Bombsquad’s Breakdown (Div 1/2) – Week 9

Well what a week! In D1 we are going to have a matchup that will decide who finishes in 1st place. We would have had the same thing in D2, but there was a huge upset this past weekend. Not just because the underdog won, but it is how they won. Let’s get to it!!

Countdown to detonation

D1

3. Montreal’s Finest takes out the Redhawks 43-30. Caser Sanchez was the QB for the Redhawks and he controlled the ball well. Once again receiver Jean-Christophe Viens had a big game with 113 yards receiving and a touchdown while Felix Senecal had a 2 TD performance. But the Finest offense was too much to handle with Kevin Wyeth tossing another 6 touchdowns. Nathan Taylor was a beast with 3 catches for 66 yards and 2 TD’s. This offense is very difficult to stop.

2. Old Skool educate the Rainmakers 43-32. Andy Peterkin was back behind centre and didn’t miss a beat going 21-25 for 234 yards and 7 TD”s. Louie Larouche was the big receiver for Peterkin as he caught 7 balls for 87 yards and 2 TD’s. Ryan Kastner had 5 TD’s himself but another big 2 INT’s which were pivotal. Michael Chitayat has moved into the lead for two-way player of the year with 6 receptions for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as 2 passes defended on the other side of the ball.

1. The Expos take down their rival Demons 49-39. Chad Byers had a huge 8 TD performance, three of them to big man Ricky Martin who had 74 yards on 4 grabs. Pollice didn’t turn the ball over, except on downs, as there were some big stops by the Expos defence. Their one struggle was limiting Jacques Void, who had 11 grabs for 127 yards and 3 TD’s. So now the Expos have put themselves in a position to play for 1st overall spot in the division.

D2

7. The Triple Sixers do the Blazers a favour and defeat the Gladiateurs 47-46 in another shootout. Sixer QB Karim Chaoual had a monster game going 20-26 for 302 yards and 7 TD’s while Francois Lebeau also had big numbers with 259 yards and 7 TD’s. Converts, people, converts! Pat Jerome was ridiculous with 7 catches for 180 yards and 3 TD’s. Matthew Bishara was huge as well for the Gladiateurs with 10 grabs for 81 yards and 5 TD’s!! Some great performances in this game and the results make for a great and exciting finish.

6. The Blazers are still alive after beating the Tomahawks 33-32. Both QB’s had 5 TD’s so what did the game come down to….you guessed it: converts. Sean Kennedy stood out for the Blazers, catching 6 for 110 yards and a TD while Kenton Lowe scored two himself. Everybody got in on the action for the Tomahawks with Paul-Andre Lebouthillier leading everyone in yards. The Blazers are alive for another week and still have a chance to squeeze in.

5. The Wolfpack take down MOMO Nation in a fairly close game 35-26. This time Pascal Murray chose Jean-Daniel Chevalier as his main target tossing him 5 for 100 yards and 2 TD’s. Michel Carrier also had 2 TD’s. MOMO put up a fight though. Yannick Vanasse found favorite target Jean-Nichol Derenoncourt 3 times for 54 yards and 2 of his 3 TD passes. Vanasse also ran for one. But the mighty Wolfpack stayed on the winning track.

4. Victorious Secret grounded the Air Squad shutting down their offense 34-6. Paul Lapierre supplied the only TD for the Squad hitting defender Alex Hovington for the score. But besides that, the Air Squad was held to 19 yards passing and 22 yards total! Even with QB Lapierre feeding the hungry defenders twice. The hairy one once again had a multiple TD performance, Rochdi Benabdelkader has only been held to one TD in two games this year. Snapper Mario Choueri was the workhorse with 7 grabs for 67 yards and a score. This team needs to tighten up for the playoffs, however.

3. In the shocker of the week, the One Night Stands pound the G-Men like a 2$ hooker, 54-27, as they double the G-Men score. The G-men did not seem like themselves, but you cannot take anything away from an O.N.S. crew that held the G-Men and picked them off twice. Jeff Millar had a beautiful one handed pick that even QB Settino had to shake his head and say great play at. I was told not to mention a certain player so I won’t say that monster Andrew Blevings had 6 catches for 135 yards and 3 TD’s. Instead, I will point out that trusty receivers Tony Lalla and Ryan Brewster, who both had 2 scores a piece. For the depleted G-Men, the only bright spot was Nareg Yessayan’s 2 TD performance on 85 yards and 7 catches.

2. Once again, a game with no winner as the Wolverines tie the Mercenaries and drop them into 2nd place. Gino Di Fazio had a very rough game, completing only 11 passes for 3 TD’s and 3 INT’s. Tony Tabet also had 3 TD’s but only 1 INT. Adam Bailey was Di Fazio’s favorite weapon and Jacques Void was Tabet’s. I could talk about this game all night, but it was best summed up by Raffi Kozanian of the Wolverines who wrote on the Flagplus Facebook wall, “For some reason a tie feels worse than a loss.”

1. And the Trojans topped the Top Guns 47-18. Carmine Pollice threw 6 TD’s and even caught one from centre and family member Jimmy Coupethwaite. Jimmy also had 8 catches for 101 yards and 2 TD’s while Vinny Gualano had 3 TD’s on 8 grabs and 73 yards. On the other side it was a family affair as QB Mario Porreca threw all his TD’s to the Meshesha brothers Yadel (1) and Yafet (2). Yadel had 100 yards receiving while Yafet had 83.

B…..B….BOOM. Like that guy in Alien 3 right before the dude drops the flare and fire…lots of fire.

D1

My SHOWSTOPPA this week is I guess is the Old Skool defense who was the only team to have two interceptions. Great job boys.

My Golden Boy this week has to be Jacques Void who had 11 receptions for 127 yards and 3 TD’s against a very strong Expos defense.

D2

My SHOWSTOPPA this week is both Jeff Brown and Dan Hilton who both had 3 sacks for their squads. One if not both also had a safety. The rushers always go under appreciated so great work guys!!

The Golden Boy this week is the tandem of Karim Chaoual and Pat Jerome. Chaoual tossed 7 TD’s on 302 yards passing. Jerome had 7 grabs for 180 yards and 3 TD’s. Good game gents.

Now for the D1 playoff picture, for not everything is as it seems. For example, the Demons currently sit in 4th place due to the head to head tiebreak with Old Skool. (the website does not take head-to-head into account, which is why the standings are always unofficial). As of now, the Demons would be playing against the Rainmakers in the first week of the playoffs. Old Skool faces the Redhawks this week and as long as they win, they will remain in 3rd. Should they lose and the Demons win, then they would drop to 4th. The bottom is interesting. The Rainmakers are in with a win or with a Redhawks loss. The Redhawks need to win, have the Rainmakers lose, and make up 72 points all in one week. Not impossible, but highly doubtful. 1st place will be decided the old-fashioned way: on the field, as the Expos and Montreal`s Finest square off. Winner gets 1st and loser gets 2nd. Both teams know that there is no difference between finishing first or second besides the matchup, so I wonder how both teams approach this game.

In D2 Conference A, Victorious Secret sits in 1st. The Mercenaries are in second after a tie. The Mercs can only take over 1st with a VS loss or tie and a win of their own, but these teams are 1 and 2 no matter what. The Wolverines hold 3rd place with the Sixers right on their heels. Thanks to the tie last week, the Wolverines maintain a 1 point advantage. Regardless, these two teams will be 3rd and 4th. Air Squad can clinch a playoff birth with a win or tie, as well as a Blazers loss or tie. If the Air Squad lose, and the Blazers win, the Blazers would hold the tiebreak due to a better divisional record. The Gladiateurs are in with a win. If they lose or tie, and the Blazers win, the Blazers would leapfrog them. Confused? Good. So am I.

In Conference, B the story is a little different. Thanks to the O.N.S. upset, the Trojans clinched 1st. The G-Men and Wolfpack will be 2nd and 3rd. They are currently tied, but the G=Men defeated the Wolfpack this season, so they hold the tiebreak. That said, the G-Men finish against the Trojans, while the Wolfpack finish up against O.N.S. The One Nighters are locked into 4th place. The Top Guns are also in the playoffs.  Now the only hope MOMO Nation has for making the playoffs is to defeat the Air Squad and have the Top Guns defeat the Tomahawks. Now get this:  Should MOMO win and the Tomahawks tie, then it would come down to point differential between MOMO and the Tomahawks as both teams would have the same record, the same division record and they tied each other during the season. The Tomahawks currently have a one point +/- advantage over MOMO, a Tomahawks tie would leave their +/- unchanged. If MOMO were to win by one point this weekend, madness would ensue. Get your shiniest quarter ready, because a coin flip would be needed! No joke.

Okay, Predictions it is!!

In D1, I see the Demons defeating the Rainmakers. They have a very opportunistic defense and Ryan Kastner has had trouble closing out games this season. There isn`t really much more to say.

I think Old Skool will put the Redhawks out of the playoffs with a win. I think the Redhawks are a talented team but just need more experience indoor under their belts to beat Peterkin and the boys.

I will not pick who will win the 1st place showdown, but I can tell you that the last time these teams met it was a virtual hail mary to win the games with two plays left. This will be a great game.

D2

The Wolverines take on the Blazers who are fighting for their playoff lives. The Blazers have been playing much better as of late. The Wolverines are upset about that tie. But I think the Blazers will upset the Wolverines this week and shock the league! Check the Facebook wall after the article goes up…just saying.

The Wolfpack take on the surging One Night Stands. The Pack have had a great season. The will make noise in the playoffs. O.N.S. is catching fire at the right time and look to carry momentum into the playoffs. And I think they will, as I am calling another upset right here. O.N.S. wins.

Victorious Secret battle the Gladiateurs who are trying to avoid falling out of the playoffs. This team has a great offense but their defense is lacking. Something that Victorious Secret is very good at with the 2nd top defense in the league. But V.S. can score as well. So you hear it here first! The Blazers make the playoffs as they win and Victorious Secret takes out the Gladiateurs.

So there’s the recap,

And of course my picks.

I know for sure,

Some think I`m full of ____.

But we`ll know next week,

When all is said and done.

The scores have been marked,

And we know who has won.

That’s it for me here. Best of luck to all of you out there in the final week. You can email predictions or your own poems at [email protected] but until then, another week has been defused.
