Another Week, same story: Power Rangers and Yin&Yang still on top in Co-ed

Another week of co-ed action is on the books and for the most, things have remained the same. Power Rangers are still atop division 1 with a perfect record while Yin & Yang are undefeated atop division 2. Sadly for the Tigers, their fortunes did not improve. They struggled in week 1 against division 2 opponents and their crossover game to division 1 did not end much better. On a brighter note, I went 4/6 in my week 1 predictions. With that, let’s stop with this chit-chat and cut to what you are all here to read about.

Bargains of the Week:

Maximilien Sadori (Hot-Dawgz): While Matthew Peacock won this award last week with 7 catches for 89 yards that performance was bested by Maximilien Sadori who made 7 catches for 100 yards and a score. Singlehandedly, Sadordi accounted for over half his teams’ receiving yards. When you consider his offensive cap hit is a paltry 59.8, Maximilien Sadori has to be the bargain of the week.

Urline Constant (A-Town): It was a defensive performance that caught my eye for this next bargain of the week award. Urline Constant came up big in her team’s win with a staggering four defended passes and five tackles. Since this is only Constant’s first season in the league her cap hit is 60 on both sides of the ball. However, if she keeps performing like last week, we can expect that cap hit to rise considerably at the end of the season.  Sadly, her strong showing was not quite enough to lead her team to victory as they eventually fell 26-18 to the Hot-Dawgz.

Justin Weir (Y & Y): When Y & Y showed up to their week two matchup without their usual QB, I was slightly worried. Luckily, Justin Weir stepped up in a massive way for his team. Despite only 8 passing attempts, Weir completed 6 passes for nearly 100 yards. Even more impressive was the fact that half of his completions were for touchdowns. To add to those already impressive totals are Weir’s 40 rushing yards. What makes Weir a bargain of the week is the fact that he has QB cap of only 62.8.

Cap Wastes of the Week:

Benjamin Léger (Party Mix): Inarguably, Power Rangers and Party Mix are the two best teams in division 1. Most observers expect these two to once again meet in the playoffs. This week, Party Mix were trounced by their biggest rivals. In big games, you need your biggest players to step up. Unfortunately, for Party Mix, Benjamin Léger went missing. He managed only 26 receiving yards and one defended pass. After Serge Pilon’s nomination for Cap Waste of the Week last week he stepped up big this week for Power Rangers. Let’s hope Léger steps up big next week because with a cap hit of about 84 on each side of the ball, Party Mix need Léger to be at the top of his game.

Raphaël Ducas-Lapalme (Savage): In their hefty loss to 3rd Down for What, Savage struggled to move the ball with any consistency. A large part of that blame has to fall on the shoulders of their quarterback, Raphaël Ducas-Lapalme. I have two major criticisms for Lapalme. First, he failed to score a single touchdown in the second half. In other words, once 3DW’s defence adjusted to what Lapalme was running on offence, he had no solution. Furthermore, he threw more picks then touchdowns. At a rating of nearly 80, we all know he is capable of much more. If he is able to live up to that potential, then Savages will have a fighting chance.

Game of the Week: Week 2

A-Town (18) vs Hot-Dawgz (26):

Hot-Dawgz: Hot-Dawgz’s impressive victory was led by a strong showing by their quarterback. Vincent Boudin attempted 34 passes and completed a very impressive 19. He averaged exactly 10 yards a completion. He did not attempt to force the ball deep too often and the result was a well balanced attack that could drive the field. The most important statistic from Boudin’s outing was the 0 interceptions. By protecting the ball, he kept A-Town’s offence off the field and by doing so, secured the victory for his team. As I already mentioned, Maximilien Sadori had a fantastic game and he accounted for nearly half of his team’s total yardage. However, you cannot talk about the Dawgz’s receivers without mentioning David Gutkovski. Gutkovski led his team in receiving touchdowns with two to go along with his five catches for 62 yards. Rounding out their receiving corps was the talented Sophie Sauvé who caught three catches for a respectable 16 yards. Hot-Dawgz attempted 34 passes. That number of attempts was so high because their defence was able to manage two picks and with every pick, they put the ball back in the hands of their offence. One of those picks came courtesy of Gutkovski while the other came from Edgar Lanoue. To go along with his interception, Lanoue was tied for a team high two tackles as well as a defended pass.

A-Town: While A-Town passed for nearly as many yards as their opponents, they made a critical mistake. Emmanuelle Bonsard only attempted 16 passes, out of which he completed half. Bonsard averaged nearly 20 yards per completion which means he attempted far too many deep passes. The result of attempting too many deep balls is a high number of interceptions. Inevitably, Bonsard wound up throwing two picks that cost his team dearly. While that deep ball mentality may not have benefited the team, it definitely padded the stats of Alexandrine Trottier. She only caught one pass but she made the most of it since that reception was for a 40 yard touchdown. Leading the charge for A-Town’s receivers was Mathia Normandin with a team high 68 receiving yards and three receptions. In terms of A-Town’s defence it was not what they did do that mattered but rather what they did not do. While the opposition managed two picks, A-Town’s defence had to settle with six defended passes. Had they managed to transform one or two of those defended passes into interceptions, this game could have had a very different outcome.

Misinformed Predictions:

Black Mamba vs Tigers: To be perfectly honest with you, I don’t think Black Mamba’s style of play is sustainable. FPF is not a place for the run/pass option (RPO) and while it may take teams a week or two to key into the way this team plays, their system will eventually fail. However, I don’t think this is the week that the flaws in their system will be exposed. Tigers simply don’t have the athletes to matchup with Mamba. I see Black Mamba coming away with the victory.

Hot-Dawgz vs Yin & Yang: While Hot-Dawgz may have explosive receivers and a talented core, questions will be asked of them until they manage to knock off a heavyweight team like Y&Y. Yin & Yang have explosive elements of their own as well as the experience to adapt to whatever the opposition may throw at them. For yet another week I’m calling my own number and predicting my team to win.

It’s a Match vs Savage: This could be a very interesting game. Savage, the bottom dwellers from division 1 are facing off with the second ranked team from division two, It’s a Match. In this game, I see It’s a Match’s potent offence taking advantage of Savage’s defence. It’s a Match will win in a closely fought game.

ATH Squad vs Power Rangers: This won’t be a very long review. If Party Mix can’t beat Power Rangers, then no one can. Power Rangers will win and they will win big.

Michael Scott’s Tots vs Tigers: Another short prediction coming up here, the experience of Michael Scott’s Tots will beat out whatever scheme the Tigers dream up this week. Even if the Tigers continue to play trips right every single play, it’s nothing Michael Scott’s Tots hasn’t seen before and they will find a way to stop it and win big.

Party Mix vs 3rd Down for What: Well, while 3rd Down for What have had a magical 2-0 start to the season, that undefeated run is going to end this week. While 3DW have an experienced roster, they simply aren’t equipped to handle a high-octane offence like Party Mix’s. This game may start off close but the talent of Party Mix will eventually distance the two teams.

There you have it, yet another week of co-ed action is on the books and week 3 is already on the verge of kicking off. I am playing at Brossard at 9 this week so if you want to say hi, talk about the article or discuss the league come see me on the sidelines.

See you all on the field!
