Bombsquad’s Breakdown (Div A) – Week 4

Bombsquad’s Breakdown Week 4

Torrential downpours, touch tournament weekend, Grand Prix and another great week in FlagPlus. What a week. Let’s get straight to the recap and see if we can delve into other areas of our great league.

Countdown to Detonation

3. The One Night Stands get beaten by the Mercenaries 53-40 yet still score 40 points after giving up 5 interceptions!!! Craig O’Brien still managed 260 yards passing and 6 touchdowns. Take away the INT and this QB matchup results in almost mirrored stats as Pollice throws for 301 yards and 7 TD’s. Pollice truly spread the ball around as six receivers had at least one reception and four caught touchdowns. The story here is another big defensive game from the Mercs. Adi Sharma showed why he is one of the premiere defensive strategists in FlagPlus, as his defence was all over O.N.S.. Godfrey Abu had 2 picks as did Pollice. But O.N.S. definitely have something to build on because when they weren’t throwing picks, they were scoring touchdowns. Hainsley Adams was on fire scoring 3 TD’s and almost reaching 100 yards receiving. Once this team starts reducing the turnovers, they will make another run.

2.The Rainmakers edge the Kingz 32-31. Ryan Kastner is truly making strides to become one of the Hall of Fame big names in FlagPlus if he isn’t there already. Michael Chitayat was blazing with 11 catches for 123 yards and 2 TD’s. Kastner has built chemistry with his team and brought in new additions which give this team a chance at dominance. Not to take anything away from a very determined Kingz team that just fell short. Turnovers are turnovers. Francois Lebeau is very efficient at not throwing interceptions but a turnover on downs is still a turnover. Once the Kingz can be more consistent on fourth down, they will be a very scary team.  When you look at the Kingz line-up you see many names that you either do not know or barely know. Yet they lost by one point to a team who is stacked with players that almost everyone knows. Great job on both sides.

3. After being down 18-0 at the start of the game, DA Finest go down to the Triple Sixers 31-6. This was a forgettable game for both sides of the ball. Karim Chaoual threw for 104 yards and 2 TD’s. DA Finest had a QB tandem of Nathan Taylor and Kishon Thompson. Taylor threw the only score of the game for DA Finest to Akked Moore. All this due to the fact that DA Finest were without Kevin Wyeth and Karim Binette due to the Rosemount touch football finals which they at least won to compensate for the bitter taste this loss leaves in DA Finest’s collective mouths. The Sixers were without Pat Jerome but on this day they did enough to win the game. Let’s just leave this mediocre game where it is- in the past.

This week’s Golden Boy would be Michael Chitayat of the Rainmakers with his 11 receptions, 123 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dominating performance and great work.

The Showstoppa’ this week is the Adi Sharma-led Mercenaries defence who were all over O.N.S. And Godfrey Abu who had 2 picks and one for a score.

I want to take a moment this week to talk about some of the little mentioned players in this league. There is one position that gets very little recognition but it one of the most important spots on the field. The Rusher.

The Kingz’ Charles Baillargeon won Division 2 Two-Way Player of the Year last winter and for good reason. QB’s have to think about him. He doesn’t miss the flag and is a very good rusher. He is one of the most important pieces to that Kingz puzzle. He is leading this Div A this spring with 8 sacks.

The Mercenaries have bottled lightening in the form of rusher Brandon Pierre. This kid seems to never run out of steam or even get winded for that matter. He may be short of stature but is long in heart. I do not believe there is a quicker rusher in FlagPlus. He sits in second with 6 sacks.

Tam Vilaydeth is a very mobile QB for Terror Squad but doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as the part-time rusher for the Triple Sixers. A quiet yet determined rusher, Tam is everywhere and is right behind Brandon Pierre in the speed category. He seems to always come up big when his team needs him. He currently has 5 sacks this season.

The captain of DA Finest and our esteemed WEPL host, Moe Khan is what QB’s hate to see. A tall guy who can rush. Once those arms go out, Big Bird is very hard to see around. Moe has 3 sacks this season but more importantly he has 4 passes defended from the rusher spot. He is the only player in division A with PD’s from the rusher position.

If you notice, the teams these players rush for are all top teams in the league. I am not taking anything away from the rushing duo of Tanner Burrell or Hainsley Adams for O.N.S. They are two players that can play anywhere. I am saying that winning and good rushers go hand in hand. You need one to have the other. Something you might want to consider when building a winter team.

So now we come to our picks of the week.

The One Night Stands take on DA finest this Thursday in Brossard. Kevin Wyeth was very close to leaving his final matchup to attend his FlagPlus game, so I’m sure he will be fired up and ready to go this week. Craig O’Brien will be looking to reverse the turnover trend this week and get a W for O.N.S. supposedly, if Jeff Millar picks Kevin Wyeth, Wyeth must walk off the field in shame. Something to watch for.

The Triple Sixers have their hands full this week as they take on the Rainmakers. Chaoual should have Jerome back, but even with all his weapons in place, I have to say I believe that the Rainmakers are just playing on another level right now. I’m going to have to go with the Rainmakers to win this one.

The Mercenaries take on Pollice’s winter team in the Kingz. This should be a great match. Pollice knows the Kingz defensive scheme and the Kingz know Pollice’s offensive schemes. Old fashion barn burner! The Kingz are a true team and the Mercs are a truly talented team. In the end I believe the Mercs D will stymie the Kingz O just enough to get the win.

That’s all we have,

Week 4 is done,

All the teams that lost,

And the ones that Won.

The halfway point,

Is now at hand,

Fight for the playoffs,

And strike up the BAND!!

As per the usual weekly rant, I can be reached at [email protected] with traffic updates and bridge closures. But until then another week has been defused.
