Women’s A Awards Race Heats Up

With only three weeks left in the regular season, the race for individual accolades in FlagPlus Football’s top women’s division is heating up. As teams fight for playoff positioning, a handful of standout players have emerged as frontrunners for the league’s most coveted awards.

Quarterback of the Year

The QB of the Year award has evolved into a fascinating duel between efficiency and volume, with Sara Parker (Subzero) and Athena Ryan (IceCold) presenting compelling but contrasting cases.

Parker’s numbers leap off the page: a league-leading 123.3 passer rating (min 5 games) built on remarkable efficiency. In just five games, she’s thrown 23 touchdowns against only 5 interceptions while completing 73.5% of her passes. Her 11.2 yards per completion showcases her ability to strike deep, and she’s done it all while leading Subzero to a perfect 7-0 record.

However, Ryan’s volume statistics demand attention. Through eight games, the IceCold signal-caller has attempted a staggering 247 passes—96 more than Parker—completing 141 for 1,740 yards and 29 touchdowns. Her 12.3 yards per completion actually edges Parker’s impressive mark, though her 17 interceptions and 57.1% completion rate reflect the heavier burden she carries on a 3-5 team.

Dark Horse Candidates:

  • Sandrine Gobeil-Huot (Cayenne): Perfect efficiency with an incredible 88.2% completion rate and 144.1 passer rating, but limited to three games
  • Andréanne Cadorette (Monarchs): solid production with 20 TDs and a 99.9 rating

The Verdict: Parker’s combination of elite efficiency and team success gives her the edge, but Ryan’s final three games could swing the race if she can limit turnovers.

Receiver of the Year

Ashley Longin (IceCold) has been nothing short of spectacular, turning 31 receptions into 480 yards and 8 touchdowns. Her 15.5 yards per catch leads all qualified receivers, demonstrating game-breaking ability every time she touches the ball.

Mathilde Sybille (Subzero) presents an intriguing alternative. In just five games, she’s hauled in 26 catches for 343 yards and 7 touchdowns. Her 13.2 yards per reception and chemistry with Parker in the undefeated Subzero offense make her a serious contender.

Dark Horse Candidate:

  • Sara Maude Harvey (Monarchs): An eye-popping 16.7 yards per catch, though with fewer targets (31) and 6 touchdowns

The Verdict: Longin’s ability to produce elite numbers on a sub-.500 team edges out Sybille’s excellent but lower-volume production.

Defensive Player of the Year

Elodie Lachapelle (IceCold) has been the league’s most impactful defender, leading all players with 6 interceptions. Her ability to read quarterbacks and jump routes has resulted in 2 defensive touchdowns, absolutely changing games with her playmaking. Add in 30 tackles and 5 pass deflections, and you have a dominant defensive season.

Audrey Lajoie (BLEU POUD) presents an intriguing case with her 5 interceptions for a team struggling more than most would have thought, showcasing elite ball skills despite playing from behind for a good amount of the season so far. Her 20 tackles and 3 pass deflections demonstrate solid all-around play.

The Rushers: While no player has dominated the sack category, a few have made their mark:

  • Sarah-Maude Mathieu (Les Crocs): 4 sacks
  • Lea Bigras (IceCold): 4 sacks combined with 3 pass deflections
  • Multiple players tied with 2 sacks, showing the difficulty of consistent quarterback pressure in 5v5 play

Dark Horse Candidate:

  • Sara-eve Asselin (IceCold): While her 39 tackles lead the division, her impact plays (2 INTs, 5 PDs, 1 defensive TD) combined with tackle dominance make her a factor if she can finish strong.

The Verdict: Lachapelle’s league-leading interceptions and defensive scoring make her the clear frontrunner. In flag football, taking the ball away and creating scoring opportunities defines defensive excellence.

Two-Way Player of the Year

Unlike the other award categories where clear frontrunners have emerged, the Two-Way Player of the Year remains completely up for grabs. With three weeks left, no single player has separated themselves from a crowded field of versatile athletes. Mathilde Sybille of Subzero has flashed game-breaking ability on both sides of the ball, scoring touchdowns as both a receiver and defender while maintaining consistency for the undefeated squad. Stephanie Garey might be playing for the last-place Les Crocs, but her two-way impact has been undeniable as one of the few players making significant contributions in both the passing game and creating turnovers on defense. Other names to watch include Julianne Fortin of Cayenne, who’s quietly putting together a solid two-way campaign, and her teammate Alexane Fournier, whose defensive playmaking combined with offensive contributions has been valuable. Emma Townsend-Asselin represents another Les Crocs player showing versatility despite team struggles. The final three weeks will be crucial for this award, someone needs to step up and claim this hardware.

The Verdict: Too close to call. Watch for someone to make a statement in the season’s final stretch.
