we play in the league to have fun. For some, this is a place to stay in shape physically and mentally while waiting for the tackle season to start. For others it is their only experience playing football. For myself, as well as others who are done playing tackle football, it is a way to still play a game that we love. Simply put, mostly all of us have to get up to go to work and/or class the next morning, so let’s treat each other with respect, and try not to take ourselves too seriously, because life is too short.

Since we are all football fans here, whether it be watching the game, playing it, or both, I figured let’s spend some time just talking about the game as well, even outside of FPF. Over the years, I have touched on a few topics, namely Colin Kaepernick, Montana vs Brady, etc…I like to think of this as an open ended forum with you the readers, which is why I give my email, and Twitter handle at the end of each article.

Just to be clear, I am always open for an intelligent conversation about the greatest game in the world. There is no right or wrong, just opinion. Like I said before, as long as you can be respectful, then we’re good.

Just like any other sports league professional or not, this is the best time of the season. Not a single team has suffered a loss, and nobody has gotten injured. Most important of all, whether it’s a rookie team looking to prove themselves, a squad trying to show they can compete in D3 after making the jump from a lower division, having a winning record, or capturing the championship, the hopes and dreams of all 26 teams and their players, are alive and well.

We are a long way from crowning a champion, but why should we let something like four months stop us from making crazy predictions that have a high chance of not coming true?

Again, Division 3 consists of 26 teams. The top 8 teams in Conference A, and Conference B, make the playoffs.

With that said, here is my Winter Season Preview

Conference A

East

Brotherhood

For the fourth straight Winter Season in a row, the best Wide Receiver in FPF – Theo Ojeaha – is playing Quarterback. Over that span, the 9-time All-Star, has thrown a jaw-dropping 165 touchdowns, and only 35 interceptions.

Throwing to his trusted receivers led by Jamal Gittens, Quaysie Gordon-Maule, and Khalil Kerr, the Brotherhood offense, has a chance to be the best offense in the entire division.

The reigning Div 3 champs, are looking to win back-to-back titles. Can they do it? The journey starts Wednesday night at Stade Hebert, against Top Sauce.

Cougars

Perhaps they should call themselves St. Leo’s Finest. A collection of former St. Leonard Cougars, chemistry shouldn’t be a problem for this group.

There are two major questions facing this team. The first is, after AJ Gomes, and the sure-handed duo of Anthony Siggia, and Junior Spera, where will the secondary scoring come from?

Secondly, this is a squad with a lot of youth, and players with very little FPF experience. How fast will they be able to assimilate to the speed and skill of Division 3?

Finally, and most importantly, are they good enough defensively to stop anybody consistently? We will find out shortly.

LGM

This team has an interesting mix. They have a really good Quarterback in Alex Lever, who just managed to fit under the Div. 3 QB cap – no doubt leaving the Sean Avraam, Mario Porreca, and Joey Taylor of the FPF world upset- and some playmakers in Charles Baillargeon, Nicolas Guimier, and Robbi Dejean.

For the team to be successful however, they will need their lower division additions in Vadim Chernyak, Shawn Fontaine, and Alex “Eagle” D’Aquila, from Hot Boys Hotline, to make an impact on a regular basis as well.

Les Maloudes

With pretty much the same core intact from their 2017 Div. 4A championship squad, this team has the experience and big-play ability to go toe-to-toe with anybody.

While their offense has the ability to light up the scoreboard, it is the Les Maloudes defense, that has the potential to be extremely dangerous. Led by Marc-André Paradis, Francis Janelle, Louis-Philippe Paquette, and Guillaume St-Amand, among others, this unit can take advantage of any mistakes that opposing offenses might make.

Les Studs

Having written for Division 4A and 4B last winter, I had a chance to see these guys a lot. While he may still be under some people’s radar, Quarterback Samuel Caron, won’t be there for much longer. The former U of M pivot, has a cannon for an arm, can make all the throws, and can beat teams with his legs as well.

The same not going to be underrated for much longer label, applies for Snapper Félix Laflamme as well. The former Carabins Wide Receiver, had a coming out party last winter, as he shredded defenses with his speed, agility, and route running, on the way to scoring 23 touchdowns. The chemistry and timing between Caron, and Laflamme, was evident from Week 1.

The other side of the ball is where I have concern. While solid two-way player William Nkaye, was their ball-hawk with 5 interceptions last winter, and Rusher Félix Laflamme racked up an impressive 12 sacks, the defense only had 7 total takeaways, while giving up 246 points, which gave them the tenth worst defense in the 24 team 4B.

Who else can step up and make a play for Les Studs when they need a stop?

Lightweight

The full roster remains a mystery, as they have only six players listed. One thing we know for sure, is that much to my disappointment, Quarterback Simon Dagenais, will not be playing defense for the team. He’s an All-Star, shouldn’t he have to?

As far as the players we can confirm, Cory Kennedy, Hendrick Ambroise, Justin Blanchard, and Francois Hogue, all provide the team with guys who can make plays on both sides of the ball.

Just like yours truly, Dagenais, is always on the lookout for talent. He will fill out the rest of the roster, the only question, is with who?

Top Sauce

This team has the potential to win it all. With tons of championship experience, and Vince Nardone at Quarterback, throwing to the likes of Chris Milard, Justin McLean, Kenton Lowe, and Colin Kaepernick’s number one fan in Terry Tam, Top Sauce, can score on anybody.

The only questions surrounding this squad will be on defense. Firstly, who will be the Rusher? Will it be Sam Hansen, who had career-high in sacks is 8, or will it be G.M. Kolethras who cracked double digit QB takedowns (10), for the first time since 2013, last season with the Homosapiens in Division D1?

Secondly, with the Richard Sherman, Champ Bailey, and Darelle Revis approach most likely being employed by opposing offenses, when it comes to throwing at Nardone, Milard and McLean, the onus will fall on Chris McCarthy, and the aforementioned Hansen, G.M. Kolethras, and Lowe, to make plays consistently on defense.

West

Junkyard Dogs

After a strong showing in Division C this past summer, that saw them finish with a (9-1) record, and reach the Conference A Finals, where they lost to the eventual champions The Alpha-T’s, the Junkyard Dogs, bring back pretty much the same team.

The one big addition JYD did make, was FPF Hall of Famer, and arguably the greatest Quarterback in the league’s history, in none other than Kevin Wyeth.

Last winter, in his first real extensive action at receiver since the 2014 spring campaign with One Night Stands, Wyeth put up 34 receptions, 378 yards, and 15 touchdowns for The Leons, in the 35+ league.

Surely, he’ll put up good numbers, and give the offense a boost, but the presence of Wyeth, should be able to help JYD QB Jason Rossie, not only as a receiving option, but mentally as well, as Rossie has been known to occasionally get heated with teammates, which can cause him to get frazzled and lose focus.

This team has a lot of other weapons as well, in Rory Semerjian, Jonathan Williams, Jonathan Lyristis, and defensive mastermind and FPF family member Rob White. If the team, and their QB can put it all together, the shy could be the limit.

Martine et le flag

This team has boom or bust written all over it.

At Quarterback, they have an up and comer with Samuel Bédard, who finished second in passing yards in Div. 4B behind Les Studs’ Samuel Caron.

At receiver, the team has options, in Guillaume Ranger, Dariusz Golebiowski, and William Marchand.

On defense, the team is led by Justin Dion, who intercepted a team-high 7 passes last winter.

The one major issue that hangs over this squad, is besides the aforementioned Golebiowski, no one else on this team really has any higher division experience.

The jump from Division 4B, to Div. 3 is a big one. For a team with 7 out of their 8 players (including 2 rookies) having played less than 3 seasons of FPF, the lack of experience may be too much to overcome.

Freshmen

Moving from one team with little experience, to another with virtually none, Freshmen, have the perfect team name, as four members of the roster are going into their second FPF season, while the other four are rookies.

As for the four that have experience, they encountered a rough one, as they got hammered in Division A this past spring, finishing with an (0-10) record, and surrendering an FPF worst 509 points.

The move down to Div. C, will obviously help the team. The question that needs to be answered though, is on a squad full of unknown players for the most part, who on the roster is capable of making a play on either side of the ball?

Sometimes the unknown works in your favour. The Freshmen, saw the complete opposite in the Spring Season. Can they turn the tables this around this time?

KGP

Jonathan Garfinkle, Jeff Rosenblatt, Fred Saleh, Phil Cutler, Gabe D’Amico-Mazza, James Crowe, anyone familiar with FPF, recognizes these names, and knows that these are some of the staples of the league.

Offensively, chemistry and timing shouldn’t be an issue with this squad, as the team has been together for what seems like an eternity.

Last winter, the team finished with a (6-4) record, and made it to the second round if the playoffs. If the team wants to pick up where they left off, their defense, which only allowed three teams to score more than 30 points in the regular season, but gave up 44, in their postseason loss to Laval’s Finest, will have to take them there.

Trinity

Speaking of veteran teams, J.F Marquis, Alex Jubenville, Alexandre Samson, Benjamin Dansereau-Leclerc, and Vincent Marquis, have been together since the team’s first season in spring of 2016.

The speedy and vertical offense, is capable of scoring on opponents at will.

Defense however, has always been the team’s Achilles heel, since they exited the lower divisions. Team Captain J.F Marquis, has tried to solve the problem, with the addition of Marc-André Lapointe. The former All-Star, has proven to be a shutdown Defensive Back, on various teams that he has played on.

While Lapointe can’t cover all five receivers, he will definitely help a team that missed the post-season in the Spring Season with a (4-6) record (they were called Mutation), and gave up nearly 50 points in their playoffs loss to TOPSZN, last winter.

TOPSZN

Yet another team making the jump from Div. 4A, TOPSZN, has the size, speed, firepower, and swagger, to go head-to-head with anybody.
With the addition of Eddy Lee, they potentially now have the missing piece their defense has always needed.

Still, at the end of the day, this team will only go as far as Quarterback Jarryd Taylor will take them. One of the best Wide Receivers in not just FPF, but in USPORTS as well, Taylor, has shown flashes of having what it takes to become an upper echelon QB.

If he is going to finally place himself firmly on that level, Taylor, will have to do so without two of his top receivers, in the previously mentioned Quaysie Gordon-Maule, and Khalil Kerr (The Brotherhood).

Replacing them, will be the duo of Jaylan Grandison, and fellow Concordia Stinger Jersey Henry, who both bring a different skillset their the former TOPSZN WRs. How long it takes Taylor to get on the same page as his new targets will be worth watching.

Conference B

East

The Commission

New Quarterback, new receivers, and a new Defensive Coordinator. A lot has changed for the veteran squad. Gone are playmakers AJ Gomes, Vincent Marquis, and Eddy Lee, along with last Spring Season Quarterback J.F Marquis.

Replacing the them is Dynell Pierre, Joel Malkin, Keeshon Mayers, (returning after 3 seasons), and Domenico Benevento, who is making the transition from Snapper to Quarterback. How fast the FPF vet can adapt to the position switch, and the offense can develop chemistry, will be key.

The Alpha-T’s

Chemistry, chemistry, chemistry, it is next to impossible to find a team with more than The Alpha-T’s.

Besides chemistry, the other c-word this team has in spades in championships, with their most recent being the Division C title this past summer.

Despite their championship pedigree, and going undefeated in the Spring Season, the only question facing this team, is whether they can do it all over again in a higher division.

Led by dual-threat Quarterback Jesse Dupuis, the TAT’s offense can beat you with short passing game, deep ball, or by having Dupuis run it every second or third play. How his sometimes unorthodox throwing motion, and unbalanced passes translate to D3, where the defenses are that much better and aggressive, remains to be seen.

Every time Dupuis and his squad have gone up a division, they have stepped up their game. Can they do it once again?

Big Ballers

This team is an interesting mix. They have a lower and higher division All-Star in Gabriel Poisson, and Guillaume De Palma respectively. Two players in Stéphane Baganizi, and Quentin Bienaimé, who haven’t played since 2015, another player in Nicolas English, whose last FPF snap was in 2014, and two former McGill Redmen, in David Polynice, and Moy McDonald.

This team should be interesting to say the least.

Sweat & Beers

Led by 6-time All-Star, and Hall Of Famer Robbie Robinson, Sweat & Beers, has a lot of experience, and some championship hardware as well.
In Chris Williams, Justin Cerantola, and Rocco Christiano, the roster does have some speed too.

The only qquestios I have about this team, is will they be able to score enough, as they don’t appear to have a clear cut number one receiver, and will they be able to stop anybody defensively?

Jaguars

This is a chippy team, that can back up their talk (mostly done by Patrice Lindor), with big plays.

While their Quarterback Jimmy-Lee Janvier, needs to cut down on the interceptions (16 last winter), the fifth-year vet, can make all the throws, and always gives his team a chance to win.

As for the rest of the offense, the team lost one their top receivers in Dynell Pierre, the off-season addition of Yacoub Telemaque, will make up for some of the explosiveness that left the offense with Pierre.

Although he didn’t produce a single sack after week 4, Darryl Dorcely, still racked up 10 QB takedowns. With Dorcely looking like he isn’t on this year’s squad, the defense will have to find somebody to pick up the mantle.

This team will be judged on how they perform in the post-season. Last winter after averaging 28 points per game, they were one and done in the playoffs, and only scored once in a (36-6) embarrassing loss at the hands of Keyport Lock, in Division 4A.

Let’s see how they respond.

The Crew

I can’t lie, this is a team full of rookies that I know nothing about, except for the fact that one of them Emile Taillefer, might be the same one that plays receiver for the McGill Redmen, and Cedric Bourassa either does, or did, play for Trois-Riviéres College.

Naturally, I asked our Founder, sometimes fearless leader, and main supporter behind the extremely flawed rating system Rob Campana for some info…and he didn’t know anything either.

My apologies to The Crew, but sometimes this happens with brand new teams. Feel free to email, and send some info my way.

Dirty Dawgs

I like this team. They were scrappy, and played from the first to the last whistle.

On offense, they were a pain in the ass to play against, because Quarterback Ryan Lelinowski, would dink and dunk up and down the field all game and chew up the clock, as well as time of possesion.

To beat them, you had to either had to force a turnover (easier said than done), or get some stops, create a big lead, and force the offense to get out of their comfort zone, and have to take deep shots repeatedly.

With Dave Chitayat, Cal Pienaar, Sahar Cohen, and Lelinowski, the core of the team is still intact. This off-season, the team added some reinforcements, in Jason Charbonneau, Jordan Panetta, and Jean-Christophe Binette, making the squad much more deeper in the process.

Although they finished last spring going (4-5-1) in Div. C, the Dirty Dawgs, hung with a lot of the top teams in the division. In fact, they only lost to the 9-1) Mountain Lions by 3 points (41-38) in their first-round playoff game.

Let’s see if the Dirty Dawgs can take the next step.

West

BearSkins

When I look at this team, the two sayings come to mind. “If you can’t beat em, join em”, and “you can go home again”.

The first refers to the addition of Sean Avraam. The former Quarterback of The Commission, who helped TC, beat the BearSkins in the 2017 Division C Finals, joins the team as a receiver. The 6-time All-Star has good hands, and knows how to get open.

The latter saying refers to Neil Etinson. After not playing in the Spring Season, the 15-year vet, returns as the team’s Quarterback, taking over for Mark Belvedere, who filled in admirably during Etinson’s absence.

Etinson already has chemistry with long-time Bearskins receivers Sasha Papich, Marco Bertoldi, Ryan Etinson, and Kevin Libman. Add in Avraam, and FPF Hall Of Famer, and 8-time All-Star Vinny Gualano to the mix, and this offense has a chance not just to be dynamic, put it could very well lead Division 3 in points scored.

Defensively, while they might struggle with speedy quick-strike offenses, the BearSkins, have enough experience on that side of the ball, that they should be able to compensate on most nights.

Blue Chips

Speaking of speedy, aggressive, and quick-strike teams, no one is better at doing it than Blue Chips. Led by the Lamar Jackson of FPF in Jordan Mitchell, as well as receivers Sanders Armand, Marcus Mitchell, and Hennessy Oraye, this team can score from anywhere on the field, and turn a simple slant route into a 40-yard touchdown.

As you can expect, scoring isn’t a problem for Blue Chips, as With the exception of the team’s rookie campaign in 2016, the team has averaged at least 32 points, and scored more than at least 311 total points.

The one major concern with this team, is that they play the same way on the other side of the ball as well. While it’s good to be aggressive on defense, it can also easily backfire when teams become undisciplined.

Despite having perennial Defensive Player of the Year candidate Jose Baba, in their last playoff loss, the team has allowed 40 points or more, which is not a recipe for success in the higher divisions.

This team loves to get in shootouts, but can they come up with stops when they really need it, is the question they must answer.

South Harmon Institute of Technology

Whether they are called the Mountain Lions, Coyotes, or now as the South Harmon Institute of Technology, this is a veteran team that knows how to win.

With receivers Marty Freedman, Kevin Smuda, Adam Rockman, along with the additions of Josh White, and Jordan Allard, Quarterback Jake Applebaum, has a plethora of game-breaking targets from which to choose from.

On the other side of the ball, Zack Goldstein, and AJ Rashkovan, lead a unit that only surrendered slightly more than three touchdowns a game this past spring.

Despite the talent, and the constant changing of the team’s name, this group hasn’t won a championship since 2017.
Can the South Harmon Institute of Technology, end their drought?

Scored Your GF

Hands down, this is the best name of any team in all of FPF!

This is a team half made up of rookies. The potential best of the bunch, could be McGill Redmen Alexandre Warin.

The other half of the team, is made up of veterans Benjamin De Tilly, Bruno Provencher, Victor Rifiorati, and Arno Desjardins, all of who have won at least one championship with former lower division powerhouse Moss City.

With Moss City, the team had Andrew Farrier as their Quarterback. Scored Your GF, doesn’t have the same luxury, as pivot has hockey commitments, that don’t allow him to play FPF in the winter.

Who exactly is going to throw for this team remains a mystery. Whoever it will end up being, will have a huge job in front of them, leading a squad with so little higher division experience.

The Magicians

This team has experience with Derek Zackard, Tony Khoury, and Justin Lavallee. The chemistry between the last two, should be in full effect, as they have been teammates all the way back to 2012, when they were the Snapper and Quarterback combo for the Kardiac Kids.

Other then the trio, the team is stocked full of rookies.

While the team’s immediate success will ride on the shoulders of Khoury, Lavallee, and Zackard, how fast the team’s first year players adapt to the FPF game, will determine the squad’s long-term prognoses.

Olympia Performance

Another squad with a boatload of rookies. I am sensing a trend here.

The only players with FPF experience, are Marvin Golding, Chris Coll, and Alex Donia.

After throwing for 23 touchdowns for Tone It Down, it appears that Golding, will be the team’s Quarterback.
Let’s see what happens.

Bonus NFL Picks

Colts vs Texans – Colts (Upset Special #1)

Thanks to the predictability horrible play of Tennessee Titans Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, (yet another example of a QB that Colin Kaepernick could throw circles around) the Indianapolis Colts waltzed their way into the playoffs.

Both teams split the regular season series, with the Texans winning (37-34) in Week 4, and the Colts returning the favor, as they beat their division rivals (24-21) in Week 14.

Texans Quarterback Deshaun Watson, has been phenomenal since coming back from a torn ACL, as has Colts QB Andrew Luck, who missed all of last season after shoulder surgery.

I am going with the Colts, because they have simply been the better team for over the last month.

In addition to beating the Texans in their last meeting, Indy, and knocking off the Titans last Monday in a win and you’re in game, they also shutout the Dallas Cowboys (23-0) in Week 15.

The Texans on the other hand, haven’t beaten a team over .500, since Week 12, when they beat the Titans (34-17).

Seattle Seahawks @ Dallas Cowboys – Dallas Cowboys

I am a San Francisco 49ers fan, so it pains me to pick Dallas, but I can’t ignore the facts.

Firstly, when Seahawks beat the Cowboys (25-13) in Week 3, Seattle had Pro Bowl Safety Earl Thomas, who killed Dallas in the game, with a team-high 6 tackles, and 2 interceptions. Unfortunately for Seattle, a broken leg knocked the former Texas Longhorn out for the year one week later.

Secondly, and most importantly for America’s Team, they didn’t have Amari Cooper. As you all have seen, the former Raiders Wide Receiver, has been a beast since arriving in big D, putting up 725 yards, and 6 touchdowns.

In the Week 3 meeting, Ezekiel Elliott ran for a game-high 127 yards, on 16 carries, despite facing 8 and 9 man boxes
The presence of Cooper, will not only free up Zeke, but it will surely help Quarterback Dak Prescott, who had a horrible game, throwing for 168 yards, 1 TD, and 2 INTs.

It is hard to doubt Russell Wilson, and Seattle, especially since they’ve 6 of their last 7 games, but I think the Cowboys Hot Boys defense, will cause him to be running for his life behind the Seahawks subpar Offensive Line.

Chargers @ Ravens – Ravens

The Ravens constant pressure provided by the Ravens defense, will do enough to force Phillip Rivers into a back-breaking turnover late in the game. Despite impressive wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Kansas City Chiefs recently, Rivers has been playing all that great, as he has thrown 6 interceptions in his last 3 games.

For the Chargers while they might not allow Lamar Jackson – the Jordan Mitchell of the NFL –, and Running Back Gus Edward’s, to shred them like he did in Week 16, I can’t see how a Bolts defense, missing so many players (Denzel Perryman, Corey Liuget, and Jason Verrett) can slow down the duo all game long.

Philadelphia Eagles @ Chicago Bears – Eagles (My pick for Game Of The Week)

Despite the Chicago Bears (12-4) record, I am still not a true believer of Quarterback Mitch Trubisky. I honestly think that most of his success is courtesy of Head Coach, and offensive mastermind Matt Nagy.

For this team to be successful, they will need to rely heavy on the run game, and hope that the sophomore QB doesn’t turnover the ball
The Bears defense on the other hand, led by Khalil Mack, Akiem Hicks, Roquan Smith, and Eddie Jackson, is something I fully believe in, as they have resembled the 1985 Bears D, led by Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Otis Wilson, and the late Dave Duerson.

The magic that Nick Foles brought to the Eagles last year, is another I believe in, and it appears to have returned, as the team needed a late-season push to make the playoffs.

The Eagles defense might not have Khalil Mack, but in Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, Chris Long, and Michael Bennett, they have some dominant pass rushers of their own.

The defending Super Bowl champs, knows what it takes to win in the playoffs. While the Bears 7-win turnaround from (5-11) to (12-4) has been impressive, I just don’t think that they come up with enough plays on offense to keep up with Foles, and Philly.

Clemson vs Alabama – Alabama

My heart says Clemson and the ACC (I’m an F SU fan), but my rain says Alabama, especially with a healthy a Tua Tagovailoa, and the Tigers missing solid Defensive Tackle, Dexter Lawrence.

Can we please expand the college playoffs to 8 teams already?

That’s it for this week. I will be back next week with a recap of most of the games, a preview of Week 2, and a few other things.

Like I said at the top, this is the most exciting time of the year. The FPF season kicks off, as does the NFL playoffs, and the NCAA National Championship game takes place Monday night. If I could somehow find a legal way to get free beer and sushi, I wouldn’t ask for anything more.
Enjoy the NFL and NCAA games, and good luck to everybody in their Week 1 contests.
