A 35+ Football Story – Week 9

35+ FPF/KTFL Week 9 Article

Welcome to week 9 where everyone is Irish for a few days and the kickoff to MTL Spring is officially here.

Hard to believe that it’s been 3 years since we first got shut down in March 2020, FPF 35+ played the semi-final playoffs on March 12 2020 and to this day we’ve never played the finals. The government announced on that date everyone had to work from home following Tuesday. We played the playoffs that night and everybody was casually uncomfortable trying to figure out what our new reality was going to be. A cancelled season in 2021, but we returned in 2022 and even 35+ survived a mini Covid outbreak last March at Baie D’Urfe and fortunately no major issues came out of it (and we still don’t know who patient zero was).   Thankfully all sports are back to normal with no restrictions and we can all enjoy playing the games we love and share a pint or 2 with our brotherhood of fools.  Let’s hope that crap was a once in a lifetime occurrence and we never have to wash our groceries again.

There is no doubt the NCAA Basketball tournament is the single greatest sporting event, tons of games, 1 game do or die. Games all day long, what more can you ask for. March Madness is definitely living up to it’s name this year. Pure Madness as a 1 and 2 fall early and ruin everyone’s chances of the elusive perfect bracket.  Purdue was over hyped and FDU is the new kid on the block, but as usually they will probably lose by 40 next round, but they will remember this moment for the rest of their lives. FDU has a weird Canadian connection as they have a Vancouver Campus for some reason. Go Princeton.

So it’s time to smash into this week’s action like the Kool Aid man, does the KTFL division playoffs have a Purdue style upset on deck for us? Only way to find out is keep on reading….

Legends Division

Monster 43  – Rainmakers 19

Rainmakers finally picked up that elusive first win and were hoping to start a mini-streak, but alas Monster reminded them that they are the Monsters to beat this season.  Continuing the weirdest stat line of the season Monster scores 43 points on 11 receptions. 5 TD’s on 11 catches is impressive and they’ve been doing that all season long. The Kastner connection has a solid day as Ryan connects with Brother Derek for 5 catches and 2 TD’s, but not enough as Monster has 4 players with Offensive TD’s and deliver on Converts with 4 of them completed including 3 x 2pt.  Majority of playoff games come down to converts for going 4 for 6 is good mojo.

Key Stats –  Monster Defence with 2 Picks and an impressive 7 passes defended.

Pacemakers 33 – Gladiateurs 32

Barnburner Alert!  Great matchup here, as Gladiateurs are in the Red Zone on the last play for the win, but Pacemakers hold the line and take the W for their first win against Gladiateurs this season. Both QB’s are in the zone as neither has INT’s, score 5 TD’s to 4 different receivers and spread the ball to 6 different receivers. Alex Lever has his usual type of game leading Gladiateurs on offence and defence but it’s Chris Bockwell who’s heating up on the stretch run, going 8 for 9 and picking up a huge 2 point conversion which is the difference in this battle. These teams head to head is 1-1-1 this season so if they end up facing each other at any point during the playoffs, it will be an exciting game. Shoutout to Simon Rheamue who left with a fractured wrist and the end of his season, but not before he puked on the bench. Fortunately he’ll be back for KTFL in the fall.

Key Stats – Alex Lever’s 2 way Day with 4 catches/1 TD and 6 tackles/2 PD and Chris Bockwell with 8 catches, 1 TD and the key 2 pt conversion.

KTFL Draft Division

JMJ 44 – FPF 32

Looking at the standings & stats, this game seemed one sided potentially, but JMJ clearly didn’t care what the reporters say and delivers a knockout punch to the first place FPF squad. Jason Rossie scores at will here with 6 TD’s and no INT’s and just like the Fast and Furious, he keeps it in the family hitting brother Jordan for 3 of those TD’s. Jordan also does it alone with a key Pick 6 for a 4th TD on the day. Jeff Rosenblatt moves the ball well on offence hitting 3 different receivers for 5+ catches but the JMJ defence keeps them out of the end zone enough for the upset win. So JMJ heads to the finals this Wednesday, can they pull out another upset?  Now let’s see who they will meet next.

Key Stats –  Mario Choueri big 2 way day with 6 catches/2 TD’s and 4 tackles and Jordan Rossie also delivers a big 2 way day with 8 catches for 3 TD’s and a pick 6 on defence.

Paramount 46 –  Polvige 44

Converts, gosh darn converts.  Shootout at the Ok Corral (aka Baie D’Urfe) here as both teams explode for 7 TD’s. but those punk ass converts make the difference as Paramount picks up 4 pts on them vs Polvige’s convert total of 2 pts.  Solid defensive days for Paramount’s Cory (6 tackles, 1 INT) and Mallais (5 tackles) and Polvige’s Vince Mancini (6 tackles) and Gary McMahon (4 tackles), but the story of the day was Offence and more Offence from both teams.  Owy and OlsOn have monster days from the pivot position with 130.1 and 125.3 QB ratings. Both rely on their old faithfuls as Bryan Joseph and Scott Binns both notch 3 TD’s. Paramount now heads to the final against JMJ which will be an epic battle I’m sure.

Key Stats –  Paramount’s OlsOn with 21/29, 262 yards, 6 passing TD’s and 1 rushing TD and Owy’s 24/30, 272 yards and 7 TD’s.

35+ FPF – KTFL Finals

So this Wednesday at 9pm, it’s (4) JMJ @ (2) Paramount for the 35+ FPF KTFL championship. Paramount holds the 2-0 edge in their matchups this season, but JMJ clearly doesn’t care about what happened during the regular season, as shown in their upset of #1 FPF.  Chris OlsOn has been on fire this season on both sides of the ball but the Rossie bro’s had a big semi-final performance, so it’s anyone’s game and will be must see TV.  Except that it won’t be on TV so come catch it live and enjoy an adult beverage or 2.  Good luck to both teams!

Legends Division Final Regular Season Games

Monster holds a 1 pt lead over Pacemakers and Gladiateurs with Rainmakers locked in at 4th place. Monster takes the regular championship with a clean win, but nothing is ever that easy as they take on a tough Gladiateurs squad.  Pacemakers take on the Rainmakers looking to exact revenge on their loss in their previous match-up. It’s going to be an interesting week as Monster can take the crown or potentially fall all the way down to 3rd potentially.

So after 9 weeks of somehow trying to write 1,000 words about 4 games, we only have 3 games coming this week so to all those playing make these games interesting! Merci!

And now this article heads down the tunnel to the showers as it reaches the end, Did I trigger Carmine this week with my voice to text article and multiple run on sentences?  Hopefully 😊

See you on the field

Thanks
