Coed Remains Just As Unpredictable As Ever

We have passed the mid-season mark and the power rankings are now over and done with. That being said, just one week after writing the power ranking, my coed 2 power rankings have already become outdated.

I had placed Les Semi-Croquants in first, in front of Funtastic 9. The main reason for that order was the lights out play of Semi-Croquants’ quarterback Mariève Girard. She had been fantastic football since the start of the season, but last week’s game was a major step backwards for the second year quarterback. She looked much more like Fall 2020 Mariève Girard then the Mariève Girard we have become accustomed to seeing this season. Funtastic 9 play a very tight man to man defence and clearly struggled with fitting the ball into tight windows. She has been able to make throws with anticipation all season and dissect zone defences. Heck, she was even able to decimate Party Mix’s defence. Even though Party Mix’s defence is far better then Funtastic’s, they barely run any man coverage. I think Funtastic have found the key to stopping Les Semi-Croquants and that is an aggressive man to man defence. I expect opposing defences to throw far more man at Girard in the coming weeks. If Les Semi-Croquants want to hang onto one of the top two seeds, Girard will need to learn how to excel versus man defences.

Week 6 Recaps

Party Mix (38) vs Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (34)

It seems like every week I am talking about a different Party Mix match. Generally, Party Mix games tend to be tight an exciting games because of Party Mix’s slow-paced offence and conservative defence. The combination of the two results in fewer plays, slower drives and thereby closer games.

That was not the case at all in this game. Both of these teams came out all guns blazing, and the result was a high scoring, exciting and slightly sloppy affair. Both Francois Deslauriers and JF Marquis are usually very safe conservative quarterbacks. If they throw one interception in a game, that is a lot. For the two to combine five interceptions in a single game is staggering. What is even more surprising, is neither one of these defences are all that good. Both are bottom three defences in the Coed 1 division.

While both of these quarterbacks threw for far more interceptions than they would have liked they also threw for far more yards and touchdowns then they usually do to. Presumably, they were taking more risks and that resulted in both more interceptions and more scores.

Whatever the reason might be, the Johnson brothers were not complaining. Not only their team win, but they both had phenomenal games. Quaid Johnson was targeted twelve times and caught ten passes for 88 yards and fives scores. Yes, half of his receptions were for touchdowns. Guess who Party Mix’s second leading receiver was? If you guessed the second Johnson brotherthen you’d be right. Lonnie caught all six passes thrown his way for a total of nearly 40 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, the Johnsons once again came up huge for Party Mix, each recording and interception.

As for Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce, there was a very simple reason as to why they were able to score 34 points in this game: they finally used the women on their team. Marie-Anne Landry-Duval led the team in receiving yards with 60 and Camille Ste-Marie was third with three catches for 30 yards. All in all, they accounted for nearly half of SHCS’ offensive production. While SHCS did not go on to win this one, I think the production of their women is a really good sign. I have definitely handed SHCS a lot of criticism about the talent of their women, but maybe I was wrong. If Landry-Duval and Ste-Marie can keep on producing like they did in this game, I could see SHCS turning their season around and finally managing to get a win versus a Coed 1 opponent.

La Secte (12) vs Yin & Yang (33)

This was actually the first Coed game of the season that I scorekept. This game left me with two major takeaways. First, I realized that La Secte are better then expected, and Yin & Yang are also even worse then I thought.

La Secte are winless on the season, but I see real signs of progress from this team. For starters Raphael Beauchamp can throw a tight and relatively accurate spiral. What he struggles with the most is reading a defence. On the very first play of the game, he didn’t see Matthew Peacock lurking and he threw a soft interception. From that point onwards, he got a lot better. He grew in confidence by completing easy short passes. He got the ball into his receivers hands and let them gain yards after the catch. He did go on to throw two more interceptions, but you could see that he was improving during the game. If Beauchamp has full season under center and he can start learning how to read opposing defences I think he could turn into a very serviceable Coed 2 quarterback and lead La Secte to a few wins. The other issue plaguing La Secte is mental mistakes on defence. In this game, they gave up a 40-yard touchdown on the very last play of the first half. Yin & Yang did not make an insane catch or anything of the like. Instead, La Secte forgot to drop an additional man deep and left Jonathan Weir wide open for the easiest 40-yard touchdown I have ever seen.

As for Yin & Yang they did win, but they did not look super convincing. Their defence struggled to slow the division’s worst offence and ultimately conceded 150 passing yards. Yin & Yang do a lot well defensively. They are all great tacklers, so you very rarely see a short pass go for a long gain. However, they seem just a bit too content to tackle. There is no one shooting or jumping routes. The interceptions they did get were not due to spectacular defensive reads, but rather due to La Secte throwing the ball into their hands. If Yin & Yang want to start beating better teams, their defence will need to start turning tackles into defended passes and interceptions.

Week 6 Team of the Week

Every week, I will name 12 players to the team of the week. If you make the offensive team of the week, you cannot be on the defensive one and vice versa. Since this is coed, there will always be a minimum of two women on the offensive and defensive team of the week. When choosing the players for the team of the week, I do not consider the tier that the players are in. I only consider their achievements.

Offence

Quarterback: Sara Parker (3rd Down For What) 21 completions, 253 passing yards, 7 TDs, 1 INT

Receiver: Alex David (3rd Down For What) 8 receptions, 113, 3 TDs

Receiver: Guillaume St-Jeam (Funtastic 9) 8 receptions, 77 receiving yards, 3 TDs

Receiver: Quaid Johnson (Party Mix) 10 receptions, 88 receiving yards, 5 TDs

Receiver: Marie-Anne Landry-Duval (Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce) 2 receptions, 60 receiving yards, 1 TD

Receiver: Hugo Quintin (Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce) 5 receptions, 116 receiving yards, 1 TD

Defence

Rusher: Matthew Peacock (Yin & Yang) 3 sacks, 1 INT

Defensive Back: Vincent Hamel (Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce) 2 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 TD, 1 defensive TD

Defensive Back: JeremyMurphy (3rd Down For What) 2 tackles, 2 INTs, 1 defensive TD

Defensive Back: Stéphanie Cléroux-Drapeau (Yin & Yang) 1 INT

Defensive Back: Justin Blackie (Fightin’ Tigers) 4 tackles, 1 INT, 1 defensive TD

Defensive Back: Thomas Lalonde-Landry (Les Semi-Croquants) 7 tackles, 1 INT

Week 7 Predictions

Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (2-4) vs Fightin’ Tigers (2-4)

I like the direction Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce are trending in. They thoroughly impressed me with how much they involved their women in the passing game this week versus Party Mix. If they can do that against the Fightin’s Tigers I think they have a very good chance of beating a Coed 1 for the first time all year. I also have a hard time choosing the Tigers to win a game when no one really knows which of their superstars, if any, will show up.

Prediction: Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce

Power Rangers (5-1) vs 3rd Down For What (6-0)

This is definitely the game of the week in Coed. On the podcast, I compared the Pilon brothers to drumsticks on a chicken. One drumstick is great, but for the full experience you really need both. Unfortunately, for Power Rangers, they only have one drumstick and I think that that will cost them in this game. I do not think they can compete with 3rd Down For What’s offensive depth which will force them to play zone coverage and we all know Sara Parker can dissect a zone defence better then any other passer in Coed.

Prediction: 3rd Down For What (6-0)

Funtastic 9 (3-2-1) vs Yin & Yang (2-3-1)

This should be another great came. Funtastic won their first game versus Yin & Yang before drawing their second. While I think this game will be a very close affair, I prefer Funtastic’s defence to Y&Y’s. Funtastic play an airtight man defence. While that forces Y&Y’s Justin Weir to make perfect throws, it also leaves him with a lot of room to run. However, Funtastic have a fantastic rusher in Felix Daoust. Ultimately I think Daoust will neutralize the run threat and Funtastic will win.

Prediction: Funtastic 9

Les Semi-Croquants (3-3) vs La Secte (0-6)

Both of these teams are tracking in opposite directions. After a phenomenal start to the season, Les Semi-Croquants are finally showing signs of weakness. It was also discovered that Mariève Girard struggles against man defences. However, I do not think La Secte have the athletes necessary to man Les Semi-Croquants. I see Girard having a bounce back game in this one and leading Les Semi-Croquants to an important win.

Prediction: Les Semi-Croquants

That does it for this week in Coed. As always, you can reach my by email at [email protected] with any questions, comments,

Good luck to everyone in week 7!
