2nd-and-Short (Div D) – Week 2

Week 2 is officially in the books. I’d say more, but I have a Habs game to watch, so let’s get started.

Recap

Show Me Your TDs Show Warriors Their TDs

Eight, to be exact, in a 54-6 romp that was over by halftime.

After seeing Cedric Sambour throw five touchdowns in a Week 1 loss to Les Rois Lions last week, Warriors curiously decided to move Sambour to receiver and insert Mike Bagnato at quarterback.

Considering Bagnato threw just one touchdown to five picks on Sunday, it’s clear that’s a decision Warrios wish they could take back.

On the other side of the ball, QB Mike Addona didn’t exactly do anything special, throwing few deep balls and ending up with under 150 passing yards. But throwing 40 yard bombs isn’t his game, anyway. Addona is at his best when he sticks to his short passing gameplan and takes few risks, and that’s exactly what he did over the weekend and it paid off handsomely.

The BrotherHood turn Lachine Into Their Hood Jamal Gittens’ Hood

I hate to show off (of course that’s a lie), but Pardon My Swag’s game vs. The BrotherHood went down pretty much as I thought it would.

On one side of the ball, PMS QB Gianfranco Ranaudo had a difficult time finding room to throw against one of the most athletic defences in the division, completing less than half of his passes and tossing an interception each to Omar Jackson and Jamal Gittens.

On the other side, PMS simply had no answer for Gittens when he took the field as quarterback. Be it deep throws, short passes, running the ball—you name it, Gittens was doing it as he led his team to a 19-13 halftime lead.

Though PMS were able to slow Gittens down ever so slightly in the second half, holding strong for numerous 4th down turnovers, they weren’t able to do much with them as they fell 25-13.

Demons Don’t Have Balls, Ball Busters Bust Them Anyway

Finally, a game I preview that lives up to the hype.

Ball Busters vs. Speed Demons was every bit as tough as I thought it to be, with both defences giving very little room for the opposing quarterback to operate.

After putting on a six-touchdown show in Week 1, Ball Busters QB Hai Minh Luong hit somewhat of a wall against the elite defence of Speed Demons, who didn’t give him anything deep all game long. The same could be said for Speed Demons QB Sam Holden, who despite tossing three touchdowns in this game, saw few of his 12 completions go for bombs.

It saw a 7-7 game at halftime become 21-20 when Luong tossed his third touchdown of the game with just a handful of plays remaining. Speed Demons were able to get down into Ball Busters’ side of the field thanks to some clutch catches and smart running by Holden.

But facing fourth down and goal, hopes of a Demons comeback ended when Holden was sacked by Dylan Taylor to clinch the Ball Busters’ second win of the season.

Power Rankings

1. Les Rois Lions: Yeah, it’s still only Week 2, but really, is there any doubt Nicolas Gendron-Vallée won’t win receiver of the season?

2. Les Affreux: I hate how good of a QB Mat Domon is.

3. Backyard Bullies: Their win over Angry Birds was probably one of the most complete games I’ve ever seen in FPF in recent memory.

4. Ball Busters: Going from nearly 300 passing yards and 6 touchdowns to under 100 and 3 isn’t exactly the definition of consistent, but this is a team that is finding multiple ways to win, and that’s pretty damn important.

5. Fun Boys: Terrance Morsink is a beast. That is all.

6. The BrotherHood: Two games, two dazzling performances by QB Jamal Gittens. If the saying holds true that a team can only go as far as its QB carries them, this is one team sure to go far this season.

7. Primetime: With a QB that’s thrown 8 TDs and just one pick through two games, and a defence that has allowed a division-lost 24 points thus far, it’s safe to say this team is rolling.

8. Monstars: I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to see Monstars at 2-0 without Hermes Zepeda on the roster. I’m pleasantly surprised.

9. Lobster Dinner: Winning games when you’re not playing up to your potential is a good problem to have.

10. Show Me Your TDs: You won and you won big. I like that. Now show me you can do it again.

Quick Picks

Another 9-5 week puts me at a solid 18-10 on the season. But it’s not solid enough as Mat Domon’s 10-4 week puts him ever so slightly ahead at 19-9. I hope he enjoys his lead while it lasts.
