A Surprising Result in CE2, Team Prime in CE1 and a Brutal Vortex Incoming

Welcome back to another edition of the CE1, CE2 and Women’s article, as we ended Week 3 and are starting Week 4 in FPF’s Fall Cup.

I’m not much of an introduction person, I know the people want to get right down to the action, and I usually don’t have too much to report in terms of FPF news, though there are a few things.

First, as was mentioned on FPF’s podcast show, Calling The Audible, there is a petition to ensure the St Leonard Hebert Dome remains in operation this Winter season. The city of St Leo has mentioned they will not be installing it this Winter, and hopefully by signing this, something can be done so that FPF can use this facility, as it has, for many seasons in the Winter season. Please take 10 seconds to sign it so that we can hopefully keep the Hebert Dome alive!

Second, with Sunday Sept 24th being the first day of Week 4, scorekeepers will be enforcing the uniform rule. In order to get a Game Played and your stats, you must wear the same colored jersey as the rest of your team and the jersey must have a number (which is neither taped nor markered on).

Alright, enough administrative things, let’s get back to the Flag Football week that was

What’s Good in the Women’s Division

*Note: Written on Sunday Sept 24th

  • Despite a 41-18 scoreline, the BRUTES vs. Wolfpack game was actually much closer than the score suggests. The halftime score was 13-12 for the BRUTES, with both defenses coming up with 1 stop. The BRUTES forced a 4 and out while Maryse Paquette got the INT on Maude Lacasse. In the 2nd half, with the score 27-18 for BRUTES and Wolfpack starting a new drive, Sabrina Gervais iced this game with an INT and 2 plays later sealed the W with the 6 yard TD dagger.
  • BRUTES started the week with a 47-19 shalacking of X&X to go 2-0 during Week 3.
  • The 2 remaining undefeated teams are both 3-0; BRUTES and Vortex.
  • 3 teams remain winless: X&X, Wildcats, Red Bulls.
  • Red Nation suffered their first loss of the season and it wasn’t close. Vortex showed them it’s their division to lose as defending champions from last Fall Cup.
  • Wolfpack showed a lot of grit against BRUTES, and carried that over in their 20-0 shutout victory over Wildcats. Maryse Paquette had herself A DAY with 10 grabs for 118 yards and 2 TDs along with 3 INTs, 2 tackles and 2 PDs. Talk about a dual threat player!
  • It was not Catherine Bolduc‘s night for Wildcats on Thursday night against Wolfpack. She completed 10 passes for 75 yards, 0 Touchdowns and 4 INTs. Sometimes you have one of those nights where nothing seems to work.
  • Wildcats will be looking to rebound, as they face Red Nation in Week 4, a rematch of last Spring’s Semi-Finals.
  • Maude Lacasse is having herself a season so far, completing 80% of her passes, throwing 20 TDs and just 1 Interception and leads the Women’s division with 735 passing yards in just 3 games! Great stuff Maude!
  • Maryse Paquette getting a lot of love in the bulletin notes for this week. She’s eyeing the elusive and prestigious Triple Crown title of a receiver: Leading the league in Receptions (42), Yards (408) and Touchdowns (5). She has 21 more receptions than the 2nd receiver, 160 more yards than the next receiver for yards, but the TDs is tight, as she is tied for 1st with Virginie Roussel and Sabrina Gervais of BRUTES.
  • Speaking of Sabrina Gervais, she has already has 4 INTs, 2 of which she has returned to the house for 6 points. Her and Paquette will be dueling for 2-way player of the year all season long!
  • The Converts page is literally stacked with Vortex and BRUTES players. In fact, they are representing 82% of the convert stats (no joke):
  • One team (hopefully) will get their first victory of the season when Red Bulls play X&X, 5pm on Sunday at Laval.

Iggy’s News and Notes in CE2

*Note: Written on Sunday Sept 24th

  • I caught the first glimpse of Balls Deep last Sunday and they are an athletic bunch with some, but a limited sense of the flag football game. They male players clearly have a football background, but the playbook isn’t purely adapted to the flag game, at least not yet. While Emma Langlois has been utilized and targeted very nicely, the other female receivers will need to be slightly more involved if the offense wants to be truly dynamic and be amongst the best in the division.
  • The At Least We Tried defense is the best so far in the early goings of the season, allowing only 30 points in 3 games.
  • Y&Y opened their season with a relatively easy victory over WYD Step Bro’s.
  • With a 14-6 lead, Who’s Gonna Carry the Boats let their lead slip away. It started with a Nathan Nettel 23-yard TD (14-12 for WGCB) and then Alex Szalipszki threw and pick 6 to Lucas Gimeno on the very next play. Szalipszki did drive the field, ending with a 13-yard score to Cam Chaput to grab another lead (20-18), but with 6 plays remaining, Pranav Sharma drove the field with ice in his veins and scored on the 2nd-to-last play. He found Gimeno for his only reception on the night, but it was a huge one, as he caught the game-winning TD and picked off the Hail Mary attempt from Szalipszki.
  • There was a mixup with the Laval contract on Tuesday night and the Kiss My CB – TIGRES game was postponed to a future date.
  • Subzero could not hold onto a 26-12 halftime lead and made a poor game management decision late in the game. Up by 5 points with 2 plays remaining and on their own 10-yard line, instead of punting and leaving the Free Agents with 1 play for a Hail Mary 40-bomb, they decided to go for it and Parker couldn’t connect with Laurence Pontbriand on the sideline comeback. To me, the odds of winning the game via first down were about 60-70% whereas the odds if you punt and giving up a Hail Mary is in the 90-95% chance of winning. I usually dislike punting, but that is definitely one scenario in which the punt is useful and should have been applied. Free Agents, as a big underdog in the game, come away with an outstanding comeback victory, as Gabriel Lemonde found a wide open Rachel Shea near the middle of the endzone for the TD on the final play of the game.
  • We’ve got 3 teams that remain undefeated: Balls Deep, KMCB and Y&Y
  • And 4 teams that remain winless: WGCTB, Subzero, Ballhard University and Free Agents No More
  • Predators, WYD Step Bro’s, Ballhard University, TIGRES, Subzero, Free Agents, WGCTB, Y&Y all play 2 games this week. Better rest up and be ready for a key Week 4 for the standings and the race for the double-elimination spots!
  • Lucas Gimeno is making a name for himself with the Step Bro’s, as he leads all defenders with 5 INTs (one for a pick 6).
  • Nestor Fayad is lucky he is picking up yards on the ground, leading all runners with 236 rushing yards and 5 Rushing TD’s, because averaging 59 passing yards and 2 Passing TDs a game are NOT good QB stats.
  • Florence Langlois is leading all female players with 4 points off converts. (2x XP1, 1x XP2).

Iggy’s Thoughts on Co-Ed 1 after 3 Weeks + 1 Day of Week 4

  • The IG Team is making a strong case to be the team to beat in Co-Ed 1 so far. While they are technically 2-1, they have beaten all 3 teams they played on the field. Their 1 loss was a forfeit due to busting the cap, otherwise they have steam-rolled their competition so far. Want to know how I know Jeanslee Alexis is the ultimate game changer? How about being down 24-0 to Plenty of Fish Sunday morning in the first 8 minutes of the game without Jeanslee there. Once Jeanslee showed up, the tides changed dramatically. The defense recorded 4 interceptions (one of which was returned for 6 by Jeanslee) and the offense went to work, as Jeanslee threw for 4 TD’s, got two XP1 converts, and added another TD by juking it past the POF defense with his lightning speed for 18 yards.
  • Fitsquad are struggling right now, with back-to-back blowout losses to Plenty of Fish and Kiss My End Zone. Luckily for them, they have another game as soon as tonight (Monday, Sept 25th) so they need to mentally move on and prepare for their next game. The problem? It’s against the aforementioned 2-0 EZFun team.
  • Finally playing their 2nd game of the season tonight is Vultures, as they try to get into the win column when they play Deep Ballz at 10pm at Marie-Vic.
  • EZFun stands alone as the only undefeated team so far at 2-0. Splitting wins for them is Jeremy White and Nicolas Blais, showing they can win with either QB under centre.
  • Interesting note… All 7 teams play 2 games this week. The standings could look very different by the end of the week! All the games are sure to be entertaining, but I’m eyeing at 2 in particular for the rest of the week: Vultures vs KMEZ and EZFun vs. The IG Team
  • I have a feeling that Deep Ballz are going to struggle this year. They will need to take the season reps to get familiar, run 2-3 concepts to nail them down and use the end of the regular season to improve what they didn’t do well to be as strong a playoff team as they can be.
