Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 6 Review and the Playoff match ups take form

35+ Division

Carmine’s Coffin Corner

Week 5 recap and a look ahead to Week 6

Week 5 is now done and done.

We are approaching the time of the season where playoff seeding begins to take form.  The playoff picture for Tier 1 is already set and both Tier 2 and the Draft Division can be finalized this week.

Random 35+ thoughts

  • FPF teammates Robbie Robinson & Brian Martin look like safe bets to take home hardware this season as they each lead their respective category in all KPIs. Robbie is making a mess of the QB Stats in his “rookie” year while Brian has been money game in & game out
  • Several close games this week, including 2 that were decided on the last play. Seems to be a common theme across the divisions.
  • The Rossie boys continue to lead the QB Rushing race. Brother Jason leads Brother Jordan 153 – 148 so far.  While it means absolutely nothing, I do find it interesting dinner table material for them.
  • New QB…same result for the Spitfire. 2 weeks left to get things figured out.
  • Grumpy Old X-Men and JMJ also have 2 weeks left to find a way to win a game this season. I think that the best shot either team has will be JMJ this week as they take on PAZAZZ.
  • JP Moreau from the Spitfire was everywhere on defence last Thursday finishing with a season high 12 Tackles on Defence. To put that in perspective, of the 95 players who have recorded a defensive stat this season, only 22 players have recorded 12 Tackles cumulative thus far.

Random league thoughts

  • D1: Not only are the Braves the top offence in D1, they are blessed with a tremendous number of playmakers on Defence as well. It was on display last week as they finished with 7 PDs and 2 Sacks in their win over #2 YCSWU
  • D1: 2 of the games were decided on the last play this week.
    • o FMS went for 2 on the last play against DA Finest but came up short
    • o Got Skills went for 2 on the last play against STL and also came up short
  • D2: Dylan Taylor with a double dip Monday as he also led the Underachievers 2.0 to a win. @ wins on a Monday night sets the tone for a good week
  • D2: Taco Tuesday with their second consecutive loss. While they did hold #NR to less than 59 points, their offence was nowhere to be found as they fell 26-14
  • D3: Backyard Bullies blew a 14-0 halftime lead as KGP figured things out and adjusted things to score 24 second half points in their comeback win.
  • D3: The Burrell Boys were on full display as P.O.P. came out to play and put up 46 points. Craig O’Brien with a ho-hum 19-30-296-7 TD day leaning on Tanner & Cullen for 5 of those TDs.
  • D3: JYD crashing to earth with a 41-15 kenneling by Greendale Human Beings. Jason Rossie was muzzled on this evening as GHB forced 3 INTs.  JYD’s Division leading offence was really held in check
  • D4A: The Outlaws, led by Stephen Harripersaud (35+ QB) handed C2E Inc. their first loss of the season 48-40. Harripersaud finished 29-32-221-7 TDs and now leads D4A in Passing Yards & Passing TDs.
  • D4A: The Infantry roll to a 6-0 start. Several players on this squad also comprise the heart of JYD and have a combined 11-1 record so far.  Not bad!
  • D4B: offence was on full display in the game between Team Ethnik and the Warhawks. The Warhawks prevailed 46-43 led by their two headed monster, Alex De Luca.  He finished with 5 passing TDs, 2 INTs on Defence, including a Pick 6, and went 5-32 yards rushing the ball.
  • D4B: BBallers dropped 50 on the Dream Chasers. Gianni Casati with a nice night finishing 17-23-280-8 TDS.  His main target was Vincent Beauregard who totaled 9-115-5 TDs.

WEEK 6 REVIEW (finally got onto the field so I might have missed some of the action)

PAZAZZ 46 FPF 47

What I wrote:  I really like what I saw from Eugene McLaren last week.  Using his legs to get things started and Rob Allen seemed to be a part of the game plan.  Guess what?  FPF also have a mobile QB and a monster receiver of their own in Robbie Robinson and Brian Martin.  I do think that we will see Mr. Allen keeping an eye on Mr. Martin in this game as he has the size to match up.  Of course, that leaves Lonnie Johnson and Tim O’Hara for the others to contend with.  FPF have a big receiving corp.  While PAZAZZ will keep it close, I think FPF remains on course for a perfect season

What actually happened: Yet another one of those games that came down to the final play.  However, it really should not have finished that way.  Robbie Robinson and Brian Martin continued to be Fantasy Football studs as they paced FPF once again.  Brian finishing 9-127-3 TDS and RR 22-27-317-7 TDs.  RR also tossed an INT and that is what made things so interesting.  PAZAZZ scored late in the game and RR simply had to run out the clock.  He drove the length of the field but then was picked off by Rich Lachance with 2 plays left.  2 plays later, including a 34-yard TD bomb from Eugene McLaren to Marc Farley set the stage for some late game drama.  Down by 1 PAZAZZ went for the win, which I will always agree with, but came up short.  Steve Landry & Rob Allen each with 3 TDs on the night to pace PAZAZZ.

Spitfire 33 Old Age Outlaws 41

What I wrote:  After back to back weeks of facing the two top offences in the division the OAO get a bit of a breather as they look to wrangle the Spitfire, who have struggled to put up points this season.  They have only outscored two teams so far (both of who are winless) and can look to their defence (4 PA from being the top in the division) for the reason why they are at .500 so far with a 2-2-1 record.  Unfortunately, this is an offensive game and points will be needed.  For the OAO, Stephen Harripersaud is having his usual type of season with 22 TDs vs. only 3 INTs.  His grind it down style of offence works well for him and keeps the ball away from the defence.  For the Spitfire offence it has been the Domenic Benevento show so far but they will need more balance if they are going to win this game.

What actually happened:  Stephen Harripersaud had a great week.  First, he lit things up in D4A (good for him) and then he lit things up in 35+ (&^*$%#&^@!!!!).  He was in control in this game as he calmly finished 28-36-262-6TDs and drove the Spitfire defence nuts with a combination of short crossing patterns and deep ball TDs when they stepped up.  Josh Levine was busy as he finished with 10-78-3TDs on the night.  For the most part the Spitfire offence matched them step for step and this game, like the FPF vs. PAZAZZ game, came down to the last play.  Down by 8 with 5 plays to go the Spitfire offence marched down to the OAO 7-yard line.  Unfortunately, they were unable to finish the drive and Adam Durant picked off the last throw of the game.  As mentioned, JP Moreau had a monster game on defence and also paced the offence with 7 Receptions for 60 yards.  Jimmy Coupethwaite was the red zone target as he finished with 4 TDs on his 4 Receptions.

Polvige 45 Grumpy Old X-Men 27

What I wrote:  Ryan Kastner has had a very productive rookie season in the 35+ Division, sitting in the middle of the pack with 21 TD passes so far and only 4 INTs.  His opposite number, Jordan Rossie, has had a bit more challenging season making the adjustment.  People forget that, regardless of the age restriction, there are a tremendous number of talented football players in this division.  Jordan seems determined to take his lumps and improve his pocket presence.  Curious to see how long his competitive spirit will allow this to happen as his mobility gives him a huge advantage when he uses it.  Should be a fun game but I think that Polvige will take this one.

What actually happened:  I am not quite sure, but this might be the first time that I have seen every player on the roster catch a ball in the same game.  To say that Ryan Kastner spread things around in this game is the ultimate definition of “understatement!”  Even Ryan caught a ball as he hauled in a 29-yard TD pass from Dave Allen.  I think that he might be framing that one on the mantle above the fireplace!  For the GOXM, they never really got on track in this one.  Jordan Rossie took a knee to the head on an early collision and that seemed to throw things off.  While he did show off his mobility finishing with 43 yards and a TD rushing the ball, he was held to 7-23-134 Yards when throwing.

Pacemakers 40 JMJ 26

What I wrote:  Speaking of mobile QBs, here is the other J. Rossie for your viewing pleasure.  He has come a long way in the past 5 years in terms of decision making and not allowing his emotions get away from him.  He still has one of the uglies throwing motions this side of Philip Rivers, but it gets the job done.  As for JMJ, this is quickly becoming a season to forget.  The boast the worst PA in the division and an offence that simply does not hit pay dirt often enough.  Moving the ball is NOT the issue, Cory Johnson sits second in passing yardage in only 4 games.  However, his 9 INTs lead the Division and is killing them at this point.  The Pacemakers have several ballhawks on D and Jason is going to drive JMJ nuts with his legs.  Look for the frustrating season to continue for JMJ

What actually happened:  Every time I looked over in this game it was the Chris Brockwell show.  Covering all sorts of ground in his role as the deep safety, he forced several errant throws and still got his hands on2 balls for INTs.  Offensively he scored a nice TD and had an exciting 25-yard reception on his other opportunity.  QB Jason Rossie did not gain any yards rushing in this one but definitely bought time for his receivers.  Robert White was the busy one for the Pacemakers finishing 7-85-2 TDs.  Funny how stats can lie.  Cory Johnson had similar numbers to his counterpart 17-29-185 against 17-30-192.  The difference was the 3 INTs that he tossed while Rossie kept things clean on that end.  Having said that, JMJ did get their hands on several balls finishing with 5 PDs on the evening.  If a few of them get caught, this could have been a different ball game.

Monster 32 OAS 41

What I wrote:  Fairly simple for OAS.  Win the game and they clinch the first-round bye in the playoffs.  For Monster, they are looking to avenge their earlier loss where they were without their QB, Andy Peterkin.  Peterkin has missed considerable time this season and Craig O’Brien has done a great job filling in.  However, this offence becomes extremely dangerous when both are there and they use the halfback option.  Most teams simply do not have 2 good rushers able to contain the two-headed “Monster”.  OAS do have those players and should be in a good position.  They also have an excellent receiving corps, when Cory Pecker is there.  Kevin Wyeth has stepped up to become one of the dominant receivers in the division, but he gets moved into the QB role when Pecker is absent.  Not a bad thing but it does remove a weapon.  Look for OAS to close out the bye with a W.

What actually happened: This was a weird game to watch.  Early on Monster QB, Andy Peterkin, was able to use his legs to both buy time and move the ball.  A 9-yard TD run was followed up by a 33-yard scamper where no one seemed to want to tackle him.  After that, Brian Tock seemed to get the better of Andy and forced some off-balance antics.  For OAS, while Kevin Wyeth was held in check with only 2 receptions (both for TDs), it was the Jason Prince and Shane Williams show.  Shane scored a 30-yard TD where he went through the Monster defence for 20 yards with no one willing to flag him.  The closest one to making a play was the official.  Cory Pecker finished with 19-27-6 TDs in this one.  While the score showed a 9-point final, it really did not feel that way.

Carmine’s POTW

  • Brian Martin (FPF) 9-127-3 TDs
  • Rob Robinson (FPF) 22-27-317-7 TDs
  • Eugene McLaren (PAZAZZ) 19-29-230-7 TDs
  • Josh Levine (OAO) 10-78-3 TDs
  • Stephen Harripersaud (OAO) 28-36-262-6 TDs
  • JP Moreau (Spitfire) 7-60 and 12 Tackles on D
  • Cory Pecker (OAS) 19-27-254-6 TDs
  • Chris Brockwell (Pacemakers) 2-36-1 TD and 3 Tackles, 2 INTs on D

Week 6 preview

Old Age Outlaws vs. Pacemakers

This should be a really interesting game as it showcases two truly different QB styles.  Stephen Harripersaud pushes the 5-yard QB limit on each play and literally takes the Rusher out of the game with his quick decision making and even quicker release.  Jason Rossie almost tries to involve the Rusher on every play and takes much longer to get rid of the ball.  One is high control/low risk, while the other almost seems like they are careening down a cliff side with a broken hand brake but looking to get things done in one play.  Josh Levine and Chris Brockwell are the “big play” individuals to look for on each squad.  Look for OAO to take this one due to their ability to send multiple rushers at Jason Rossie.

O.A.S. vs. Grumpy Old X-Men

On paper this looks like it will be a blow out.  OAS have yet to suffer a loss and GOXM have yet to taste victory.  From a PF/PA perspective OAS are #2 on both sides while GOXM are dead last in scoring and second last in giving up points.  Jordan Rossie is going to have to use his legs in this game in order to slow things down.  The defence from OAS likes to stand tall and shoot around so quick hitting passes tend to blow up on the offence.  OAS should run away with this game.

JMJ vs. PAZAZZ

Fairly simple for JMJ.  If they want any chance of avoiding FPF in the opening round of the playoffs, they must win this game.  Not an easy task as Eugene McLaren is playing some good football right now, two straight close losses to FPF and OAS are nothing to be ashamed of, and PAZAZZ seem to be peaking at the right time.  For JMJ to win this game Cory Johnson cannot turn the ball over as he has been doing.  The JMJ offence has proven that they can move the ball but whenever they make a mistake it seems to be an INT and not a PD.  Look for PAZAZZ to win by 2 scores.

FPF vs. Polvige

The battle of the “rookie” QBs as Robbie Robinson and Ryan Kastner face off in the rematch.  FPF took the first game 41-32 and a similar score would not shock me in the least.  Brian Martin has flashed glimpses of dominance in previous seasons but 2020 is his coming our party as he and Robbie have been on the same page virtually all season long.  Somehow, I do not see that changing as no one on Polvige has the size and speed to match up with him.

Monster vs. Spitfire

An opening round preview.  These two teams are locked into a first-round playoff match up so this should give us an idea what to expect.  Monster is at their best when both QBs are present.  Andy Peterkin and Craig O’Brien have driven defences nuts this season when they present the dual-QB option in the backfield.  Either of them has had individual success but that dual option is where they shine.  Offensively they have spread the ball around well with the one constant being their Center, Marco Ottoni, who currently leads all Monster receivers in all categories.  For the Spitfire, they are looking to hit the playoffs on a roll.  Consistency has been their biggest issue thus far, both on the field and from a roster perspective.  They need to solidify both if they want to avoid an early end to their 2020 season.

That’s all for today! Thanks for taking the time to read along.
