Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 8 update

Welcome to the complete insanity that is the Spring Season of 2019. Time to take a look at what happened, see where I went wrong, again, after a great start to the week and take a glance at what lies ahead for week 9 in this wild & whacky division.  A few random league-wide thoughts will also be shared as some crazy numbers got put up on the board.

I am simply copy/pasting my frustrations with attempting to decipher the possibilities due to all of the roster movement.  I am honestly going nuts with this.  How can people be expected to provide ANY insight when the rosters are as *&^$&% as they are???   We continue to see defaults and teams scrambling on FB or at the complexes to field a squad.  Gents.  A roster of 8 people will NOT cut it in any season but truly is a recipe for disaster in the Spring Season of FPF.

Thoughts & random opinions (league wide)

  • – Kevin Wyeth continues to prove why he has all of the hardware. He continues his assault on defences this Spring.  I am simply leaving this comment here for the rest of the season.  He is back on top for Yards & 2nd for TDs.
  • – Is it just me or does anyone else find it weird to see the same names TWICE in the stat columns? Paul Lapierre is #1 (2 ½ Alkaholiks) and #3 (#NR) on the Receivers list.  Another comment that I am simply leaving here until it no longer applies! (He would be higher but had to play QB at times for #NR)
  • – Simon Dagenais might be having issues in this division but Simon Says is kicking tail in DC. He had a great game going off for 287 yards and 7 TDs this past week.
  • – Matt Kirouac continues his journey of attempting to leave his “rusher” label behind with his second consecutive strong game…8 Rec for 137 yards
  • – Not to be outdone, Jeremy Anderson with a strong 2-way game…9 Rec & 9 Tackles. Very nice!!!
  • – I have to bring this up only because I watched “Bad Blood” on Netflix with my amazing wife this past week, but Declan Montague with a great game posting 11 tackles for Mambo in DE

Division A/B Week #7 review

#NR host the Alpha-T’s

What I wrote: 51 points without Cory Pecker.  What would they have done with him there?  TATs looked truly impressive against YCSWU last week.  Jesse Dupuis continues to impress, and Alexis Gaumont finally woke up last week.  I have said, more than once, that #NR are the best DB team playing but who are in DA.  I might have to change that statement after this game.  Going to be close but I like the gents in orange to win this one

What actually happened: Cory Pecker absent again. He does an AMAZING job with his youth camp.  Absolutely nothing to say against this but it does pose conflicts for his football team.  I do not fault his priorities in the least.  I admire the $%&^ out of him for what he does.  However, his team does get put behind the 8 Ball when he is not there.  Jeff Rosenblatt, regardless of his one game against the Outsiders earlier this year, is NOT Cory Pecker, and their styles are vastly different.  Jesse Dupuis willed his team to victory in this one with a 4TD performance.  With the absence of Alexei Gaumont, they were looking for someone to step up and that was JD Chevalier who hauled in 3TDs.  This game could easily have gone in another direction as #NR finished with 6 (SIX) PDs on the night.  Quaysie Gordon-Maule with a great night…3 TDs on offence and 7 tackles/INT/PD/TD on defence!

Dream Killers face Jasmin N Son

What I wrote: Ah the rematch.  The first game was not close as JNS walked away with a 43-24 victory.  Fred Viens did not have a great game last week and will be anxiously awaiting his opportunity to get the loss out of his mind.  For the Dream Killers, which Jeff Rosenblatt shows up?  The one who rose to occasion against Kevin Wyeth or the one who went slumming with Sean Avraam last week?  I think that Jeff will bounce back but that Frederic does the better job.  JNS for the W

What actually happened: Frederic could not do the better job because Frederic was not there.  Damn these Spring rosters!!  In his absence we saw Tam Vilyadeth under center.  No slouch but this team is NOT built around his strengths.  Hats off to Jeff Rosenblatt and team for executing and getting away with the win on this evening.  This might sound familiar but Quaysie Gordon-Maule with a big game as he ends up with 2 TDs and 4 tackles on Defence.  #NR and Dream Killers shar a roster for the most part.  Would be curious to know what would have happened for JNS with Fred Viens and Anthony Vendrame present.  Oh well…they missed, and DK with the WIN!

Dirty Dawgs host the Braves

What I wrote: Here’s hoping that the FB wall stays quiet for a second week.  Not that it will make much of a difference.  The Braves are simply the better team.  Jonathan Maheu is having an extremely controlled season, even without Georges Gariepy who has only made 2 games so far.  Alex Pilon & MA Lapointe have been difference-makers on both sides of the ball and I cannot see that trend ending this week.

What actually happened:  The FB boards were quiet but that did not stop the Dirty Dawgs from forfeiting their second game this season.  Truly disappointing.  I get the fact that you pay your fines and what have you, but people are here to play ball and not get comped for missing games.  A roster should have at least 10 people on it…C’mon Man!

2 ½ Alkaholiks face the Dad Bod

What I wrote: On paper this looks like a great game.  Both teams sit at 3-4 and lost last week after a victory the week before.  Both have some big-time play makers (Paul Lapierre & Vinny Gualano to name a couple) and both squads have QBs who can be very hot or completely off.  I don’t think that Paul Lapierre will let his team lose this game.  His presence and leadership will be the difference

What actually happened: I was asked to throw for the Alkaholiks but was stuck in Moncton on game night.  Would have loved to have played this game.  Paul Lapierre took the helm, unselfishly costing himself stats for ROTY but got the W!  Always interesting to see stat lines that are so varied.  Losing QB gets 243 yards.  Winning QB gets 145 yards.  This league NEEDs to start tracking turnovers on 4th down.  It is as important, if not MORE, than an INT.  Both QBs with 5 TD/ 1 INT stat lines but the Alks take the in.  Paul added a rushing TD, but the difference was the turnovers that are NOT tracked!  $ different receivers hit the end zone for the Alks, while Jordan Allard does the damage for the Dad Bod with 3 TDs.

BYOB host Lightweight

What I wrote: This will go down as an upset because of their current records but BYOB are playing MUCH better football at this point in the season than Lightweight.  The two teams had dramatically different starts to the season and are currently going in different directions.  Mathieu Rene is playing his style of ball and Simon Dagenais is not getting the support he needs.  Both teams will be 4-4 after this one

What actually happened: No shock.  Mathieu Rene continues his fine play, spreading the ball around.  A more consistent receiving corps is really helping his consistency.  4 different receivers found the end zone with Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon hitting it twice.  I really think that this team will be a TOUGH out in the playoffs.  For Lightweight, KUDOS to them for sticking with things, but they are definitely showing the cracks in their team.  Even adding ANP and Robert White for this match did not help them.  Unfortunately, they are playing above their weight (hahah) and it is beginning to show.

Outsiders square off with YCSWU

What I wrote: Game of The Week material right year.  YCSWU took the first meeting 38-34 and I know that Kevin Wyeth has had this game circled on his calendar ever since.  The two QBs lead DA/B in every relevant category and are in control of their offences.  Both have big play talent (Pat Jerome vs Anthony Vendrame) and both teams give up yards on defence.  The edge in this game will be Serge Pilon.  Outsiders even the season series in my mind.

What actually happened: So, my comment had Serge Pilon being the difference.  I also thought that he would be snapping the ball.  In his place we saw Donald “Bombsquad” Shepherd getting the ball back.  No slouch here but a different match up appears.  YCSWU lived up to their acronym, or at least Justin McLean did.  In recent weeks he has decided to prove to the league that he is the TOP DOG and he definitely proved it again in this game.  8-110-5 TDS in a “prove it” match up between these two teams.  Alex Holowach leading the way to a “50 Burger” for YCSWU also has him thinking about the QBOTY award.  This team lives/breathes/dies by their offence.  Hard to stop them but, teams have shown, you can outscore them.  Will be fun come the playoffs.

Carmine’s Players of the Week

Quaysie Gordan-Maule (#NR) 4-64- 3 TDs & 7 tackles/1 INT/1 PD/1TD on defence

Quaysie Gordan-Maule (Dream Killers) 5-58-2 TDs & 4 tackles on defence

Alex Holowach (YCSWU) 20/28 & 7 TDs

Justin McLean (YCSWU) 8-110-5 TDs

The week ahead

Outsiders host #NR

The first meeting was a close game with the Outsiders proving victorious 33-32 (damn those pesky coverts).  The Outsiders find themselves struggling a bit recently, but they have a great roster and are led by the legend himself, Kevin Wyeth.  #NR has been searching for their identity as their QB has been AWOL this season.  If everyone is there, which is the LOADED question this season, then I am leaning towards the Outsiders.  If people are missing, then I am REALLY leaning towards the Outsiders as KW has not missed a game.

Jasmin N Sons take on the Braves

Frederic Viens missed last week, and it cost his team dearly.  Regardless of what he does this week the Braves are winning this game.  Georges Gariepy will not be eligible for the playoffs, but they have so much depth, and the TOP defence, that they can make up for it.

Dirty Dawgs try to take on Lightweight

So, at the risk of jinxing things, the first game was a 60-0 default.  Dirty Dawgs are coming off yet another default.  Can they even field a squad?  In a season where DD are all but eliminated, will they put in the effort to show up?  Lightweight brought out some heavyweight backs ups this past week in ANP and Rob White.  If this game happens, will that be enough?  Two sinking ships match up and I am hoping for something beyond a train wreck

Dad Bod rematch with 2 ½ Alkaholiks

Ah the beauty of a short week.  A 39-31 loss has Sean Avraam and squad ready to avenge things.  Vinnie Gualano was absent but so was Joey Taylor (which took away potential ROTY Paul Lapierre who had to play QB).  Dad Bod hold one of the final playoff spots, but I do not see them moving forward in this game.  Paul Lapierre with 10 receptions leading them to victory

BYOD take on YCSWU

Athletes abound in this one.  Mathieu Rene is playing well, and BYOD have size & talent everywhere.  YCSWU have the top offence in FPF at this moment but, if anyone is going to provide an upset, it will be BYOD.  I don’t see it happening, but it could!!!

Alpha-T’s take on the Dream Killers

Jesse Dupuis vs. Jeff Rosenblatt

The rabbit vs. the tree.  Completely different styles.  Jesse is high intensity and Jeff is ball control.  If Jeff is allowed to set the pace, then this will be a sleeper/boring game.  If Julien Paiement is able to put pressure and not allow Jeff to sit “comfortably until you are numb”, then this will be a beat down for the Alpha-T’s.  Orange for the W
