Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 5 Recap

Carmine’s Coffin Corner
Div A/B Week 5 Recap
Spring 2019

Week 5 is in the books. Time to take a look at what happened, see if I was completely out to lunch with my choices last week, and take a glance at what lies ahead for week 4 in this whacky division. A few random league-wide thoughts will also be shared. I will also take a moment to outline my top 3 choices for the year end awards as we have reached the mid-way point.

Congrats to the Toronto Raptors. Quite the achievement.

I am simply copy/pasting my frustrations with attempting to decipher the possibilities due to all of the roster movement. Things continue to be crazy with the inter-division play as we have a handful of players who must choose which team they will play for.

Thoughts & random opinions (league wide)

Kevin Wyeth continues to prove why he has all of the hardware. He continues his assault on defences this Spring. I am simply leaving this comment here for the rest of the season

The league was fairly quiet this week with very few teams putting up big offensive #s. There were two exceptions, and both came from the top division.
YCSWU & 2 ½ Alkaholiks put 80 points, 520 yards, and 13 TDs combined. Horrible job on converts

Outdoing them were the Outsiders and Dream Killers who combined for 86 points, 590 yards, and 13 TDs. Much better job on the converts. The refs were busy with the bean bags

Serge Pilon responding to his brother’s big game last week went off for 7-170-3 TDs
Is it just me or does anyone else find it weird to see the same names TWICE in the stat columns? Paul Lapierre is #1 (2 ½ Alkaholiks) and #4 (#NR) on the

Receivers list. Another comment that I am simply leaving here until it no longer applies!

Domenic Benevento (2 ½) having one of his better offensive games finishing 9-86-3 TDs

Alex Holowach with good balance as 3 different receivers with multiple TDs

Andrew Carruthers (Sweat & Beers) helped his team get their first win as he lit things up for 6-120-4TDs

Jon Lyristis (Keyport Lock) played the role of Swiss Army Knife this week. 3/3 for 16 yds throwing the ball. 3-29-2 TDs as a receiver, made a tackle, and rushed 2/24 with a TD. Big part of his team’s 53-6 victory. Good week for Jeff Rosenblatt has he goes big during his two games

Yet another 35+ QB with a nice night as Eugene McLaren led the Longhorns to victory finishing 15/24/ 6 TDs and adding an INT on defence

Speaking of defence…Jordan Allard (Super Saiyans) with the INT hat trick in their win over the Legend of 7
Finally, willing to bet he had nightmares, but Matthew Peacock from Ballz Deep finished his game with 4 PDs. Get some hands son!!!!

Division A/B Week #4 review

#NR bow out to the Braves 36-26

What I wrote: A tough loss last week for #NR has them anxious to get back on the field, but their task is not an easy one as they face the Braves. Cory Pecker looked good last week but the Braves boast the top defence in the division. Roster variables make this hard to pick but if the Braves are complete then they are going to win this game, especially if Alex Pilon is present.

What actually happened: The Braves had their full squad out and were in control of this one. Watch the film for more details. Other than one off series, Jonathan Maheu played his normal game, finishing with 235 yards & 5 TDs. He was missing his big man Georges Gariepy, but Mike Pierrecin stepped up finishing with 3 TDs to lead the team. On one of them it looks like no one wants to flag him as he literally goes through the defence. #NR seemed to be missing a spark and that could be attributed to the absence of both Moses brothers. Paul Lapierre played big (8-81-3 TDs) but the rest of the team was off by a step.

Jasmin N Sons take out the Dirty Dawgs 38-18

What I wrote: Speaking of those roster variables…hopefully the Dirty Dawgs have the spent the week ensuring they can field a team. I like Ryan Lelinowski and Dave Chityat a lot. They are both amazingly talented players and good human beings off the field. However, their GM skills need some work! For Jasmin N Sons I think this is the week that they right their listing ship. Frederic Viens is playing well, and I think this game matches up well for them. JNS with the win

What actually happened: Dirty Dawgs again with some last moment recruiting to field a squad. I do believe I have called them a very fast team on multiple occasions. That will stop if they keep recruiting Derek Kastner…LOL! JNS in control of this game throughout. Frederic Viens tossing 2 TDs to both M-A Viens and Anthony Brisebois to lead the team to victory. Anthony Vendrame was held to only 2 receptions offensively but made up for things by pilfering two balls on defence.

Dream Killers SHOCK the Outsiders 45-41

What I wrote: Which QB tosses for the Dream Killers? Jeff Rosenblatt & Mario Porreca have both started 2 games and actually have similar numbers thus far. Unfortunately, they also have identical won/lost records at 0-2. One of them will fall to 0-3 as the Outsiders boast the top QB at this moment in Kevin Wyeth. Look for this one to be over by the half.

What actually happened: This goes down as my triple paddle defibrillator shock of the week. Jeff Rosenblatt with the stat line of his DA/B career finishing the night 28/43/294 with 7 TDs. He definitely played the ball control game for the Dream Killers ad Kevin Wyeth was as efficient as can be going 16/18/296 with 6 TDs. The extra possession was the difference in this one. As mentioned earlier, Serge Pilon proved that he is also rocket-propelled finishing with 170 yards on his 7 receptions (24-yard avg) and 3 TDs. He was matched on the other side of the field by Quaid Johnson who had a big night with 7-107-2 TD numbers. Pat Jerome had the big stats on defence with 7 tackles and 3 PDs but if he converts any of those PDs into INTs we have ourselves a different ending.

2 ½ Alkaholiks fade against YCSWU 50-30

What I wrote: Both teams moved the ball up & down the field last week. Both teams gave up a ton of points/yardage as well. Two veteran QBs will be facing two very fast rushers (Chris Milard & Brandon Aylward) so that should also be fun. This game also poses another roster challenge as Danny D’Amour must decide who to suit up for as he plays for both teams…unless he pulls a disappearing act ala Vendrame in order to avoid hurting anyone’s feelings!! Hard to pick against YCSWU the way they are playing but I have never walked onto a field expecting to lose. My prediction for this game is offensive fireworks…

What actually happened: 80 points and 540 yards of total offence. The bean bags were moving. A great back & forth first half had us at 30-24 for YCSWU. A much tamer second half began with a turnover on downs for 2 1/2, followed by a quick TD drive by Alex Holowach and it was simply “keep away” from that point on. Unsung hero of the game was actually Alex Holowach rushing for YCSWU, finishing with 2 PDs (several on converts that are not counted) and using his long arms to disrupt throwing lanes on multiple occasions. Add in the fact that he went 21/26/243 with 7 TDs on offence and there is your POTG

Dad Bod knock off Lightweight 28-6

What I wrote: I feel bad about the number of times I say this but, unfortunately, it is a reality. For the Dad Bod to win this game Sean Avraam needs to play better football and he needs to start making his best players win games for him. Vinny Gualano and AJ Gomes are averaging 2 receptions/game COMBINED. After a week off, Lightweight take the field as the only team in DA/B with a perfect record. Simon Dagenais remains my pick for top story of S2019 so far. Dad Bod have more talent but have not really put it together yet this season. If they ever do, then they have the potential to be a really good team. Just not happening yet so I will stay on the Lightweight bandwagon.

What actually happened: And the magic has faded. After doing an incredible job of recruiting thus far Simon Dagenais was struggling to field a roster this week. Dad Bod did not play one of their better games overall, but it was enough on this evening. Vinny Gualano decided to show up and he was the big man on campus for this event. Both of his receptions ended up in major scores and he added a 3rd TD on defence, returning an INT for 6 points.

Alpha-T’s shocked by BYOB 29-28

What I wrote: Two teams headed in opposite directions. Mathieu Rene needs to step things up. A more consistent offensive roster would help him enormously as only 2 players have hit double digits for receptions thus far. This is a BIG team, so they can/should be doing a better job on defence. Unfortunately, they run into the hottest team in DB right now in the Alpha-T’s. Jesse Dupuis is playing some really good football and I keep waiting for Alexis Gaumont to explode

What actually happened: I guess that I will need to wait another week on Alexis Gaumont. Not as big a shock as the Dream Killers / Outsiders game, but this is definitely an upset by BYOB. Mathieu Rene with his best game thus far. He finished 17/23 with 4 TDs. Lack of turnovers helps your team. Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon with a nice night finishing with a TD and an INT. Mathieu Houle led the way offensively for the Alpha-T’s with 7-61-2 TDs. How big of a role does Mike Pierrecin play for this squad? He was missing, and it played a factor on Jesse Dupuis on this night as he finished with season low 108 yards passing. There was some controversy on a convert as a “supposed” early whistle took away an INT/PAT from Jesse Dupuis which proved to be the final point difference in the game

The week ahead

Looking back at the season so far I keep getting surprised every week with the results of at least 1 game and I think to myself: “Wow! You really have no clue what is happening!” Out of curiosity I decided to look back at my predictions thus far and feel a bit better. 20-9-1 so far so I am not completely out to lunch. Not quite ready to head to Vegas and bet the mortgage but still…
Jasmin N Sons take on the Dream Killers

The Dream Killers got their first win of the season last week in dramatic fashion by knocking off the Outsiders. Jeff Rosenblatt with a night to remember indeed. Having said that, this team has rotated the QB spot thus far which really does not help with stability. Jeff will continue their streak of alternating QBs every two games as he suits up this week. JNS had a convincing win over the Dirty Dawgs and had a great offensive showing against YCSWU the week prior. I like how Frederic Viens is figuring out the offensive pieces to his puzzle, because like so many other teams, it is a different puzzle each week. If he gets his full squad out (Pat Jerome, Tam Vilyadeth, Anthony Vendrame) then they are going to be a tough out. M-A Viens remains the rock of the offence but Frederic needs the others around him to really make things happen. I think that this trend continues, and they win a high-scoring affair.

Dirty Dawgs face the 2 ½ Alkaholiks
Hopefully the DD have spent the past week recruiting players and we will not see any last-minute FB posts looking for help! This team has talent on their roster, but their roster has not been present. SO hard to build any continuity or rhythm when you are continually shuffling the deck. 2 ½ must be breathing a sigh of relief as they get their QB back after 2 weeks of gallivanting around Greece. This offence is built around Joey Taylor’s strengths and while his replacement put up big yardage, they are not built to go score for score with the top offences. Joey does a great job of slowing things down and keeping his team involved. I look for them to even their record this week.

Dad Bod host the Outsiders

Dad Bod have won ugly this season but somehow sit at 3-2. Vinny Gualano finally showed up last week and demonstrated why he can be one of the top players in FPF when he wants to. Sean Avraam continues to frustrate me as a prognosticator with his inconsistencies. Watched him last week and he seems to be second guessing his own play calling at times. Go with the call and throw the ball! On the flip side will be a very annoyed Outsiders squad. Kevin Wyeth had a near-flawless outing last week and still lost the game. Pat Jerome had the chance to shut things down and did not do it. Look for these two to have HUGE games on Monday night. Outsiders with the win.
YCSWU vs. the Braves

Game of the Week material here. Need to add that dreaded caveat “if both rosters are there.” YCSWU continues to pour on the offence. Alex Holowach has looked really good so far and he has a multitude of offensive weapons around him. This is a team built to score, only team over 200 points this season, but they also give up a bunch of points. They really remind of the Edmonton Oilers of the ‘80s, playing fire wagon hockey and winning games 7-5. They will be faced by the top defence in the division, don’t let the Dad Bod PA fool you, the Braves are THE top defence. Their only achilles heal thus far has been missing players on occasion. Their one loss has an asterisks (*) next to it as Jonathan Maheu was absent. Last week was Georges Gariepy. When everyone is there, the Braves remain the top team. Not as fun to watch as YCSWU, but they get the job done.

Lightweight look to rebound against #NR

The bubble burst last week for Lightweight as they lost their first game of the season. The revolving roster finally caught up to them. Does he have any surprises up his sleeve for this week? This has been a revolving door offence for Simon Dagenais thus far. 13 players have caught a pass and only 2 receivers have hit double digits for receptions. Those 2 have caught 50% of Simon’s completions so far. Not rocket science to figure out where the ball is going. #NR has also been plagued by roster issues. They sit at 1-4 but have faced the Braves twice, YCSWU, and the Outsiders. Not an easy schedule so far. I think that they are the top DB team playing. Unfortunately, they find themselves in DA. This week they match off against a DB team and will double their win total.

Alpha-T’s against BYOB

Ah the rematch. A scheduling quirk has these teams playing each other in back to back week. So, was last week an off week for the Men in Orange or did the loss of Mike Pierrecin make that much of a difference for Jesse Dupuis? Time will tell. If Mike is back this week then their offence will continue to roll. His attitude and positivity are infectious, and he makes play after play for this team. On the other side we have a BYOB squad on a bit of a roll. They have lost a couple of really close games (1 & 2 pts) and could easily by 4-1 at this point, in spite of their early inconsistent play. Mathieu Rene has put together back-to-back solid games and, very quietly, Sebastien Crisi-Lauzon has snuck up into the 2-Way Player race. Normally the big man is hard to overlook but he has not been that flashy thus far, simply effective. I really don’t see Jesse Dupuis being that off in back to back games. Look for the Men in Orange to take the rematch but it will be a close score.
