A Quick Week 3 Article Turnaround and Questionable Decisions

Aight, I’m back to recap what went down in Week 3 of FPF and make the rounds in each Tier. There were some questionable decisions I noticed from the sidelines that left me and some refs scratching our heads on multiple occasions, so keep reading to see what those were.

Tierful Talking Points

  • Tier 1
  • Blessed had a huge outing last Sunday night against STL. They proved they are here to make a statement in Tier 1 and will not be a pushover. They struggled in Div 2 in the Winter, but now getting accustomed to the speed of the higher divisions, they have looked good so far and, along with Kangaroos, are the only teams with 0 losses on the season.
  • Not even a 2 year pandemic could stop the feud between Nic Centomo and Theo Ojeaha, as that rivalry was renewed.
  • Quaysie Gordon-Maule is killing it after 4 games, with 330 receiving yards (1st) and 6 TD’s (T-2nd).
  • Kangaroos have scored 106 points so far this season… in 2 games played 👀.
  • STL dropped both of their games in Week 3, the latter which was seen on GOTW filmed by Chris Rivest.
  • Serge Pilon Jr. had 16 tackles against EZW last Sunday 👀. That must have been a lot of “all hooks” run by Jeremy White.
  • While it was Pilon racking up the tackles, it was Will Trottier grabbing 4 TDs for 84 yards, but he didn’t lead in receiving yards. That went to Lauriane Beauchamp with 5 receptions for 94 yards and 2 TD’s of her own.
  • That KGP and #NR game was an offensive showdown that saw 58 points scored in the 1st half alone!! I hope you took the over in this game. There were 41 completions and just 11 incompletions in this game. The precision was ON.
  • Kenny Baye had 138 yards receiving on 8 receptions that went for 3 TDs which was good enough to make the FPF Team of the Week.
  • Will Power had 2 interceptions off of Dylan Taylor‘s deep ball that handed the ball back to Stephen Harripersaud, who was slicing and dicing the STL defense.

  • Tier 2
  • Mangoose lookin great so far this season as Nic Schaefer is one of 2 QB’s to not throw an interception with 3 games or more played in Tier 2.
  • The Centaures-Team Ethnik game was full of mental mistakes. Read it in my game recap below to find out what they were.
  • Luis Begin joined the KMO defensive interception party with 2 of his own on Monday night against Jason Rossie.
  • Propelled by his 4 TD’s on Wednesday night, James Drysdale leads Tier 2 with 7 TD’s.
  • DonnDre Borden did his best for HSS, grabbing 5 balls for 82 yards and 2 TDs.
  • Centaures went 1-1 in Week 3 to remain at .500.
  • Blackouts beat up on a team that should be in Tier 3. Nothing really to report here.
  • 2 of the top 3 receivers in yards belong to the Centaures players: Yvan Desjardins and Jeremy Rooney.
  • Stephen Harripersaud has a 141.7 QBR so far in Tier 2… that’s insane! Then you have Adam Sinagra and Rocco Christiano with 136.3 and 135.8 QBR’s. Tier 2 quarterbacking is legit.
  • Tier 3:
  • You’ve got 5 teams that remain undefeated: Bruins, Arouch, Kiss My Inlaws, Lallimo’s 17 Year Olds and Voodo
  • And 5 teams that still don’t have a win: Blue Dreamers, Trapstars, Threat Level Midnight, Lockdown and Why So Serious?
  • Jules Regimbald is your passing TD leader with 18 in 3 games and is posting a nasty 137.9 QBR.
  • Arouch pitched 2 shutouts this week. 32-0 over Blue Dreamers and 45-0 over Why So Serious? Damn!
  • I thought that Sulé Fess’s victory over Trapstars by a score of 32-12 was very surprising. Francis Desrochers ran all over them for 58 rushing yards, including extra 10 yards that were good for 2 points. Him and Vincent Benjamin had no response from Trapstars.
  • Gabriel Boucher (Kiss My Inlaws) has the most points off of converts with 4 (Two 1-point converts and one 2-point convert).
  • Both Ravens and Warriors who were coming off Week 1 losses and who hadn’t played in 20 days, both got back into the win column.
  • No Houle? No Problem. Just sub him for Yvan Desjardins who went off for 109 yards, 2 TD’s and a pick 6 against Threat Level Midnight.
  • 2 receivers in Tier 3 have already hit the 200-yard mark: Vincent Benjamin (Sulé Fess) and Zach Zwirn (Bruins).
  • So apparently Zackary Alberts-Gill and Gab Wiseman are having a friendly battle over the sack title and Zack is winning that so far with 9 sacks on the season to Wiseman‘s 5.
  • Tier 4:
  • WIB 2.0 vs. Primetime was a fun game to watch, but Primetime’s inexperience and love for the deep ball prevented them from making their last-play-of-the-game attempt more manageable. After WIB 2.0 punted, leaving Primetime 2 plays remaining from the 10, yes, you can go deep if there’s a breakdown in coverage or a missed assignment, but don’t just throw it up with 2-3 defenders waiting in the wings. Rather, you should look to split the field in half. Plus, 4 defenders were lined behind mid-field. Take the yards the defense gives you and give yourself a greater shot at getting in the endzone on the last play.
  • Woah, I know that Bruno Provencher of Deep Ballz is good, but he gave The Penetrators a very tough time on Thursday night in Laval. That was a much closer game than anticipated.
  • Also Deep Ballz… wear jersey numbers or else your stats won’t go up… 🤦‍♂️
  • C’mon Step Bros, don’t do Michael Benson dirty like that and give the guy another passing attempt so he can complete a pass and not be stuck on -2 passing yards on the season… or don’t.
  • QB Roulette vs. The Step Bros was… not the prettiest of Quarterback matchups. If anything, it appears as though Zack has found a favorite target in Gerry Gilbert.

  • Nicholas Fon is starting to run away with Receiver of the Year and we’re only 3 weeks in.
  • Primetime have gone with a QB switch. Out comes Skylar Bayliff, in comes Zack Stacey.
  • Zackary Alberts-Gill finds himself in a rusher race in Tier 4 as well, this time with Tony Vo of Save The Turftles. Zack’s got 7 sacks , one behind the leader in Tony.
  • Co-Ed:
  • The list of undefeated teams is down to 3: The Villains, EZFun and Fast Not Furious (2-0-1).
  • EZFun found themselves in a very tight game against Badgers, where 2 late interceptions from Cesar Garcia-Diaz against Nicolas Blais not only got them within 2 points of EZFun, but gave the Badgers a shot at the win.
  • The Villains played a tough game against Free Smoke, but did so with a FFT (Terrebonne league) QB who doesn’t appear to be their Quarterback for the season… soo… if these teams rematch in the playoffs, we’re left not knowing who the true favorite is.
  • Y&Y went 2-0 in Week 3 and Gino Di Fazio did a great job in the game against LPP to get the girls just as involved as the guys. The attack was balanced, with 16 targets split amongst 4 guys and 13 targets between 3 girls. Keiya Allen-Beckles, Rachelle Vallieres and Olivia Stewart combined for 12 receptions, 126 yards and 1 TD.
  • Benchwarmers played a suffocating style game against Badgers. Gab Wiseman ran twice for 50 rushing yards, both rushes going for TD’s (30 and 20-yard TD runs), while he had 3 sacks defensively and Nic Gomes-Risso and Jocelyn Calixte combined for 3 INTs.
  • Melting Potes got their first win of the season against Les Pas-Cares.
  • A couple of girls are standing out as rushers in Co-Ed. Celia Lamarre and of course, Marilou Côté Noël have 4 and 3 sacks respectively and are smothering QB’s!
  • Women’s:
  • And there we have it, the battle of BRUTES vs. Vortex, and it was Vortex that came out on top, 18-12. I would have anticipated a higher scoring game, somewhere in the 38-35 range, but both defenses stood tall against their opposing offenses. What was interesting is that both QBs racked up the passing yards, which means the defenses were giving up the 1st down at mid-field, but were not giving up the TD, tightening up when the offenses crossed the half.
  • Meggie Gervais of BRUTES did her part for BRUTES, with 2 sack on Gabrielle Vanier while Laurence Pontbriand and Rebecca Decarie-Corbeil moved the offense, combing for 141 yards and 1 TD.
  • For Vortex, Catherine Girard, Joanie Provost and Mathilde Renaud were the 3-headed monster at receiver, while Rachel Vanier got the final interception on Maude Lacasse to seal the victory for Vortex.
  • Red Nation got a blowout victory over Loups du Nord that started with back-to-back pick 6’s; one from GG Cabillo-Abante and the 2nd from none other than Rachelle Vallières. What was more important for Red Nation is that Allyson Sobol was able to churn the offense and score 5 TD’s. She needs to have a repeat performance against Louves du Nord and then channel that play and do the same against the Vortex and BRUTES defenses.
  • Both Branda Leonard and Ngoc Quynh Pham need to start hitting the easier check-down receivers and run simpler plays. The 30% and 33% completion is way too low to have an effective offense.
  • Nikki Limniatis of Red Nation rounds out the Top 5 receivers in yards with 164 yards on 15 receptions and 2 TDs. Once she has the ball in her hands, she’s got some good speed and move to avoid defenders and get down field.

Game Recap – Co-Ed Cup

The Villains vs. Free Smoke

The first thing I noticed in this game is that neither “regular, starting” QB was lined up behind center. It was a bit surprising to not see Jeanslee Alexis at QB for Free Smoke, given he had led them to a perfect 3-0 start to the season. As for The Villains, they brought in Marc-Andre Reeves of the Terrebonne flag league to come play for them, which leads me to believe that they think they had a better shot with him at QB to beat Free Smoke than with Jérémi Thompson OReilly. I thought that then, and even more so after seeing that they played a game later that night with Jérémi at Quarterback against Sneaky Snakes. To me, that’s a poor decision unless Reeves will play enough games to be playoff-eligible. You might as well give the reps to your playoff quarterback, especially if this is a team you think you may cross in an elimination game down the road.

After Antonio Gutierrez Orsini halted the first Free Smoke drive with an interception as he crashed from the middle of the field to the sideline, The Villains would drive the field, but ultimately come up short on the second 4th-down attempt, as the Free Smoke aggressive defense showed its teeth. Early on, it was noticeable that on key downs for Free Smoke, 3rd and 4th down, Jourdain Alexis was going to Mohammed Nechchad for the 1st down conversions. He would eventually hit Jeanslee Alexis on a 5-yard touchdown pass to put Free Smoke up 6-0.

The next Villains drive was led by both Jérémi Thompson OReilly and Xavier Sauvé, as they combined for 36 yards on the drive. In the redzone on this drive however, Marie Christine Gauthier was the recipient of the first Villians touchdown of the night and ended up being not only a big redzone target all night, but a reliable target from anywhere on the field, leading the receiving core in all statistical categories with 7 receptions, 10 targets, 69 yards and 3 TDs.

While that Villians drive took 9 plays, Free Smoke would answer immediately, with a 40-bomb TD to the speedy Valéry Shelder that the Villains had to respect the rest of the game. That said, Reeves never seemed panicked or overwhelmed, and once again led his team on another 9-play, clock chewing drive that resulted in a 4-yard TD to Xavier Sauvé. Not only did Xavier Sauvé make an impact on offense, but on the next drive, on a 4th-and-6 situation, with Jourdain Alexis turning up the sideline with a BURST of speed for a run attempt at the first down, Xavier Sauvé came barrling down for a leaping tackle that left Jourdain a full yard short of the first down. It’s not often you see a tackle play that leaves you saying “woah”, but this was definitely one of them, as the crowd watching, myself included, would have all said as the play was unfolding “well this run is going to be a first down for sure”. With only 19 yards for the endzone, the Free Smoke defense did show up and turned it into a 4th-and-goal from the 1 yard line, but Gauthier, the aforementioned redzone target for Reeves was able to get behind the lanes defense and secure the pass over the heads of the short defenders for a key touchdown after the turnover-on-downs.

While Free Smoke did score 2 more TD’s (with a Villains touchdown in between them), they did go for the onside kick with less than 5 plays remaining in the game. I thought they made a mistake as to when to go for the onside kick. They should have gone for it after scoring the 1st of 2 TD’s. By going for it only after the 2nd TD, which they missed, the game ended right then and there.

Players of the game:

The Villains: Marie Christine Gauthier– 7 receptions, 10 targets, 69 yards, 3 TDs

Free Smoke: Mohammed Nechchad – 7 receptions, 8 targets, 59 yards, 1 TD

Game Recap – Tier 2

Team Ethnik vs. Centaures

This battle of Tier 2 teams started with both teams trading scores on the first 4 possessions, with only the Centaures converting on a 2-point attempt to go up 14-12. Extra point decisions were, as I’ll explain, a big influence on this game.

Yvan Desjardins was a beast in the first half, starting with a 26-yard TD, which was a nasty grab over the middle of the field and put on the jets down the sideline into the endzone. But here is where the decision making on both teams started come into question. Now up 20-12, the EASY decision is to go for 1 point to make it a 9-point, 2-possession game. Instead, Jason Rossie and the Centaures offense decided (highly questionable) to go for 2, unsuccessfully.

After that Centaures’ 5-play drive, Benoit Lawlor hit his favorite go-route runner in 1 play, connecting with Will Bissonnette as he flew by Will Power and got behind him to outstretch his arms and hauled in the Lawlor bomb for a TD. Score is 20-18. EASY decision to go for 2, right? Apparently not, as Team Ethnik decided to go for 1 (and then realized they should go for 2, but, and the correct callout was made by ref Jack Nudi, the cones had already been set and if Team Ethnik wanted to go for 2, they would have to call a timeout). They didn’t and didn’t convert for 1 either. Not to be outdone though, Desjardins broke free once again, this time for 35 yards and the score. Okay, Centaures are up 8 again, 26-18. They will surely go for 1 point this time… NO… they once again go for 2 and once again don’t convert. This was maddening on the sideline from both my and field judge ref Craig O’Brien.

The 2nd half then started with the Bissonnette drive. Now that the Centaures had to respect his speed, a 7-10 hook on the sideline was there all drive, as he racked up 4 receptions, 22 yards and the TD on the opening drive of the 2nd half. And then, FINALLY, the teams started making the right decisions on extra points, as Team Ethnik went for 2 points when down 2. But then, ANOTHER (albeit) smaller mental mistake, IMO. On the 2 point conversion that was unsuccessful, Chris Brockwell was called for defensive pass interference, and the options (usually) are: 1) A 1-point convert attempt from the 1, 2) a 2-point convert from the 1, but, and most importantly (and not sure the refs presented this as an option as Team Ethnik were so quick to make their decision), but option 3) is to apply the 10-yard penalty on the onside kick. For me, ANY time you can apply a 10-yard penalty for the onside kick, you do it (in almost any/every game circumstance). Instead, they decided to go for 2 points from the 1 (which is not a wrong decision, it’s just that applying it on the onside kick is the better decision). The 2 point convert ended up not being converted on a back-of-endzone, last second read to Afdaal Martin, but he would come up big on the next drive.

After just crossing midfield, the Ethnik defense started playing more man defense, and on 3rd and 4th down, first David De Andrade and then Afdaal Martin would get their hands on the Jason Rossie passes to prevent the key first down, giving the ball back to their Quarterback. Benoit Lawlor wasted no time, hitting snapper Nic Gomes-Risso down the pipe for a 27-yard score on the very next play to go ahead for the first time in the game, 30-26. Okay, you’re up 4…. you GOTTA go for 2, right? So that if the opposing team scores a TD, at least the game is tied, and then you force the offense to convert their XP attempt for the win. But no, apparently the mental mistakes extra point decisions were strong in this game. Team Ethnik decides to go for 1 and do get it. Great, your up 5…. which is as meaningless as going for 2 points and not converting, but at least you had a chance to go up by 6. Luckily though, Ethnik scored in just 1 play and left themselves enough time on the clock for a chance to get the ball back one more time.

The Centaures came up huge on their final offensive drive of the game. On 4th and 5, Jason Rossie hit brother Jordan Rossie over the middle of the field for his only, yet massive, catch of the game; good for 9 yards and the first down. While the Ethnik defense was stronger in the 2nd half, and brought the drive to another 4th down play, it was here where they were had. This time, 4th and 7, Chris Brockwell, more known for the underneath routes and tackle evasions, was able to get downfield and caught a beauty for the 21-yard TD to put his team up 32-31. But did they score too early? They left about a minute on the clock and gave Lawlor the chance to drive downfield, and that’s exactly what he did. He drove the offense all the way to the 2-yard line with 1 play remaining. Unfortunately for him and Team Ethnik, Will Power iced the game with an interception at the front right corner of the endzone to give Centaures the hard-fought victory.

Players of the game:

Team Ethnik: Benoit Lawlor– 19/29, 65.5% completion, 234 passing yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT, 115.5 QBR
