35+ | Week 6 Recap

Here we go with another week in the world of old-man-flag-football.

Draft Division

Polvige 33 – Relics 27

Relics continue to just miss finding their elusive second win, their last 2 losses have been by 4 and 6 points so they are in the mix, but need to find a way to grab W’s before the end of the season.  They had a chance on the last play to tie the game with a possible convert to get the win, but just missed.  Close doesn’t count in Flag football so they need to find the missing element quickly as with 2 games left they need to win both to avoid finishing in last. QB Shawn Payne was game MVP had a strong game going 13 for 19 with 4 TD’s. Joel Shahrabari continues a strong season and moves into a tie for division lead in tackles with 21.

Polvige does grab their 2nd win (finally), Offence did their usual thing scoring 5 TD’s, Defense was ok but still needs a bigger effort to ensure they don’t have to win in Shootouts.  Offensively it was Vince Mancini and Brian Martin as per normal but Steve Clark continues a surprisingly year as he’s become a major part of their offence. Solid defensive game by Jesse Roberts with 3 flags and an INT.

Dagwoods 36 – Aptech 13

A close first half unfortunately didn’t carryover into the 2nd half, as 1st place Dagwoods ran away with this one.  Aptech came out strong early but couldn’t finish drives turning the ball over with interceptions and 4th down turnovers. Too much talent on offence here to only score 13 points.

Defensively, they broke the cardinal rule and let Rob Allen get behind their defence where he had a huge game with 5 TD’s.  Aptech is a contender but we’ll chalk this one up to a bad 2nd half and hope they come out firing next game. Brian Zenobi’s team is now tied with Polvige with 5 points making their next matchup a big one as they tied last time.

Dagwoods clearly had a big game, aside from Rob’s 5 TD’s, QB Lonnie had zero picks to go with his 6 TD’s. They read Aptech’s D perfectly and took advantage of it all game. On Defence which was probably more impressive than the offence, they were all over the stats sheet, everyone had tackles, key timely picks by Joel Waton and Lonnie and Enzo Bellini with 2 big drive killing sacks.

Teams Division

The Leons 45 – Old Goats 19

Sometimes when a team doesn’t have their starting QB, that can be a good thing.  Unfortunately for Old Goats, The Leons have HOF QB Kevin Wyeth on their roster who had a big game going 12 for 15 with 5 TD’s. More impressively, 7 players had catches and 4 had TD’s, when an offensive attack is that balanced, it’s hard to stop.

Old Goats receiver Bruno Lajoie picks up another 5 receptions to stay near the top of the league leaders in receptions but it wasn’t enough as the Old Goats continue to get stuck at 3 TD’s per game. Old Goats have a tough road ahead but in order to start winning, defence needs to step up and QB Jason Rossie’s offence needs to find a game breaker, Rossie is 2nd in the division in completions so with some deeper completions they should be able to score an upset soon.

35ers 39 – Oldpack 33

After losing their first match-up by 20 points, Oldpack came out swinging and almost was able to take down the first place 35ers.  The interesting stat for this game is even with 72 Points scored combined, the defences were the real story as a combined 9 INT’s were recorded.

Jimmy Coupethwaite was a monster target for now starting QB Camine Pollice (Rick is out with injury for the season), picking up 10 receptions. Andrew Carruthers was the End Zone favorite picking up 3 TD’s. Carmine 4 INT’s aren’t the norm for him but fortunately his defence helped him out picking up 5 INT’s which was the difference in the game. Rob White was a huge factor on D with 2 PD’s and 2 INT’s of which 1 was a pick 6.

QB Pascal Murray, while scoring 5 TD’s on 35ers is impressive, knows he must limit the turnovers as that was the deciding factor in this loss.  Oldpack defence had a monster game, with Hugo Dupuy and Jean-Michel Alerte combining for 13 tackles and 2 INT’s.

This game was interesting and sets the tone for the back half of the season, as like most teams in 35+, all the offences can score and it’s going to be the defences that make the difference, here we had both Defences having big games while the offences had issues with Turnovers.

With the experience all these teams have, mistakes are going to be killer, I would guess the majority of the players in 35+ have at least 20 years football experience each, so they know when it’s their turn to step up offensively or defensively and make a game changing play.  Whichever teams limit the big plays against them, will be the ones booking a trip to the finals.

That’s it for week 6, week 7 is a short week with only 2 games in the Teams Division, interesting match up with 35ers and Monster renewing their lifelong rivalry, should be a good one!

See you on the field.
