Carmine’s Coffin Corner – Week 2 recap

35+ Division

Carmine’s Coffin Corner

Week 2 recap & a look ahead

Welcome back for another look at the Old Man Division as well as some other musings and ramblings.

I am truly thrilled to be back at/on the fields, connecting with friends and colleagues for a couple of hours each week.  Allowing the mind to try and tune out what has been, and continues to happen, in the world around us, is definitely a relief.

A couple of quick thoughts from this past Wednesday evening:

  • Shane Williams made one of the nicer catches you will ever see in the back of the endzone.  If you have not seen it then check out the FPF Instagram feed ( https://www.instagram.com/reel/CaqVlEpJGRl/?utm_medium=copy_link )
  • GM Kolethras with a nice little INT
  • Brian Martin has some sweet moves, and soft hands, for a big man.  Already in the running for WROTY
  • The stat sheet is already becoming confusing.  Without any crossover games, players are allowed to play in both divisions.
  • Jason Rossie was quick to let me know I should not have picked against him.  You are welcome for the inspiration!
  • Scoring was down slightly this week vs. the Week 1 results although Broady Windsor is not missing a beat (34 & 35 Points For in their 2 games.  They have given up 47 and 31 Points Against respectively, however.  Bring your pop corn when they take the field…

Random thoughts from around the league:

  • Phil Cutler (KGP) went off for 8 TDs this week on only 198 yards passing.  Defensive stops on downs are not recorded as a turnover but they should be.  Just as big as an INT
  • Tam Vilaydeth had a fun doubleheader this week.  He finished 28-41 with 12 TDs.  Nice little evening’s work.
  • Gryffindor with AJ Gomes at QB?  I had to look at that 3-times before it sank in.  The roster has some serious talent but not sure how well this will work out.  The half-time score also was a mind boggling 10 – 10??  Had to look at the play-by-play.  3 safeties in 1 half?
  • Looks like ANP is back.  If you do not know the initials, then you need to learn.  291 yards passing with 7 TDs.
  • Please write down the name “Anthony Brisebois” if you have not yet heard it.  Up & coming big play receiver.  Between D2 and D3 this past week he had 9-234-6 TDs.  Lights out numbers
  • Incredibles continue their rough start.  The roster has talent, but chemistry is not built in a week.
  • Oompah Loompas are now on Owie’s XMAS Card list.  After a crazy 6 INT start to the season, he went 8 for 9 with 5 TDs in limited time as P.O.P. dropped 69 points on them.
  • Welcome back Scott Payne.  One of the fastest players in FPF, he went 5-84-4 TDs this past week.
  • The Brotherhood welcomed back Quaysie Gordon-Maule and went from 12 points in Week 1 to 54 points in Week 2 behind his 7 passing TDs.  QB play does make a difference!

WEEK IN REVIEW

For those of you not familiar with my way of doing the review, I will include what I wrote the week prior and this way everyone can see if I was out to lunch or not.

Montreal Spitfire Vs. Shenanigans (Spitfire win 28-18)

What I wrote: Not really much to say for this one.  I think it will come down to the ‘Fire defence against the Shenanigans offence.  Not going to go into too many details about how I think this will play out but, as mentioned earlier, I always choose my team to win.

What actually happened: As I mentioned above, I thought the difference would be the Spitfire defence, and it was.  Some timely plays and a BIG INT from Jeff Brown in the end zone, limited the Shenanigans to 3 scores.  On the other side of the ball, the Spitfire were their own worst enemy with an uncharacteristic night catching the ball.  Or not catching the ball.  Whatever.  As written earlier, Shane Williams with as good a TD grab as you will see in any division, over 2 DBs (yes, I was one of them) and then nearly killing himself out of bounds.  There is perhaps 1 yard of turf separating the field from the cement floor at the Baie d’Urfe complexe.  It was a great throw from Jay Ulley and Shane went and got it.

Monster vs. Old Age Outlaws (Monster wins 30-18)

What I wrote: Who will be the QB for Monster is my big question.  Owie is a very capable QB and can put up points.  However, he is not Andy Peterkin (when he is healthy).  Another week of getting comfortable with his receivers will definitely help Mr. Harripersaud but I do not think that it will be enough.  Monster for the W.

What actually  happened : Andy Peterkin, when healthy, is a handful.  17-27 or 203 yards and 5 TDs had hi  looking like his old self.  Or young self.  Healthy self?  Whatever….he looked good.  Owie being Owie chipped in with a TD on offence and 8 Tackles on Defence.  Stephen Harripersaud continues to struggle to find some chemistry with his new team.  Not used to seeing him below a 75% completion rate.  Sitting at 58% thus far is really weird to see.

JMJ vs. Broady Windsor (Broady Windsor wins 35-31)

What I wrote: Yet again, the QB question arises.  Will it be Eugene McLaren from the first half last week, or from the second half?  If it is the former, then I see BW walking away with this one easily.  If it is the latter, I still see them winning but it will be super close.  Either way, Broady Windsor will even their record at 1-1 after this game.

What actually happened: So, I got both predictions correct…sort of.  We got Eugene McLaren from the first half, but JMJ kept it close regardless.  Chris Olson might not look like a mobile QB but do not let first impressions fool you.  He is incredibly mobile with a deadly first step.  He kept Brian Eudoxie guessing and reacting all night.  Brian Martin paved the way for BW with 7 receptions for 77 yards and 2 TDs.  One of them was a very pretty snag of the ball down the left sidelines that drew positive cheers from the Spitfire squad who were quietly enjoying the game.  Leading the way for JMJ was Ron Oquet, who turned back the clock to score 3 TDs on his 6 receptions.  JMJ did score on the last play to make this game look closer than it really was.

Pacemakers vs. FPF (Pacemakers win 31-12)

What I wrote: Man, the QB questions continue.  Is it Owie or is it Jeff?  Will the Pacemakers have 6 players?  Get ready for Jason Rossie to lean on Chris Brockwell once more.  If PFP makes the decision to try and man up against him, he will go off for another big game.  Not sure anyone on FPF can stay with him down the field.  Should be a fun one to watch.  I’ll take FPF in this one.

What actually happened: This was the question that I literally asked Jeff Rosenblatt.  It might have been more of a WTF? but I think that you get the point.  Brockwell did indeed lead the way for his team, get used to my writing that this season, but the story was the lack of production from the FPF offence.  Heads up Jeff, El Presidente might want his sponsorship money back if this continues!  The Pacemakers defence held Rosenblatt to 76 yards (???) on the night.  Not a typo.  It could have been worse.  In addition to the INT from Brockwell, go figure, the Pacemakers had 7 PDs on the night, 4 from Jason Rossie.

Picked the first 3 games correctly but got burned hard on this one.  Puts me at 6-2 on the season thus far, with FPF screwing me for both losses.

Players of the Week (according to me & the stats)

Chris Brockwell (Pacemakers) – 4 Rec / 70 yards / 1 TD on offence and 1 Tackle / 1 INT / 1 PD on defence

Jason Rossie (Pacemakers) 15-23 for 179 yards and 5 TDs on offence and 4 Drops…I mean PDs on Defence

Shane Williams (Shenanigans) – 3 Rec / 38 yards / 1 TD on offence and 4 tackles / 1 INT (stupid throw) on defence

Jimmy Coupethwaite (Spitfire) – 7 Rec / 63 yards / 1 TD on offence

Andy Peterkin (Monster) 17-27 for 203 yards and 5 TDs on offence

Craig “Owie” O’Brien (Monster) – 2 Rec / 1 TD on offence and 8 Tackles on defence

Ron Oquet (JMJ) – 6 Rec / 49 yards / 3 TDs on offence

Eugene McLaren (Broady Windsor) 17-24 for 210 yards and 5 TDs on offence and 3 Tackles on defence

Brian Martin (Broady Windsor) – 7 Rec / 77 yards / 2 TDs on offence

JF Trudeau (Broady Windsor) – 4 Rec / 20 yards / 1 INT / 3 XPTs on offence and 3 Tackles on defence

The Week Ahead

Shenanigans vs. Monster

The first meeting of the season between the two clubs should definitely provide us with some entertainment.  Monster has started off 2-0 but the OAO defence is not quite the Shenanigans defence.  It will be interesting to see if the Shenanigans attempt to play a press style defence as they did in their earlier games against the Spitfire.  I can promise you this, if they rush Tony Khoury again this week it will be a long night for the Shenanigans defence.  Andy will definitely use his legs to buy enough time to find the open receiver.  For the Shenanigans offence I think that they need to figure out their identity.  They definitely tried to be an old-fashioned running team in week 2 by using as much time on the clock as possible to slow the game down, but then threw up a tremendous number of deep shots.  Really did not go hand in hand and did not give them great results.  If Darren Costello is there, and he is able to keep Andy contained, then I am going with the Shenanigans for the narrow upset.  If Darren is absent, then I think Andy will have too much time and Monster wins this one.

Montreal Spitfire vs. Old Age Outlaws

The last time there two teams squared off, in 2020, Stephen Harripersaud went off for 262 yards and 6 TDs.  The Spitfire QB was hobbled with an MCL tear and barely mobile.  From what we have seen thus far in 2022 it does not seem likely that a repeat performance is in the cards.  Having said that, Harripersaud is the master of the dink n dunk offence, but he needs players who will reliably catch the ball for him.  We shall see.  The Spitfire defence has given up the fewest number of points in the Tier thus far, which does not bode well for OAO.  For the Spitfire offence, they are also tops in the Tier, albeit after all of two games.  As usual, give me the Spitfire for the victory.

FPF vs JMJ

JMJ, with Chris Olson, have 2 close losses.  FPF, with 2 different QBs thus far, have had Jekyll and Hyde games.  One really good and one ugly “monster.”  Not to be confused with Monster, from Tier 1.  I was quite surprised / disappointed / stunned to see the stat line put up by Rosenblatt from the last game.  He is usually a very consistent QB, who does hold onto the ball until the literal last second on way too many occasions.  It works for him, somewhat like it did for Ben Roethlisberger.  If FPF is going to take this one it will because Vince Mancini made the difference.  For JMJ I really think that Chris Rosen needs to get more involved.  7 catches in 2 games from, IMO, your big play guy is not enough.  GM is going to have to get his hands up high if he wants any hope of disrupting Jeff’s vision next week.  Jeff, don’t let me down but I am going for FPF again this week.  They cannot screw me forever.

Pacemakers vs. Broady Windsor

Mobile QB Eugene McLaren meet Mobile QB Jason Rossie.  Oh, by the way, Mobile QB who plays great D Eugene McLaren meet Mobile QB, who plays great D, Jason Rossie.  Going to be a bit of a chess match here as we have similar style QBs who also both have a BIG PLAY receiver in Brian Martin and Chris Brockwell.  Whoever gets stuck rushing for either team…sucks to be you.  Jason does use his legs a bit more often than Eugene does, in order to gain yardage, but both will move around to buy time.  If Brian Eudoxie is there, anywhere near game time LOL, then I have to give this one to Broady Windsor.  I can already hear Jason now….What?  2 weeks in a row?  LMFAO!!!!

That’s all for today! Thanks for taking the time to read along.
