Co-ed Week 5 Recap

Here we are at the midway point of the season and slowly we are realizing which teams are for real and which team’s path to a championship seems unlikely. This week we got a team that finally cracked that first win of the season after a tough matchup. We also had the clear favorite in this division continue to prove why they are the team to beat. Our other game was quite the nail biter and it came down to a single point. I admire everything that I have seen from this division from pure dominance to positive vibes. This is why I love this division so much, that being said here is what happened this week in the co-ed division.

TC vs. Michael Scott’s Tots

This matchup was a tough one for Vanessa as she was unable to be careful with the ball. It’s not entirely her fault considering the fact that she faced a very tough defense this week. She was able to find her receivers for a whole lot of yardage but unfortunately they were unable to score at the rate they needed to ensure the victory. Vanessa threw for over 220 yards and that’s just the basics for her; she has an incredible arm but she just could not help take the risks and in her case they did not pan out. She threw 4 interceptions one of which was to the reigning defensive player of the year Kenny. Unfortunately for Kenny he endured an injury that kept him off the field for the last 5 or so minutes of the game and those were crucial minutes. However Phuc Pham was able to step in and play the same way Kenny does. Let’s just take a moment to admire Chloe Brazeau-Gelinas who like her hyphenated family name was able to gather 2 interceptions. Chloe was able to camouflage herself behind Vanessa’s receivers just up until the time she pounce and came down with the interceptions. Congratulations to you and I am sure Evan was really happy to build off that momentum.

Speaking of Evan he was simply incredible in this matchup and he was without a doubt the better quarterback. He remained safe with the ball as he’s been all season and although his yardage totals did not matchup with Vanessa they did not need to because his defense gave him some of the best field positioning he could have asked for. He took full advantage and turned the turnovers into points as he threw 5 touchdowns and did it ever seem like he saw nothing but openings in the opposing defense. The reason he’s safe with the ball is because he will not force throws unless he absolutely has to or if he feels there’s no way it can cost his team. Evan enjoys scrambling to find his receivers down the field but he sometimes takes off running if he sees a lot of green in front of him. This game was no different as he scrambled for just under 20 yards but he was able to find the end zone with his feet when he realized his team was covered well.

Sure he got a running touchdown and that’s exciting but what is more exciting in my opinion are long tosses for touchdowns. Can we just agree that Zackary is a touchdown machine? I believe he is because he had 3 catches and they were all for a touchdown. It is unfair to the opposing teams how for a guy whose physique does not scream speed but when he feels like it he is ready to turn on the jets and take off sprinting. Taking nothing away from Zackary but clearly Gerry was able to take some of the coverage away from him due to the fact that he was always open because he just strides into the open space. Gerry was able to find the end zone as well but not with the efficiency of Zack or Phuc who had 1 catch for a touchdown.

It seems as if Michael Scott’s Tots has finally found that fire they kept within and they just unleashed it. They came away with a nice 36-27 victory against TC who just did not seem to be confident in them.

Party Mix vs. Hot-Dawgz

There comes a point in everyone’s season that you know who the heavy favorites are and this season it is indeed Party Mix. Led by Frank at the quarterback position it is simply unfair how he just has his way with opposing defenses. He had another stellar performance this week and it looks like there is simply no stopping him. He just continues to dominate game in and game out. He does it so easily and it’s frightening for any team that could very well be his next victim. Everything he does just seems easy and he can do no wrong. When he gets rushed he escapes with little effort, when he needs to scramble his eyes always look down the field and he usually finds an open receiver. I have yet to see a defense that can stop him and I really hope that someone changes my mind because as it stands right now at this level of play Frank will lead this team to a championship.

Although Frank is pretty outstanding he can’t have the season he has been having by himself. It takes receivers to sometimes make a quarterback comfortable playing their game. Party Mix have a nice handful of receivers that have had major impacts this season and this week’s matchup is no different. 3 different receivers had a touchdown and they have been doing it all season. Ben Parisien has come to a point that he knows what it takes to succeed in this division. He had a nice offensive game this week tallying more than 20 yards a catch and he topped it off with a touchdown. He kept getting open down the field and Frank just keeps on finding him it’s a pretty solid connection they have. Marilou Côté Noël had a tremendous game she was very efficient as she turned 3 catches into 2 touchdowns and she keeps flying under the radar as a target that many people underestimate. Lastly, there is Catherine Piche who is basically the safety net for Frank as she is always open when there are no other options. She was also able to find the end zone twice this game and both times she was kind of a last resort for Frank to find but he did and they put the game away together.

Hot-Dawgz are not a bad team and their record does not tell the full story of what this team is capable of. Sure they have yet to get a win but that’s ok because it is there first season and it’s not like they’re team is playing bad. It’s been tough for them this season but they keep coming and they keep improving and I truly believe that they just need one more piece and they will be in business. Vincent Boutin is not a bad quarterback he gets them points but they have to clean up their defense a little bit. Fix a couple kinks or add a player that has a more defensive mind set. If they had a defensive captain who is all about defense and that knows the strategies that will work they will be in a good place. Until they find that defensive star they will need to find ways to reduce the damage caused to them because initially their offense is good enough to get some wins, it’s just that their defense allows too many points.

The dominant season continued for Party Mix as they came away with a pretty nice 32-18 victory this week. I just want to know if there is a team that can stop their offense and if there isn’t then this division is there’s to lose.

Yin & Yang vs. 3rd Down For What

Easily the best game this week in the co-ed division it was a battle from start to finish. To think that it simply came down to a conversion, Mike Roy had a very good game. The problem is that when it comes to short yardage situations they need to find ways to make it work in their favour. Their offense has been on fire since Mike joined the fray and it has worked up to now. It’s not like it’s completely gone from hero to zero but they just missed one little point but in this game we all know that points matter. The offense is good for this division they can put up points and they can put them up in bunches. This week however the defense needed to make 1 stop and they couldn’t but that’s ok I take nothing away from this defense Yin & Yang have. They have some solid players that can make all the difference in a game on the defensive side of the picture. Conversions are very important and they are indeed the toughest points to get considering the limited space given to achieve them. Yin & Yang are in a good position and they seem to have found what it takes to succeed. I am looking forward to seeing how far they can take this team.

Sara Parker just had a tiny bit of the edge on Mike; they both had 5 touchdown passes but Sara knows how to make the most out of a small amount of space and it helped them this week. She spread the ball well unless it was in the end zone where she had Eric Deschambault open for days. Other than that to get in the best position for her she spread the ball amongst everyone and something she has sure improved on from last season is just that. Last season she was making avoidable mistakes by always trying the big play. She used to force balls in coverage and hope her receivers just came down with it. This season she has changed her playing style for the better and it’s making opposing defenders nervous. Mind you she set up a better team around her and that was the best decision she made. She’s a good quarterback but there were some factors of the game that she had trouble adjusting to. Now she got herself some experienced players from flagplus football and they seem to be clicking on another level.

Eric had probably one of the best games I have witnessed in this division on the receiving end of the ball. There was simply no stopping him, he kept changing his routes and just taking apart what the defense was giving him. Sometimes he used his speed, while other times he used his strength to fight off defenders trying to prevent the ball from getting to him. That level of play led to a game where we saw him come down with 4 touchdown receptions. Those numbers helped him double the amount of touchdowns he had all season. Before this game he had 2 touchdown receptions and that’s not bad but then he got 4 in this game and he jump started his total. If they continue using this momentum they have formed together they will surely be a force to be reckoned with.

3rd Down for What was able to hold off Yin & Yang and they won the conversion battle. Winning the conversion battle ensure them a very hard faught 32-31 victory against Yin & Yang.

Power Rankings

  • 1- Party Mix: There is simply no stopping this team; they just seem to be getting stronger and stronger. With the quarterback play of Frank I believe that this will be their spot for the rest of the season.
  • 2- 3rd Down for What: Hard fought victory keeps them in the number 2 spot in the rankings. They would be number 1 if party mix was not playing near perfect football.
  • 3- Yin & Yang: Even in defeat this team was able to ensure they will not go away without a fight and that’s why they are in this spot right now. They have found the recipe to succeed and they will use it really soon.
  • 4- Michael Scott’s Tots: Finally securing their first victory is the fashion I knew it would only be a matter of time before they found their stride. They must keep this up and they will be contenders like I knew they’d be.
  • 5- TC: Tough loss after a tough week for Vanessa and company has them going down a spot but if there is a team that can come back it is these women from TC.
  • 6- Hot-Dawgz: They are just a step behind every other team in this division. They need some defensive help and if they get that they will be in a better position believe that.

Predictions

Michael Scott’s Tots vs. 3rd down for what

This game will be the game of the week in my opinion. Hopefully Kenny will be back and ready to play because he is the defensive captain of this team and they will need to be strong against Sara and her team if they want to come out victorious. This game will go to the team that defends best and unless Kenny is back the advantage goes to 3rd down for what.

Hot-Dawgs vs. Yin & Yang

Yin & Yang is a wounded animal right now and they are coming off a tough loss and they will look to redeem themselves. Hot-Dawgz is a decent team offensively but unfortunately for Hot-Dawgz they are the team that will get the animal. Unless Hot-Dawgz comes together defensively, I am giving the advantage to Yin & Yang.

TC vs. Party Mix

This game is going to come down to if Vanessa can bounce back in a huge way. If she does then TC will have the advantage but she will need to bounce back against a pretty spectacular defense. We may very well see the first loss for Party Mix but it will rely heavily on the shoulders of Vanessa she can do it but sometimes it is too much. I believe this week it will be too much for her and Party Mix will remain undefeated.

That’s all for me this week, I am expecting nothing less than intriguing football this week in the co-ed division.
