Czikk’s Cover 3: The four kings remain undefeated, Red Raiders get huge comeback win

Four teams in Division 3 remain undefeated in The Brotherhood, Coyotes, Dad Bod Squad and Two and a Half Dans. In Week 7 none of those four teams face an opponent with more than three wins, so it should be interesting to see what happens.

In Week 6 The Brotherhood dominated Jonesers 47-12, Coyotes edged F.O.E 38-35 in a tight game, Dad Bod Squad took out Wolfpack 32-13 and the Dans hammered Les Messieurs Chats 46-25.

Red Raiders notch second ‘W’ in incredible comeback

It was quite the scene nearing the end of the second half when Red Raiders (2-3) QB Mike Roy hit Kenton Lowe streaking across the middle of the field for the go-ahead touchdown against Brocassion (3-2). Roy sprinted to Lowe in celebration, screaming incoherent, testosterone-fuelled dialogue the entire way.

The score gave Red Raiders a 25-19 lead with a few plays left. Brocassion wouldn’t come back.

“It was a big win and we needed it, there’s no doubt about that. This is a very competitive league and 1-3 wasn’t a very good start,” said Roy. “At 2-3 now we have a chance to further our playoff run.”

The game certainly didn’t start well for Red Raiders. Brocassion took a 13-0 lead in the first half, while Roy and his offense were mostly underwhelming. On the game’s opening drive, Kyle Lebofsky picked off Roy in the endzone.

Brocassion QB Kristian Cerantola hit Mark Provost in stride for the game’s opening TD. Kyle Britto grabbed the conversion.

Dylan Taylor picked off Roy on the Red Raiders next possession. Cerantola struck gold from 18 yards out to Lebofsky to make the score 13-0.

Admittedly at this point I thought it might be a blowout, but the Red Raiders had other ideas. Unfortunately they turned over the ball on fourth down on their next possession.

Cerantola and Brocassion could have really made things miserable for their opponents, but a receiver dropped what should have been a touchdown on a nicely-placed ball by Cerantola. Throughout the first half the QB showed smooth footwork. He even executed a few well-played option-keepers, and at this level of play I’d argue it’s usually rare to see an offense work the option at a high-functioning level.  Brocassion did, and it would be cool to see more of it.

But then he threw an interception to Joseph Sifakis, and the entire game changed.

Roy used the momentum to hit Lowe on a long bomb for Lowe’s first score of the game (4 rec, 85 yards, 2 TD). Lowe had a defender directly in front of him and he wasn’t in stride. Somehow, he managed the juke his way to the endzone. The Red Raiders conversion was good to Zach Godstein. The half ended with a 13-7 score.

In the second half Cerantola continued to evade sacks on some nice pocket movement and eventually hit Dylan Taylor for a six-yard score.

Roy used the next possession to build chemistry with Rowe, hitting him for another big passing play. Rowe might not look like a gym rat, but he makes plays for his team at critical times.

Roy fired a TD pass to Godstein in the back of the endzone to cut the deficit to six points. Brocasson achieved decent momentum on their next possession, but turned the ball over on downs. Hinsley Adams applied consistent rush pressure on Cerantola throughout the game.

Roy and co started dinking and dunking the ball down the field, something that seemed to be working for them. They got a huge fourth-down conversion to Jeremy Rooney and then Rowe hauled in another long bomb. Roy ran the ball into the endzone on a QB scramble, tying the game at 19-19.

With under three minutes left, Brocassion drove the ball down to the Red Raiders’ four yard line, but turned the ball over with four plays left. The Raiders got a pass interference call for nearly 30 yards with just two plays left. That’s when the magic happened.

We caught up with Roy and Lowe after the game and asked them about their special comeback. Roy even gave a special tip to the league, to “all you guys who are covering us.”

In the game following Brocassion and Red Raiders on Sunday night, an undefeated Two and Half Dans took on the winless Les Messieurs Chats.

Before the game, the guys from the Dans said that they didn’t consider themselves the best athletes, but they play extremely well together.

Their words rung true Sunday night as the Dans (5-0) defeated the Chats (0-5) 46-25.

The Dans had built up a 27-19 lead by halftime on scoring plays from QB Joey Taylor to Danny McFee (6 rec, 55 yards, 2 TD), Matthew Rupcic (4 rec, 48 yards, 2 TD) and Brandon Aylward (3 rec, 58 yards, TD). Jasmin Rioux rocked the Chats on a huge pick-six, and Rupcic grabbed the conversion.

The Chats opened the scoring on a long pass TD to Jean-François Marquis (2 rec, 39 yards, TD), with a good conversion to Nicola Centomo (5 rec, 52 yards, TD). They also got scores from Centomo and Bruno Collette. QB David Centomo possessed a huge arm, but at times accuracy and receivers not being in the right spot hurt them.

In the second half the Dans took control of the game. McFee took several short passes from Taylor and kept turning on the jets to get big chunks of YAC yardage. His speed was deceptive and his ability to get first downs must have been frustrating for the Chats.

Taylor ran in a TD and, on defense, McFee notched the second of two sacks on the day.

At that point the Chats started to show visible frustration towards both the Dans and the referees. After a turnover on downs for the Chats, Taylor hit Rupcic for his second TD of the game. Rupcic evaded some sloppy tackling on the play.

Mathieu Thuot (5 rec, 60 yards, TD) caught a TD pass for the Chats on a lucky bounce to make it 40-25. On the Dans’ next possession McFee caught his second score of the game.

We caught up with the shifty McFee after the game. He said he doesn’t believe he can be shut down for an entire game from any defensive back in the league, and that he needs to outwork everyone else because of his smaller size. He did just that Sunday night.

Around The League

Coyotes (5-0) come-from-behind 38-35 win over F.O.E (3-2) was likely the week’s most exciting game. Down 20-12 at halftime, Coyotes exploded for 26 points in the second half to cement the win. QB Sammy Feder went 25 for 30, throwing six TDs. Three of them went to Andrew Langburt. Also, AJ Rashkovan is not a good football player. That’s all.

Dilan Daoust and Jordan Moses both grabbed a pair of scores for F.O.E, with Moses being the lone man to pick off Feder.

The Brotherhood (5-0) continued their dominance with a convincing win over Jonesers (2-4). Theo Ojeaha had another 7 TD-performance while Jamal Gittens caught three footballs, all for scores. Ojeaha picked off Jonesers QB Eli Saleh four times.

Dad Bod Squad (5-0) took out Wolfpack (3-2) to remain perfect. Matthew Patrone notched eight tackles, a pick-six and two PDs. Ryan Aridi scored twice on two catches for a grand total of three yards. Anthony Da Silva hauled in seven passes for 90 yards and a score.

The B.D. Bandits (1-4) got their first win of the season by edging OTF (1-4) 26-25. Steve Sanner had a touchdown reception and an interception for the Bandits, while Kenny Baye (4 rec, 84 yards, 3 TD) was a monster for OTF, also picking off a pass.

Neil Etinson was nearly perfect for Bearskins (4-1) as they crushed Mongoose (2-3) 33-6. Etinson went 20 for 26 for 6 TDs and no picks. Marco Bertoldi went over the 100-yard mark on nine catches and scored. Sasha Papich scored thrice on three catches for 84 yards. Papich also picked off Mongoose QB Alexandre Gaudet.

6+R defeated 8 Boys 1 Cup to move to 4-1 on the season, while the Boys fell to 2-3.

It was a celebratory night for Les Eudists (1-4): they notched their first win over Gros Chefs Bandits (1-4). Hugo Henderson passes for 200 yards, 4 TDs and a pick. Louis-Christophe Lafontaine and Marc-André Paradis both caught a pair of scores each. The Bandits offense was horrendous, passing for 52 total yards and three picks.

Lightweight (4-2) edged out Show Me Your TDs (3-2) 14-12. Hendrick Ambroise made 10 tackles in the win, while Cory Kennedy and François Raymond both caught TD passes from Simon Dagenais.

Darksiders (3-2) added to a miserable start for The Heismans (0-5), making them look more Johnny Manziel-Matt Leinart than Barry Sanders or Tony Dorsett. Mathew Bourbonniere-Morin chose not to tackle during the game, instead focusing on intercepting three of Nick Guarna’s passes. On offense Bourbonniere-Morin threw a TD and caught one too.

Top Sauce (4-2) beat Prestige World Wide (0-5) 38-27 when Justin McLean caught seven passes for 137 yards and three TDs. Chris Milard picked off two of Alex Lever’s four picks he threw. For the Prestige, Paul Lapierre caught a pair of TD passes and forced Vince Nardone’s only pick.

Power Rankings

  1. The Brotherhood (5-0): The Brotherhood are playing like a team that gives her 10 racks and tells her to spend it all at the pop-up. They’re unstoppable right now and continue to lead the league in points scored with 220. The next closest team has 190. Theo Ojeaha leads the league with 29 passings TDs, with just one pick. He also leads the league with eight interceptions on defense.
  2. Two and a Half Dans (5-0): They’re a well-oiled machine led by QB Joey Taylor. He won’t kill you with his arm, but he’ll make good decisions with the pigskin. Taylor has the best completion percentage in the league for QBs who’ve thrown more than two passes (77.2%). Matthew Rupcic and Danny McFee are the two main receiving threats for this team, with seven and six scores, respectively.
  3. Coyotes (5-0): Sammy Feder may end up taking this team to the Promised Land. Feder has tossed 28 passing TDs against just two picks, and he’s completing three out of every four passes. The Coyotes defense isn’t performing as well as it should, but we’ll see how that changes as the season progresses.
  4. Dad Bod Squad (5-0): These guys have played better since a narrow 20-14 win in week two over Les Eudists. Or is it that they haven’t been legitimately challenged? By all accounts the Dads should continue their strong play this week against a Jonesers team that has given up a 40-burger in consecutive losses. Ryan Aridi has 11 sacks, tied for the most in the league.
  5. Laval’s Finest (4-1): Laval moves up a spot from last week’s rankings after crushing Les Buddays 54-14. But here’s the catch: they play a very competitive F.O.E (3-2) team this week. Jordan McLaren has scored eight total TDs, including a pick-six.
  6. 6+R (4-1): Since losing to the Dans in Week 1 6+R has won four straight, including a convincing win against 8 Boys 1 Cup this past week. QB Frédéric Viens has passed for 915 yards and 27 TDs. Marc-Antoine Viens has caught nine of those TDs, and added a pair of picks on defense. Anthony Garant has 11 sacks.
  7. Bearskins (4-1): Bearskins get the seven spot because they’ve only lost a game. There’s no doubt these guys can score (181 points), but they’re not exactly playing lights-out defense (134 points). Neil Etinson and Sasha Papich are putting up greasy numbers through the air.
  8. Top Sauce (4-2): Since dropping two games in a row to two good teams (Dans, BearSkins), Vince Nardone and co have feasted on two struggling teams. The offense is there: Nardone leads the league with 1,143 passing yards. Justin McLean may well be a 1,000-yard receiver by seasons end. However, their defense has given up the most points in conference B.
  9. Lightweight (4-1): Like Top Sauce, Lightweight has allowed a questionable amount of scoring against. Offense is their strength, with François Raymond (10 TDs) and Cory Kennedy (9TDs) lighting it up. They play the 3-2 Darksiders in an important game this week.
  10. Show Me Your TDs (3-2): The TDs just lost a two-point heartbreaker to Lightweight and now they’ play The Brotherhood, which I’m sure will be great times. QB Mike Addona is playing trustworthy football, having thrown for 22 TDs and four picks. He’s only been sacked twice. Anthony Addona has nine TDs on 25 catches.
