Co-ed Week 2 Recap

Week 2 in the books and each team has shown just what type of season they will have. There was a little bit of everything this week as we had a game that both teams played well and the outcome does not showcase a different level of skill. We also had a huge bounce back performance and lastly we had a dominating performance. In the end, it’s still relatively early in the season but it is shaping up to be quite a battle to claim that top spot. Here is what happened this week in the co-ed division.

Party Mix vs. Michael Scott’s Tots

It was simply another day at the office for François Deslauriers as he once again proves that with the right amount of practice will make a difference. He spread the ball out there with a purpose as he connected with 6 different receivers. To be honest I feel like no matter who you are as long as you are on his team he will ensure you will have an impact on the game. His play calling out there proved to be too much for the opposing defense who is not an easy matchup as they have the reigning defensive player of the year in the co-ed division Kenny Boutilier. That did not seem to affect his mindset as he just stuck to the basics and did whatever it take to get the job done.

He spread the ball for 4 touchdowns to 4 different receivers and he did not look back. He connected with 4 receivers but it seems like his main target was Catherine Piche who caught 6 passes and although the yardage was not a lot it was enough to be considered the safety blanket. She also was one of the 4 receivers with a touchdown reception; not bad considering she has not played in over a year. Marie-Esther Chabot also had an impact on this game as she was the steady mid-range yardage as she made 3 catches for just below 50 yards and she got herself a touchdown reception as well. She was the receiver that was intended for whenever Deslauriers had time in the pocket. Marc-Antoine Bigué and Laurence Lamy were the other two receivers who ended up with a touchdown reception. The chemistry shown by this team is scary good and I believe they are serious contenders for the championship.

Evan Ely Nolet had a good game too considering the pressure put on to him by the opposing defense. That pressure forced Evan to throw a lot of balls away but the veteran instinct in him kicked in and he was as safe as can be with the ball. Although he connected with a pretty impressive athlete who shows that no matter what with the right amount of effort you can make serious strides in this game. Zackary Alberts-Gill who plays on 3 teams and sometimes in the same night shows dedication to this sport and he has an impact no matter where he plays. In this particular game he proved to be a tough receiver to guard as he finished with the 2 touchdowns his team earned in this game. He is a warrior and he gives 110&, it shows that he just goes out there and has a good time and the stats just come with him playing for the fun of it. Although she did not have any touchdown receptions Karina Niboj was always open for those all-important short yardage gains. Karina had 7 catches and it was as if she just went unnoticed by the opposing defence. Never underestimate the women in Michael Scott’s Tots they may look friendly but when it comes time to play they have their game face.

This was a tightly contested matchup but it came back to the quarterback who made the better reads and in this particular match the advantage went to Deslauriers. He led his team to a 24-13 victory.

TC vs. Yin & Yang

With Vanessa Birri unable to make it for this week’s matchup Emilie Carrier took over the offence. Her strength is being a dependable snapper but when she needs to step up and throw the ball she is up for the challenge. Considering she is not a quarterback by trade she could have had a better game but that did not stop her from making a very serious impact on the game. She threw 3 touchdown passes against a defense that was ready to play. Unfortunately for her the pressure and lack of experience at the quarterback position costed her 2 interceptions. Mind you the 2 interceptions were thrown to Andrew Carruthers who was an all-star last season and 2018 FlagPlus Football Hall of Famer Adi Sharma. I am taking nothing away from her but if she had played more Quarterback in her day I believe that this outcome would have been different.

Emilie spread the ball very evenly in this contest and as mentioned before if she had a little bit more of a Quarterbacks intuition it would have made a drastic difference in this matchup. Her main target was Emilie Pfeiffer-Badoux who has also time and time again proven to be a tough receiver to cover. She had 4 catches for fewer than 50 yards and she added a touchdown reception. She was overshadowed in this game by the incredible performance shown by Sabrina Gervais. Sure Sabrina just had 2 catches but those 2 catches were for touchdowns she was able to find the opening in the defense and the vision shown by Emilie helped them connect on 2 huge plays. Unfortunately, for them the outcome was not at all what they wanted. That being said, I believe this team will come together and prove that women can compete with men at all levels.

Last week, for those of you that read my article I stated that Yin & Yang were missing one piece and boy did they ever prove me right with the addition of Michael Roy. Michael was lights out in this game as his Quarterback play was on a level that was tough to contest. He almost eclipsed the 200 yard mark and he topped that off with 5 touchdown passes. He was out there throwing darts and hitting his targets with absolute accuracy. I think there was just once that the throw went where he did not intend it to go but it was thrown with such power that nothing could have cost him. He connected with 3 receivers all game and he picked apart the opposing defense by target one of those three targets and once he realized the defense adjusted he would just switch his target. He just had the defense guessing among those three receivers but he did it in such a way that he would be two steps ahead of the opposing defense.

The three receivers that proved to be too much for the opposing defense were Olivia Sormany, Andrew Carruthers, and Carmine Pollice. Now Olivia proved to me that she is a force to be reckoned with. I personally was not there for this game but I was told that she was a nightmare for the opposition. She had a notch over 70 yards receiving and it came from all sorts of routes. I feel like her and Michael have a chemistry that is strong and it showed as they connected for 2 touchdowns. Andrew on the other hand coming off an All-Star appearance showed just how he got there. He was a dual threat as stated earlier he found a way to intercept a pass and that was not all he also added 2 touchdown receptions of his own in this matchup. Many would agree with me that the ageless wonder Carmine Pollice is a phenomenal athlete and he is showcasing his skills in many ways. He is the defensive captain of this team having them line up in the best possible position. Not to mention his incredible receiving ability and he knows this game so well he can help his team exploit what he sees on the defense.

It was quite a difference from a week ago for Yin & Yang and they proved my theory that they were just missing one key piece and they would be just fine. If they continue this way they will be serious contenders. They came away with 30-20 victory in this week 2 matchup.

Hot-Dawgz vs. 3rd Down For What?

Hot-Dawgz had a rough outing this week as their opposition defense proved to be too strong for them this week. They were simply outplayed in every category. It’s their second game in this division and it was a huge learning experience. It was as if their play calling was known from the start by the opposing defense as nothing they tried worked out. This was a minor setback but this happens to every time at one time or another. Luckily for them it was early on in the season and not in the crucial post season. They will look at this game as running into a brick wall and they will make the necessary adjustments and improve their overall game. That being said it’s ok that they lost because they lost with dignity. They kept their head up and ended on a high note jokingly and having fun. In my opinion that is what makes a good team.

Sara Parker, take a bow you showed me the potential that I knew you had in you and you just flat out made the most out of every situation. She threw over 200 passing yards and she had 6 touchdown passes. She was hungry for this win and she was all about proving all the doubters wrong. Did she ever, she was a gunslinger out there and she made sure nobody besides her receivers were able to get to that ball. I think there was just one instance when she made a bad decision but it was so unexpected due to her incredible play that all it resulted in was a pass defended. Other than that she was absolutely on fire and she proved she was the Quarterback who can turn heads. Spreading the ball well she grew in maturity from last season and she made the right decisions when the time came. She was able to stay cool, calm and collected and made the big way when it mattered in this game.

The outstanding quarterback play did not come as a surprise considering how much damage Sara’s receivers caused the opposing defense. 6 touchdown receptions spread among 5 players. Alexis Gaumont doing what he does best getting open and scoring without hesitation as he did that twice in this game. Alex David was the favorite target for Sara as he came away with catches and the way Sara attacked that defense it was only a matter of time before he found the end zone and that is exactly what he did. Rachel Beaudoin, Eric Deschambault, and Kevin Lubin also found the end zone for a touchdown each. I wonder if when Kevin joined this team fresh off the Championship win in the last season gave Sara all the tips of the trade. If he had anything to do with this recent productivity from Sara then they may very well end up winning the championship. Only time will tell but 3rd Down For What? Is my early pick for championship favorite. It is still early.

This week 3rd down for what? Clobbered the opposition and they came away with an easy 40-0 victory led by the offensive barrage Sara was able to get going early in this game.

Power Rankings

  • 1- 3rd Down for What?: After a dominating performance this week and the impressive play by Sara Parker being the top performing Quarterback this week. They have gone up 1 rank in my rankings.
  • 2- Party Mix: Although they were victorious they had not produced the amount of points to keep that top spot but that does not mean that I count them out entirely. They have decreased 1 rank this week.
  • 3- Yin & Yang: They read and they acted upon my observation and they climbed 3 rankings this week due to their impressive bounce back performance this week.
  • 4- Michael Scott’s Tots: A disappointing performance this week has them reduced 1 ranking this week. But that does not mean that they can’t compete with the top teams. A few kinks and they will definitely have some people talking.
  • 5- TC: Even without their star Quarterback they were able to make some serious strides this week. It kind of makes me wonder how it would have been with their Captain at the helm.
  • 6- Hot-Dawgz: After an impressive debut match last week; this week they were simply outplayed and I hope this is a lesson for them. They should take it and grow from it and see where they can end up.

Predictions

Party Mix vs. 3rd Down For What?

The battle of the top 2 teams in my opinion this could very well a preview of the co-ed final. It is still early on in the season and a lot can change. Although this matchup will come down to which team makes the fewest mistakes. Two good offences makes me believe the first team to make a stop will be in the driver seat.

Hot-Dawgz vs. TC

Battle of the bottom two teams and I truly believe that TC will get their first victory that is of course if they get their All-Star Quarterback back. This will most likely be a low scoring affair but I have been proven wrong in the past. This should be an interesting matchup.

Michael Scott’s Tots vs. Yin & Yang

Lastly, we got the battle of the mid-table. Off a big win Yin & Yang has the momentum going for them. If they can ride that wave and maintain their playing style from this past week I believe they should be victorious.

That’s all for me this week and I am looking forward to this week’s matchup that showcases the level of each team in this division.
