Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 4 Review & a look ahead

35+ Division

Carmine’s Coffin Corner

Week 4 recap and a look ahead to Week 5

Week 4 is now history.

Before we take a look at FPF just a couple of quick thoughts on the Super Bowl.  While I am a long time Niners fan, I am happy for the Chiefs.  Down 20-10 most people at the resort where I am, in the Bahamas, yes, it is a tough life, thought this game was over.  Did I mention that this is a work trip?  Really tough life.  The Chiefs proved that resiliency, determination, and attitude are amazing things to have and never stopped working.  Amazing life lesson for people paying attention.  I also think that as much as the Chiefs kept fighting, the Niners did not play with a sense of urgency in the 4th quarter.

Random 35+ thoughts

  • We now have more winless teams than we do undefeated teams as we reach the halfway mark
  • O.A.S. lead Tier 1 with a perfect 4-0 mark
  • Grumpy Old X-Men trail Tier 2 with a perfect 0-4 mark
  • JMJ trail the Division Tier with a perfect 0-4 mark
  • Robbie Robinson (FPF) is the front runner for QBOTY as he leads in TDs, Pass Yards, & Completions.
  • Brian Martin (FPF) is part of the reason for RR’s success as he leads all Receivers in Yards & TDs, and stands second in Receptions
  • The Rossie boys stand 1-2 in rushing yards this season. Will be interesting to see who sits atop the leaderboard at year end.
  • Odd stat is that Jon Moodie stands 3rd on the Rushing list with only 1 GP at QB

Random league thoughts

  • D1: Braves & FMS put on a show. ANP & Jon Maheu combined to go 45-60 for 573 yards and 16 TDs in this game.  A 75% completion combined is HUGE!  The game saw THREE players with 3 TDS.
  • D1: DA Finest have Mat Kirouac and Kishon Thompson leading the way in the receiving corps. While both are amazing players, this is not going to be the key to long term success.  Both have cemented their reputations on the other side of the ball and would be amazing secondary figures on the O
  • D1: STL sits at 0-4. Still not sure how with the roster they have.
  • D2: Love watching the 35+ guys kick a$$. Cory Pecker & Sean Avraam both have their teams at 4-0
  • D2: Simon Dagenais was the divisions top rusher with 37 yards. Seriously?  WTH???  All other QBs should bury their heads.  Love Simon but still.
  • D2: Mat Rene currently leads all D2 QBs in Yards & TDs but has not really played anyone. Their 1 loss was to #NR, who ranks above them.  They finish the season against Bad Boys & Taco Tuesday, the other 2 teams above them.  Those two games will either put them amongst the top or expose their flaws.  Rene will be the pivotal figure to watch.
  • D3: WTF??  POP shut out 40-0!  Craig O’Brien held to 16-38 for NO TDs.  Really?
  • D3: JYD with a statement game. Jason Rossie using the Twin Towers for 5 TDs on the night and the defence chipped in with 2 PICK 6s
  • D3: 69ers rebound from a tough loss with a big 52 points against the Dirty Dawgs. Shea Harbour with 23-31-301-8 TDS on the night.  Dave Chityat did his part for DD as he chipped in with 4 receiving TDs.
  • D3: Robbie Robinson leading D3 as well as 35+ in Yards and TDs as a QB
  • D3: Brotherhood with only 56 PA through 4 games. Life is much easier as a QB with that type of defence
  • D4A: Stephen Harripersaud leads QBs with 829 yards and is 3rd with 21 TDs. Love seeing the 35+ guys do well
  • D4B: Saw the score of the Backwood Boys vs the OK Boomers game and went wow. A 67-19 beatdown by the BBs.  Alessandro Barazzoni finished 11-16-159-5 TDs.  Hardly the stat line for a QB whose team put up 67 points.  Then you look at the defensive stats, and then look again.  5, yes FIVE, PICK 6s in this game.  The Farinaccio boys went off on Paolo Della Rocca as Santino had 2 Pick 6s and Nicky had 2 as well.  Oh, the defence finished with 7 INTs off of Peeze Della Reese.

WEEK 2 REVIEW (due to injury I am still not playing.  Our game was on the middle field, so I got to see quite a bit of all games)

Old Age Outlaws 12 O.A.S. 34

What I wrote: The “something has to give” match as we see two undefeated teams square off to start the week.  This game also features the top defence, OAO, against the top offence in OAS.  Of course, OAS also sports the #2 defence so they will have the edge in this one, IMHO.  Cory Pecker is playing some great football at this point, but Kevin Wyeth has been a 1 man wrecking machine this season, even though he only really runs 2 patterns.  I will not say what they are, but it is not that hard to figure out…LOL.  Stephen Harripersaud is going to have to be his dink & dunk master in order to slow this game down and keep his team in it.  Give me OAS for the win

What happened:  Game time came and went and there was no Cory Pecker.  Normally when your starting QB is absent you panic.  OAS have Kevin Wyeth on their roster, so they are ok with Cory…. LOL.  OAO made him work for his results holding him to 18-29 passing.  The difference in this game was actually the OAS defence who held Stephen Harripersaud to 8-22 on this evening.  Crazy when you consider how high his completion % normally his.  Everything was contested as the OAO receivers simply could not get any separation from the OAS defenders.  Teddy Frenette showed off some offensive skills as he led all players with 2 TD on the night.

 Pacemakers 26 MTL Spitfire 31

What I wrote:  For the second week in a row the Spitfire take on a J. Rossie.  This time it is brother Jason, fresh off a frustrating loss to the above mentioned OAO.  I think that Jason is going to do his best to prove that last week was a fluke and that he can still run the ball.  The Spitfire rush is going to need to be awake.  I also think that if they can keep Brockwell in check from going deep that they will really limit the options available to Rossie.  For the Spitfire, they are coming off their best offensive showing of 2020 and QB Sean Avraam put together his best game of his season.  He will need to repeat that performance if the Spitfire look to even their record at 2-2

What actually happened:  Probably one of the more entertaining games of the season thus far.  Both teams traded scores and misses back & forth.  Jason Rossie used his legs and gained some big yards rushing the ball.  He also scored a controversial TD on a great run that saw multiple defenders move his flags but not remove them.  Let me say that his smile to me as he crossed the goal line was quite large indeed.  Unfortunately, multiple requests to check his flags were ignored/unheard by the refs and when they did look to check them, he had removed them himself.  Needless to say, this was not well received and saw the Spitfire take an OC.  Ultimately the ‘Fire settled down and forced 2 big second half stops that would prove to be the difference in the game.  Sean Avraam finished yup 20-30-203-5 TDs with Dom Benevento on the receiving end of half of those completions.  JP moreau paced the Spitfire D with 7 tackles and Jeff Brown/Ryan Hector each had INTs.

Monster 51 PFP 44

What I wrote:  I look at this game and have so many questions.  Will Andy Peterkin be there?  If so, does he rush Robbie Robinson?  He might be one of the few people in the division who can do so effectively.  Where are JF LeClair and Kevin Wilson for Monster?  Are they on vacation or not playing?  KW is another person who can rush RR effectively.  I think that you may see where I am headed with this.  If Monster cannot get pressure on RR, then they are in for a long night.  RR is in control of his offence right now and he is making defences play big time.  He seems to find his “mismatch” early in the game and ride that receiver all night.  While Monster have some good individual players, you will probably find them in zone more often than not so that might be a help for them.  I think that Domenic Tosi will again need to step up on offence if Monster is going to win this game, otherwise it will go to FPF.

What actually happened:  As we arrived, we saw Kevin Wilson.  Finally, he would suit up for Monster.  Not the case as he actually suited up as an official for the Spitfire/Pacemakers match up.  No Andy Peterkin would mean that once again Craig O’Brien would be the QB.  How would he respond after being smoked 40-0 in D3 earlier in the week?  Quite well actually, as it turns out.  He finished 19-24-280-7 TDs.  Not a bad night.  He leaned heavily on Center, Marco Ottoni, who finished 7-104-2 TDs and Darren Bicknell who turned 4 of his 5 receptions into TDs.  On the other end we had Robbie Robinson continue to play lights out with 282 passing yards on the night.  Brian Martin was the big man on campus with 8-128-3 TDs.  An unfortunate deflection off a receiver that became an INT was a decisive moment in the game.  Entertaining to watch from start to finish.

 Grumpy Old X-Men 21 PAZAZZ 41

What I wrote: I do like the effort and attitude of the GOXM.  They are truly a great bunch of guys and they are smiling and having fun out there.  I do think that they are in for a rough ride in 2020 as they let Jordan Rossie learn at the helm.  While he has had success in some of the lower divisions of FPF you cannot let the age factor fool you for 35+, the guys know what they are doing.  PAZAZZ are coming off their best game where they finally saw Eugene McLaren use his legs and his best player, Rob Allen, more than he had in previous weeks.  I really think this is their best chance at success.  When in doubt Eugene needs to use those two weapons to move the chains, which is what I think that he will do in this game.

What actually happened:  I cannot stress enough the great attitude from the GOXM.  These guys are having fun & playing ball.  While this has not translated into success on the scoreboard, it has not changed how they play.  Another tough game for Jordan Rossie as he finished 10-20-150-3-3 on the night.  Frustrating moment had him troubled with a route and saying so.  Unfortunately, he threw the ball directly to the defender, so the route was irrelevant.  Need to control the controllable first.  Eugene McLaren had a good day at the office as he connected with Marc Farley & Steve Landry for 2 TDs each.  Still waiting for Rob Allen to play a larger role but a win is a win.

JMJ 30 Polvige 37

What I wrote:  Our final match up sees the winless JMJ looking for answers against a strong Polvige squad.  While Ryan Kastner is new to 35+, he is no stranger to FPF and is adapting to his new surroundings quite nicely.  Unfortunately for JMJ they still have questions at the pivot position and Jon Moodie’s absence also affects their defence to boot.  Look for Kastner to exploit that advantage if Moodie is not there to help keep the squad organized.

What actually happened:  The tough season for JMJ continues.  While Cory Johnson had a decent game, it was not enough to stop the losing streak.  He finished 19-32-237-5-1 but that 1 was a PICK 6 to Brad Evans and that was the difference on the scoreboard.   Karim Yasmine & Brian Eudoxie each had 2 TDs.  On the other side we had Ryan Kastner with similar #s as he finished 20-30-216-5-1 on the night.  Addley Dufour and Rick Jennings each with 2 TDs.  That INT to the house was the difference maker…

Carmine’s POTW

  • Dom Benevento (Spitfire) 10-116-3 TDs
  • Craig O’Brien (Monster) 19-24-280-7 TDs & INT on D
  • Marco Ottoni (Monster) 7-104-2 TDs
  • Brian Martin (FPF) 8-128-3 TDs
  • Wade Williams (GOXM) 4-62-1 TD on O, 6 Tackles on D

Carmine’s POTY awards (I have NO SAY but love to stir the pot)

QBOTY

  • Robbie Robinson (FPF) (his to lose)
  • Cory Pecker (O.A.S.) (missed a game…RR says thanks)
  • Ryan Kastner (Polvige) (Needs both above him to miss some games)

ROTY

  • Brian Martin (FPF)
  • Brian Eudoxie (JMJ)
  • Kevin Wyeth (O.A.S.) (Needs to stop playing QB)

DOTY

  • JP Moreau (Spitfire)
  • Robbie Robinson (FPF)
  • Ryan Hector (Spitfire)

2WPOTY

  • Robbie Robinson (FPF)
  • Brian Eudoxie (JMJ)
  • Jason Prince (O.A.S.)

Week 4 preview

GOXM vs. Pacemakers

Ah the battle of the Rossie boys!  Jason vs. Jordan.  Should be loud and contentious.  I think that Jason is playing better ball at the moment and has a few more playmakers.  Chris Brockwell, Robert White, and NIM-J are playing some good ball.  GOXM have heart and spirit but need more consistency if they look to get a W this season.  I do not see it happening this week.

Spitfire vs. Polvige

This should be a good game to watch as Ryan Kastner and Addley Dufour seem to be hitting on a couple of cylinders recently…some deep balls for TDs have proven timely.  As for the Spitfire they have been exposed a few times recently on deep patterns and need to defend that “deep 3rd” if they hope to win this game.  Sean Avraam continues to improve and will need to play well in this game for the ‘Fire to win the game.

FPF vs. Old Age Outlaws

Back to back weeks against high scoring offences for the OAO.  They slowed down OAS, but lost, and will need to do a similar job against RR & Crew.  RR is rolling and will a very difficult person to shut down.  His opposite #, Stephen Harripersaud will need to improve dramatically from last week if the OAO will have any chance

JMJ vs. Monster

JMJ has yet to win a game and Monster just hung 50+ on FPF.  Somehow it would not shock me to see 60 points from Monster in this game.  If Andy Peterkin is back, then we should see a good QB/Rusher battle with Brian Eudoxie.  Monster’s b/u, Craig O’Brien can buy time but tends to not get involved in the run game as much.  Monster for the W

PAZAZZ vs. OAS

OAS only had 6 bodies last week.  Not sure if this was simply bad scheduling (some Chateauguay boys went to the Super Bowl) or if other issues prevailed.  Either way, if they have 6 players at the field, they are a tough out.  PAZAZZ will need to involve Rob Allen to have any chance in this one.  Not sure that it will make a difference, but he can influence games all by himself.

That’s all for today! Thanks for taking the time to read along.
